Great (and new) ways to celebrate Thanksgiving with your family Highlights of Thanksgiving Day usually include watching the parade, the games, eating turkey, eating more turkey, before that snooze on the couch after your company departs.

However, Turkey Day isn’t just about the entertainment and heaping plates of food. Perhaps, this year, you will start a new tradition that brings out the importance and symbolism of the holiday.

What do we have in mind?

Begin by asking yourself what Thanksgiving means to you. Is it about faith? Family? Giving back to the community? Use these ideals into to shape your new tradition in a fun, creative way.

Donate to charity Thanksgiving is also a great time to sort through the kids’ toys and clothing and donate what they no longer need to a local homeless shelter, preschool, church or nursery. Christmas is just around the corner, so you’re going to need some extra room anyway!

Construct a family tablecloth Have each person write their signature, the date and what they are thankful for on a plain white tablecloth before the meal begins. Use the same tablecloth each year and enjoy reading the old memories before adding new ones.

Volunteer Start a new family tradition by giving back to the community.

Check with your local community center or homeless shelter to see if they serve a Thanksgiving dinner. If so, volunteer as a family to work in the center’s kitchen for the day.

Design a family cookbook Type your favorite family Thanksgiving recipes into a word processing program on the computer and print out copies to give out to the extended family. Have kids decorate the recipes with drawings of each food, and then scan them onto the document.

Visit the elderly Do you live too far away from extended family to go home for Thanksgiving? Many local nursing homes or assisted living facilities run Adopt-a-Grandparent programs that strive to forge lasting relationships between seniors and members of the local community.

You and the kids can visit with an elderly resident who doesn’t have nearby family to celebrate the holidays with.

History Lesson Help the kids make pilgrim hats and read the story of the first Thanksgiving.

Gather items to decorate the table like the pilgrims may have had for the first Thanksgiving, like leaves, pine cones and a cornucopia filled with fruit. Talk together about how different life was for kids in 1621 compared to today.

If you have older kids, let them do some research on the Internet and share what they learned with guests before Thanksgiving dinner.

Tip 3: Find local resources Identify and call your local agency on aging. After you have assessed your loved one’s needs, area agencies on aging offer the most efficient way to find the resources you need.

Tip 4: Tap the Internet Surf the Web, or find someone to do it for you.

The Internet offers a wealth of information for caregivers.

If you don't have a computer, perhaps a relative or neighbor can help. ask them to print information from national caregiving Websites for you to read.

Are you a caregiver? According to the National Family Caregivers Association, there are about 50 million American caregivers.

But you may have taken on the role without even knowing it.

Experts have some helpful advice for caregivers: Identify yourself as a caregiver and get help to avoid caregiver burnout.

Tip 1: Take stock Assess your loved one’s situation. Take an inventory of his or her individual needs. Can he bathe, use the toilet, get dressed and eat? Can she get out of bed, climb stairs and take medications?

This will help you figure out where you or your loved one may need outside assistance.

A geriatrician, a physician who specializes in treating older people, can also help to evaluate your loved one's needs.

Tip 2: Ask for help Ask friends, family or your place of worship for assistance.

Three words are very important for caregivers: Ask for help. Keep a list of tasks, such as shoveling snow or sitting with your loved one, so you have an answer when people ask what they can do to help.

Enlisting friends, family or organizations is a sign of strength in a caregiver. Engage people to help you and try to take time for yourself. Self-care is not a luxury. It's your right as a human being.

Tip 5: Share your feelings Find a support group. The old saying “there’s strength in numbers” holds true for caregivers. Just talking to others who are in your shoes offers camaraderie and practical advice about caregiving. Check area hospitals or senior centers for support groups.

If caregiving becomes too much, consider the services of a geriatric care manager. These professionals are trained to help families who need help with caregiving issues, says the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers.

Above all, caregivers should be proactive and seek support.

Astorino announces Senior Law Day set for Oct. 29 Get free advice from experts in the legal, financial and geriatric care fields Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino has announced that attorneys, certified financial planners and geriatric care managers will offer 17 free workshops on elder law topics plus free, one-onone consultations at the 15th annual Senior Law Day on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at the County Center, 198 Central Ave., White Plains.

“Senior Law Day is one of the finest and most worthwhile events the county presents,” Astorino said.

“Knowledge is power, and the program will go a long way to help seniors be informed about their rights and finances. I commend the professionals who generously volunteer their knowledge and time every year to benefit Westchester residents.”

The program for seniors and their families will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and parking is free.

An estimated 3,000 seniors have learned about their rights since Senior Law Day began in 1999, said Commissioner Mae Carpenter of Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services.

The department presents Senior Law Day with the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services and the Ninth Judicial District of the New York State Office of Court Administration.

Workshops topics include wills vs. trusts, how to plan for at-home care with or without veterans benefits, guardianships, power of attorney, health care proxies, affordable housing options for seniors, preserving assets and how to avoid scams. There will also be workshops in Spanish on Medicare and estate planning.

For the first time, Senior Law Day will offer long-term care policy review by a long-term care insurance expert, who will also answer questions. Seniors are encouraged to bring a copy of their policy with them to the County Center.

They will also have the opportunity for free, 15-minute, one-on-one consultations with elder law attorneys, certified financial planners and geriatric care managers.

5 diabetes superfoods for patients on a budget Eating healthy doesn’t necessarily mean settling for less tasty foods or going over budget, especially for diabetes patients. A low-glycemic diet — high in fiber and protein — is recommended for most diabetics to help control blood sugar levels and weight. Following a diabetes diet will still allow diabetics to eat their favorite foods, yes, even those with the sweetest tooth.

Diabetics should ensure they consume foods that provide key nutrients — calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and E — to improve glycemic control and risk factors for coronary heart disease. This low-glycemic diet is not just for diabetics, but ideal for everyone, especially to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes for non-diabetics. A tasty, healthy eating plan — high in nutrients, low in fat, and moderate in calories — can be created by adding these five budget-friendly superfoods to any diabetes diet:

1. Beans Beans are considered to be the best source of dietary fiber as it slows digestion and keeps blood sugar levels from raising after a meal. Whether you prefer kidney, pinto, navy, or black beans, half a cup will provide you with about a third of your daily fiber requirement, says Harvard University Health Services.

These starchy vegetables are a great alternative to meat.

Tip: Buying canned beans can save time and end up costing you less.

Remember to drain and rinse these beans to reduce sodium intake.

Tip: Buy fruits and vegetables when they are in season. The quality of the fruit will not only be richer, but they will typically cost less. To purchase produce that is out of season, opt for canned and frozen fruits which can not only be cheaper, but also stay fresh longer.

3. Cinnamon To add some spice to your life, just sprinkle cinnamon on your foods to effectively lower your blood sugar levels. Cinnamon helps the body use insulin more effectively, allowing more glucose to enter cells. Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day has been shown to significantly reduce blood sugar levels, triglycerides, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and total cholesterol levels for those with type 2 diabetes, said Dr. Mercola, physician and surgeon, on his website.

Tip: Check to see if there is a discount grocery store in your area where you can save up to 40 percent in groceries.

4. Fat-Free Milk and Yogurt Milk and yogurt contain calcium that helps build strong bones and teeth, and they are also a good source of vitamin D. Diabetics who consume calciumrich foods, such as yogurt, may have an easier time losing weight, and are less likely to become insulin resistant, according to HealthCentral. A nonfat, plain yogurt for breakfast, or as a snack can be garnished with fresh fruit or low-fat granola.

Tip: Opt to buy store brands because they often taste the same and could even save you more than 50 percent.

5. Fish Fish is an excellent substitute for meats with high fat because they are a good source of protein. Fatty fish contains omega-3 fatty acids — unsaturated fats — that help keep the arteries cleaner. Typically, diabetics have high triglycerides and low levels of HDL — the “good” cholesterol, so opting for fatty fish can help improve your health. Salmon, mackerel, and tuna are among some of the excellent sources of omega-3s.

Tip: Visit a local grocer or fish market and look at the eyes and the gills to make sure there is no discoloration. It’s better to cook the fish immediately, rather than to put it in the freezer where the fish can get mushy.

Members of the Tri-Community Advanced Life Support System, which includes Croton Emergency Medical Services, the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department and the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps, stopped by Phelps Memorial Hospital Center recently to thank Phelps for the two new "fly cars" the hospital donated to the system.

A fly car is a rapid response Emergency Medical Services vehicle featuring advanced life support equipment that usually arrives at the scene of a medical emergency before the ambulance. According to Emil Nigro, MD, Director of Emergency Medicine at Phelps, the fly car, which is staffed with a paramedic and sometimes an EMT, “brings the ER to the patient.” A paramedic can provide lifesaving modalities on the scene of a medical emergency, including IV fluids, cardiac interventions and medication, and advanced airways (intubations). The speed of a fly car can significantly impact outcomes in life-threatening emergencies. “Many lives have been helped and quite a few saved because of fly cars,” says Dr. Nigro.

Years ago Phelps formed a partnership with the villages of Croton-On-Hudson and Briarcliff Manor and the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which staffs and manages the Tri-Community ALS system. Phelps has donated a total of six fly cars since 1995. The money donated for the vehicles comes from a special fund created to support ambulance services.

are you headed for a midlife crisis?

You’ve hit your forties and things are a little different now. What used to motivate you no longer does and you haven’t felt deep satisfaction in quite some time.

Perhaps it’s your job, a relationship, or just life in general. The challenges keep piling up and you rise to meet them, only to find a whole new set of them on the other side. You are frustrated and restless, and, you’ve got a pretty good dose of angst welling up inside.

Are you having a midlife crisis? Here are seven signs that you might be.

1. Persistent Dissatisfaction You have reached most of your goals thus far, but find yourself asking, “Is this as good as it gets?” So far the answers are not satisfactory and a sense of futility is settling in.

4. Shallow Commitments The thought of enduring the status quo is depressing, but you keep recommitting to it with less and less enthusiasm each time. You vow to stay the course because you have too much at stake. You are discouraged.

2. Inauthenticity You are wondering if you have not lost a part of yourself over the years, asking, “Is this really who I am?

What happened to that person I used to be? I always thought it would be different; at least by now?” You know that you are not being true to yourself.

5. Relational Tension You find yourself blaming the others around you for the way you feel: your spouse, your kids, your parents, your boss or your peers. You are wondering if life would not be easier and happier without the people who keep “holding you back.”

7. Recapturing Youth In order to feel alive, visible, or significant again, you revert to what worked for you in your youth. Perhaps it’s a younger-looking wardrobe, a cool (or cute) new car, physical improvements (real and artificial), or risky behaviour.

3. Insignificance You accomplish a lot of things, but wonder, “Do I really make a difference?” You often find yourself dreaming about something more, but feel life is passing you by, and it doesn’t reach back to make sure you’re along for the ride.

6. Leaking You are bored to tears. You are doing and saying things that are out of character for you in order to feel a little excitement, even if they are not helpful. You are no longer able to contain your frustration and moral & ethical boundaries are becoming blurry.

If you identified with several of the warning signs, be careful. You are in the danger zone. Identification with several items indicates that you are likely in a transition, an in-between time in your personal development.

They are often challenging and careful decisions must be made to navigate them well.

No family is perfect and there is often conflict among even the happiest groups. Large holiday gatherings are especially prone to arguments, raised voices and drama.

However, there are some ways to keep the fighting to a minimum…really.

Know your triggers Before you head to Thanksgiving dinner, think about what might get you riled up and try to keep your anger at bay.

Sometimes, someone might choose to bring up a ‘dumb’ thing you have done in the past.

Sometimes it's just better to admit that it was dumb and then smile. If a relative continues with criticism, redirect. You can do this by acknowledging the situation and then suggesting an alternate conversation topic.

Keep things neutral Avoid prickly topics around the dinner table by preparing more neutral topics ahead of time, such as conversing about movies you've seen, books you've read or experiences that you would like to share.

This will help offset potential contentious conversations.

Try to always be ready with a topic that everyone can weigh in on without offending someone else around the table.

Don’t expect perfection Be more concerned with connecting with people than if the food turns out perfectly.

It's not always easy for a large family to get together and all get along, but by preparing ahead of time, focusing on the positive and steering clear of hot-button topics you can ensure a relatively calm Thanksgiving dinner.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.
