County Executive Robert P. Astorino kicked-off Westchester’s Third Annual New York Fathering Conference with a message for dads: Juggling all of the responsibilities of work, life and parenting is difficult, but children need proper role models to succeed. It’s vital for our children, families and communities, he said.

“By being here today – by getting up early and devoting our day to this conference – we’re sending a powerful message. We’re saying that fathers are important,” Astorino told the crowd of several hundred people in attendance at the Westchester County Center. “Fathers play a critical role not only for our children and families, but for society at large. And we’re saying that we’re ready to learn, become better dads, and be the positive role models our children need. That is an important message.”

This year’s theme was “Ready to Work: Navigating Home, Job and Community,” and included an array of inspiring speakers, experts and fathers who have turned their lives around. The day-long program included 21 workshops on topics such as job retraining, hiring trends, navigating government programs, men’s health and wellness, parenting skills, and ways to better engage fathers, many of whom face issues like poverty, imprisonment, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of an education, teenage pregnancy or a host of other challenges that often lead to children being raised by a single mother with no father present.

The keynote speaker was Mike Brady, president and chief executive officer of Greyston, a leading social enterprise organization known for its world-renowned Greyston Bakery that provides employment opportunities for everybody, regardless of one’s background or work history, so that they can help people get back to work, overcome obstacles and lift people out of poverty.

Brady recently took responsibility for all Greyston’s programs and businesses, including Workforce Development, Community Gardens, Housing, Health Services and Early Learning Center.

“We’re all on a path,” Brady told the crowd. “We may be on different paths, but we should all be helping each other to be successful on that path.”The event was organized by the New York Fathering Conference Planning Committee, which is a collaboration of government and nonprofit leaders. The conference is part of Astorino’s ongoing #DadBeThere fatherhood initiative. The goal is to target the full spectrum of fathers, from those who are present in the home to those who are not.

One of the highlights of Astorino’s fatherhood initiative is the R.E.A.L. Parenting Program, which is helping participants to find and keep employment, manage their child support payments, improve their parenting and relationship skills and most importantly, to be the positive role models their children and families need. Spearheaded by the Department of Social Services

and developed with the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and others, the centerpiece of the R.E.A.L. Parenting Program is that the county will cut the debt dads owe to DSS as they successfully complete specific milestones.

In Westchester County, approximately 50,000 children live with a single mother and have no father present. Roughly one-third, or 16,000 children, live below the poverty line. This county program is aimed at reversing the tide, and setting up the circumstances where men can work together, succeed and be there for their children and families.

Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. But the American Heart Association (AHA) is seeking to change that with prevention and awareness through their Go Red For Women Luncheon, set for Friday, June 2nd from 10AM to 2PM, at the Hilton Westchester in Rye. The Go Red For Women Luncheon begins with a morning health and wellness exhibition featuring local health professionals. Also on tap is networking, inspiring survivor stories, and a keynote address by Mara Schiavocampo, an ABC News correspondent and author based in New York.

She reports for many ABC News programs and platforms.

Schiavocampo is a two-time Emmy Award-winning journalist, covering major news stories, including the Boston Marathon bombing, Hurricane Sandy, the Occupy Wall Street protests, the Gulf oil spill, the Haitian earthquake, and the 2008 Presidential election. In her best-selling book, “THINspired” she shares personal journey of losing 90 pounds after the birth of her daughter.

The goal of the Go Red For Women Luncheon is to educate women about the facts of heart disease, and the healthy benefits of prevention, lifestyle changes, and advocating for oneself. Far too many women still don’t know that heart disease is their number one health threat, and they’re not acting aggressively enough to prevent it, nor getting help fast enough when symptoms arise.

An estimated 44 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases, and 90% of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke. The good news is 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. Small, incremental changes to lifestyle can go a long way in preventing these leading killers. Tthe BRIDGE School, a division of Cerebral Palsy of Westchester recently hosted its end of the year Prom in honor of five graduating students.

Three of the school classrooms gathered together for the event which included family, friends and staff. The gym was beautifully decorated with the theme “Hollywood” by LifeTime Events by Jacquelyn and Nova Original Events. The students enjoyed a red carpet entrance while stopping to strike a pose for the photographer. A special entrance was made by the graduating students as Prom Kings & Queens wearing crowns and sashes. Musical performances were given by CPW’s Vocal Groove, a duo by one of our

students along with one of our staff, and our guest guitarist Matty D. Everyone was dressed up and enjoyed lunch, dessert, and dancing to music.

The students had fun taking pictures in the photo booth and eating cotton candy. The Division Director of Children’s Services, Michael Musante stated “The Prom was a second to none event for our kids, and it’s exactly what they deserved. Many thanks to all the staff for making the day a memorable one.”

Medical Insurance Advocate Adria Goldman Gross Looks at America’s “Modern Medical Money Maelstrom” in Eye-Opening Greenburgh Report Interview

(PRWEB) In a recent interview on The Greenburgh Report radio show hosted by Greenburgh, NY Town Supervisor Paul Feiner and broadcast on New Rochelle, NY-based WVOX (1460 AM), leading medical insurance advocate Adria Goldman Gross discussed several eye-opening issues that have combined to create what she calls the country’s “modern medical money maelstrom.”

During the interview with Mr. Feiner, Ms. Gross, the CEO and founder of MedWise Insurance Advocacy and author of the acclaimed book “Solved!

Curing Your Medical Insurance Problems,” highlighted that:

• An increasing number of people are going bankrupt due to excessive medical billing.

• In many cases, people are being vastly overcharged -- yet have no idea.

• Contrary to popular belief, only about half of doctors working in specialized hospitals accept any type of health insurance.

• People whose coverage is provided by a self-insured corporation, and who seek non-emergency health care from an out-of-network provider, can wind up with bills that are dramatically higher than they expected.

• People with insurance need to proactively find out what their insurance company is going to pay – because while many companies use Medicare rates as their baseline, some use lower Medicaid rates.

• Hospitals are notorious for over-testing, which translates into bills that are far higher than necessary.

• People should compare the procedure code for each item that appears on their bill with the Medicare Fee Schedule, in order to discover the customary charge. Armed with this data, they can make an offer to their provider that will be accepted in the majority of cases.

• When it’s safe to do so, people should choose urgent care rather than going to the hospital, where the bills are going to be tremendously higher.

• When going to the hospital is unavoidable, people should try to take a relative or friend with them, and ask them to take meticulous notes of the doctors involved and what they do.

• Many hospitals aren’t telling people if they’re admitted as an inpatient or outpatient under observation. If it’s the latter, they aren’t covered for Medicare Part A, which includes hospitalization and medication.

A record-setting turnout as BCW celebrates 15th year of honoring entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community

Nearly 700 people were on hand as the BCW celebrated its 15th year of the Business Hall of Fame by honoring six companies for their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to community. The recordsetting event was held April 25 at the Harbor Club at Glen Island in New Rochelle.

Videos presented told the story of companies that started from inspiration and grew through teamwork and family pride.

Valerie Wilson of Valerie Wilson Travel, Inc. and winner of the Women in Business Award, described how her company, now one of the top privately owned travel consulting firms, started with a simple idea to serve the affluent business traveler. Wilson thanked her daughters for believing in her and helping her to realize her dream.

John DeCicco Jr., who accepted the Chairman’s Recognition Award, said family pride had helped Frank DiCicco, Sr. open the first supermarket in Pelham 40 years ago and it had also helped the sons build the business over the years, eliciting applauds when he introduced his grandfather who traveled from Italy for the ceremony.

Jason Schiciano of Levitt-Fuirst Associates, Ltd., winners of the Family Owned Business Award said that it was rare to find a third-generation business such as theirs in this day and age. The firm started in 1969, when David Levitt and Ken Fuirst combined their two family-run insurance businesses and opened their first office in Mount Vernon. Today they are one of New York’s most respected middle market independent insurance agencies serving large worldwide manufacturers, as well as local businesses.

Why Whole Life insurance is still the best choice.

By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC The answer is quite simple. Whole Life insurance is the only permanent life insurance product on the market with a guaranteed premium, guaranteed death benefit and guaranteed cash value to age 120. Let me say that again in case you missed it the first time. It is the only permanent life insurance product on the market with a guaranteed premium, guaranteed death benefit and guaranteed cash value to age 120.

How can that be…?

First, term life insurance by design is not a permanent contract. It clearly has a beginning and an end. In fact, did you know that only 1.8% of all term life insurance death benefits are paid to their beneficiaries?1 Do you know why…?

Most insureds are unable to maintain term life coverage because of the following:

➢ Originally inexpensive term life annual renewable premiums become exponentially expensive at advanced ages so insureds are forced to drop the coverage.

➢ When the existing term life insurance contract expires and the individual has become uninsurable due to a serious chronic illness, the insured can no longer buy new coverage.

➢ In NYS, term life policies non-renew at age 80 so the insured can no longer secure coverage.

Second, for the last ten years, Universal Life (UL) insurance policies have gone under changes that are making them less attractive in my humble opinion. Many carriers are no longer offering the “No Lapse” or “Secondary Guarantee” Rider.

What does “Secondary Guarantee” mean…?

Universal Life insurance has historically been a non-guaranteed product. It was originally designed as a more competitive version of permanent Whole Life insurance. The cash value of the universal life contract is solely based upon current interest rates and there is no annual dividend. Often, due to poor design and underfunding, these policies can run out of money in later years and lapse when you need them the most. To circumvent this scenario, the carriers added what is known as a “No Lapse” or “Secondary Guarantee” Rider (ULSG) at a premium. This rider effectively guarantees the death benefit of the insured to age 120 even if there is zero cash value in the policy, provided the insured makes all the scheduled premium payments and does not borrow against the contract.

So what has changed…?

In July of 2005, the National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s (NAIC) Actuarial Guideline 38 (AG 38, also known as Regulation XXX), became effective. It requires all insurers to hold greater reserves on both new and some existing no-lapse UL policies.

The increased financial obligation as well as the ongoing negative effects of this historically low interest rate environment, is hampering the life insurance companies who depend upon earning an interest rate spread and substantial long-term growth on their reserves. Many actuaries simply no longer feel confident that they can cover these liabilities with the existing lower profit margins.

The majority of carriers that have decided to continue to offer these products do so at a much higher premium. So when you compare these new higher UL premiums and their corresponding policy benefits with a similar Whole Life policy, the answer is clear that Whole Life remains the superior product.

In summary, if you are contemplating purchasing permanent life insurance for yourself or for your children, and are undecided between unparalleled guarantees versus lower premiums, the answer is really not that difficult. The old adage still holds true… ‘you get what you pay for’.
