Three Local Kids Auditioning for School of Rock – The Musical on Broadway

With the help of two Ossining businesses -- Mike Risko Music School and photographer Greg Perry, three local students are auditioning for School of Rock — The Musical, which recently opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. The show is holding an open casting call for “a new wave of pint-size rockers,” offering a “once-in-a-lifetime chance to join the most famous kid band of all time.” The three local children – Jade Marie Kielb, 11 and Chris Grant, 9 both of Ossining, and Hayden Gelman, an 8th grader in Hendrick-Hudson schools, who lives in Cortlandt Manor – will be auditioning.

“The casting agency sent us the information and we were excited to send students to audition. Jade Marie, Chris and Hayden are students at Mike Risko Music School, and we’re working with them to get them ready for the audition,” said Mike Risko. “The audition process experience alone is so valuable regardless of the outcome. We will celebrate their hard work, and no matter what the outcome, they will be rock stars!”

Jade Marie, Chris and Hayden, and the thousands of other children auditioning, will have to be able to sing 18 bars of a contemporary song. Mike Risko Music will be working with them on their audition materials and coaching them to be able to play

and sing at the same time, as well as helping them put together their resumes. Ossining photographer Greg Perry has provided the students with a free photo shoot and headshots for their auditions.

Jade Marie studies voice, piano and she just started studying the bass for the audition. Chris studies drums and he’s doing some singing lessons to prepare him for the audition. Hayden has been performing since she was 5 years old.

She’s learning the bass at Mike Risko Music to help prepare her for this audition. She’s involved in many shows and recorded a holiday song for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade last year.

"This is such a great opportunity for our kids and we are so happy to have guidance from Mike Risko Music," said Chris’s mom, Stephanie Grant. “All kids should have amazing opportunities like this.”

“Jade Marie has enjoyed music since she was little and seeing her audition for the School of Rock on Broadway makes us very proud parents. I definitely encourage and recommend all parents who have musically-inclined children to motivate them to participate in activities that challenge and help them grow,” said Jade’s mom, Adelina Kielb.

Emotional Eating is a scary topic especially for women. It’s hard to understand, but it always seems to be lurking within us.

Diets usually help us deal with what we eat, but rarely with the entire story.

Even when we can control eating emotionally and lose weight, it always seems to come back to us.

Emotional eating is something we have taught ourselves that will bring comfort for the emotional things that we face in life. It allows us to take our minds off the pain and feel pleasure! Sounds like a great plan! In reality the feelings are temporary and come with weight gain and unhappiness.

Eating Emotionally is a learned habit that can be unlearned. The best thing is take a look at your eating triggers like stress, anxiety, sadness or even happiness and excitement. The best way to combat this is to make some lifestyle changes. Tracking your triggers and developing a strategy to reduce eating patterns you should eliminate. It may be a new gym or an exercise plan to eliminate stress.

This doesn’t mean anyone is perfect. A good emotional health is having the ability to experience all of your feelings, even when they are difficult and intense.

It is a process that involves learning to eat for health, but keeping your favorite foods in your life in moderation!

River Cruising River cruising is one of the latest travel trends. Most of us have seen advertising for river cruising and a lot of us have a friend or acquaintance who has taken one.

T here’s a good reason for this it’s a great way to experience several cities without constantly unpacking.

You can enjoy the sites go by while sailing to your next destination and will have luxurious accommodations. If you too are also considering this for your next travel adventure, here are some things to know before you go.

Destinations-Although they are most closely associated with cruising the Rhine and Danube rivers of Europe, there are other destinations that offer river cruising.

The Douro river in Portugal, the Yangtze, Irrawaddy and Mekong Rivers of Asia, the Amazon in South America and the great Nile in Africa are several other options.

This is not the cruise you know-River cruise ships are much smaller than their oceangoing cousins. Most ships sailing the rivers have less than 200 cabins, with some in Asia with less that 50. The food is very good quality and though there are fewer choices of restaurants, there are many choices on the menu, including regional specialities. Additionally, with so many less people on board, it is easy to make a specific request to accommodate any dietary concerns. There is evening entertainment on a smaller scale. Although you won’t have as many options as a large ocean ship, such as casinos and broadway shows, you won’t have a chance to be bored since you spend so much time ashore. You also typically dock in the city and are able to take a short walk to the city center and a lot of your excursions are including in your fare.

Not all cruise lines are the same-There are many companies that offer river cruises and they are not one size fits all.

Some have a lower sailing cost with more optional items to purchase later, some are allinclusive where everything, including multiple excursions, are part of the deal for no extra cost. Some ships are all suites while some have smaller cabins. Just as there are many types of travelers, there are many types of ships to suit them.

Worried about seasickness? The rivers are so smooth that you are almost guaranteed not to have an issue with this.

The Annual Meeting of the MSSNY House of Delegates will take place from Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 17.

The location for the 2016 meeting will be at The Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York. The House will convene at 8 AM on Friday and adjourn at approximately noon time on Sunday.Not enough can be said about the importance of the House of Delegates in expressing freely its ability to represent the members of MSSNY and the physicians of New York State. Policy and organizational direction for the Society are determined by 330 voting delegates to the Annual Meeting of the Medical Society of the State of New York. It is through this process that the membership governs the policy and administration of the Medical Society.

Represented at the Annual House of Delegates are sixty county medical societies, New York State medical specialty societies, medical and osteopathic schools, district branches and the special sections of the Medical Society membership (i.e. young physicians, resident physicians, medical students). The elected leadership of MSSNY also attends the House of Delegates as voting members.

The House of Delegates is the final authority on all activities of the Medical Society of the State of New York.

The Annual meeting provides direction for leadership and staff and determines official positions of the organization and sets its policies.

New Phelps Medical Facility opens in Dobbs Ferry Phelps staff and colleagues from Northwell Health gathered recently to celebrate the opening of the new Dobbs Ferry Phelps Medical Associates offices.

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center has established a brand new 6,000-square-foot state-of-the-art medical facility at 11 Ashford Avenue in Dobbs Ferry, above Walgreens, which offers primary and specialty medical care and will soon offer diagnostic radiology and cardiovascular services.

White Plains Hospital recently opened the door to the future of cancer care in Westchester County when it unveiled its new and expanded Center for Cancer Care. The Hospital’s Dickstein Cancer Center, constructed 17 years ago, was the first freestanding cancer center between New York City and New Haven. Since then, the Hospital has continually expanded programs and services in oncology, contributing to a legacy of outstanding cancer care in the community.

The Hospital has added a six-story tower with a new entrance, lobby, amenities, and physician offices that connects to the existing Dickstein building, providing a total of 70,000 square feet for cancer care. Cancer patients now have a diverse range of services for diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials, survivorship, patient support and amenities under one roof, giving them unparalleled access to comprehensive, integrated cancer care, close to home.

Conveniently located on Longview Avenue in White Plains, the expanded facility has more than doubled in size to accommodate a growing demand. Many specialty oncology offices are now onsite, and there is added space for complementary therapies such as massage, yoga, and healing touch. Amenities for both patients and families include a medical library, meditation rooms, a gift shop, a café, wig fitting services, and valet parking.

The expanded Center for Cancer Care will also house offices for the Hospital’s

growing number of cancer experts who have joined White Plains Hospital since 2011.

The new center also includes expansive conference space to accommodate regular tumor board conferences, where physicians from a variety of specialties meet to collaborate on the best treatment plans for each individual patient.

Taking into account the immense changes in modern life, the business world, and students’ daily needs, the School of Business at the Hudson Campus of Long Island University is revamping its Master in Business Administration (MBA) program.

Designed for working adults, the program - based at the LIU Hudson graduate-school campus that’s located in Purchase, Westchester County; and in Orangeburg, Rockland County – focuses on streamlined content and enhanced academics. “It’s a highly interactive curriculum, with a lot of faceto-face learning� that balances its online study component, says Kevin Nash, PhD, director of MPA and MBA Programs at the LIU Hudson Campus.

Classes in the 39-credit MBA program are held evenings and on Saturdays to benefit busy working students, taught by professors who have real-world, current experience in their fields. The program also makes it possible for students to get credit for certain prior business studies.

As part of its new approach, the MBA study track has also introduced a new Business Internship course. “This allows students to begin their graduate studies right after they receive their undergraduate degree,� says Nash.

“It involves a 15-week supervised internship that includes businesses right here in the Hudson Valley region.�

MBA students can choose from study concentrations including Management, Finance, Healthcare Sector Management, or the Business of Pharmaceutics and Biotechnology. “Along with traditional finance and business management, healthcare is an area that has undergone enormous changes in recent years, and we’re helping students prepare for careers in the field,� says Nash.

Another option for LIU Hudson students – they can study first for advanced certificate programs in Finance or Healthcare Management, which prepare them for stepping into the full-fledged MBA program. “The redesigned MBA program is exciting and challenging,� adds Nash. “Classes are small; they’re designed for about ten to twelve students, and are discussion-driven. So participation – and learning – is maximized.�

He adds: “Another advantage is that, even though you’re on a small campus here, you have the benefit of receiving personal attention, and you’re also part of LIU – a major institution.�

• Suck on mints, chew on gum, or try fresh citrus fruits if you have a metallic taste in your mouth. Brushing your teeth before eating, using plastic utensils, and cooking in glassware can also help.

Today many people are engaged in “Medicaid Planning” with a certified elder law attorney. What does this kind of planning mean and why do they do it? In order to become eligible for Extended Medicaid coverage, an individual must not exceed their state’s minimum income & asset requirements1. This usually requires that a person transfer assets out of their estate in order to protect those assets from expensive long-term care bills. Moreover, any gifts or transfers have a 60 month look back period regarding eligibilty2.

Most people are very familiar with the “Medicaid Spend-Down” scenario and how devastating this can be to most families financially. Paying for the cost of long-term care of a loved one dollar-for-dollar is never a good option. Many families are financially ruined because of the cost of extended care. It is essential that every person carry out their estate planning advanced directives regarding long-term care services beforehand. Otherwise, expenses resulting from extended care can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So what medical bills can be counted toward a spend-down?

Your own medical bills.

Your spouse’s medical bills.

Parent’s bills for their children’s spend down.

Bills of a child living with you.

Bills of a child who does not live with you, but whose medical bills you help pay for.

Past unpaid medical bills (sometimes up to 6 years old) for yourself or any of the people named above.

The part of any medical bill not covered by Medicare or private insurance.

Medical expenses (including insurance premiums) paid for you by certain public programs, for example, the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Program (EPIC) and the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Despite knowing about this potentially enormous liability, many people still do not purchase long-term care insurance because they see it as too expensive. They just do not want to pay the premiums every year nor do they want to worry about those premiums increasing sometime in the future. So instead, they decide to transfer the majority of their assets out of their estate to facilitate eligibility for Medicaid benefits in five years.

Having said that, there still remains the danger of a claim during the transfer period. Often, attorneys recommend that the Medicaid Planning involve the purchase of a temporary long-term care policy with a five year benefit period in order to “bridge” the liability of the 60 month look back period as per the Deficit Reduction Omnibus Reconciliation Act 2005. Once the look back period has expired, the client can cancel their coverage and avoid paying any future premiums. This strategy however still costs money, typically $30,000 to $50,0003. And furthermore, what happens if the client dies?

The following example solves this problem quite easily.

What if the client has the means to purchase a Single Premium Universal Life Insurance policy with a Long-Term Care Rider instead of the traditional LTCI policy in order to “bridge” the gap? These contracts are often referred to as “Linked” policies because during the 60 month look back period the client not only has adequate long-term care insurance, but also has a guaranteed life insurance death benefit that is higher than the original deposit.

And what if the policy can be cancelled for a 100% return of premium after the 60 month look back period with no surrender charges?

Sounds too good to be true? Well, several carriers currently offer linked products with guaranteed return or premium riders4. Thus, the client can buy the insurance and keep it in force until such time as they no longer need it and their assets are fully protected. This strategy completes the entire leveraged transaction at no cost to the insured.

EXAMPLE: Jane is a 67 year old non-smoking female who purchases a single premium $150,000 Linked Universal Life Insurance policy with a Long-Term Care Rider to insure her liability while she waits for her assets to become Medicaid ineligible in 60 months. The $150,000 single premium buys her $317,943 of life insurance and $580,566 of long-term care coverage from day one.

Assuming there are no claims, at the end of five years, she can surrender the contract and receive 100% of her premium back with no surrender charges. The transaction is essentially a 60 month FREE loan with some very significant tax-free insurance benefits5.

The Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) unveiled plans to build a $230-million, 280,000-square-foot Ambulatory Care Pavilion adjacent to Westchester Medical Center on its Valhalla campus, which would be the largest healthcare construction project in the county in decades. The announcement was made at a meeting of the Westchester County Local Development Corporation (LDC), an agency created by Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino, which makes tax-exempt financing available to not-for-profit institutions at no risk to taxpayers.

“Hospitals have long been critical to our quality of life in Westchester, but they are also a fast-growing part of our county’s economy,” said Astorino. “Today’s announcement represents a giant boost for both healthcare and the economy. This is the single biggest financing for our LDC to date and by working together with Westchester Medical Center, we are improving healthcare outcomes and creating jobs, which is a winning combination.”

“Westchester Medical Center, now WMCHealth, has been an integral part of the healthcare and economic fabric of Westchester and the region for more than 100 years,” said WMCHealth President and CEO Michael D. Israel.

“As the area’s leading provider of healthcare services and with a growing network of seven hospitals and a workforce of more than 10,000 people, our commitment to the region has never been stronger.

“The development of an ambulatory care hub on our Valhalla campus will respond to key changes in health care delivery, while addressing a critical shortage of space as our programs and patient volume continue to grow. This project will enable us to offer outpatient services currently

Israel said that the dramatic eight-story steel and glass Ambulatory Care Pavilion will include 185,000 square feet of ambulatory care service space, including an Advanced Imaging Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center and Heart and Vascular Institute, and a 20,000-square-foot private-room expansion for Westchester Medical Center, plus another 75,000 square feet for physician offices.

Expected to generate 180 new full-time jobs when complete as well as 225 prevailing wage construction jobs, the WMCHealth Ambulatory Care Pavilion is believed to be one of Westchester’s largest non-residential building projects in recent memory, and the largest healthcare project since Westchester Medical Center’s 400,000-square-foot main tower was built in 1977 and its 250,000-square-foot Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital was built in 2004.

“This is just another example of the significant investments that WMCHealth is making to further its mission of providing the finest care as close to home for the adults and children of our region,” said Mitchell Hochberg, Chair of the network’s Board of Directors. “A project of this scale reflects continued investment in the health of Westchester County and the Hudson Valley both in the form of healthcare resources, services and economic development.”

Israel said that WMCHealth was proud to partner with County Executive Astorino and the LDC on collaborating on a project of this importance.

“By the time WMCHealth’s Ambulatory Care Pavilion cares for its first patients in 2018, we will have invested nearly $1 billion in infrastructure, technology, renovation and expansion on the Valhalla campus alone, in just over a decade,” Israel added.

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.
