Donation to Spaulding Rehabilitation Network establishes a new Adaptive Hockey Program in the region The sounds of skates rocketing on the ice and pucks smacking into sticks is a common thread at energetic community rinks throughout New England. For people with disabilities the boards of hockey rinks have often represented barriers to participation. However a new program, The Dr. Bernard R. and Edna M. Sears Adaptive Hockey Program at Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers aims to make the sounds of a hockey sled a common occurrence throughout the Boston Area.

The Dr. Bernard R. and Edna M. Sears Adaptive Hockey Program was created through a generous donation by Edna Sears of Boston.

This donation allows the clinical and adaptive sports experts at Spaulding to engage the community with disabilities by introducing the sport of sled hockey for all age levels and abilities.

“From the time I was at Harvard watching games, the thrill and joy that the sport of hockey can bring to participants, families and fans is unmatched. Contributing to such a worthy organization as Spaulding that will enable people of all abilities to discover this wonderful sport while enhancing their quality of life is something I am very proud of,” said Edna Sears.

The program will begin in early December and run through April by hosting practices and skills sessions. The eventual goal is to foster a wide community of active players to participate in area leagues through The Mass Sled Hockey Initiative, a collaboration of Mass Hockey, Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers, Northeast Passage, Boston Shamrocks, Boston Junior Bruins, Minuteman Flames, the New England Sports Center and the DCR Universal Access Program.

many individuals who gave up their dream of suiting up and playing on the ice again because of an injury as well as introduce entirely new people to the sport,” said Dr. David Crandell, Medical Director of Spaulding Adaptive Sports Program and Team Physician for the US National Amputee Hockey Team.

“We see in our patient populations that engaging in sports they love or discovering new activities creates the confidence to improve their quality of life in all areas in addition to the

positive physical fitness aspects sports can provide.”

The goal of the Dr. Bernard R. and Edna M. Sears Adaptive Hockey Program is to grow the participation of disabled hockey (recreational, league and elite) in the Boston Metro area and Eastern Massachusetts for individuals of all abilities. Sessions throughout the winter are currently being scheduled with space still available. “Sweet Readers” comes to The Greens at Greenwich

There’s something magical that happens when these young people pair with our residents. For them, it’s like being with a grandparent (or great grandparent) who loves you and needs you. For the residents, it brings to life the warmth and sweetness of unconditional love and the delight of being close to a caring, admiring youngster.”

The idea for the program was initiated by Sophie Young in 2010, shortly after her grandmother, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, moved a few blocks away from her in Manhattan. Sophie started reading books and poetry to her grandmother in a new, interactive way and when Sophie’s mother Karen Young saw how her daughter and mother responded, Karen realized this could be helpful to others who felt isolated by the disease.

Together Karen and Sophie, with help from geriatricians, artists, art educators and poets, and eight founding Sweet Readers from Sophie’s school, developed a training program and 6session core curriculum and launched Sweet Readers in 2011. Sweet Readers has expanded to include 12 communities in six cities with nearly 800 Sweet Readers engaging with over 350 elders in need.

Its success demonstrates how essential it is to give those with severe memory loss something to look forward to, someone to be close to, and nothing could be better than the openness and sincerity of a young person.

Eli, an eleven year- old student at Eagle Hill School in Greenwich and Audrey, a 71 year-old who lives at The Greens at Greenwich, have become good friends after just a few visits. Seeing them together, engrossed in looking at Audrey’s family photograph album or working together making a diorama, is a heartwarming sight, but it’s actually much more than that. Audrey lives at The Greens because it’s dedicated to improving the lives of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. She misses her sons who live in the mid- west, but Eli has changed all that. “When will he be back?” she often asks, and when he arrives, her eyes light up, she’s alert and excited. This is the transformation that the Sweet Readers program is bringing to The Greens at Greenwich.

The visit with Audrey changes Eli, too. His reactions and feelings about people living with dementia are different than they used to be.

He has learned to accept and understand the way older people look and sound and is not intimidated or uncomfortable being with them and those with memory issues.

“Sweet Readers is a remarkable intergenerational program,” says Maria Scaros- Mercado, The Greens Executive Director. “We are the only residence in Greenwich to have it.

“The wonderful thing about this particular intergenerational activity is that it utilizes the creative arts, and that in itself is a very effective way to stimulate memory, encourage participation and give residents a true feeling of achievement.

When creativity is shared with an attentive, affectionate youngster, it’s better than any conventional approach to dementia,” says Ms. Scaros-Mercado.

Students from Eagle Hill and Brunswick Schools in Greenwich get a great deal out of this program, their teachers say. “They definitely have a more compassionate, accepting and admiring response to aging and those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. With Sweet Readers they acquire empathy and personal people skills that will reinforce their lives and their future relationships.”

The Mercy Community welcomes two new Managers Andresen and Cyphers join the team at Saint Mary Home The Mercy Community, West Hartford’s premier continuing care retirement community, is pleased to welcome Beth Andresen, MSW as the Director of Hospitality/Admissions; and Patricia Cyphers as the Director of The Frances Warde Towers Apartments at Saint Mary Home, part of The Mercy Community.

Saint Mary Home provides skilled nursing, rehabilitation therapies, palliative, and pulmonary care to its senior residents. The facility also offers adult day services, as well as a comprehensive scope of services for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.

Ms. Andresen comes to The Mercy Community with more than 20 years of experience in health care, including 17 years spent in senior health care here in Connecticut.

She previously served as Director of Admissions at Riverside Health Care in East Hartford and Manchester Manor in Manchester, CT. Andresen is a graduate of Cornell University, and earned her master’s degree in Social Work from Boston University. She currently lives in Vernon, CT. “Beth’s experience and welcoming demeanor will assist our residents, clients, and their families as they explore and eventually choose Saint Mary Home. I am delighted to add her to our professional team,” said Administrator of Saint Mary Home, Eric Dana.

Mercy is also pleased to have Patricia Cyphers join the team as the new Director of The Frances Warde Towers Apartments at Saint Mary Home. She will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the 97-unit residential care home, empowering residents to reach their fullest potential as individuals and as a community, and providing educational, wellness and social programming.

Prior to her appointment at The Mercy Community, Ms. Cyphers served as Resident Service Coordinator at the Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporation in Bristol, CT and as Director of Residential Services for Curtis Home’s Residential Care Home in Meriden, CT. She holds a BS degree in Psychology from Albertus Magnus College. She currently lives in Wallingford, CT. “I am delighted that Patricia Cyphers will lead our efforts within The Frances Warde Towers Apartments, which is such a critical com-

ponent of The Mercy Community’s Mission and ministry,” said Executive Director of Residential Care Services for Saint Mary Home, Philip Murray. “She brings 18 years of experience working with residents, clients, families, social workers, case managers and other community resources. Her skills and knowledge will be assets to all who live and work in the Towers,” added Murray.

Emergency Medical Associates (EMA) has experienced another year of growth in 2014, signing three new contracts and increasing its number of annual emergency department patient visits by 258,000 visits.

In 2014, Emergency Medical Associates began providing emergency department management services to Newark (N.J.) Beth Israel Medical Center, New York Hospital Queens, and The Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, Pa. Due to this growth, EMA now staffs and manages 30 emergency departments in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. This growth has increased the company’s annual number of ED patient visits to more than 1.5 million.

Additionally, the company’s hospitalist medicine division, Inpatient Medical Associates, added three new contracts and nearly 50,000 inpatient visits in 2014, while its urgent care staffing and management division

expects to treat more than 58,000 patients by year’s end.

The company’s strategic, measured growth was recognized in October when Emergency Medical Associates’ chief financial officer Janice Klostermeier, CPA, FACHE, MHA, received the CFO of the Year Award for Best Growth Manager from NJ Biz magazine.

Sterile Processing Certification for a More Certain Future Patient safety and infection prevention have always been priorities for healthcare providers. However, because of today’s disease reporting requirements, high-profile outbreaks, increased transparency, and liability for contributing to infection rates, the importance of ensuring best practices for sterile processing is more vital than ever.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 25 patients will contract a preventable healthcareassociated infection (HAI) during their hospital stay—a surprisingly high number. The good news is that many of these infections can be prevented with a dependable sterile processing program, one that includes strict compliance with evidence-based practices and the manufacturer’s most current guidelines, backed by C-suite advocacy for reducing HAIs. So what localized efforts can we as healthcare providers use to ensure that we’re delivering the highest quality care to our patients? Even hospitals that have the best sterile processing practices face challenges, such as high surgery volume, undertrained staff, and insufficient inventory/sterile processing capacity. What’s more, the current lack of standardization is a large contributor to those challenges because it complicates existing processes and the way employees are expected to function as part of a cohesive department.

As of January 1, New Jersey and New York require certification of central sterile staff, and other states are following that lead. Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania are already looking to put similar legislation into effect. Certification ensures that staff is fully apprised of the latest infection control techniques for disease prevention, have a fundamental knowledge of microbiology, and understand the importance of their role in supporting clinical counterparts, such as the OR, endoscopy centers, diagnostic radiology centers, and ambulatory surgery facilities.

Sterile processing directly impacts patient safety as well as physician satisfaction, and thus greatly affects facility-wide costs. All departments should be engaged and expected to comply with standardized processes. Addressing wasteful, inefficient, unsafe workflow and sterilization processes can result in meaningful returns both inside and outside of the operating suite. The likelihood of reliable compliance with set infection prevention procedures increases when processes are clear, practical, and adequately supervised, with necessary supplies readily available. Arming our sterile processing workforce with the right knowledge and the right tools is our best defense against HAIs and, therefore, reimbursement penalties.

Older adults recreate artists’ masterpieces at Cedar Mountain Commons Claude Monet’s famous series of paintings depicting water lilies were recreated and interpreted by senior artists residing at Cedar Mountain Commons. Their artwork, which was based on the paintings of the great masters Edgar Degas, Grandma Moses, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian and Monet, as well as glass artist Dale Chihuly, was recently showcased in the second exhibit entitled “Masterpieces and Mimosas.”

The art program was launched in September 2013 by Debra Labbe, Cedar Mountain Commons activities director, who thought the endeavor would provide the opportunity for residents to expand their knowledge and express themselves.

“With Degas, the residents were able to release their inner feminism as they created ballerinas in tutus with cupcake papers and learned the art of pastel painting,” Labbe said.

They also created farm landscapes in the style of Grandma Moses who painted from the sky down and then added all the details. Copying Henri Matisse’s “painting with scissors” style, the artists cut and snipped shapes, which they then glued to canvases.

Two different classes were held for the interpretation of Claude Monet’s series of paintings of a Japanese bridge and water lilies, which were made using a collage technique with layers of tissue paper to simulate the rippling colors of water. The residents also learned about Dale Chihuly, an American glass artist who has works in The Bushnell and hundreds of other locations throughout the world. To recreate Chiculy’s “Macchias” color exploration, coffee filters, paint and spray starch were crafted into a sweeping wall installation.

“It’s something that I enjoy going to each month, both to learn about a new artist and to have fun trying to imitate their style. It’s not always easy but it’s fun trying,” said resident artist Emilie Kochanowski.

New to the gallery were Cedar Mountain Commons' staff canvases.

“Each department was given a canvas that was divided into a number of shapes, one for each employee of that department. Staff could fill the space with any design they liked. More than 60 staff members participated and eight beautiful 24 x 36-inch canvases were created, filled with birds, flowers, shapes, people, expressions and unique designs,” Labbe said.

“These now decorate the walls adjacent to the dining rooms.”

The reception also included musical entertainment by James Shanahan, hors d’ouevres and mimosas, and creative fruit and vegetable carvings made by chef Joe Chmura.

In preparation for the March exhibit, participants recently completed a canvas in homage to Keith Haring, graffiti-inspired American artist and activist.

Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut’s Friends of Hospice Committee dedicate Hospice Memorial Tree, Welcome New Chair

Friends of Hospice, a committee that works to support Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut through volunteerism and fundraising, recently unveiled a new memorial sculpture at Day Kimball Hospital. The Hospice Memorial Tree, located adjacent to the Hospice Family Suite, is decorated with 700 gleaming metal leaves where the names of those served by Hospice may be inscribed in memoriam. This is the third such sculpture the committee has commissioned over the last two decades.

“This is truly a community tree,” said Roger C. Franklin, new incoming chair of the committee. “This project took over a year to complete and would not have been possible without the support of so many. Today, we dedicate this tree to those patients whose end of life journey was guided by our hospice team, and we also take pride in all that our team has accomplished over the last 22 years.”

Franklin became involved with Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Connecticut when his own wife received hospice services in 2003. He replaces Barbara Elliot as chair of the Friends of Hospice Committee. Elliot has served the Committee for 12 years, the last five as chair. When Nurses Go Nocturnal Living in the opposite time frame as the rest of society makes night shift nursing a unique culture in itself. Room darkening shades and earplugs may be on our list of favorite things. On the other hand, we share a mutual dislike of Monday morning landscaping that seems to begin right when you are about to drift off to sleep. Whether you work the night shift once in a while, permanently, or in 8-hour shifts or 12-hour shifts, we all share in the night shift struggles.

Be Aware Studies show that the majority of night shift workers suffer from short sleep duration.

Falling asleep on the commute home is undoubtedly one of the most serious consequences resulting from a lack of sleep that can affect you and others sharing the roads. Lack of sleep has been known to cause a decline in performance and increase in errors. Sleep deprivation also reduces alertness and slows reaction time. Since the night shift throws off circadian rhythms, try not to schedule multiple night shifts in a row. If possible, try to prevent unnecessary sleepy driving by food shopping prior to a stretch of night shifts. Rather than driving to the gym, exercise in doors or walk the dog for fresh air. Finally, get a good day's sleep before making any major decisions.

Sleep Utopia Making a sleep oasis is vital for sleeping deeply during the day. Room darkeners, ear plugs, fans or white noise machines are a must. Use an alarm clock instead of relying on a cell phone.

Keep the room cool and don't skimp on a good mattress.

Self Care Remembering to care for yourself is the most important thing to keep in mind when bouncing back and forth between day and night shifts. Although you may be craving French Fries at 4 am, be good to your body! Try healthy shakes and decrease sugar consumption to avoid crashing.

Make sure to schedule social events on your days off to feel "normal." Maintain healthy eating habits and exercise as regularly as possible. By getting exercise outdoors, the exposure to sunlight can lighten moods and improve sleep quality.

Night shift is a unique "other world" experience. Without managers, extra ancillary staff and family members around, night nurses work autonomously to provide exceptional patient care. Bonds forged during night shift nursing are special because buddies are needed to survive the shift- whether to keep each other awake or to keep each other in great spirits. When the sun sets, these nurses let patient's loved ones sleep soundly at home knowing the patient is in good hands. The crazy hours may push nurses to the limits, but following these tips and tricks and remembering to care for ourselves makes for a rewarding career no matter what time of day.

The team’s healing rates, the most significant quality measure in their specialty, are greater than 92 percent. Patient satisfaction scores always average higher than 94 percent. Both are consistently above national averages.

It is no surprise that this team was also selected as MidState’s 2014 Team of the Year, a hospitalbased recognition program in which employees can nominate outstanding teams that exceed their customers’ expectations.

education & careers Day Kimball Healthcare’s Child Advocacy Program offers training to employees and community members with Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children prevention program According to recent numbers compiled by Connecticut's Child Advocacy Centers in 2013, Windham County has, by far, the highest incidence of child sexual abuse per capita in the state. Children who live, learn, grow and play in Windham County are at a higher risk for being sexually abused before they reach adulthood than children in other areas of the state. In fact, more than 3000 reports are placed annually to Department of Children and Families. Placing greater risk on these families is that in 2014 according to the Robert J. Wood Foundation County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 20 percent of adults in Windham County were without social/emotional support.

Last year to respond to the high risk and high incidence of abuse in Windham County, Day Kimball enhanced its child sexual abuse prevention efforts and began training all of its clinical teams and staff members that have direct responsibilities for caring for children in the Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children child abuse prevention program. Using

real stories and sometimes inviting survivors to share personal stories, the program focuses on The Five Steps to Protecting Our Children.

They include: 1. Learn the facts. 2.

Minimize opportunities. 3. Talk about it. 4. Recognize the signs. 5.

React responsibly. (Learn more at www.d2l.org.) To date, Kesselman, an authorized Stewards of Children facilitator, has trained 120 employees with the goal of 100 percent participation by the end of 2017.

Almost 300 additional people outside the Day Kimball organization have also been trained by working with community-based organizations. Pomfret Community School (PCS) has already hosted two sessions and trained more than 100 teachers, staff members and bus drivers. The Pomfret school serves 475 children, kindergarten through eighth grade.

“We feel very fortunate to have had Dr. Kesselman training Pomfret Community School employees on the warning signs of sexual abuse through her two recent workshops held for the entire PCS faculty and staff. With Dr. Kesselman’s support, we believe we are ahead of the curve as far as ensuring our employees are up-to-date and educated in identifying and responding to any issues of sexual abuse that may arise during the school year,” said Dr. Matt A. Bisceglia, PCS superintendent.

Bisceglia added that on June 11, 2014, Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed Erin’s Law, SB 203. This bill requires age-appropriate sexual abuse education in Connecticut. At this time, the State Department of Education is in the process of devel-

oping a curriculum that will be used throughout the state.

“Child abuse is an uncomfortable topic to address. I applaud those who are willing to come forward, look at what’s happening in our community, and then feel empowered and inspired to make a difference. Abuse is something that’s passed down generation to generation, so every time we prevent another incident we stop the cycle for that family. Darkness to Light Steward’s of Children gives adults the questions to ask other adults to keep children in the community safe. By doing this, we send a clear message that we are a child friendly community and we will minimize opportunities for abusers to have access to our children.” said Kesselman.

The Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children child abuse prevention program is one component of The NEST, a community collaborative to provide Northeast Connecticut children and families the support needed to create and sustain healthy and safe family environments. Hospital for Special Care offers Innovative Medically-supervised Smoking Cessation Counseling Patients have the opportunity to be paired with a physician and a tobacco treatment specialist Hospital for Special Care (HSC) is now offering medically-supervised smoking cessation counseling sessions with both a medical doctor and a tobacco-treatment specialist.

A pulmonologist will exam and meet with each patient prior to the start of the cessation counseling sessions to provide a baseline assessment of lung health and assess the need for mediation. A tobaccotreatment specialist then will assess and guide the patient to formulate a quit plan. Both group and individual sessions are available and most are covered by insurance.

“Tobacco addiction is a large burden on healthcare and is responsible for a significant amount of disease and death,” said Paul J. Scalise, M.D., chief clinical officer, sr. vice president of medical affairs, Hospital for Special Care.

“This program is unique in that it pairs a practicing physician with a tobacco treatment specialist, something that we don’t see that often.”

Stress Management Don’t Lets Stress Take a Toll on Your Health Everyone feels stress in different ways and reacts to it in different ways. How much stress you experience and how you react to it can lead to a wide variety of health problems — and that’s why it’s critical to know what you can do about it.

What's the link between chronic stress and heart disease?

More research is needed to determine how stress contributes to heart disease — the leading killer of Americans. But stress may affect behaviors and factors that increase heart disease risk: high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, smoking, physical inactivity and overeating. Some people may choose to drink too much alcohol or smoke cigarettes to “manage” their chronic stress, however these habits can increase blood pressure and may damage artery walls.

And your body's response to stress may be a headache, back strain, or stomach pains. Stress can also zap your energy, wreak havoc on your sleep and make you feel cranky, forgetful and out of control.

Positive Self-Talk Self-talk is one way to deal with stress. We all talk to ourselves; sometimes we talk out loud but usually we keep selftalk in our heads. Self-talk can be positive ("I can do this" or "Things will work out" or “I’ll do the best I can.”) or negative ("I'll never get well" or "I'm so stupid" or “Everything is going wrong.”).

Negative self-talk increases stress. Positive self-talk helps you calm down and control stress. With practice, you can learn to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. To help you feel better, practice positive self-talk every day — in the car, at your desk, before you go to bed or whenever you notice negative thoughts.

Try These Emergency Stress Stoppers There are many stressful situations — at work, at home, on the road and in public places. We may feel stress because of poor communication, too much work and everyday hassles like standing in line. Emergency stress stoppers help you deal with stress on the spot.

Try these emergency stress stoppers. You may need different stress stoppers for different situations and sometimes it helps to combine them.

• Count to 10 before you speak.

• Take three to five deep breaths.

• Walk away from the stressful situation, and say you'll handle it later.

• Go for a walk.

• Don't be afraid to say "I'm sorry" if you make a mistake.

• Set your watch five to 10 minutes ahead to avoid the being late.

• Break down big problems into smaller parts. For example, answer one letter or phone call per day, instead of dealing with everything at once.

• Drive in the slow lane or avoid busy roads to help you stay calm while driving.

Does chronic stress cause high blood pressure?

Chronic stress has not been shown to directly cause high blood pressure, but it can lead to unhealthy lifestyle choices that are associated with high blood pressure. While the exact causes of high blood pressure are unknown, contributing factors include being overweight, eating too much sodium (salt), lack of physical activity and drinking too much alcohol. Chronic stress can take a physical toll on you. It can weaken your immune system and cause uncomfortable physical symptoms like headache and stomach problems.

How do I know if I need a stress management class?

Stress management classes can help you learn to handle your stress, especially if you have a "Type A" personality (constantly rushing, angry, hostile or competitive) or if your stress is nonstop.

Stress management classes can be found at community colleges, rehab programs, in hospitals or by calling a therapist in your community. Classes normally last for 10 to 12 weeks and offer many techniques to help you.

Successor to Milford Regional Medical Center's President and CEO announced Milford Regional Medical Center's Board of Trustees has selected Edward J. Kelly as the corporation's president and CEO effective January 1, 2016.

Currently, Kelly is president of Milford Regional. He will succeed CEO Francis M. Saba, who has served as both president and/or CEO at Milford Regional since 1990. The president and CEO positions will be combined when Kelly assumes the position in 2016.

“It is with great pleasure that the board announces our unanimous decision to choose Ed Kelly as successor to Frank Saba in the important role as Milford Regional's president and CEO,” says John Burns, chairman of Milford Regional's board of trustees.

“Milford Regional has had the good fortune of cultivating strong leadership that ensures Milford Regional's continued stature as one of the region's premier healthcare systems. Having worked closely together for over 20 years, Frank and Ed share the same mission and vision for the hospital as well as the communities it serves. We are confident that Ed will build upon the outstanding foundation set by Frank during his remarkable tenure at Milford Regional.”

Kelly’s career in healthcare, which spans more than 30 years, has included senior level positions at MetroWest Medical Center; Leonard Morse Hospital; as well as managerial positions at Leonard Morse; St. Elizabeth's Hospital; and Beth Israel Hospital. He came to Milford Regional in 1993 as chief financial officer and was promoted to executive vice president in 1998. Ten years later, Kelly was named president of Milford Regional.

He directs and manages all day to day operations of the hospital and is currently overseeing the new, $54 million building project (which will include a new emergency department, intensive care unit and private patient rooms) slated to open in the fall of 2015.

During his tenure at Milford Regional, Kelly played a key role in the development of Tri-County Medical Associates (the Medical Center’s affiliated physician practice group); the merger with the Visiting Nurse Association of the Greater Milford/Northbridge Area; and the renovation and construction of numerous projects including the new Cancer Center with Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center; the Patient Care Center; and the cardiac catheterization lab.

“I look forward to working with Ed over the next year to ensure a seamless transition in leadership,” says Milford Regional CEO Frank Saba. “Our success at Milford Regional has come from great physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers, a very supportive community, and a management structure that encourages teamwork that fosters the growth and development of the individual members of the team.
