Some parents in Fairfield County are cheering the start of a new school year. However, others may be singing the blues, knowing they’ll be missing leisurely days of easy hugs or spontaneous family outings, as their little ones learn to navigate school hallways and unfamiliar social terrain.

Yes, parents can experience the back to school blues, too. If you’re dreading a new school year, there are simple ways to cope with the separation anxiety, even if you can’t watch your little one get on the bus: · Be a school volunteer. There are lots of opportunities for parents to be involved in the school.

Plan a school party, sign up as a reading volunteer or math aid or come in on career day to talk about your job.

It's also nice for the child. It gives them a sense of being special. · Pursue other interests. Parents who suddenly have time on their hands can embrace interests they may have put off, such as yoga, music lessons, a book club, volunteering at a food bank or signing up for some adult education classes. · Remember, it’s OK to cry. Don’t do it at the child's school, or in front of the child, but it’s OK to cry in private. Any kind of change can engender feelings of loss. Losing day-to-day contact does require a shift and sometimes that's a little uncomfortable. It will hurt, she says, but it will also get better.

If you feel more like cheering than crying at the sight of a little one climbing onto the school bus, go for it.

If you’re a parent, you know what that means – busy mornings getting the kids ready and out the door with backpacks and lunch bags in hand. With just a little planning, you can help your child make healthy food choices throughout the school day.

School meals and snacks are big topics of conversation this year, and students have already started to see healthier options popping up in the cafeteria. By serving healthy foods and drinks at home, you can help your kids learn how to choose healthy options when they’re away from home.

Packing lunch is another way to make sure they’re getting the right foods and drinks. It’s not always easy to get up in the morning, make breakfast, get ready for work, get the kids out the door and pack a lunch without feeling frazzled. It may be helpful to pack lunches the night before, either after dinner or before the kids’ bedtime. Encourage your children to help by choosing foods they like to eat, and packing them in a lunch bag or lunchbox. When kids help make it and choose it, they’ll most likely eat it!

When it comes to drinks, water is always the best choice. Adding fruit (like raspberries or lemon) or packing plain or naturally flavored seltzer water are two ways to mix things up a bit. It’s best not to send flavored milk, which is packed with a lot of added sugar. Instead, send them with low-fat or non-fat plain milk.

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Include a variety of foods for lunches and snacks that you’ll feel good about packing and your kids will love eating.

Stuck for some new ideas? Make things easier by choosing one food from each category below to make a delicious and healthy lunch or snack.

The key to good nutrition is to eat a variety of foods. Every time you pack a lunch with foods like fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products, you’re doing something positive for your child’s health. Greenwich Hospital announces graduates of oncology nursing fellowship program PAGE 10

Greenwich Hospital announced the graduation of three nursing students – two from Fairfield University and one from Boston College – from the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship Program, first implemented at the hospital last summer.

The program was made possible through the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Training and Development Fund, established by retired Stamford business executive Frederick C. Flynn Jr. in memory of his late wife, who died of ovarian cancer.

The three students at Greenwich Hospital – Kelly Marra from Boston College, and Emily Kopas and Felicia Staropoli from Fairfield University – were among 26 oncology nursing Flynn fellows at ten leading hospitals around the country this summer and were the first class to graduate in 2015.

Flynn’s fellowship program grew out of his experience with Greenwich Hospital’s Palliative Care Program in April 2013, when his wife was in the final stages of her courageous three-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Profoundly moved by the compassionate care she received from medical director Donna Coletti, MD and the palliative care nursing team, Flynn launched a matching gift campaign and raised $125,000 in support of the Palliative Care Program. Flynn then expanded the fund’s mission to include creating a comprehensive fellowship program to help develop the next generation of oncology nurses. Greenwich Hospital served as the initial “pilot” program.

During the eight-week program at Greenwich Hospital, the three nursing fellows shadowed seasoned nurses, becoming integral hands-on members of the

cancer care teams in the Operating Room, Radiation, Chemotherapy Infusion, the Cancer Registry and Oncology Research.

They also worked with nurse navigators and the Quality and Safety team.

“Our hope is that this fellowship provided these three vibrant, energetic young women with a unique exposure to the field of oncology nursing that will inform and guide them as they build their own nursing careers,” said Maria Marini, RN, program director, Oncology.

During the graduation ceremony, each student presented an evidence-based research project. Felicia Staropoli spoke about bereavement care and created a resource guide for families. “Children are often overlooked in grief,” she said “and can develop behavioral issues without appropriate support.”

Kelly Marra focused on pain management for end-of-life patients, including the options and obstacles faced with the use of opioids. Emily Kopas discussed cancer survivorship and rehabilitation, noting that patients are survivors from the day of diagnosis and need to be encouraged to start rehabilitation immediately and continue through treatment and beyond.

Addressing the nursing fellows, Flynn said, “You are an extraordinarily talented group of students who are a credit to your families and to your nursing schools. You are going to make outstanding oncology nurses. Thanks to the wonderful staff and enthusiastic program mentors at Greenwich Hospital you are well equipped to provide excellent quality of care to your future patients and their families.”

The best breakfast foods give you fuel in the tank for energy that lasts. They boost your metabolism, fight disease and help you keep your weight down. The worst breakfast foods do the opposite. They lead to mid-morning crashes, wreak havoc on your metabolism, encourage disease and cause weight gain.

You shouldn’t skip breakfast — doing so can make you gain weight, lose energy and think poorly. But you should skip the worst breakfast options. If you see these five foods on the menu, run the other way.

1. Doughnut and pastries: A recipe for weight gain Doughnuts will cost you 250–550 calories, but the 20–50 grams of sugar in each is the real problem. With such a huge amount of sugar in a small package, your body pumps out lots of insulin to accommodate. A huge blood sugar peak leads to an even bigger sugar crash. This extreme up-and-down leaves you hungry soon after your breakfast — and you’ll crave more refined carbs. It’s a vicious cycle of unhealthy eating that starts with the first doughnut.

2. Sausage biscuit: Hypertension’s helper The sausage biscuit is basically a saturated fat and sodium bomb nestled in a trans fat sleeping bag. If your blood vessels could talk, they would plead, “Please don’t do it to us!” as you place your order at the fast-food drive-through. The sky-high sodium in the highly processed sausage can make your blood pressure surge.

If you have hypertension, it may increase your risk for stroke.

Nitrates and nitrites in sausage have been linked to increased risk of certain cancers, too.

3. Flavored non-dairy creamer: A coffee disaster If you think non-dairy creamer is a healthy option, think again.

Many non-dairy creamers simply swap saturated fat for trans fat (check the label for “partially hydrogenated” oil), plus sugar and artificial sweeteners. Trans fat increases your risk of heart attack and stroke by increasing LDL cholesterol. Predictions say decreasing trans fat consumption by even a little could help prevent more than 10,000 deaths a year. To perk up your coffee, try unsweetened vanilla almond milk, low-fat milk or a small amount of chocolate milk instead.

4. Bright, sugary cereals: A rainbow of hyperactivity Those magically colored kids’ cereals aren’t such a bright choice.

The FDA has noted that food dyes may contribute to hyperactivity in children with ADHD, even if not in other children. A 2012 study backed up that idea but said more research is needed. Even if food coloring’s effects aren’t fully understood, these cereals are usually loaded with sugar — empty calories for your little ones.

5. Loaded bagel: An invitation for diabetes Your body works hard to keep you functioning at night. Don’t thank it with inflammationcausing calories in the form of a bagel loaded with cream cheese or butter.

Except for the occasional 100 percent whole grain option, most bagels are 300–500 calories worth of starch. Slathering on cream cheese or butter adds more calories and saturated fat.

Diets high in refined carbohydrates have been linked to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, so don’t make bagels a regular morning meal.

Hospital for Special Care (HSC) is honoring eight area students for their academic achievements. The first Florence Timura Medical Student Scholarship was awarded to Caitlin M. Bette-Waner, a fourthyear medical student at University of Connecticut (UConn) School of Medicine in the amount of $12,000. This scholarship was made possible through a contribution to HSC by Mike Timura, a longtime friend, business associate and benefactor of the Hospital, in honor of his wife Florence.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days.
