Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

“As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those all-toocommon, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix Internist, New York, NY the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting.

Some parents in Fairfield County are cheering the start of a new school year. However, others may be singing the blues, knowing they’ll be missing leisurely days of easy hugs or spontaneous family outings, as their little ones learn to navigate school hallways and unfamiliar social terrain.

Yes, parents can experience the back to school blues, too. If you’re dreading a new school year, there are simple ways to cope with the separation anxiety, even if you can’t watch your little one get on the bus: · Be a school volunteer. There are lots of opportunities for parents to be involved in the school.

Plan a school party, sign up as a reading volunteer or math aid or come in on career day to talk about your job. It's also nice for the child. It gives them a sense of being special. · Pursue other interests. Parents who suddenly have time on their hands can embrace interests they may have put off, such as yoga, music lessons, a book club, volunteering at a food bank or signing up for some adult education classes. · Remember, it’s OK to cry. Don’t do it at the child's school, or in front of the child, but it’s OK to cry in private. Any kind of change can engender feelings of loss. Losing day-to-day contact does require a shift and sometimes that's a little uncomfortable.

It will hurt, she says, but it will also get better.

If you feel more like cheering than crying at the sight of a little one climbing onto the school bus, go for it.

Remember, you can do this. Have a great school year!

• If your child’s school bus has lap/shoulder seat belts, make sure your child uses one at all times when in the bus.

When Your Child Is Bullied

Back-to-School Health & Safety Tips Making the First Day Easier

• Remind your child that there are a lot of students who are uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are nervous and make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.

• Point out the positive aspects of starting school. Seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Refresh memories about previous years when your child may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because they had a good time.

• Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your student can walk to school or ride on the bus.

• If it’s a new school for your child, attend orientation and take an opportunity to tour the school and meet the teacher before the first day.

Backpack Safety

• Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.

• Pack light. Organize backpack to use all compartments.

Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back.

The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight.

• Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles.

• If your school allows, consider a rolling backpack.

When Your Child Is the Bully

• Be sure your child knows that bullying is never OK. • Set firm and consistent limits on your child's aggressive behavior.

• Be a positive role mode. Show children they can get what they want without teasing, threatening or hurting someone.

• Use effective, non-physical discipline, such as loss of privileges.

• Develop practical solutions with the school principal, teachers, counselors, and parents of the children your child has bullied.

• Some children need help organizing their homework. Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help overcome homework problems.

• Establish a good sleep routine. Insufficient sleep is associated with lower academic achievement in middle school, high school and college, as well as higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness. Adolescents should get 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night.

Before and After School Child Care

• During early and middle childhood, children need supervision. A responsible adult should be available to get them ready and off to school in the morning and supervise them after school until you return home from work.

• Children approaching adolescence (11- and 12-year-olds) should not come home to an empty house in the afternoon • If you choose a commercial after-school program, inquire about the training of the staff. There should be a high staff-to-child ratio, and the rooms and the playground should be safe.

Developing Good Homework & Study Habits

• Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework.

• Schedule ample time for homework.

• Establish a household rule that the TV and other electronic distractions stay off during homework time.

• Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for her.

• Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while studying.

It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically • If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you aren't able to help her yourself, a tutor can be a good solution.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is about being aware and informed

Prostate Cancer is a story of both great heartbreak and great hope. The heartbreak is that each year more than 29,000 men will die of this disease and that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death of U.S. men. However, if diagnosed early, the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. At ten years post diagnosis, 98 percent of men diagnosed early, remain alive.

Prostate cancer is an extremely complex disease—multiple subtypes of this cancer exist, some aggressive and lethal, others non-aggressive and non-life-threatening. The vast majority of prostate cancer occurs as an indolent, slow-growing form of the disease that poses little threat to men’s lifespans.Learn about prostate cancer and talk to your doctor before you decide to get tested or treated.

Symptoms Men can have different symptoms for prostate cancer. Some men do not have symptoms at all.

Some symptoms of prostate cancer are difficulty starting urination, frequent urination (especially at night), weak or interrupted flow of urine, and blood in the urine or semen.

Risk Factors There is no way to know for sure if you will get prostate cancer. Men have a greater chance of getting prostate cancer if they are 50 years old or older, are African-American, or have a father, brother, or son who has had prostate cancer.

African-American men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from the disease than white men with prostate cancer.

Screening Tests Two tests are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer— Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test: PSA is a substance made by the prostate. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood, which may be higher in men who have prostate cancer.

However, other conditions such as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH, an enlarged but noncancerous prostate), prostate infections, and certain medical procedures also may increase PSA levels.

Digital rectal exam (DRE): A doctor, nurse, or other health care professional places a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the size, shape, and hardness of the prostate gland.

Should You Get Screened?

Not all medical experts agree that screening for prostate cancer will save lives. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against PSA-based screening for men who do not have symptoms. The potential benefit of prostate cancer screening is finding cancer early, which may make treatment work better.

Potential risks include— • False negative test results (the test says you do not have cancer when you do).

• False positive test results (the test says you have cancer when you do not).

• Follow-up tests such as a biopsy to diagnose cancer.

• Treatment of prostate cancers that may never affect your health.

• Mild to serious side effects from treatment of prostate cancer.

Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening before getting tested.

Thousands of adults and children are expected to participate in the 20th annual Family Health & Fitness Day USA (FHFD) held on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Families will participate at locations throughout the country. Events will take place at community sites including hospitals, health clubs, YMCAs, state & county health departments, park districts, houses of worship, and schools.

Organized as a public/private partnership by the Health Information Resource Centersm, Family Health & Fitness Day USA was conceived, in part, as a response to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health. This landmark report made it clear that health benefits can be obtained from moderate physical activity on a regular basis. In addition, the Surgeon General's Report stated that the majority of Americans, and especially children from 12 to 21, are not exercising nearly enough.

This year's programs will include exercise demonstrations, health fairs, family walks and more. Most programs involve family activities as well as education and information about health and fitness topics.

Connecticut Children’s names a new Surgeon-In-Chief Christine Finck, MD, has been appointed Surgeon-In-Chief of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to impact the lives of children by playing a role in shaping the vision of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center through innovation, community engagement and research,” said Dr. Christine Finck.

Dr. Finck has served as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery since 2007 and is an associate professor of pediatrics and surgery at UCONN Health. Most recently, she took on the role of Associate Director of Academic Affairs, advocating for various clinical, academic and research initiatives across the Medical Center.

Through her own research, Dr. Finck has revolutionized outcomes of pediatric and neonatal diseases, most specifically leading efforts focused on identifying and treating those that affect the lungs, esophagus and brain. This past May, her efforts were recognized by The Group on Women in Medicine and Science, who awarded her the Outstanding Clinical Scientist Woman Faculty Award.

The latest advanced smart technology at UConn Health hunts for skin cancer and keeps an eye on changing moles.

'This technology is going to help us save more lives from skin cancer and melanoma,' says Dr. Jane Grant-Kels.

The typical nude skin cancer checks with long photo sessions at your dermatologist’s office to track any suspicious skin marks just got a lot more accurate, while reducing the chance of unnecessary biopsies.

UConn Health is the only institution to date in Connecticut to offer the latest advanced smart technology that hunts for skin cancer and keeps an eye on changing moles.

An integrated body-scanning camera and smart software technology “helps us find skin cancer in a flash,” says Dr. Jane Grant-Kels, professor and vice chair of UConn Health’s Department of Dermatology and director of the UConn Cutaneous Oncology Center and Melanoma Program.

The technology, called FotoFinder Bodystudio Automated Total Body Mapping, allows dermatology staff to take 20 or more photos of a patient’s entire body, including the palms and the soles of the feet, in about 10 minutes. It also allows easy comparison of photographs visit after visit, and alerts the dermatologist to changes or new growths.

“This technology is going to help us save more lives from skin cancer and melanoma,” says Grant-Kels. “It allows for early detection and a more exact science of monitoring patients’ skin changes.”

If concerning growths are detected, another recently arrived technology called In Vivo Reflectance Confocal Microscopy uses a non-invasive optical imaging technique that provides a high-resolution cellular image of the skin. This new technology is safe and painless, and in many cases can be used in lieu of a painful skin biopsy.

“FotoFinder coupled with Confocal will help us go a long way to reducing the number of biopsies performed, including unnecessary biopsies of non-cancerous skin growths,” Grant-Kels says.

For baseline and follow-up photo sessions using the FotoFinder technology, a patient will be guided by a red laser light and a specially designed floor mat to ensure proper positioning. The smart body-scanning camera automatically moves into various positions to take photos of the entire body, and the software module rapidly stitches the photos together for the dermatologist to review.

After the patient’s follow-up photo session, within seconds the system uses its computer technology to precisely place the most recent skin images atop the baseline photos. The software seamlessly aligns and analyzes the new and old photos, and then circles all the detected new and visibly changed skin lesions and moles.
