Healthcare News - Westchester

After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 1241 Mamaroneck Ave. right here in White Plains, NY who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

Green Holiday S

TIPS TO

YOUR

1 2

EASON

Choose a real Christmas tree over an artificial one There is no doubt that a real Christmas tree is better for the environment than an artificial one. Artificial trees have heavy carbon footprints. Most of the trees are manufactured in Asia and will require a lot of energy for transport to European or American stores. The trees are made of metal, plastic and materials that are not biodegradable. Manufacturing the trees is also heavy on the environment and releases toxic chemicals into the atmosphere. Go for compostable Christmas decorations Try to avoid plastic or non-recyclable decorations at all costs. They can’t be recycled and there are much better ways to give your home a Christmas feeling. House decorations and decorations for the Christmas tree can be made from organic material. Why not try tree branches, pine cones or leaves? And throw some beautiful Christmas flowers and some mistletoe in.

3

Give eco-friendly gifts or do some good while giving This year, instead of going for the carbon loaded gifts shops are already piling up with, consider going for something completely different. Many gifts don’t require any carbon emissions or manufacturing like the sponsoring of animals, donations to environmental or other non-profit organizations, planting a tree and much more. If you prefer to go for ‘real’ gifts you could consider giving away activities. IOU’s for a day in the park, a hiking get-away or any other (eco-friendly) activity you would like others to enjoy are a great alternative and gift.

Top Pediatric Dentist in Westchester 5 years and counting!

4

Consider alternatives for Christmas cards Millions of trees worldwide are cut down every year just to provide us with Christmas cards. There are green alternatives that make a big difference. One option is to send recycled Christmas cards, or to go entirely electronic and send e-cards instead. Many Christmas cards support non-profit organizations or causes. If you can’t do without the traditional cards, why not do some good at the same time and offset your paper use by planting a tree?

5

Reduce, reuse and recycle Christmas dinner Reduce/ Don’t make too much food; it will end up in the waste bin anyway. Try to be conscious about the food you will be serving. An organic turkey is a good option, as are organic products from farmers’ markets. Reuse/ Don’t use plastic dishes or paper napkins, here again they will only end up in the waste bin and they are not biodegradable. Instead, go for the real deal. Grandmother’s dishes, wine glasses and fabric napkins. After dinner try to stack as much as possible in the dishwasher and go for an eco-friendly program. Recycle/ After your Christmas dinner compost your food waste and recycle any other waste (wine bottles, soda cans…) appropriately.

Tips for beating the winter blues As the days get shorter and winter closes in (sigh!), many people feel like hibernating. We start sleeping more, eating more and avoiding social contact. The effects can be particularly oppressive for people with depression, many of whom feel escalating dread at the end of daylight saving time. Here are Healthcare News’ eight ways to avoid the winter blues. 1. Start a new activity or take a class on something you've always wanted to do. You are less likely to fall prey to depression when occupied by things that excite you. A classroom environment allows you to focus on your hobby without feeling obliged to talk much. 2. Join the choir or a singing group. One Swedish study of more than 12,000 people found that singing in a choir seemed to promote longevity as well as boost health and mood. 3. Take a sauna. Remind your body what those hot summer days really feel like, and visualize their return. Many people with SAD report feeling better if they stay warm. 4. Monitor your energy levels. When your energy appears to be waning, turn to light exercise, especially if you can get outdoors. Even a brisk 10-minute walk in the sunshine will elevate endorphin levels. 5. Sleep well, but less. Craving sleep is a symptom of SAD, but research shows that restricting excessive sleep can help boost mood and energy levels. Save sleeping in for one day a week. You may find waking up easier with an alarm clock that works by faking a dawn. 6. Watch sweets and alcohol. Research suggests that people with SAD process sugar differently in winter than in summer (or with light therapy). Cutting down on simple sugars can help stabilize your serotonin levels.

7. If you wear eyeglasses, remove them for at least 20 minutes and expose yourself to natural sunlight. Eyeglasses and especially sunglasses can block the entry of sunlight into the eyes and slow down its effects on the body. 8. Cut down on coffee and other caffeinated beverages. Several studies have linked depression with a high intake of caffeine. They show that depressed patients tend to consume fairly large amounts. Try substituting herbal tea, decaf coffee or mineral water.

Restless Legs Syndrome Can you imagine having the uncontrollable urge to move your legs every time you try to sleep at night? According to Gregg Caporaso, a neurologist at Northern Westchester Hospital, many patients face this condition nightly. If the need to get up and move is keeping you from getting your beauty sleep, you may have restless legs syndrome (RLS). This baffling ailment is primarily thought of as a sleep disorder since it can keep sufferers—and their partners — from getting the “deep sleep” they need for good health. Patients usually can’t be specific about the sensation. They simply complain of a very uncomfortable sensation in their legs that gives them the urge to move their legs. The condition often goes unrecognized or misdiagnosed, yet over 10 percent of Americans suffer from restless legs syndrome. Some people have infrequent episodes, or it just occurs a few times in their lives. If that’s the case, a patient may never seek a diagnosis or treatment. The ones that end up in my office tend to suffer with discomfort nightly. There are four signs to watch for, Caporaso said: An urge to move the legs that’s difficult to explain; the urge worsens when you’re at rest; the urge lessens if you move or stretch and; it’s always worse at night. Genetics may partly explain RLS: About 50 percent of the patients have a family member with the syndrome and women seem slightly more prone to RLS than men. In some patients, RLS has been associated with low levels of iron in the blood, which is a potentially reversible cause of the condition. If a patient has low iron levels, he or she may find relief through regular iron supplements. (Pregnant women often

experience RLS during pregnancy due to low iron, for examCertain types of ple.) medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, and cold and allergy medicines that contain antihistamines may worsen

symptoms; sometimes changing medications can help reduce RLS. Other solutions include lifestyle changes such as getting regular exercise and reducing your intake of caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco.

'

Some patients may need a prescription drug to relieve their RLS. Treatment options include drugs that boost the action of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain, sedatives, anti-seizure medications,

and narcotic pain killers. A drug that works for one patient may be completely ineffective in another. Finding a solution may take a bit of trial and error, but RLS sufferers can usually find relief, Caporaso reports.

ASK AN EXPERT Your Dental Health is the Best Present You Can Give to Yourself By Edward Feinberg DMD You know intuitively that Dentistry is critically important to health and well-being. Teeth that function properly are essential for optimal nutrition. Unhealthy teeth and gums can contribute to systemic conditions because bacteria from the mouth can more easily enter the blood stream. No doubt you—like most people--covet that winning smile, of key importance to your self-esteem. Your smile communicates attractiveness, confidence and friendliness. The state of your smile also reveals a great deal about you—not only your disposition, but how much you value projecting a positive self-image. It is an important ingredient for success—every bit as important as an expensive suit or a fancy car. Dentistry enhances your life 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the best present that you could give to yourself for the holidays. Are you among the 40% of adults who have avoided seeking regular dental care? According to the ADA, there are various reasons why. About 24.7% feel that visiting a dentist is not necessary until a problem occurs. The ADA estimates that 34.5% are afraid of the cost of dental care and 17% are afraid of the uncertainty of what care they might need. Approximately 26.3% have had a bad experience with the dentist and at least 21% avoid the dentist because they are afraid of pain. [American Dental Association 2008; “Key Dental Facts] If you are harboring these reasons for avoiding dental care, you are doing yourself a tremendous disservice in the long run. Knowledge is power, and misconceptions are preventing you from having the facts you need to make intelligent decisions about your oral health. A thorough examination can give you those facts. It is important to understand that people with missing teeth or advanced periodontal disease cannot chew food adequately. Repeated infections can take a toll on the body, and subsisting on soft food diets can be detrimental to health. People with missing or diseased teeth also live with embarrassment because they do not look and feel their best. Prevention is key to avoiding these consequences as you get older. A thorough examination starts with listening to your story without preconceived ideas or judgments. “Most patients”, says Dr. Jerome Groopman in his book How Doctors Think, “are gripped by fear and anxiety; some also carry a sense of shame about their disease. But a doctor gives more than psychological relief by responding empathetically to a patient.” When you tell your story, the doctor also obtains important clues to the diagnosis and proper treatment plan. There are different methods of preventing and treating dental disease.

Figure 1

It is the doctor's task to outline options available to you and recommend the best course of action for your individual circumstances. A good doctor may not have all the answers but he should care enough to search for them. When complex treatment is being considered, more than one examination visit may be required to determine the best treatment strategy. It is never a good idea to make a “snap” treatment decisions without careful thinking because it is so easy to overlook a detail that can seriously affect the outcome. The examination process should allow for the doctor’s “thinking” time in between visits, as well as consultation with such specialists as orthodontists, endodontists, oral surgeons and periodontists. The welfare of the patient is the highest concern. “First, do no harm” proclaims Hippocrates in his famous oath. In complex restorative cases it is common to have more than one treatment option, as there is no “one-size-fitsall”. A thorough dental examination should inform you about your oral health status, the best strategies for maintaining oral health, available options to correct any dental problems and the doctor’s recommendation based on intensive analysis. A complete work-up should also inform you about what to expect during and after treatment, as well as the total cost and available payment plans. You are entitled to have all the information you need to determine what is right for you. It is important that you are comfortable with your choice of treatments. You should never be coerced into having dental implants, for example, if you do not want them. As wonderful as they are, they are not a panacea for every dental problem, nor are they the only solution. Many patients are not being given the opportunity of saving their own teeth first. The reason is that today, fewer dentists are being trained properly in crown and bridgework procedures, but many have excellent implant skills.

Many patients do not realize that just because they were told that teeth have to be extracted does not necessarily mean that someone else cannot save them. Practitioners have different levels of expertise. Do not be afraid to seek additional information from others when deciding on dental treatment. The amateur practitioner, for example, commonly follows a piecemeal approach to dentistry that only considers filling a hole or a space. The expert, on the other hand, takes into account the overall health as well as potential problems that may cause create uncertainty in the future. “Taking uncertainty into account," says Dr. Jerome Groopman in his book How Doctors Think, "can enhance a physician’s therapeutic effectiveness, because it demonstrates his honesty, his willingness to be more engaged with his patients, his commitment to the reality of the situation rather than resorting to evasion, half-truth, and even lies. And it makes it easier for the doctor to change course if the first strategy fails, to keep trying. Uncertainty sometimes is essential for success.” You deserve this kind of thinking—especially those if you are reaching financially to have restorative dentistry. Finances are not the only consideration—just as important is the severity and duration of the treatment that you will have to sit through. Modern dentistry can perform miracles for you that were not possible a hundred years ago. Proper dental care can provide you with improved health, optimal function, and enhanced appearance. It is up to you to make the most of your opportunity to learn how. You deserve to know as much as possible about your dental health, so that you can make intelligent decisions based on fact instead of having decisions occur by default. “Good doctoring” explains Dr. Atul Gawande in his book Better, “is all about making the most of the hand that you’re dealt”. Dr. Edward Feinberg has been in private practice in Scarsdale since 1978. He holds degrees in Biology and Dentistry from Tufts University. Dr. Feinberg is a nationally recognized lecturer and author. He is currently writing a text book on precision attachment partial dentures for natural teeth and implants. Dr. Feinberg has served on four councils of the American Dental Association and is a past president of the Ninth District Dental Association.

The Importance of Elder Law: You must protect your assets, family and future now! For nearly 30 years, practicing law has been Ely Rosenzveig’s passion. His inspiration? That comes from, among other things, his life experiences, the people he has met, and the clients he works with every day. The widow who didn’t have a will and was concerned about her financial future. The family that was reeling from health issues impacting their elderly loved ones without any planning in place to address their needs, leaving them with the prospect of exorbitantly expensive care needs. Ely Rosenzveig was a rabbi in Westchester County. The plight of some in his congregation moved him to practice elder law and trust and estate planning. He would become a senior partner at one of the foremost elder law firms in the country, but left to join hands with his son, Ariel. “I really jumped at the opportunity to work in this area of law,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “I think it’s special kind of work. To help people and work with your son is incredibly rewarding. Ariel is a great asset – a wonderful and gifted young attorney.” The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. in White Plains practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and

estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the zealous advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. Appropriate estate and Medicaid planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. “People don’t want to talk about illness and death,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. ““It’s a tough subject. People are reluctant, but the type of measures that we implement for our clients can save them and their loved ones a lot of money. Proper planning will help provide financial and emotional security for all involved.”

The firm is very experienced in making sure that those eligible for Medicaid and Medicare get the benefits they deserve. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. has been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired, a dynamic only exacerbated with the passage of the Deficit reduction Act of 2006, and the new rules regarding the look-back requirements, and penalty period calculations for non-Medicaid exempt asset transfers. The firm has achieved remarkable results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided. No matter what the case, Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. prides itself on working with each client individually, catering to each one’s diverse needs. Estate planning should begin at a young age with a will, health care proxy, living

will and durable power of attorney. As you grow older and accumulate assets, it is especially important that you speak with an experience elder law attorney issues pertaining to issues concerning Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and further estate planning. Elder law is about more than just saving money. When viewed properly, elder law is about two major things: First, ensuring that your personal wishes — financial, medical, and legal — are carried out; and second, understanding that elder law is a family matter affecting an intricate web of individual relationships. Knowing that your potential long-term care needs have already been addressed frees you and your family from needless worry. And Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig are there to help their cherished clients every step of the way. “We want every client to feel like they are our only client,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “We are totally committed to ensuring that we be fully responsive to our clients’ every need. For us, this is tremendously rewarding. It is the very reason why we have become elder law attorneys.”

How to Stay

The holidays are coming! The holidays are coming! As I write this, I visions of biscuits and gravy, pumpkin pie and eggnog running through my head. Can I have all of these without feeling guilty about it and without putting on the holiday weight gain? The answer is YES! Previously we have talked about why we need to be health, the facts and myths about dieting and learning to love ourselves and coming to terms with our inner self. Now we are going to take all of that information and put it towards having a stressfree holiday season so we can enjoy all that it has to offer. Some people take the attitude of “well it’s the holidays, I expect to gain weight, I’ll take it off in January” or “I’ll be good, I will just make sure I don’t eat dessert”. The holidays come once a year and most people use this as an excuse to go on a food frenzy binge. I f we really break it down and think about it isn’t turkey available year round? How about sweet potatoes (I know I buy them all year long), Pumpkin pie—easy enough to make any time of year and all the ingredients are readily available. Eggnog is the exception unless you make it from scratch. So if all of these foods are available year round why do we have to go crazy for 2 months out of the year? Because they are put in front of us in abundance and all at the same time. Our brain sees this as an all or nothing experience.

Healthy

Oh—I HAVE to have that now, I won’t be able to get it again until next year is what we are thinking and then 1 cookie turns into 2, that small piece of pie turns into a heaping piece and so on. If you keep these points in mind, you should be able to get through the holiday season without feeling like a stuffed turkey yourself. 1—Remember ALL of this food is available year round. You can cook it or order it in a restaurant whenever you want it. 2—I have never been to someone’s house where they didn’t offer me to take food home. So, instead of stuffing yourself, take some home to enjoy (in moderation) later. 3—Go ahead, sample all of your favorites – but take a small portion (enough to satisfy your taste buds) and move on. 4—have something packed with protein before you go to that party or holiday dinner (hard- boiled egg,

cheese stick or a PLEXUS 96 protein shake)- this will take the edge off, keep you full and make it less likely that you will overeat. 5—Watch that alcohol—Alcohol triggers hunger so make sure you drink plenty of water. My rule of thumb is a large (20 ounces at least) of water in between alcoholic drinks. This serves 2 purposes….the water keeps you hydrated and will fill you up so you are less likely to eat as much. Enjoy the holidays, but don’t throw let your body suffer for your eyes being bigger than your stomach. Too much of a good thing is just that—TOO MUCH. Not only will you be upset at the weight you gained, you will be feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Once you put on the weight and are having a good time while doing it, it is that much harder to get In the mindset to lose it. Am I worried about the holidays—NOPE. Why you ask? Because I take 1 PLEXUS Slim drink a day and it curbs my cravings for

During the Holidays

sugars and carbs and decreases my appetite. I still enjoy all the foods that I love but only eat half as much as I used to because I am satisfied at the smaller amount. I no longer look at desserts and go I CAN’T have that—I DON’T want it now. If I really want a cookie or a piece of pie I will have it but I will NOT over indulge in it like I used to. winter Beauty Tips

Dropping temperatures, snow, slush - what a mess - doesn’t mean you have to be one. The brutal winter does't have to go hand-in-hand with frizzy hair and dry, sullen skin. Check out Healthcare News’ beauty tips to stay glowing and - even when the weather isn't. Start fresh Healthy skin begins with a clean slate. During winter months, use an emollient-rich body wash when you shower or bathe, as bar soaps can be dehydrating. If you have extra-sensitive skin, simply lather coconut oil onto your body before you enter the shower, and gently wash with a cotton cloth. Coconut oil and olive oil are excellent facial cleansers if your skin is dry or dehydrated, and are even able to remove makeup. If you have oilier skin, try cleansers containing botanical soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) or Castile soap, which is a simple combination of olive oil and soda. Moisturize Cold winds and furnace-dried air parch skin and hair. Use emollients such as healing jojoba, sweet almond, or Moroccan argan oil to replenish moisture. Lock moisture in place before outdoor activities with occlusive ingredients such as coconut oil and shea butter. Look for products containing nicotinamide (B3), which helps to increase epidermal lipogenesis and improve skin barrier function. Always moisturize when skin is slightly damp.

Dress for success Fashion preferences notwithstanding, staying gorgeous long term requires a little TLC from your wardrobe. Invest in a pair of cotton-lined gloves and wear them when temperatures drop to about 40 F (4 C) to keep precious moisture in your skin. Purchase a coordinating scarf to wrap around your face when cold winds threaten to dehydrate facial skin, and top off your look with a fashionable hat to keep you warm while also protecting the condition of your hair.

Key to healthy locks Give yourself a hot oil treatment as you do chores or soak in the tub. Simply apply a coin-sized amount of olive or coconut oil to dry hair. Cover hair with plastic shower cap and wrap a towel around your head. Natural body heat boosts the oil’s ability to condition hair. After 15 minutes, shampoo as usual. Beauty sleep Adequate sleep not only helps to prevent the tell-tale dark circles and bags of a night owl, but also is necessary to keep your immune system strong and to allow for much-needed body repair and maintenance. Eight hours of nightly sleep can also prevent weight gain—which is important because come spring you’ll shed the bulky sweaters. Aim for seven to nine hours nightly. When sleep won’t come, try supplemental melatonin, L-lysine, or 5-HTP. Fabulous foods Retaining moisture is the number one winter survival strategy for healthy skin, nails, and hair—and what you eat can play a huge role. Be sure to include adequate dietary omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, from fish oil to create healthy lipid membranes that help to keep water in cells. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E are also key to healthy skin: consider taking a multivitamin for insurance. Of course, having adequate H2O available is crucial, so aim to drink about eight glasses of water daily.

nutrients for faster weight loss Burn fat, fast! Calcium: Is a mineral that works in tandem with D to help you shed fat. Calcium is stored in fat cells, and researchers think that the more calcium a fat cell has, the more fat that cell will release to be burned. Calcium also promotes weight loss by binding to fat in your GI tract, preventing some of it from getting absorbed into your bloodstream. Protein: In addition to keeping hunger in check, regular doses of protein help to keep body composition--the amount of fat relative to muscle--in better proportion. Along with calcium and D, protein helps you to preserve muscle mass as you drop pounds. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These enable weight loss by switching on enzymes that trigger fat-burning in cells. They also help to boost mood, which may help reduce emotional eating. And omega 3s might improve leptin signaling in the brain, causing the brain to turn up fat burning and turn down appetite. Monounsaturated Fatty Acids: MUFAs are a type of fat found in olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados, peanut butter, and chocolate, and they have just one chemical bond (which is why they are called “mono” unsaturated). Research shows that MUFAs zero in on belly fat. Specific foods that are high in MUFAs--especially peanuts, tree nuts, and olive oil--have been shown to keep blood sugar steady and reduce appetite, too. Conjugated Linoleic Acid: CLAs are potent fat burners that are found, along with D and calcium, in dairy products. When we consume these foods, the CLA helps blood glucose enter body cells, so CLA can be burned for energy and not stored as fat. CLA also helps to promote fat burning, especially in muscles.

Your BLACK FRIDAY shopping (and survival) guide With Thanksgiving approaching, many of us are already thinking about turkey and football. However, others are contemplating a different contact sport: Black Friday shopping. Regardless of when your Black Friday shopping spree kicks off, the game plan is to get the best deals you can on the items you really want. Often, electronics items are at their lowest prices of the year on Black Friday, and it's easy to get caught up in the shopping frenzy and spend more than you really want to. Make your Black Friday shopping trip as successful (and enjoyable!) as possible by following these tips from the National Retail Foundation: Before Black Friday Make a list of absolutely everyone you need to buy for and how much you plan to spend on them before visiting any store. Be sure to remember any co-workers, teachers and other non-family and friends. If you know who you need to buy for and how much you can afford to spend, you can make best use of retailers ‘Buy Two Get Third Free’ type deals. Use the Internet to check and compare prices and products before heading out the door.

You can also sign up to receive emails from your favorite retailers. Be vigilant about searching for holiday promotions in newspapers and on their website as well. Not only will you save time by researching ahead of time, you’ll also save money on gas by not driving all over town. Know retailers’ return and exchange policies. Return policies vary, so knowing ahead of time whether or not you will have to ship back returns or exchanges or if you can return them to the physical store in your area will help in the long run. On Black Friday Remember when gift shopping you are buying for someone else’s wants and needs, not your own. Deciding whether you like a certain item isn’t really the point‌ The question is, will

Great Aunt Margaret like it? Having said that, don’t be afraid to take full advantage of holiday promotions you see on products you would like yourself. Treat yourself to something nice! Save yourself the guesswork and buy gift cards, especially for babysitters, newspaper carriers, doormen, teachers and other recipients of smaller-value gifts. They are a perfect way to let gift recipients choose what they want and a great way to stick to a budget. When walking through the mall or down Main Street, wear comfortable shoes! You’ll be walking on a lot of marble, concrete and tile. Make sure you have water and snacks with you too, or stop for lunch. This will give you time to check your list and prioritize the rest of the time you have that day.

after you’ve made your purchases Staple a gift receipt to the merchandise tag in case it needs to be returned or exchanged. Keep your original receipts with any warranty paperwork for the life of the warranty. Save yourself the headache: let the charity group at the mall wrap your gifts for you. This will save you a lot of time and free you up to do other things on your holiday to-do lists. Get any packages you are sending to people in the mail right away. Things are only going to get busier from here on out!

White Plains Hospital receives Consumer Choice Award Hospital receives award for the eleventh year White Plains Hospital has once again received the Consumer’s Choice Award from the National Research Corporation (NRC.) The Hospital is a nine-time winner of the award, which recognizes quality and image in healthcare by the Nebraska-based research corporation. The award identifies hospitals that healthcare consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image throughout the U.S. This is the eighteenth year National Research has awarded hospitals whose consumers have recognized them for providing the highest quality healthcare. Winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s Market Insights Survey. This study surveys over 270,000 households in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia. From the households surveyed, hospitals named by consumers are analyzed and ranked based on their Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, with the winning facilities being ranked the highest.

The National Research Corporation (NRC) is a healthcare research and quality improvement firm offering performance measurement and improvement services to health plans, hospitals, health care systems, physicians, and other healthcare organizations. Dedicated solely to the healthcare industry, NRC is a leading provider of ongoing performance measurement, improvement, analysis and tracking services to healthcare organizations. “We are thrilled to offer this annual award because we understand how important the role of reputation plays in healthcare consumer decision-making,” said Susan L. Henricks, President and Chief Operating Officer at National Research. “These winners have done an outstanding job of representing their organizations in terms of high quality care, improvement initiatives, and positive consumer perceptions and experiences. The consumers have spoken. And we congratulate the winning hospitals in receiving this honor.” For additional information, visit http://www.wphospital.org.

Healthcare News - Westchester

What is going on with the Health Insurance market? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC I think the real question may be what is not going on with health insurance market? Many Americans are still reeling from all of the changes and uncertainty currently underway. Keystone has dozens of clients that are losing their current health insurance policies as a direct result of the mandates in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). These folks are being forced to scramble to replace coverage by year’s end with very limited options. So I guess you cannot keep your plan…? People have many questions about the new products and the application process on both the Individual & Small Group (SHOP) Exchanges. Many are shocked to discover that all of the (4) basic ‘metal’ plans that are offered have very high deductibles and very high coinsurance by design. To make matters worse, they are not all that competitive. These same people also want to know what products are going to be offered by the carriers in their state directly off the Exchanges. Many of my clients want nothing to do with the Exchanges and for good reason. As I write this article, the Federal Health Insurance Exchange website is not currently available leaving millions of people in the lurch. More importantly, there are serious security problems with all insurance Exchanges from cyber threats both internally and externally. While no one will dispute the fact that hackers will attempt to gain access and steal information off these sites, what many people do not know or realize is who exactly will have complete access to all of their personal and financial information immediately. The enrollers currently employed in the Exchanges, in New York they are called ‘Navigators’, are independent contractors with little or no professional insurance experience. Even more disturbing is the fact that these people are not insurance licensed and have not been background checked. It appears they could be anybody, including individuals looking to commit identity theft. Moreover, according to an October 2013 Medical Society of the State of New York survey, 44% of the doctors said they will not be participating in the Exchanges while an additional 33% said they were “not sure”. Add to this the fact that all Exchange product plan networks are smaller than those previously offered by the same carriers directly and I guess you cannot keep your doctor…? Some carriers in the New York small group market, like Emblem Health for instance, have gone one step further and have permanently exited the marketplace altogether. Other carriers will be offering new products to individuals who NO LONGER qualify for small group plans. All of these new plans are much more expensive in order to conform with the mandates and in most cases unaffordable. This goes for husbands and wives who own a business together with no other employees. These companies will no longer be eligible for small group plans according to the PPACA guidelines and will lose their coverage. My advice to people is if they have a health plan they can keep, then keep it. It may be prudent to stay away from the Exchanges for as long as possible to see what happens next year. Look to the carriers who are still offering small group plans directly as their traditional underwriting process is much more secure. If you are going to lose your coverage at the end of this year or upon your renewal next year, find a broker as soon as possible who can educate and assist you with all of the changes and new offerings. For more information about Group Health Insurance please call Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC at 914-682-2190 or toll free 877-676-9900. What do doctors do to treat their own pain? As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
