Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those allyet frequently too-common, debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further.

After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

20’s: Find a good physician that you are comfortable with and schedule your annual well-visit. Identify a physical activity that you enjoy and can regularly fit into your lifestyle. Quit Smoking, drink in moderation and get into a regular sleep routine, drink your H20. Review birth control options for long term family planning.

Spend quality time with supportive and like-minded friends.

30’s: Continue to schedule regular well-visits with your physician.

Determine which medical tests are necessary for your age; don’t over-test Review physical activity to include new exercise modalities based upon your lifestyle and current trends to find what works best for you. Stick with it.

If you are having children or planning to, find a good OB/GYN and schedule your appointment. Increase activities that make you happy and share them with supportive friends. Drink in moderation, sleep well, drink your H20 and consistently eat a healthy diet.

40’s:

Well-visits should be combined with age-appropriate screenings for cancer and heart health. Discuss peri-menopause and maintain a healthy weight. Get a mammogram. Continue to exercise regularly, drink in moderation, sleep well, and drink your H20. Stay connected with friends and family.

Consider your doctor a resource, not part of your daily routine. Stay fit with age and ability-appropriate exercise and don’t overdue. Know your limits.

Learn to prevent falls by taking yoga, aquatic exercise and stretch classes.

Take your Vitamin D. Drink in moderation, sleep well, drink your H20 and maintain a healthy weight. Stay connected to family and friends. Stay curious.

Take enrichment classes, travel, read and explore to keep your mind sharp.

Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. But the American Heart Association (AHA) is seeking to change that with prevention and awareness through their Go Red For Women Luncheon, set for Friday, June 2nd from 10AM to 2PM, at the Hilton Westchester in Rye. Dr. David Brady – A new approach to fibromyalgia

Nearly 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. And for many of them, a combination of ongoing, widespread physical pain coupled with fatigue, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances and even gastrointestinal problems sends them to doctor after doctor in search of relief.

“Physicians sometimes end up just dismissing a patient by telling them it’s all in their heads – but that’s rarely true,” says Dr. David Brady, whose private practice, Whole Body Medicine, is based in Fairfield, Connecticut.

For more than two decades, Dr. Brady - an internationally known speaker, researcher and author on the subject of nutritional, functional and integrative medicine - has treated thousands of patients coping with body-wide pain, as well as conditions involving autoimmunity, thyroid and the gastro-intestinal systems.

A special focus of his practice: helping patients recover from the sometimes-puzzling condition known as fibromyalgia.

Characterized by diffuse pain and body tenderness, fibromyalgia syndrome often has pain symptoms confused with arthritis. But it doesn’t affect the joints or trigger inflammation or damage to joints, muscles or tissues as arthritis does. Fibromyalgia can also cause fatigue and other symptoms that impact the sufferer’s ability to carry on daily activities.

“It isn’t always easy to pinpoint, and there’s a lot of misdiagnosis,” says Dr. Brady, a licensed naturopathic medical physician in Connecticut and Vermont and a board certified clinical nutritionist who also completed his initial clinical training as a doctor of chiropractic.

“Some patients come to me as a last resort, after no one has been able to help them,” says Dr. Brady, who also serves as vice president for Health Sciences, director of the Human Nutrition Institute, and associate professor of Clinical Sciences at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.

“Part of the challenge is that most physicians aren’t taught enough about fibromyalgia and how to accurately diagnose it. If a patient, especially a woman, says they’re achy, tired and depressed, they’re often diagnosed with fibromyalgia before ruling other things out. They are then usually prescribed one of the FDAapproved medications for fibromyalgia, which are basically re-purposed antidepressant and anti-epileptic drugs given new names for use in fibromyalgia.”

He adds that, on the other hand, “Some patients insist they have fibro, when it turns out they actually have something else with similar symptoms. It can take time to work through the possibilities and diagnose accurately to arrive at the most appropriate treatment plan.”

Over the years - as a result of treating patients from around the region, nation and world, and publishing numerous medical

research papers, medical textbook chapters and articles on fibromyalgia - Dr. Brady has become known as a leading patient advocate in the field of fibromyalgia and global (body-wide) pain syndromes.

His most recent book, “The Fibro-Fix,” published by Rodale, outlines his methods to help patients determine if they might be suffering from fibromyalgia - or other conditions with similar symptoms that are often confused with it.

Dr. Brady uses a multifaceted approach to dealing with fibromyalgia.

“It’s individualized for each patient,” he says. “The overall approach is based

partially on health and lifestyle modifications to help improve nutrition and deal with other factors such as stress. Sometimes we use botanical medicines and targeted supplements - they’re important in chronic-disease management. We also use safe movement to regain range of motion, as well as Dr. Brady adds: “I wrote the fibromyalgia book for the public – I wanted to ‘take the story to the streets’ to let people know there is hope in dealing with it.”

Lisa Dupuis, President & CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association of South Central Connecticut, has announced that five local nursing students each received a $1,200 scholarship through the Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing program.

The Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing program was originally developed by the VNA South Central to be a collaborative effort to celebrate outstanding nurses and elevate the nursing profession. The goals of the program are to encourage retention, focus public attention, recognize the breadth and scope of nursing practice at the local level, and inspire future nurses. To help achieve these goals, for the past fourteen years, the Nightingale program has provided scholarships to outstanding students from five local nursing schools: Yale School of Nursing, Southern Connecticut State University Department of Nursing, Quinnipiac University School of Nursing, Sacred Heart University College of Nursing, and Gateway Community College Department of Nursing.

Fanta Bayoh, the recipient from Yale University, is a first year Master's student in the Family Nurse Practitioner Specialty Program. During her undergraduate years at UCLA, Fanta worked in the Translational Oncology Research Labs and Haworth Surgical Institute. Fanta currently founded Yale School of Nursing's Black Minority Nurses Organization and she is a volunteer at the HAVEN free clinic.

Nguyen Nguyen, the recipient from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), is a native of Vietnam. Nguyen is currently a student in the SCSU Accelerated Career Entry program. She previously received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of Connecticut. Her career goals include practicing as a pediatric APRN in order to give back to those less fortunate.

Women’s Heart Wellness honors Csuka, Marrakech at Brunch

The Women’s Heart Wellness committee recently honored Claudia Csuka, of Beacon Falls, and Marrakech, Inc., of Woodbridge, with its Caring Heart Award at The 12th Annual Women’s Heart Wellness and Caring Heart Award Brunch.

The award recognizes individuals and groups that foster initiatives to promote and improve the general health and well-being of all. This is the ninth year that the award was bestowed.

As a volunteer at Griffin Hospital, Csuka positively impacts many patients’ lives as part of the hospital’s vital patient stories and complimentary therapies programs. She also volunteers to provide free rides for individuals needing transportation to their medical appointments.

Marrakech, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization that has provides services to assist individuals with special needs in achieving greater self-sufficiency while they experience the best quality of life possible.

The Women’s Heart Wellness Committee consists of healthcare professionals, heart patients and women from throughout the Valley communities.

The primary focus of the group is to increase heart health awareness among women, empower them to love and save their hearts, and ensure they are provided the means to do so through education and rehabilitation. Membership is open to all interested persons.

Take the path to better health with Griffin’s Wellness for Life

Griffin Hospital is helping individuals make the change for a healthier life this summer with its Wellness for Life program.

Wellness for Life is a 12-week, evidence-based lifestyle change program that helps prevent and treat many chronic diseases. According to a report by the US Department of Health and Human Services, 80 percent of chronic diseases, like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, can be prevented with better lifestyle choices in nutrition, activity and emotional health.

Starting Tues., June 13 from 13:30 p.m., the program offers a custom fitness evaluation, individual nutritional guidance, one-on-one coaching, and small, interactive health seminars so participants can make a commitment to a healthier life. Each participant also receives a Fitbit, which helps track participants’ activity, sleep patterns and food intake.

“Making changes for a healthy lifestyle isn’t easy – it requires oneon-one guidance and on-going support,” said Wellness for Life Program Director Eunice Lisk.

“This program helps people assess their lifestyle, provides them with a personalized plan to increase vitality and gives one-on-one and group support every step of the way to better health.”

Griffin Hospital is offering its 12-week lifestyle change program Wellness for Life starting June 13.

Wellness for Life focuses on hands-on learning, featuring an activity monitor, health coaching, and weekly group sessions to establish healthy weight control, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, better sleep and energy, and increased personal strength and resilience.

Since its start in 2015, Wellness for Life participants have seen significant weight loss and reductions in blood pressure, and the program has received high satisfaction scores from participants in meeting expectations and for presentations by the expert speakers.

Wellness for Life meets on Tuesday evenings from 1-3:30 p.m. at the new Occupational Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, 10 Progress Dr., Shelton.

Middlesex launches new partnership with Rwanda Hospital

Middlesex Hospital has a new partnership, and it’s with the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali, the main teaching hospital in Rwanda.

Each year, Middlesex Hospital will send a physician and a resident to Rwanda for one month to work with pediatric doctors there. This year, Dr. Cliff O’Callahan, a member of the pediatric faculty and director of nurseries at the Hospital, and Dr. April Diep, a family medicine resident, made the trip.

The partnership mutually benefits both parties.

Middlesex Hospital is able to help medical staff and patients in Rwanda. In turn, Middlesex residents are able to learn about health care in a resource-limited country that deals with diseases and conditions that are rarely seen in the United States.

The partnership is the result of a long-standing relationship between Dr. O’Callahan and the hospital in Rwanda. A few years ago, Dr. O‘Callahan worked with Human Resources for Health to establish a functional pediatrics residency program in Rwanda, and he’s visited the country several times since. Funding for the Human Resources for Health Project is now at risk. Although the program’s future is in jeopardy, there is still a great need for doctors and residents from resource rich settings to work alongside teams in Rwanda, and Middlesex Hospital will do just that.

Now back in Connecticut, Dr. O’Callahan and Dr. Diep have returned to work at Middlesex Hospital. However, they continue to reflect on their trip. There are difficult stories and happy memories, and it takes a long time to process, Dr. Diep says.

Middlesex’s approach to this new partnership is unique and a model for others. While many residents and students from other hospitals do visit Rwanda, attending or supervising senior physicians don’t usually go with them. Middlesex’s arrangement allows for daily discussion, mentoring and reflection. It also means not burdening local Rwandan faculty, who are already incredibly busy, with overseeing American residents.

“I’m hoping more and more training programs will adopt this model,” Dr. O’Callahan says.

Dr. Diep described her month in Rwanda as a powerful experience. She was able to take on a teaching role and help Rwandan residents learn about quality improvement. She also provided guidance and served as a teaching resident for medical students in Rwanda. They have so much talent, but need that extra guidance because there are so many learners to every teaching doctor, Dr. Diep says.

While in Rwanda, Dr. Diep saw many conditions that are not common in the United States, such as malaria, and other conditions that were more advanced due to poor access to medical care. She learned how to deal with these conditions and other difficult issues, such as lack of medicine and lab tests.

“I really feel I learned so much, and it was an experience I will never forget,” Dr. Diep says.
