Laura Bell Bundy’s Story Congenital Heart Disease Survivor, Age 34, New York, NY Laura Bell Bundy is a country music recording artist and star of Broadway, television and film. She also has congenital heart disease and is a national volunteer for the American’ Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement. As a part of the 2014-15 Go Red For Women “Real Women” national volunteers, Laura Bell Bundy is also an advocate for the cause.

Ever since Laura Bell Bundy was 6 weeks old, she has been waiting for medical science to catch up. That’s how old she was when doctors discovered she has a congenital heart defect called Ventricular Septal Defect. It is one that many Americans have – a hole in the heart.

Laura Bell has learned that there are different kinds of holes and different ways of repairing them. For her specific case, doctors must cut open her chest and crack open the rib cage to get to her heart. That is why she has been waiting.

“I know that one day medical research is going to figure out a better, easier way to fix this all-too-common problem. I still believe that,” she says. “However, I’m 33 now and I don’t think I can wait much longer.”

While waiting for technology to catch up, there have been some scares along the way. Laura Bell’s parents raised her to believe anything was possible, so she has tried to live like she was uncompromised. This included running competitively in high school.

Laura Bell recalls “I was running cross country in high school on a particularly hot day, and I literally passed out at the finish line. Everything turned out okay, but the experience taught me to be wary of my limits. I’m proud to say that I later finished seventh in the state of Kentucky in the 400 meters.”

“I’m also proud to say that my heart condition hasn’t stunted my career. I’ve been able to sing and dance in high-intensity Broadway plays,” she exclaims.

“My overall fitness and health has probably helped my body withstand some of the effects of my condition.”

Laura Bell clarifies, “But this isn’t about just me and my case. I think of all the others who could benefit from better detection, monitoring, treatment, repair and rehabilitation.”

“I especially think of my grandmother – my dad’s mom. She died of a heart condition nobody knew that she had when she was 69 years old,” she says.

Laura Bell emphasizes that medical research has come a long way in the last 30 years. She adds, “But we also know there is a long way still to go. I urge you to join the Go Red For Women movement and help us get there as quickly as possible.”

Stroke Survivor: Monica Garrigan of Yorktown Heights Monica Garrigan of Yorktown Heights resembles many working moms.

She was busy, tired, running around with errands, work and children’s school and sports activities. Last June, when she experienced seemingly benign symptoms like fatigue, vision problems and ear tinnitus, she passed them off as the by-product of a too-busy life.

When two red flag symptoms – arm weakness and memory loss – caused her to have a fender bender while she was driving to work, her friend, an eye doctor, told her to get to the hospital right away because she was probably having a stroke.

Her friend was right. A CAT-scan showed she’d had a stroke. Lucky for the 51-year old Garrigan, she got help immediately when symptoms occurred.

But far too many women don’t recognize the signs or don’t take action quickly enough to avoid permanent disability, like paralysis and memory loss, or even death.

Phelps Cuts Ribbon on New SurgiCenter Imagine a brand new operating suite with five spacious, state-of-the-art operating rooms, complete with the latest surgical equipment and comfortable private patient rooms – many with a scenic Hudson River view. That’s the latest development at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, where a 20,163-square-foot surgical suite has just opened on the third floor of the 755 Medical Services Building.

“Many Phelps surgeons and staff members were consulted about the design and capabilities of the new facility,” said Richard Sinni, of Irvington, chairman of the hospital’s board, at a recent ribbon-cutting for the SurgiCenter. “The end result reflects the best ideas for creating an optimal environment for patients, clinical staff and changing technology.”

Called the Phelps SurgiCenter, the facility was designed for both inpatient and outpatient surgery. It is connected to the main hospital by a 200-foot-long enclosed bridge, permitting quick access to the full capabilities of the hospital and medical subspecialists. Proximity to the hospital ensures a level of safety that is not available at free-standing surgery centers.

“Freestanding surgery centers do not routinely have cardiologists, pulmonologists and internists standing nearby,” explains Richard Peress, MD, spine surgery

specialist and Director of Surgery. “While patients who are seriously ill or need complex surgery cannot be treated at a freestanding surgery center, they can be safely cared for in the SurgiCenter.”

The operating rooms have state-of-the-art technology suspended from booms that can be easily moved above the operating tables for exact positioning. There is a video system connected to a central computer station that can transmit CAT scan, MRI, fluoroscopic or X-ray images to any of the monitors in the ORs. A patient’s vital signs and real-time surgical images are also displayed, ensuring that everyone involved in the course of surgery is fully apprised of its progress.

The new SurgiCenter enables family members and friends of surgical patients to be informed about the patient’s status. Real-time updates on a patient’s location and progress throughout the surgical process are displayed on a digital screen in the waiting room.

Phelps is one of only a few hospitals in New York State to have this system. Text message updates can also be provided to individuals on the hospital campus – or anywhere in the world. In addition, the system has a display for the surgical team that posts operating room schedules, patient status and “flags” regarding a patient’s special circumstances.

“What we have created is a surgical facility that is not only designed for tomorrow’s technology, but provides patients with unsurpassed comfort and privacy,” said Daniel Blum, President of Phelps. Unlike the patient rooms at freestanding surgery centers, which are usually separated simply by curtains, the SurgiCenter features 17 rooms with solid walls and sliding glass doors. Soft, low lighting illuminates the patient’s bed, with brighter spot lighting for visitors to read or use electronic devices.

The décor in the SurgiCenter is a combination of contemporary and traditional, creating an overall timeless, elegant look. The space was designed to be very welcoming, comforting and warm. It includes a stone accent wall in the reception area, wall coverings in natural tones, and dark wood doors and trim throughout.

From an environmental standpoint, steps were taken to incorporate “green” features in the facility. Lighting fixtures are highly energy efficient. Some of the construction materials have recycled content, including quartz countertops that are certified for indoor air quality. An environmentally friendly waste disposal system fully cleanses surgical waste water, uses reusable plastic containers and does not contribute to landfill.

Designed by HCP Architects, the SurgiCenter was constructed by BBL Construction Services, which also built the Phelps Medical Services Building in 2007.

2015 Higher Limits for HSA Contributions

The 2015 limits on contribution and out-of-pocket spending amounts for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and for the High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) were increased again this year by the IRS. The IRS provided the inflation-adjusted HSA contribution, HDHP minimum deductible and out-of-pocket limits for 2015. The higher rates reflect the cost-of-living adjustment and rounding rules of Internal Revenue Code section 223.

A comparison of the 2014 and 2015 limits is shown below:

Here are some important points regarding HSAs and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: HSA penalties for nonqualified expenses Effective Jan. 1, 2011, the penalty for using HSA funds for nonqualified medical expenses for those under the age of 65 (unless totally and permanently disabled) increased from 10 percent to 20 percent of the funds used for nonqualified expenses. Funds spent for nonqualified purposes also are subject to income tax.

HSAs and coverage of adult children under age 26 While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) allows parents to add their adult children (up to age 26) to their health plans, the IRS has not changed its definition of a dependent for health savings accounts. This means that an employee whose 24-year-old child is covered on their HSA-qualified high-deductible health plan is not eligible to use HSA funds to pay for medical bills for that 24-year-old.

If account holders can't claim a child as a dependent on their tax returns, then they can't spend HSA dollars on services provided to that child. According to the IRS definition, a dependent is a qualifying child who: • Has same principal place of abode as the covered employee for more than one-half of the taxable year.

• Has not provided over one-half of their own support during the taxable year.

• Is not yet age 19 (or not yet age 24 if a student) at the end of the tax year • Is permanently and totally disabled.

So…How’s that New Year’s resolution going?

Save the date: February 7th. That’s the day of the dreaded fitness fall off.

At least, according to Gold’s Gym: They went through three years of gym member check-ins at locations across America, and found that 38 days after the ball drops is when people start to give up on their New Year’s resolutions. We have a few suggestions to stay on track this year: Make exercise work for you: It’s all about finding the enjoyment in it. Find an exercise that meshes with your personality. Don’t assume that you need to become a long distance runner to get fit. If you can’t stand running, then figure out what you do enjoy. Really look at your personality, and be realistic about what goes along with it.

It’s all about problem solving: Where diet and exercise are concerned, don’t just assume that you’ll fall into new patterns without encountering roadblocks. We ask: How come in every other portion of your life, you solve problems and map it out? But when it comes to dieting and nutrition, you immediately throw in the towel when it doesn’t work? You can do it.

Watch your mouth: Certain words can trigger a resolution lapse. The term “deserve” is one prime example: You start saying, ‘I deserve to go to happy hour and eat fried Snickers and drink martinis. If you find yourself reinforcing good behavior with indulgences—too many glasses of wine, too few weekly workouts—because you “deserve them” catch yourself before you derail.

Fuel yourself: The worst food decisions happen when you’re starving. Carrying nutritious snacks to prevent the kinds of poor nutritional choices that can accompany growling hunger.

And before you nosh, consider what you’re about to eat: People don’t think about whether a food is going to make them sleepy, really full, or crave something else.

For a sugar-free Valentine’s Day… If your loved one has diabetes, go easy on the Valentine's Day candy, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists advises.

For the 25.8 million adults in the United States with diabetes, Valentine's Day sweets could cause an unhealthy spike in blood sugar levels, according to the association.

Rather than loading up on sweets, the group's physicians recommend a small package of handmade truffles for diabetics who can safely work a bit of sugar into their diet. Chocolate, they said, is metabolized more slowly than other types of candy and won't increase blood sugar levels as quickly.

Also, by learning about diabetes and thinking ahead, there are other ways you can show your love for someone with diabetes on Valentine's Day, including: Opt for low-carb candy: Candy makers have low-carbohydrate versions of popular Valentine's Day gifts. Still, it's a good idea to limit portion sizes of these candies. Although many are labeled "sugar-free," they have calories that affect blood sugar levels differently.

Be mindful of: hidden carbs: Aside from sugar, ingredients that can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly include potatoes, white rice and white flour. Just because a baked good is made with a sugar substitute doesn't mean it's an appropriate gift. Desserts that contain white flour, dried fruit, honey, corn syrup and agave nectar are not a good choice for people with diabetes.

Be creative and cook: Instead of offering a box of candy, one way you can show your love to a person who has diabetes is to prepare a home-cooked meal. This way you can offer them a meal that is sure to meet their dietary restrictions.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.
