Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further.

After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”

10 Tips to help you achieve your New Year’s health goals With the new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start.

For many people, this means leading a healthier lifestyle and losing weight. If this is your goal, follow these tips to stay on track.

1. Find Your Motivation What is motivating you to lose weight? Do you want to look better in your clothes, feel more energetic, or simply improve your health? Get clear about what you want, and then use that to inspire you throughout your journey.

2. Have a Plan If you were to go on a long road trip, you wouldn't just jump in the car and go. If you did, you'd arrive hungry, tired, and fatigued. That's the same way you'd feel if you jumped into a whole new lifestyle with no planning. Before January 1st arrives, outline the changes you want to implement and decide how you'll fit them into your schedule. Keep in mind that it may be best to take steps rather than tackle everything at once.

3. Make Goals Goals help measure progress. If you don't know where you want to end up, you won't really know how to get there. When making your goals, you need to make SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. For example, a SMART goal would be something like, “I will walk for 15 minutes 3 days for one week.” Or, “I will prepare one new healthy recipe each week for the month of January.”

4. Track What You Eat Looking closely at what you eat is often an eyeopening experience. Use FitDay's free online Calorie Counter and Fitness Log to keep track of everything you put into your body. You don't have to do it for the rest of your life, but it is a great habit to start. Tracking will help you

7. Fill Up on Vegetables Vegetables are filled with nutrients, water, fiber, and very few calories. If you fill half of your plate with vegetables, you'll get fuller faster and cut down your calories without feeling deprived. Use herbs and spices to jazz up vegetables instead of using butter and/or salt to flavor them.

8. Exercise In order to burn calories at a faster rate and build a healthy body, you'll need to incorporate exercise into your life. Take it slow at first, and then increase your time and/or intensity once you feel comfortable. If you haven't exercised in a while, talk to your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough to begin an exercise plan.

9. Take It Slow A major mistake many people make when trying to tackle a health resolution is trying to do everything at once. This is almost always a recipe for disaster. Spend a few weeks just trying to achieve 1-2 goals at a time. When you have established new good habits, put a couple more goals on your plate. Remember: You want to make permanent changes, and these will take time to implement.

10. Be Prepared for Lapses A lapse is when you temporarily "fall off the wagon." This is a normal part of the process; no one is perfect. It is important for you to take a moment to recognize that you got sidetracked, but don't use it as an excuse to throw in the towel. Every day is a new chance to start over, so return to your healthy lifestyle immediately.

Top 5 weight-loss plans for the New Year

Most diet plans claim to offer the same results, including a slim figure and better health. But which ones actually deliver?

A team of health experts has weighed in, ranking 35 diet plans on overall performance. The evaluations were based on seven categories, including nutrition, promise of short-term and long-term weight loss, and ability to fight chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes, according to U.S. News and World Report, which commissioned the evaluation.

Here are the experts' top five weight-loss plans for the new year.

1. The DASH Diet. Here’s one you may not have heard of before. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet was first developed to lower blood pressure but quickly became popular as a way to lose weight. The diet is low in salt and rich in fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein and nuts.

Who should be on it? The Mayo Clinic Diet is for people who want to get serious about weight loss and developing healthy habits.

2. The TLC Diet. The main aim of the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes Diet plan is to significantly reduce saturated fat intake.

It’s a low-fat diet with an emphasis on limiting the amount of meat and whole milk products consumed.

Who should be on it? This one’s best for people with a risk of diabetes.

Who should be on it? The DASH diet is recommended for people with hypertension, or high blood pressure, or prehypertension.

Who should be on it? Health experts recommend this diet for people who want to cut down on cholesterol.

3. The Mayo Clinic Diet. This diet comes in two parts: the “Lose it!” phase and the “Live it!” phase. During the Lose it! phase, dieters spend two weeks exercising daily and developing healthy habits. The Live it! phase is spent learning about food choices, portion control and menu planning.

4. The Mediterranean Diet. Living a Mediterranean lifestyle, with an emphasis on fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and olive oil, is the focus of the Mediterranean Diet. The menu is high on whole grains and veggies as well as seafood.

5. Weight Watchers. One of the most recognized names in the diet industry, Weight Watchers is all about the obvious: losing weight. The program is built around a points system in which foods are given values that add up to a daily total. The diet is extremely flexible, provided you stay within the allotted point limit.

Who should be on it? People who want to take weight loss to the next level.

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital unveils “Faces of Burke”

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will be presenting “Faces of Burke”, a traveling photography exhibit designed to showcase the individuality and courage of its patients. The compelling photographs and stories of the subjects illustrate a diverse and inspiring group of patients who have succeeded in regaining mobility and independence through their experience at Burke.

“Burke treats patients who demonstrate remarkable resilience and determination, striving with such courage during the rehabilitative process,” says Richard Sgaglio, Ph.D., senior administrator at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. “We felt that a photo exhibit would dramatically bring their stories to life for the community.”

The exhibit is open to the public through Dec. 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Burke Hospital Lobby (785 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY).

Following its showcase at Burke, the exhibit will travel to Ridge Hill in Yonkers and other locations in the region. The featured photographer for the exhibit is Jesse Rinka, who is based in Tarrytown.

The photo gallery will feature portraits of six Burke patients, along with their riveting stories: · Max—From amputee to resuming motocross competitions

· Barbara—From orthopedic surgery to hiking the Mount Everest trail · Luke—From a paralyzing spinal cord injury to walking on his own

Cervical Health Awareness Month

Cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women. But over the last 30 years, the cervical cancer death rate has gone down by more than 50%. The main reason for this change was the increased use of screening tests. Screening can find changes in the cervix before cancer develops. It can also find cervical cancer early − in its most curable stage. Another way to prevent cervical cancer is to get vaccinated against human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes most cases of cervical cancer.

The American Cancer Society is actively fighting cervical cancer on many fronts. We are helping people get tested for cervical cancer, helping them understand their diagnosis, and helping them get the treatments they need. The American Cancer Society also funds new research to help prevent, find, and treat cervical cancer.

Important information about… preventing birth defects

What are birth defects?

Birth defects are abnormal conditions that happen before or at the time of birth. Some are mild–like an extra finger or toe. Some are very serious– like a heart defect. They can cause physical, mental, or medical problems.

Some, like Down syndrome or sickle cell anemia, are caused by genetic factors. Others are caused by certain drugs, medicines or chemicals. But the causes of most birth defects are still a mystery. Researchers are working hard to learn the causes of birth defects so that we can find ways to prevent them.

How serious are birth defects?

One in 33 babies is born with a birth defect. Many people believe that birth defects only happen to other people. Birth defects can and do happen in any family. About 120,000 babies in the U.S. each year have birth defects.

What is the good news?

The good news is that new ways of preventing and treating birth defects are being found. Genes that may cause birth defects are being found every day, providing hope for new treatments and cures.

Genetic counseling provides parents with information about their risks based on family history, age, ethnic or racial background, or other factors.

Better healthcare for mothers with problems like diabetes or seizures can improve their chances of having healthy babies. Immunization prevents infections like German measles (rubella) that can harm unborn babies.

Today, babies born with birth defects can live longer and healthier lives.

Special care after birth and newborn screening tests can help these babies.

What steps can women take to prevent birth defects?

Not all birth defects can be prevented. But a woman can increase her ownchance of having a healthy baby. Many birth defects happen very early in pregnancy, sometimes before a woman even knows she is pregnant.

Remember that about half of all pregnancies are unplanned. Here are some steps a woman can take to get ready for a healthy pregnancy: • • • •

Get early prenatal care and go to every appointment.

Take a vitamin with 400 micrograms (mcg) folic acid every day.

Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and street drugs.

Keep hands clean by washing them often with soap and water to prevent infections.

Talk with the health care professional about any medical problems and medicine use (both prescription and over-the-counter).

Ask about avoiding any substances at work or at home that might be harmful to a developing baby.

Eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Avoid unpasteurized (raw) milk and foods made from it.

Avoid eating raw or under cooked meat.

Expanded physician teams, collaborative approach, and the latest technology add up to a comprehensive patient experience

A new era of community-based healthcare was ushered in with the ribbon-cutting of a state-of-the-art surgical and oncology pavilion at NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital. Top hospital administrators, medical staff, and community and government leaders toured the new 36,000-square-foot space to learn about services offered at NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence.

The cancer center, is a collaboration between Columbia University Medical Center, our academic partner, and NYP Lawrence Hospital, and provides a comprehensive menu of services from prevention to diagnosis to advanced treatments and survivorship. New operating rooms will serve all of the inpatient surgical needs of the hospital. Radiation oncology, a new program for the hospital, includes a PET (positron emission tomography)/CT (computerized tomography) Scan and a LINAC (linear accelerator) machine.

The LINAC offers the most advanced linear accelerator available.

A satellite laboratory and pharmacy are situated adjacent to the infusion therapy suite for an efficient flow.

Patients now have access to disease-specific management teams focused on areas such as breast, lung, and gynecologic cancer. The physician teams include cancer specialists who are members of the highly regarded NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Westchester and ColumbiaDoctors faculty practices.

Cardiovascular Department at Phelps Hospital receives certification for cardiac rehabilitation

The Cardiovascular Department of Phelps Hospital has again received certification for its cardiac rehabilitation program from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

AACVPR-certified programs are recognized as leaders in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation because they offer the most advanced practices available. This is the second time the program has received this certification, which is valid for three years.

Cardiovascular rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with cardiac problems improve their cardiovascular health and their quality of life. The programs include medically supervised exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families.

2017 Limits for HSA Contributions

The 2017 limits on contribution and out-of-pocket spending amounts for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and for the High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) were set again this year by the IRS and only the individual contribution limit was increased. The rates reflect the cost-of-living adjustment and rounding rules of Internal Revenue Code Section 223.

* Catch-up contributions can be made any time during the year in which the HSA participant turns 55. ** Unlike other limits, the HSA catch-up contribution amount is not indexed; any increase would require statutory change.

An HSA is always in an individual’s name. There are no joint HSAs, even when the HSA is linked to a family coverage HDHP and subject to the higher family coverage contribution limit. Employer sponsored plans include an “employee with spouse” and “employee with child(ren)” tier in addition to single employee and family coverage. An “employee with child(ren)” such as an eligible employee and her dependent child, would fall under the HSA family coverage limits.

HSA penalties for nonqualified expenses

The penalty for using HSA funds for nonqualified medical expenses for those under the age of 65 (unless totally and permanently disabled) is 20 percent of the funds used for nonqualified expenses. Funds spent for nonqualified purposes also are also subject to income tax.

HSAs and coverage of adult children under age 26

While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) allows parents to add their adult children (up to age 26) to their health plans, the IRS has not changed its definition of a dependent for health savings accounts. This means that an employee whose 24-year-old child is covered on their HAS qualified high-deductible health plan is not eligible to use HSA funds to pay for medical bills for that 24-year-old. If account holders can't claim a child as a dependent on their tax returns, then they can't spend HSA dollars on services provided to that child.

According to the IRS definition, a dependent is a qualifying child (son, daughter, stepchild, sibling or stepsibling, or any descendant of these) who: • • • •

Has same principal place of abode as the employee for more than one-half of the taxable year.

Has not provided over one-half of their own support during the taxable year.

Is not yet age 19 (or not yet age 24 if a student) at the end of the tax year.

Is permanently and totally disabled.

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act HSA Limits are Higher

A frequent source of confusion are the two sets of limits on out-of-pocket expenses that employers should keep in mind.

Out-of-pocket limits under the PPACA are higher than the IRS’s out-of-pocket limits on HSA-qualified HDHPs. This is because the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) uses a premium-adjustment percentage method based on a projection of annual increases in per enrollee employer-sponsored insurance premiums to modify the maximum out-of-pocket limit for PPACA compliant plans while the IRS uses the consumer price index to adjust its out-of-pocket limit for HSA eligible HDHPs. The 2017 PPACA out-of-pocket limits are $7,150 for individuals and $14,300 for families.
