Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further.

After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”

Simone hosts meeting of ULI Westchester/Fairfield Chapter at new Boyce Thompson Center in Yonkers Simone Development Companies, developer of the Boyce Thompson Center, recently hosted a breakfast meeting of Westchester/Fairfield Chapter of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) at the new mixed-use center in Yonkers. 100 people attended the September 23 program which included tours of the 85,000-square-foot center which is nearing completion.

It might seem hard to believe, but the celebration that is Thanksgiving Day is almost here. Thanksgiving is a U.S. holiday, but giving thanks is universal.

It brings with it a reminder to stop and give thanks for all of the things in our lives that we have, and the amazing friends and families we are all fortunate enough to have in our lives.

Thanksgiving is not just a placeholder between Halloween and Christmas: It is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have. Thanksgiving traces its origins to ancient harvest festivals.

It became an official U.S. holiday in 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln. In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed a law fixing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November.

From there, it has been feasts, football and family.

Thanksgiving is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have. Take a look around: You have so much to be thankful for!

Six Westchester Medical Center Health Network Staff Members to Go the Distance to Make a Difference at TCS NYC Marathon Donations are being accepted for Team Members running on November 6 in support of patients at 10 hospital affiliates across the Hudson Valley

Six Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) employees from network facilities across the Hudson Valley will channel the fighting spirit demonstrated by so many of their patients when they team up to Go the Distance to Make a Difference in the TCS New York City Marathon November 6.

The team’s six members – two doctors, two registered nurses, a physician’s assistant and a hospital administrator – all of whom are motivated by their own special stories – will compete in support of the life-changing and lifesaving care provided by WMCHealth’s 10 Hudson Valley hospitals. Each competitor is dedicating his or her efforts to the patients they care for each day. “This collective effort is yet another example of WMCHealth’s dedication to the hundreds of thousands of Hudson Valley residents who entrust

our organization to provide the very best care for them and their loved ones,” said Michael D. Israel, President and CEO, Westchester Medical Center Health Network. “Running a marathon is not unlike some of the medical challenges faced by our patients as both require internal strength and perseverance.

Participating in the TCS New York City Marathon in order to raise funds that will stay right here in the region and help our neighbors during their greatest time of need is in the true spirit of WMCHealth’s mission.”

Here’s a closer look at the runners who will Go the Distance to Make a Difference for the Hudson Valley.

Adele Rushneck, RN, Valhalla – Running for Westchester Medical Center, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

Adele Rushneck knows a thing or two about trauma. A member of the WMCHealth team for 37 years, she is the Assistant Nurse Manager in Westchester Medical Center’s Trauma Intensive Care Unit. Despite her background, nothing could have prepared Rushneck for the sudden, unexpected loss of her son in 2013, when she was training to run her first marathon.

Devastated, Rushneck stopped running for several weeks. Eventually, believing her son would have wanted her to finish what she had started, she rededicated herself to training. And in what she deemed a “healing experience,” Rushneck went on to complete the New York City Marathon. “Life is a marathon, and no matter what you may be facing, I believe it is important to set your sights on a goal or a path, dig deep and stay focused,” she said. This year’s event will mark Rushneck’s third TCS New York City Marathon. She’ll be running in honor of all Westchester Medical Center patients, as well as the staff that is so committed to their care. “It might not be easy, but you will get to that finish line or you will get on the right path,” she said.

Stephen Ferrando, MD, West Harrison – Running for the Behavioral Health Center, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network

As Stephen Ferrando, MD, paces himself through his third TCS New York City Marathon – he’s run in more than 40 marathons total – he’ll have the minds of others in mind.

Dr. Ferrando is Director of Psychiatry for WMCHealth’s Behavioral Health Center, which has offered a full spectrum of inpatient, outpatient, community and emergency mental health care for individuals and families since 1929. He recognizes that, much like a marathon, his work and that of others to gain acceptance and understanding of mental health challenges has been long and arduous. But he will continue to pound the pavement, and he hopes his latest 26.2-mile journey can be an impactful step in the right direction.

“Behavioral health and mental health are key aspects of who we all are, but the issue is often accompanied by a stigma,” Dr. Ferrando said. “By running the TCS NYC Marathon in support of our patients, I hope to help raise awareness and minimize that stigma.”

Nearly 1,000 Westchester area residents laced up their sneakers for a heart-healthy walk at Kensico Dam yesterday at the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk event. Many walkers formed company teams and walked for a festive team outing, but, more importantly, for their heart health.

Many others, like Jake Breen’s family, walked to honor lives saved because of treatment advancements made possible from scientific research.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the No. 1 killer of all Americans. In fact, someone dies from CVD every 39 seconds. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, killing more women than all forms of cancer ----. Congenital cardiovascular defects, like one-year old Jake Breen was born with, are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.

Jake Breen was born on April 14, 2015. His pediatrician detected a heart murmur which was diagnosed by a pediatric cardiologist as Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)--a hole separating the two lower chambers of the heart which causes lower oxygen levels to the body. Jake didn’t gain weight

and struggled to breathe while nursing. After four months, the hole did not close on its own and Jake had open heart surgery at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Westchester to repair the defect. Jake was released less than 72 hours after having open heart surgery. His parents call him their miracle baby.

Emcee Lisa LaRocca, News 12 reporter, shared Jake’s story with the crowd. Quoting his mother, Mary Katherine Breen, she said, after Jake’s surgery, “It was the first time he had ever breathed easy in his life. For the first time I saw color in his cheeks. For the first time I was able to feed him when he wanted to be fed. For the first time when I held him I felt his heart beat at a normal pace.”

Early detection, advances in science and treatments of congenital heart defects helps save lives, and that is what inspired the Breen family to join the Heart Walk.

Westchester ‘Hair Coach’ says hair loss doesn’t have to be hopeless

By Dale McKnight Hair loss – as well as thin, brittle or otherwise damaged hair - is no laughing matter.

And with an estimated 80 million Americans suffering from hair loss and related problems, the situation is more common than many people realize.

“August is National Hair Loss Awareness month - a perfect time to educate people that they don’t have to suffer in silence,” says Diane DeMatteis of Westchester.

Diane is a licensed cosmetologist with more than two decades of experience in providing men, women and children with effective ways to combat their hair-care concerns.

She is affiliated with the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa in Mount Kisco, where she offers her Pro-Active Hair Care services.

Diane provides personalized consultations and effective treatments for damaged, dry, lifeless hair. She also addresses issues related to thinning hair or hair loss (also known as alopecia).

She has studied with notables such as Dr. Alan Bauman, a Florida-based surgeon and expert in the field of trichology – a branch of dermatology that deals with the study of hair and scalp health.

5 facts about family caregivers

As American society gets grayer, families are taking the lead role in providing care for aging adults. Most American adults say a family member is caring for their aging parent who needs help handling their affairs or caring for themselves. And if they’re not already helping out a parent, most expect to do so someday.

Here are five facts about caregivers of older Americans for National Family Caregivers Month:

There are 40.4 million unpaid caregivers of adults ages 65 and older in the United States. Of that group, nine-in-ten are providing care for an aging relative, and a plurality is caring for a parent, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Caregivers may perform a range of activities, such as providing companionship, assisting with housework or providing medical and other forms of physical care.

Among caregivers of older adults, most provide help to one aging adult, but 22% provide help to two and 7% provide help to three or more. Roughly half of these caregivers have been providing help for two years or less. More than a third have been providing care for five or more years.

Most caregivers of older adults provide help to others weekly or less often. One-in-five caregivers say they provide care on a daily basis.

Many are also juggling their own jobs with their caregiving responsibilities. Six-in-ten (61%) caregivers are employed, including nearly half who work full-time.

Adults ages 45 to 64 are the most likely to be caregivers.

In fact, about a quarter (23%) of adults ages 45 to 64 cares for an aging adult.

A significant share of adults ages 65 and older – 17% – serve as caregivers for another aging American. These adults, who themselves are advanced in age, are the second most likely age group to be caregivers. Many in this group are caring for a spouse or partner (29%) or a friend or neighbor (33%).

Most caregiving for aging parents is not in the form of financial support or personal care. More commonly, adults have helped their parent with errands, housework or home repairs.

A recent Pew Research survey asked about specific types of support adults may have provided for their aging parents in the last 12 months. About six-in-ten adults with at least one parent age 65 or older say they have helped their parent with errands, housework or home repairs.

A significantly smaller share has provided financial help to a parent age 65 and older. Among this group, nearly half say providing financial support was for a special circumstance, while 43% say it was for a recurring expense.

Relatively few caregivers say they helped with personal care, such as bathing or getting dressed. Women are twice as likely as men to say they provided this type of care for an aging cont. on next page parent (19% vs. 8%).

Emotional support is a big part of caregiving. Most adults say they provide some emotional support for their aging parents, but more women say this than men. Fully 68% of adults say they do this at least sometimes, including about one-third who provided emotional support to their parent frequently.

Some 39% of women say they provide emotional support frequently to an aging parent compared with 30% of men.

Most adults who have helped an aging parent see it as rewarding; relatively few say it is stressful. Among those who have helped their parents in a matter of ways – financially, with errands housework, or home repairs or with personal care – 88% say it’s rewarding. Roughly one-third (32%) of adults who have helped with any of these tasks say helping an aging parent is stressful.

Americans are generally comfortable with the level of care they are providing for their aging parents. About three-quarters of adults with at least one parent ages 65 or older say that their aging parent (or parents) expects about the right amount of support from them. Just 8% say they are expected to do too much for their parents. Women (11%) are more likely to feel this way than men (4%).

Such programs improve quality of life for folks caring for terminal cancer patients, study finds

Palliative care that's offered soon after a terminal cancer diagnosis can also help caregivers, a new study indicates.

“This study suggests that early palliative care creates a powerful positive feedback loop in families facing cancer,” study author Dr. Areej El-Jawahri said in news release from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

She noted that patients get a direct benefit from such care, and it seems that “their caregivers experience a positive downstream effect, which may make it easier for them to care for their loved ones.” El-Jawahri is an oncologist with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston.

The study included 275 family caregivers. Their loved ones had recently been diagnosed with lung and gastrointestinal cancers.

The cancers were incurable.

The patients let the researchers know who their primary caregiver was. It could have been a friend or family member. The researchers met with the caregivers at the start of the study. They saw the caregivers again at 12 and 24 weeks.

Introducing palliative care shortly after cancer diagnosis led to better quality of life for caregivers. It also led to fewer symptoms of depression among the caregivers, the study found.

This study is the first to show that offering palliative care early may offer significant benefits for people caring for dying cancer patients, the researchers said.

The findings are to be presented Wednesday during a briefing that will preview the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting in Chicago. Studies are generally considered preliminary until they've been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Why is Asset Based Long-Term Care Insurance the best option now?

Most insurance brokers understand that no client wants to pay health insurance premiums forever.

As people get older and eventually exit the workforce, they generally prefer to reduce or eliminate bills. They would much rather self-insure and keep their money than pay for health insurance that they may never use. But what happens when they simply do not have enough capital to employ this strategy? The obvious answer has always been to share the risk with an highly rated insurance company. Today, in light of the recent long-term care rate increases, what insurance product they utilize to share this risk is the real issue. We will explore this new product strategy in this article.

Most people readily identify with an Asset Based LTC insurance strategy that provides the following benefits: 12345-

Leverage - owner can multiply his/her existing asset to create at least three or more times the dollars in benefits.

Liquidity - owner retains control of asset instead of sending nonrefundable premiums to an insurance company.

Recovery - owner family can recover a specified amount greater than the original deposits in case of death.

Guarantees - owner premiums & benefits are guaranteed for the life of the contract.

Fixed - owner premiums are fixed for a specific period of time, usually less than 10 years.

People want guarantees, but unfortunately, traditional long-term care health insurance does not offer them. As a result, the retail insurance market has been shifting to an Asset Based LTC insurance model. Retired people simply do not want to worry about where they are going to find the dollars needed to pay increasing premiums or if they can even afford to pay these future premiums. Most agree that they would prefer to pay a fixed guaranteed premium for a specific period of time, usually less than 10 years, in exchange for lifelong coverage.

Example: Sally is a retired 65 year old widowed grandmother and wants long-term care insurance. She explains that her family consists of two adult married children and five grandchildren. She wants to secure the long-term care insurance coverage in case she needs home health care as she is all alone and her children live out of state. She also makes it clear that she wants to guarantee that most of her assets pass directly to her beneficiaries in case of her death.

Sally decides to purchase an Asset Based Universal Life policy with a Long-Term Care Rider for $15,000 a year. As per the terms of the contract, she pays for only 10 years and then the policy benefits will be paid up. In year one, Sally has secured $364,971 in guaranteed tax-free long-term care insurance, $210,156 in guaranteed tax-free life insurance and $157,617 of guaranteed tax-free terminal illness coverage1.

Assuming Sally pays all 10 years of premiums, at age 75 her policy has grown with the 3% inflation rider to $402,799 in guaranteed tax-free long-term care insurance, $221,602 in guaranteed tax-free life insurance and $166,201 of guaranteed tax-free terminal illness coverage2. If Sally lives to age 84, her policy will grow to $444,830 in guaranteed tax-free long-term care insurance, $210,156 in guaranteed tax-free life insurance and $157,617 in guaranteed tax-free terminal illness coverage3.

Additionally, due to the liquidity feature of her insurance policy, Sally always has access to her deposits in the case of emergencies. She has also guaranteed herself access to that money in case of a terminal illness or lifestyle change. Readers will be hard pressed to find another guaranteed insurance contract that covers all of life's eventualities.

Preventive care for people with diabetes—and for the risk factors that cause related health problems—has improved significantly over the past 20 years, and people are living longer and better with the disease. But living longer can mean having other health problems longer, too. Good management over a lifetime is the key, starting with the day you're told you have diabetes.

There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant). With type 1 diabetes, your body can't make insulin, so you need to take insulin every day. Type 1 diabetes is less common than type 2 diabetes; about 5% of the people who have diabetes have type 1. Currently, no one knows how to prevent type 1 diabetes.

Learning how to take care of your type 2 diabetes shouldn't happen only when you're diagnosed; it should be a lifelong focus. And as you get older, your treatment may need to change. Managing diabetes from the beginning can mean fewer health problems later on.
