Happy Mother’s Day to all of our readers! We are celebrating mothers, sisters, aunts, friends and kids everywhere on May 8.

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. In 1907, Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphia native, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. She persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the second Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Jarvis and her supporters wrote to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful. By 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. Of course, some of the most special moms in the world live right here in Fairfield County, from Greenwich, to Stamford, to Weston, to Newtown.

Since its opening in July 2015, AFC Doctors Express Urgent Care in Norwalk has been a leading go-to medical facility in the local community.

“Our services encompass treatments for all sorts of non-life-threatening conditions and injuries - from allergies to stomach aches to minor sports mishaps,” says Ken Goldberg, owner of the management company of Doctors Express in Norwalk.

“For one thing, it’s getting harder and harder to schedule an immediate appointment with most primary-care doctors – sometimes it takes weeks, or even months.

People can just walk in to Doctors Express; no appointment is needed,” he says, adding that advance online pre-registration on their website is also an option, making it easy for patients to fill out paperwork before they arrive.

Another plus – Doctors Express offers longer daily hours than most regular medical providers do – a relief to busy families and other on-the-go folks. “It’s also a lot faster and less expensive than

going to the emergency room,” Goldberg adds. “Our patients are generally in and out within an hour.”

The Norwalk site provides overall family health care, vaccinations, treatments for bumps and bruises, x-ray services (also available on weekends), discreet STD testing, Lyme disease tests, and services for students from nearby colleges.

Pre-employment and pre-op physicals, as well as checkups for schools and camps, are also available.

Selina Santos, of Wilton, was diagnosed with high blood pressure and aortic insufficiency at age 34. She visited doctors who diagnosed her constant headaches and shortness of breath to be stress-related, and told her to lighten her work load.

When she was finally diagnosed with aortic insufficiency, leakage of the aortic valve, her doctor gave her a choice of “lifestyle change or surgery,” she chose lifestyle change.

“I made working out a regular part of my schedule. Now I do not let things bother me to the point of frustration and I am aware of what I eat, especially salt content,” she said, “Most importantly I started indoor cycling, it became such a regular thing, the owners of JOYRIDE studio asked me to instruct and now it’s been my mission to create a healthier lifestyle for others.”

Her message to other women, even young women is to “not ignore the signs!

The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and the Fairfield YMCA brought together wellness exhibitors providing information about health and wellness on Sunday, April 24, 2016. The free, rain or shine event was open to the public and held at the Fairfield YMCA, 841 Post Road, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fitness demonstrations (Outdoor Boot Camp, Qi Gong, Pedal and Pump Cycling & TRX Suspension Training) plus archery, golf chipping clinic & fencing, was held. Also included were screenings (blood pressure & blood sugar), plus outdoor kids’ activities: moon bounce, obstacle course, face painting and the Police Explorers Mobil Command Post, throughout the day.

Fruits and vegetables These are packed with key vitamins and nutrients, such as calcium and fiber. Aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Lean protein When you pledge to eat healthy, it’s okay to enjoy meat. The important thing is to choose lean meat. This includes boneless, skinless chicken breasts and turkey cutlets, and leaner cuts of ground beef. Broil grill, roast, poach, or boil meat instead of frying. Also try to avoid sauces and gravies that are high in fat and sugar.

Seek low-fat dairy options While many dairy products are rich in protein and calcium, they are also high in fat, which can cause cholesterol to build up in arteries increasing the risk for many major health problems.

Drink in moderation Drinking too much alcohol increases blood pressure and the risk of stroke. Aim to drink no more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women.

Watch your calories Part of eating healthy means having a healthy weight, which includes not eating more calories than you burn off. Calorie intake is based on gender, age, and activity level.

Plan Vending machines and fast food can be tempting when you’re rushed or stressed. To eat healthy, plan menus ahead of time and keep healthy snacks on hand.

Change your choices Simple changes in how you prepare and ask for food can add up to big changes. Choose grilled fish instead of fried. At a restaurant, choose vegetables as a side instead of French fries.

Stay positive It can take a long time to begin new habits in the way you eat and drink, so go easy on yourself as you’re starting out. Remember that every small change you make in the way you eat adds up to big differences in your overall health.

May Marks National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month patient safety, workforce shortage to be addressed The month of May marks National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month. The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), partnering with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society (ATS), and the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) recognizes the devoted professionals whose compassion and dedication to the care of the critically ill and injured has made a significant difference in the lives of patients and their families.

At some point in their lives, nearly 80% of all Americans will suffer, or know someone who is suffering, from a life-threatening illness or injury. From heart attack and stroke, to burns and gunshot wounds, every day thousands of people suffer from critical conditions that place their lives in jeopardy.

In the rapid pace of the intensive care unit (ICU), each critical care practitioner must quickly obtain

information, effectively convert it into knowledge, and then apply it to the best interests of the patients at the bedside. There are many ways to organize care within the ICU, but data show that optimal care is provided when an integrated team of dedicated experts is present to assess, initiate and adjust treatment to ensure that the best possible care is delivered to all critically ill or injured patients the moment it's needed.

The core of this multiprofessional team consists of intensivists (physicians credentialed in critical care medicine), critical care nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists. Primary care physicians, physician assistants, social workers, dietitians, ethicists, consultant medical specialists, and other professionals are also often part of the team.

During the month of May, the Society of Critical Care Medicine encourages the public to applaud the efforts of the critical care team.

Wear blue on May 13! During the second Friday of the month wear blue to show your support of National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.
