Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further.

After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

In its early stages, breast cancer usually has no symptoms. As a tumor develops, you may note the following signs:

Warning Signs of Breast Cancer

• A lump in the breast or underarm that persists after your menstrual cycle. This is often the first appar• ent symptom of breast cancer.

Lumps associated with breast cancer are usually painless, some may cause a prickly sensation.

Lumps are usually visible on a mammogram long before they can be seen or felt.

• Swelling in the armpit.

• Pain or tenderness in the breast.

Although lumps are usually pain• less, pain or tenderness can be a sign of breast cancer.

• A noticeable flattening or indentation on the breast, which may • indicate a tumor that cannot be seen or felt.

• Any change in the size, contour, • texture, or temperature of the breast. A reddish, pitted surface like the skin of an orange could be a sign of advanced breast cancer.

• A change in the nipple, such as • a nipple retraction, dimpling, itching, a burning sensation, or ulceration. A scaly rash of the nipple is symptomatic of Paget’s disease, which may be associated with an underlying breast cancer.

• Unusual discharge from the nipple • that may be clear, bloody, or another color. It's usually caused by benign conditions but could be due to cancer in some cases.

• A marble-like area under the skin.

• • An area that is distinctly different • from any other area on either breast.

Many of the symptoms of breast cancer can also be symptoms of something else.

Only your doctor can tell for sure. If you have any of these, make an appointment with your doctor. Your doctor will do tests to find out the cause. He or she can give you

the “all clear” or help you start treatment if the tests show you have cancer. Most breast lumps are not cancer. But if your doctor believes it is, it’s best to start treatment right away.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As you might know, the color pink has become synonymous with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With that in mind, Healthcare News has a request for our readers: If you don’t own an item of pink clothing, go out and purchase something pink.

According to Cancer.org, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Here in Westchester County, our families, our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters have been affected by the disease.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a special time for to promote breast cancer awareness and provide information on the disease. Established in 1985, this awareness month, now an international health observance, has from the start aimed to promote a mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

Most of us have been touched by breast cancer in some way.

So it’s time for you to be pretty, or handsome, in pink. Even better, you don’t have to wear your pink garb only in October. Sport it all year to support the wonderful cause.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.

Why breast cancer survivors should exercise

Moderate physical activity can ease stress that impairs memory, study suggests

Excessive stress can lead to memory problems among breast cancer survivors, but exercise can help, according to new research.

“We found moderate to vigorous physical activity actually benefits women psychologically and that, in turn, helps their memory,” said the study's lead author, Siobhan Phillips. She is assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

Post-cancer memory issues are often attributed to chemotherapy or radiation treatments, known as “chemo brain.”

However, the new study findings suggest “these self-reported memory problems may be in part emotionally related,” Phillips said in a university news release.

“These women are frightened, stressed, fatigued, tapped out emotionally and have low self-confidence, which can be very mentally taxing and can lead to perceived memory problems,” she explained.

For the study, the researchers examined self-reported memory and exercise data collected from more than 1,800 breast cancer survivors, 362 of whom wore devices called “accelerometers” to track their movement.

In both groups, moderate or vigorous physical activity -- such as brisk walking, biking, jogging or engaging in exercise classes -- was found to reduce stress and fatigue. This has psychological benefits and leads to better memory, the researchers said.

While the study didn't establish a direct causeand-effect relationship, greater levels of physical activity were also linked to higher levels of selfconfidence and less distress. These improvements were also associated with fewer perceived memory problems, the study authors added.

The findings were published July 8 in Psycho-Oncology.

Komen-funded study reveals which patients will benefit most from chemotherapy

Susan G. Komen recently hailed new findings, published in The New England Journal of Medicine and supported by Komen funding, which could help some women safely avoid chemotherapy without impacting survival.

Using the 70-gene signature test (MammaPrint), collaborators throughout the United States and Europe identified whether women were at high or low clinical and genomic risk of metastasis, and used this information to determine whether the patients would receive chemotherapy. The women with early-stage breast cancer who were identified as being at high clinical risk but low genomic risk of metastasis would typically receive chemotherapy as part of their treatment. However, researchers found that foregoing chemotherapy did not significantly impact survival in this group.

“Findings from this study can provide women and physicians with an incredible tool to make informed treatment decisions – particularly with regard to those therapies that can result in life-altering side effects, like chemotherapy,” said Komen President and CEO Judy Salerno, M.D., M.S. “By expanding our knowledge of the role of tumor genetics, we are taking another step forward in ensuring that patients receive the best and most appropriate care for their individual needs.”

According to study authors, the findings suggest up to 46 percent of women with breast cancer who are at high clinical risk might not require chemotherapy. Read more in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Spirit of inclusion drives community event On Sept. 24, 2016, Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will hold its 37th annual Wheelchair Games, a much-anticipated event for wheelchair athletes as well as friends, families, and the community.

When it was introduced nearly four decades ago, the event was one of the first of its kind—and today the Wheelchair Games is still known for its spirit of inclusion, welcoming wheelchair athletes of all ages and abilities.

Burke’s beautiful 61-acre campus (785 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains) in the heart of Westchester County is the ideal setting for a day that exemplifies sportsmanship, camaraderie, and resilience. The Wheelchair Games provides disabled competitors with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability in a variety of track, field, and table tennis events. It empowers participants to build strength, coordination, endurance and selfconfidence by being active and competitive in an entirely supportive atmosphere.

“Although our annual Wheelchair Games are a competition, we emphasize camaraderie, encouragement, and inclusion for participants of all ability levels,” says Richard Sgaglio, Ph.D., senior administrator at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.

“It’s also an unforgettable experience for children and other members of the community to be inspired by the tenacity of the athletes.”

The Wheelchair Games competitive categories include a Futures Division (six and under), a separate Junior Division, Adult and separate Masters levels at age 35 and older, age 50 and older, and the senior Masters division at age 60+. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., there will be field events, table tennis, and a slalom (obstacle) course. Track events start at 1:30 p.m. A new development is that this year Burke is adding precision toss and high toss field events open to the following classes: F31, F32, and F51.

Morning event winners will be awarded during lunchtime, track event winners will be awarded after all races have been completed.

According to Wheelchair Games co-chair Tracey Bogart, “We are proud to have such a longstanding tradition of hosting these games at Burke for such a diverse group of athletes. This event is an exciting follow-up to the Summer Paralympics because it demonstrates the indomitable nature of wheelchair athletes and the wide range of physical activities they participate in.”

The regular registration fee is $25 and includes an event t-shirt, lunch and a goodie bag. Financial assistance is available for those who cannot afford the fee—and all athletes are encouraged to participate.

Admission is free for spectators and the public is encouraged to attend. In addition to watching the exciting sports competitions, the Wheelchair Games will feature carnival games, musical entertainment, and raffles. The event is produced entirely by volunteers, including Burke employees as well as community members from civic groups, schools, religious organizations, and other associations.

Healing Half Marathon and 10K to give area athletes a great run along Bronx River Parkway Proceeds from Races on October 2nd to benefit Westchester Medical Center

Area running enthusiasts craving a challenge won’t have to stray far to satisfy their appetite for competition. A rigorous test awaits them in their own backyard.

Westchester Medical Center, in partnership with Westchester County Parks, will hold its Healing Half Marathon and 10K on Sunday, October 2. This special event promoting health and wellness will take place along the iconic Bronx River Parkway, with a mix of rolling hills and steady inclines ensuring a demanding experience for hard-core runners and novices alike. Proceeds will benefit Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).

Participants will start and finish in the vicinity of the Westchester County Center. The half marathon loop will take runners south on the Bronx River Parkway to Scarsdale Road, where they’ll turn around and head back toward the County Center.

Runners in the 10K race will start a little farther south on the Bronx River Parkway and reverse course at Crane Road. The Parkway, which features stone arch bridges and beautiful views of the Bronx River, will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event.

The half marathon will begin at 8:30 a.m. (walkers only at 8 a.m.), and the 10K will begin at 9 a.m.

Awards will be presented to the top three men and women overall and in each age group.. Racers will receive a complimentary grilled cheese, delicious apple cider donut, fruit, chips, chocolate milk, a finisher medal and t-shirt, while supplies last.

Registration for the half marathon is $70 in advance and $80 on race day. Registration for the 10K is $40 in advance and $50 on race day. October is National Dental Hygiene Month October brings us a few reasons to celebrate and help spread some dental health awareness – its National Dental Hygiene Month!

According to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association website, October 2016 marks the seventh straight year that the ADHA and the William Wrigley Jr. Company are teaming together during National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM).

The ADHA and the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program (WOHP) are working collaboratively to increase public awareness about the importance of maintaining good oral health.

The “Do The Daily 4” message the NDHM & WOHP are focusing on spreading in 2016 involves the four most important components of preventative oral health maintenance:

Do The Daily 4 – Brush, Floss, Rinse, Chew

1. Brush 2x a Day, for 2 Minutes Optimal oral health in National Dental Hygiene month and beyond starts with the toothbrush.

One of the most important things we can do is to brush our teeth for two minutes, in the morning & at night before we go to bed.

Proper brushing reduces sticky-icky plaque, prevents tooth decay, and helps limit the onset of gum disease.

2. Floss DAILY Daily flossing is so important because your toothbrush doesn’t reach the spaces between your teeth, and using dental floss (or interdental brushes) are the best ways to remove any remaining food particles and plaque to prevent cavities & gum disease.

Your oral health is connected to your overall health, so skipping the daily flossing can actually make you more susceptible to infection, and other overall health issues like diabetes, stroke, heart disease, & prenatal complications – among others. Tooth decay & gum disease are 100% preventable!!

3. Daily Rinsing with Mouthwash Not only does a daily dose of mouthwash help reduce bad breath, but rinsing is another important step you can take to prevent gum disease (gingivitis).

Our teeth really only account for less than half of your mouth, so make sure to put a bow on your preventative dental health regimen each day but swishing with some mouthwash.

4. Chewing Sugar-Free Gum Maybe you just powered down a colossal cheeseburger watching your favorite sports team, or perhaps that pistachio ice cream cone didn’t stand a chance, chewing gum after eating is a great way to give your teeth & gums a little on-the-go love.

Music Conservatory of Westchester, a notfor-profit community music school in White Plains, has appointed Douglas Bish as their new Dean of Students & Faculty. Dr. Bish, who returns to the Conservatory after serving on the Conservatory’s faculty from 2006-2011, has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as an academic leader, conductor, clarinetist, educator, author, lecturer, and music clinician.

“The Conservatory is one of the truly iconic institutions for community music education in the country, and I’m thrilled to be able to play a part in guiding its future,” Dr. Bish said.

Jean Newton, the Conservatory’s executive director, said Dr. Bish was selected among a pool of worthy applicants, because of his extensive background and proven leadership.

His appointment comes at a pivotal moment in the school’s history, as it makes plans to expand its programming and develop new studios for technology-based classes. A grant from the New York State Council on the Arts is currently supporting design development for 3,500 square feet of unfinished space in the Conservatory’s White Plains building.

Dr. Bish will play a key role in crafting a strategic plan to set goals for the next four years, culminating in the school’s 90th anniversary year in 2019-2020.

The Hudson Valley American Heart Association (AHA) has announced that D. Douglas Miller, M.D., C.M., M.B.A., will serve as Executive Champion the Westchester Heart Walk event, set for Sunday, October 2nd at Kensico Dam in Valhalla. The Heart Walk is the AHA’s biggest annual event, raising more than $343,500 for AHA programs and research at last year’s event.

Miller will appeal to local businesses and community leaders to sponsor and form teams to join the Heart Walk to support the AHA’s mission to build healthier lives free from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Heart disease costs employers more than $3 billion annually, according to the American Heart Association.

Miller is the Dean of the School of Medicine at New York Medical College in Valhalla. Prior to his role at NYMC, he served as Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, as well as Chair of the Health Sciences Council at the University of Alberta.

An internationally recognized cardiologist and clinician-scientist, Dr. Miller has served as a leader in academic medicine and chief academic/executive officer for more than 25 years.

His work has resulted in more than 110 peer-reviewed papers and multiple patents, and he serves on the editorial boards of many renowned influential journals.

Westchester ‘Hair Coach’ says hair loss doesn’t have to be hopeless

By Dale McKnight Hair loss – as well as thin, brittle or otherwise damaged hair - is no laughing matter.

And with an estimated 80 million Americans suffering from hair loss and related problems, the situation is more common than many people realize.

“August is National Hair Loss Awareness month - a perfect time to educate people that they don’t have to suffer in silence,” says Diane DeMatteis of Westchester.

Diane is a licensed cosmetologist with more than two decades of experience in providing men, women and children with effective ways to combat their hair-care concerns.

She is affiliated with the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa in Mount Kisco, where she offers her Pro-Active Hair Care services.

Diane provides personalized consultations and effective treatments for damaged, dry, lifeless hair. She also addresses issues related to thinning hair or hair loss (also known as alopecia).

She has studied with notables such as Dr. Alan Bauman, a Florida-based surgeon and expert in the field of trichology – a branch of dermatology that deals with the study of hair and scalp health.

A member of the American Hair Loss Council, Diane also completed the first-ever Certified Hair Coach program in the U.S., based on a training process launched by Dr. Bauman.

“Studying and educating others about the scalp has always been my passion,” she says. “My motto is: ‘A healthy scalp is a landscape to healthy hair.’”

She adds: “People know that taking care of their gums is important for healthy teeth. It’s the same for the scalp – for healthy hair, you need a healthy scalp.”

What triggers hair problems?

“Some causes are genetic,” she says. “And most people don’t know that hereditary hair loss is manageable.

The sooner you address it, the better the results.”

She adds: “Other factors like chemicals and products we put on our hair, chlorine from pools, allergies to certain substances, or the environment can also play a role.

Each client’s case is different, which is what makes my work so interesting.”

When treating clients, Diane uses various patented hair care products, therapeutic scalp massage and, in some cases, a series of FDA-cleared laser therapy treatments to stimulate hair growth.

“Low-light laser therapy is good for certain scalp conditions such as some types of dermatitis and early stages of thinning hair,” notes Diane, who underwent special training to use the instruments.

“It can help increase density and rejuvenate hair. It’s not a magic wand that magically regrows a full head of hair, but it makes a noticeable improvement in many cases.”

Starting treatment for hair problems sooner rather than later will increase the chances of better results, she adds.

Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center holds beam signing ceremony for 32-bed ventilator expansion project On Wednesday, August 10, 2016, the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center held a celebratory beam signing of the last steel beam that will be installed as part of its 32-bed ventilator expansion. The occasion comes only a few short months since construction commenced on March 17, 2016 and since they ceremoniously broke ground on the project on November 15, 2015.

Residents of the Pediatric Center, staff members and Board Members from across our entire Continuum of Care at the Pediatric Center, the John A. Coleman School and the Children’s Rehabilitation Center took part in leaving their mark on the beam.

“The enthusiasm during this event was palpable,” said Nancy Bullock, Chief Operating Officer. “We are so very proud of this project and the immense impact that it will soon have on the lives of ventilator-dependent children and their families here in New York.”

The Pediatric Center was first in New York State to develop a longterm program for children who are dependent on ventilators and they have spent a decade honing their practice to set the standard for how this care should be delivered. Right now, they are able to care for 18 ventilator-dependent children. However, with this expansion, they will soon nearly triple this number. In fact, this $24 million, three-story addition will make the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center the largest provider of pediatric ventilator care in the State. The Pediatric Center will be able to care for a total of 50 ventilator-dependent children, bringing the total number of children it serves to 169, and the John A. Coleman School, which serves the residents of the Pediatric Center in Yonkers, will add more classrooms to educate these 32 new residents.

The project is slated to be complete and move-in ready by mid-2017.

Cerebral Palsy of Westchester is excited to announce the recent completion of our sensory room at our main location in Rye Brook. The sensory room is a separate, controlled space that provides a responsive and predictable environment. It was created to improve the development of thought, intelligence and social skills while providing a relaxing space of security and calmness. For people with profound or multiple disabilities, this room is a way to kick start sensory engagement and motivate them to want to engage in sensory experiences. The success of the space depends on how it’s used with the profound knowledge of each of the individual’s needs and desires. Our adults and children have the opportunity to explore freely while having fun!

Time spent in a sensory room has been shown to increase concentration, focus attention, improve alertness, awaken memories, and to improve mobilization, creativity, social relations and communications, and general awareness of the surrounding world.

The varied optical, acoustic, and tactile stimuli help hyperactive individuals concentrate and focus better.

Our sensory room was brought together by a great partnership with Enabling Devices. Enabling Devices is a company dedicated to developing affordable learning and assistive devices to help people of all ages with disabling conditions.

With the help of our OT & PT staff, Enabling Devices designed the layout of the room and installed all of the pieces.

National Physical Therapy Month is a wonderful opportunity for physical therapists to educate the public about

National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated each October. The goal of the month long celebration is to raise awareness of the important role that physical therapists and physical therapy assistants play in helping people decrease pain, improve mobility, and engage in healthy lifestyles.

The History of National Physical Therapy Month Initially, National Physical Therapy Week was celebrated each June starting in 1981.

In 1992, the week was moved to October so as to not conflict with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) national conference in June. It was then declared that the entire month of October would be designated National Physical Therapy Month. National Physical Therapy Month is a recognized observance on the National Health Observances Calendar.

National Physical Therapy Month Themes Each year, the APTA selects a theme to be the main focus of National Physical Therapy Month.

While all aspects of physical therapy are celebrated each October, specific emphasis is placed on the theme for the month long celebration.

Past themes have focused on many physical therapy specialties

including low back pain, posture, balance, fitness and obesity, and sports injury prevention.

In 2015, the APTA celebrated National Physical Therapy Month with an Age Well campaign. This campaign, with the hashtag #agewell, highlighted the ways your physical therapist can help you remain happy and healthy throughout the lifespan, with a special focus on those people over the age of 50 years.

Typically, the theme for National Physical Therapy Month is announced in the late summer, and pre-kick off activites are planned for late September to start to get PTs excited about the events of the month.

How is National Physical Therapy Month Celebrated?

If you have been a physical therapy patient during the month of October, there is a good chance that the clinic you went to was celebrating National Physical Therapy Month.

Often, staff members wear shirts with the APTA logo, and many times small gifts are given to patients promoting the month.

During National Physical Therapy Month physical therapists are encouraged to engage their communities in activities to promote healthy lifestyles and to raise awareness of the importance of physical therapy.
