Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further.

After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As you might know, the color pink has become synonymous with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With that in mind, Healthcare News has a request for our readers: If you don’t own an item of pink clothing, go out and purchase something pink.

According to Cancer.org, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Here in Westchester County, our families, our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters have been affected by the disease.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a special time for to promote breast cancer awareness and provide information on the disease. Established in 1985, this awareness month, now an international health observance, has from the start aimed to promote a mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

Most of us have been touched by breast cancer in some way.

So it’s time for you to be pretty, or handsome, in pink. Even better, you don’t have to wear your pink garb only in October. Sport it all year to support the wonderful cause.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.

breast cancer MYTH Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer.

TRUTH Only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. But if you discover a persistent lump in your breast or notice any changes in breast tissue, it should never be ignored. It is very important that you see a physician for a clinical breast exam. He or she may possibly order breast imaging studies to determine if this lump is of concern or not. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, getting an annual clinical breast exam, and scheduling your routine screening mammograms.

MYTH Men do not get breast cancer; it affects women only.

TRUTH Quite the contrary, each year it is estimated that approximately 2,190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 410 will die. While this percentage is still small, men should also check themselves periodically by doing a

breast self-exam while in the shower and reporting any changes to their physicians. Breast cancer in men is usually detected as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola. Men carry a higher mortality than women do, primarily because awareness among men is less and they are less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer, which can cause a delay in seeking treatment.

MYTH A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread.

TRUTH A mammogram, or x-ray of the breast, currently remains the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer.

Breast compression while getting a mammogram cannot cause cancer to spread. According to the National Cancer Institute, “The benefits of mammography, however, nearly always outweigh the potential harm from the radiation exposure. Mammograms require very small doses of radiation.

The risk of harm from this radiation exposure is extremely low.� The standard recommendation is an annual mammographic screening for women beginning at age 40. Base your decision on your physician's recommendation and be sure to discuss any remaining questions or concerns you may have with your physician.

breast cancer MYTH If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are likely to develop breast cancer, too.

TRUTH While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. Statistically only about 10% of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of this disease.

MYTH If the gene mutation BRCA1 or BRCA2 is detected in your DNA, you will definitely develop breast cancer.

TRUTH According to the National Cancer Institute, regarding families who are known to carry BRCA1 or BRCA2, “not every woman in such families carries a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, and not every cancer in such families is linked to a harmful mutation in one of these genes. For people who discover they have the harmful mutation, there are various proactive measures that can be done to reduce risk. These include taking a hormonal therapy called Tamoxifen or deciding to take a surgical prevention approach which is to have bilateral prophylactic mastectomies, usually done with reconstruction. Most women will also have ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as well since there is no reliable screening test for the early stages of developing ovarian cancer.

MYTH Antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer.

TRUTH Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer MYTH Breast cancer is contagious.

TRUTH You cannot catch breast cancer or transfer it to someone else's body. Breast cancer is the result of uncontrolled cell growth of mutated cells that begin to spread into other tissues within the breast. However, you can reduce your risk by practicing a healthy lifestyle, being aware of the risk factors, and following an early detection plan so that you will be diagnosed early if breast cancer were to occur.

NCHM 2016 will highlight Chiropractic as a first line of defense against musculoskeletal pain During National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM) 2016 this October, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) will build on its ongoing efforts to raise public awareness of the value of a conservative approach to pain management in the face of the U.S. opioid epidemic with the theme and hashtag “#Chiropractic1st�.

With government agencies, respected health organizations and the media beginning to recognize and promote the use of nonpharmacologic options for chronic pain, it’s important for healthcare consumers to understand that chiropractic services are an important first line of defense against pain and may in some cases lessen or eliminate the need for over-the-counter and prescription painkillers.

National Chiropractic Health Month is a nationwide observance held annually in October. The event helps to raise public awareness of the benefits of chiropractic care and its natural, whole-person, patient-centered and drug-free approach to health and wellness. 1. Brush 2x a Day, for 2 Minutes Optimal oral health in National Dental Hygiene month and beyond starts with the toothbrush.

One of the most important things we can do is to brush our teeth for two minutes, in the morning & at night before we go to bed.

Proper brushing reduces sticky-icky plaque, prevents tooth decay, and helps limit the onset of gum disease.

The History of National Physical Therapy Month Initially, National Physical Therapy Week was celebrated each June starting in 1981.
