Northern Westchester Hospital’s Yorktown Imaging Facility is designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by ACR

Northern Westchester Hospital’s Yorktown Imaging Facility, located at 1940 Commerce Street, has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) Commission on Quality and Safety, and the Commission on Breast Imaging. The designation is also held by the Women’s Imaging Center on NWH’s main campus in Mt. Kisco.

Breast Surgeon Zoe Weinstein, MD, joins WMCHealth Network Staff

Zoe Weinstein, MD, a board-certified breast surgeon practicing in the mid-Hudson Valley for more than a decade, has joined the medical staff of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), with privileges at member hospitals HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus in Kingston and MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

Prior to joining WMCHealth, Dr. Weinstein was in private practice for nearly 20 years and has served as Medical Director of the Fern Feldman Anolick Center for Breast Health at HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus since 2009, a role she will continue to fill.

Dr. Weinstein is a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She is accomplished in advanced breast surgery procedures and techniques, including minimally invasive stereotactic breast biopsy; ultrasound-guided, vacuum-assisted breast biopsy; radionuclide injection for sentinel lymph node identification, and the insertion of balloon catheters for partial breast irradiation.

Dr. Weinstein earned her undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, and her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. She completed an internship in anatomic pathology and a five-year residency in general surgery at Montefiore Medical Center.

The Fern Feldman Anolick Center is dedicated to providing outstanding, compassionate care in a warm and caring environment. The center combines a coordinated team approach tailored to each patient’s individual needs with the most advanced breast imaging modalities and

Got Hefty Medical Bills? Try Negotiating to Get Them Reduced You may be able to lower the amount you owe significantly Many consumers facing a big medical bill don’t consider one possible remedy: negotiating a lower price. Insurance companies pay nowhere near posted rates, so why should you?

Many Americans already struggle to pay their medical expenses. A full 20 percent of working-age adults with health insurance report having problems, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation/New York Times survey. Among the uninsured, more than half do.

So if you're already having difficulty, it can be especially daunting if you're on the hook for a huge medical bill because of a high deductible, an out-of-network charge, a procedure that isn’t covered, or being uninsured.

If you know your insurance won't cover a procedure, it's best to negotiate the price beforehand. "You can discuss it before you go in,” says Adria Gross, a medical billing advocate and CEO of MedWise Insurance Advocacy. “What the fee is going to be and if you can bring it down.”

If your doctor can't reduce the price, you might want to reconsider the procedure or have the doctor suggest alternatives that are cheaper or that are covered by insurance.

But if it's a medical necessity, or an emergency, you may end up having to negotiate after the bill arrives. It may feel odd to bargain with a hospital or doctor, but doing so could reduce what you owe by up to 50 percent.

“The first step that most people don’t take is to ask,” says John Jackson, executive director of CareCounsel, an outfit that provides health advocacy services through employersponsored health plans.

How do you go about doing that?

The billing office is a good place to start, but don’t expect the person who picks up the phone to cut a deal. “The first response will be no, I can’t do anything,” says Abbie Leibowitz, chief medical officer of Health Advocate, an advocacy and health assistance company. “You have to be persistent. Figure out who in the organization has the authority.”

Keep asking for the manager of the person you’re talking to—even if that takes you all the way up to the chief financial officer, Gross says. Then use these tips to help you:

Frame your request around your ability to pay. This may work if you’re in a health plan that comes with a high deductible, as a growing number are, or if you’re uninsured. “If you owe $10,000 and you’re telling me that it’s going to be impossible for you to pay, then I’m more likely to negotiate—to make sure I get paid at all,” Jackson says.

Just be prepared to provide documentation showing that you really don’t have the money.

Talk about wanting to pay a fair price. Medical pricing is a system built on discounts: No insurance company would ever pay sticker price, yet that’s what’s on the bill you receive. Pricing transparency websites such as Healthcare Bluebook can give you an idea of what health plans actually pay medical providers, often a fraction of the amount charged. “You should not feel guilty about asking for a fair and reasonable price,” says Pat Palmer, president and founder of Medical Billing Advocates of America. “When there is a 50 percent or 100 percent markup, that’s not fair and reasonable.”

Research the prices insurers pay. One strong case for getting a discount after the fact is if you are billed for the services of an out-of-network provider you didn’t agree to see, like when an in-network hospital uses an out-of-network anesthesiologist in the operating room. In fact, many states are working to pass laws to reduce patients’ liability in such situations. The best negotiating tactic there is to ask to be charged what your insurance company would have paid for an in-network provider.

Offer to pay the balance in full. More generally, a good move (if you can afford it) is to offer to immediately pay off the balance of the bill. Medical providers get stiffed for about 20 percent of what they bill individuals, says Leibowitz, so there’s an incentive for them to take less money if getting paid is a sure thing. Medical advocates find that they can often get a 15 percent to 20 percent “prompt pay” discount.

Turn to a medical billing advocate. Last, if you can’t get far on your own, a medical billing advocate can help. Employers sometimes offer access to advocates as a benefit, so check on that first. Hiring an advocate on your own can be expensive—some take a flat fee and others charge a percentage of the money they save you (25 percent is typical).

Just make sure to thoroughly investigate the qualifications of an advocate ahead of time. With so many Americans struggling to pay their medical bills, there are a lot of people out there who are quick to say they can help.

They help you chew, speak and smile, but how much do you really know about your teeth?

Here are some of the “tooth truths” that prove your teeth really are remarkable.

1. People have been caring for their teeth for centuries.

Did you know the first toothbrushes were actually twigs our ancestors chewed on, using the frayed ends to cleanse their teeth? Around 5,000 B.C., the Egyptians used crushed eggshells and ground animal hooves to clean and polish their teeth. By the 1700s, a British inventor had adapted a design first seen in China – a bone handle with boar bristles inserted into small holes and secured with wire. Modern toothbrushes with nylon bristles arrived in the late 1930s, and the first electric toothbrush was introduced in 1954.

2. Teeth can tell stories about you.

Each tooth in your mouth has its own unique profile, and teeth also vary widely from person to person. So your smile really is a true mark of your individuality!

4. The blueprint for your teeth is present the day you’re born.

When babies arrive, the crowns of their first 20 teeth are already in place under the gums, waiting for the right time to break through – starting sometime between 3 to 6 months of age. Throughout childhood, the crowns and roots of adult teeth are already forming under those baby teeth, waiting until it’s time to begin pushing them out of the way. And here’s one more fun fact: In 1950, the average gift from the Tooth Fairy was just 25 cents. Today’s kids get about $2.00 per tooth.

5. Cleaning between your teeth is just as important as brushing the parts you see.

When we brush, we’re able to easily reach the tops and sides of our teeth.

But the surfaces between – which make up a significant part of our tooth enamel – need proper cleaning, too. This is why it’s best to clean between your teeth daily to remove food and bacteria and promote healthy gums.

Dress Down Day for Leukemia: Students and/or faculty and staff donate $2-$5 to dress down for the day. Participating schools are announced on 100.7 WHUD in March.

WHO: All of our programs are designed for students, parents and teachers, and can be extended to include the broader community.

WHY: The programs help students learn the value of achieving goals that benefit others and let them experience empathy and compassion. Incentives and prizes are awarded to school coordinators, teachers and students. Collect for Cures: A program for high school students to demonstrate leadership, creativity and teamwork to make an impact and raise money for blood cancer research.

Bring the Change: Students and faculty will collect money to support LLS’s mission: to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer. As they collect coins they are also invited to participate in fun daily themed days.

Light The Night

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk funds treatments that are saving the lives of patients today.

LLS is making cures happen by providing patient support services, advocating for lifesaving treatments and pioneering the most promising cancer research anywhere. And it's all happening now. Not someday, but today. Each year friends, families and coworkers form teams to raise money in support of our mission.

America's opioid epidemic is being felt nationwide.

How bad is the problem? Here are some statistics via The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which released guidelines in March 2016 encouraging health care providers to pursue safer alternatives like physical therapy for most pain management:

1. In 2012, health care providers wrote 259 million prescriptions for opioid pain medication, enough for every American adult to have their own bottle of pills.

. Heroin-related overdose deaths more than quadrupled between 2002 and 2014, and people addicted to prescription opioids are 40 times more likely to be addicted to heroin.

6. Opioids killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record. Nearly half of those deaths involved prescription opioids.

7. Every day, more than 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments for misusing prescription opioids.

THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC: WHAT PTs AND PTAs NEED TO KNOW America is in the midst of an opioid epidemic. Opioid prescriptions have quadrupled since 1999. In 2012, health care providers wrote 259 million opioid prescriptions, enough for every adult in the United States to have a bottle of pills. As the volume of opioids has increased, so has the amount of misuse, abuse, and overdose. Meanwhile, heroin abuse and overdose have increased at similar rates.

Physical therapy is a safe and effective alternative to opioids for long-term pain management and prevention. Physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) have a responsibility to understand the full scope of the epidemic and its potential impact on their patients and clients.

4 Things You Must Know: 1. The CDC recommends nonopioid approaches for chronic pain.

In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidelines urging clinicians to consider opioid therapy “only if expected benefits for both pain and function are anticipated to outweigh the risks to the patient.” Before prescribing opioids, providers are encouraged to check that nonopioid therapies have been tried and optimized. In cases when opioids are prescribed, providers are encouraged to “start low and go slow” with dosing and to combine with nondrug approaches like physical therapy. Cancer treatment, palliative care, end-of-life care, and certain acute care situations are cited as cases in which properly dosed opioid therapy may be appropriate.

2. The opioid epidemic doesn’t discriminate.

Opioid and heroin use have increased significantly across most demographic groups. “As many as 1 in 4 people who receive prescription opioids long-term for noncancer pain in primary care settings struggles with addiction,” the CDC cites. Every day, more than 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments for misusing prescription opioids. Since 1999, more than 165,000 people in the United States have died from opioid pain-medication-related overdoses.

3. APTA’s #ChoosePT campaign provides resources for patients and clients.

APTA has launched a national public awareness campaign about the growing toll of the opioid epidemic and the safety and effectiveness of physical therapy for pain management. Resources include a downloadable pain assessment that patients can use to facilitate treatment conversations with their health care providers. Superior Returns and No Market Risk with a Fixed Indexed Annuity

People are always looking for the perfect investment. Clients want to earn the highest interest possible without putting any of their money at risk. These sorts of investments have never existed … until now. A Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA) is a guaranteed insurance product that offers above average returns with no market risk to principal and no management fees ever1.

In this historically low interest rate environment, many clients are reconsidering where to park their hard earned cash for the long haul. Certificates of deposit, savings accounts and money markets are literally paying next to nothing and the stock market is at the highest levels in recorded history. So where can clients position their money and earn superior returns without worrying about losing a penny? FIAs offer real double digit returns in up markets without any risk to principal in down markets. Folks everywhere are not only taking notice, but investors are flocking to FIAs.

So how does a FIA actually work? The annuitant buys a traditional guaranteed fixed annuity that also allows him or her to participate in an external index via the carrier’s trading desk. The carrier purchases options against the index either monthly or annually. When the index is up, the options are exercised and the annuitant earns interest, usually subject to a cap. When the index is down during the same time period, the options are allowed to expire and the annuitant is credited the contract’s minimum guarantee of 1%.

So let’s review, when the market index goes up, the annuitant has the ability to earn superior interest and when the market index goes down, the annuitant earns 1%. Further, since the carrier is only tracking the index on a 12 month basis, annuitants do not need to worry about current market levels. Policies are only capturing gains in the next 12 month period.
