Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

“As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same Internist, New York, NY wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”

Back and neck pain can be debilitating, and Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS is out to change that.

Non-surgical spinal decompression can be utilized when a disc is herniated, bulging, or compressed; these conditions may pinch a nerve or even the spinal cord and cause numbness, tingling, weakness and most predominantly, pain.

The technique involves a sophisticated machine that applies controlled, highly specific and gentle forces on the spine, which cause the bulge or herniation to retract off the nerve or spinal cord.

Spinal decompression is performed as a patient lies comfortably on the treatment table. A special belt connected to a computer is attached just above a patient’s hips and below the level of the discs being treated. A second belt is attached above the effected level. (The setup is different for the neck.)

The computer-regulated device provides cycles of varying degrees of subtle pulling, followed by relaxation. Each cycle gradually and gently stretches the spine and then relaxes it, initiating a negative pressure inside the spinal disc.

This negative pressure creates a suction, or a vacuum effect.

It causes water, nutrients, and disc material to be sucked back toward the center of the disc and off the nerves, thus relieving pain and enhancing proper healing.

“The procedure is extremely comfortable,” Dr. Donath says.

“Most patients enjoy it, and many even fall asleep.”

Dr. Donath also treats joint pain, arthritis, headaches, pain during pregnancy, sports-related injuries, chronic muscle tightness and other musculoskeletal conditions.

“It’s my mission to provide not only relief for my patients but to solve the underlying cause of their conditions,” he says.

Dr. Donath graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, and was class valedictorian.

Dr. Donath also has a Master’s degree in human nutrition. He is a frequent lecturer at Jacobi Medical Center in New York City and serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the School of Medicine at New York Medical College.

Good skin care — including sun protection and gentle cleansing — can keep your skin healthy and glowing for years to come.

Don't have time for intensive skin care?

You can still pamper yourself by acing the basics. Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems.

Get started with these 5 no-nonsense tips.

1. Protect yourself from the sun One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer.

For the most complete sun protection:

• Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or perspiring.

• Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest.

• Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and widebrimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

3. Treat your skin gently

Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health.

Smoking also damages collagen and elastin — the fibers that give your skin strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles.

If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit.

Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking.

• Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers.

Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin. To keep it gentle:

• Limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower time, and use warm — rather than hot — water.

• Shave carefully. To protect and lubricate your skin, apply shaving cream, lotion or gel before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it.

• Pat dry. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin.

• Moisturize dry skin. If your skin is dry, use a moisturizer that fits your skin type. For daily use, consider a moisturizer that contains SPF.

4. Eat a healthy diet A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. The association between diet and acne isn't clear — but some research suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.

5. Manage stress Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. Set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The results might be more dramatic than you expect.

of underwater wellness

An exciting new way to get fit has hit local shores.

It’s known as AquaCycling, and it merges a spin-class aerobic workout with an exercise session for the back, legs and upper body that can burn over 700 calories an hour - all done in the cool, relaxing water of a pool.

“It’s popular in Europe, where community pools are quite common, and now it’s taking off in the U.S., says Kristina Georges, marketing and communications director for Aqua Wellness World, which holds AquaCycling classes at the Carver Center pool in Port Chester.

Maryline & Laurent Bouhier introduced AquaCycling at their gym on the Caribbean island of St. Bart’s in 2008.

They later brought it to New York, and Laurent is now CEO of Aqua Wellness World, which sells patented AquaCycling equipment and supplies.

Maryline, a Master Coach with 20 years of experience, teaches the water workout classes at the Carver Center in Port Chester, one of just a handful of AquaCycling facilities in the metro area.

During a one-hour AquaCycling class, riders work out on the bikes – they’re attached to the pool bottom with suction cups and can be removed between classes – submerged to waist level.

Participants pedal and push against the natural resistance of the water, coached by the instructor, with music to keep up the momentum. Arm exercises are added for a muscle-toning boost. Each class is customized to meet individual needs and preferences.

“It’s a great heart-healthy cardio workout, plus you get the muscular benefits, and there’s no impact on the joints,” Georges says. AquaCycling was, in fact, originally used as a form of rehab in physical therapy.

Aqua Wellness World has hosted American Heart Association fundraisers such as “Wear Red to AquaCycle” events. In March, more than 60 people joined in the event in Port Chester.

Class members are usually anywhere in age from teens and on up.

“Our oldest participant is 84,” says Georges.

Aqua Wellness World launched AquaCycling classes two years ago, and now it’s introducing the concept of aqua training.

Georges notes that aqua training doesn’t mean just bouncing around in a pool, or swimming laps for fitness – it’s a new idea called Aqua Gym. This summer, two Aqua Gym programs, known as AquaHiit – for “high-intensity interval training” - will be held in the Carver Center pool.

Up to 10 people in each class will take part in a circuit of supervised exercise on various pieces of aqua workout equipment – it even includes an underwater treadmill and mini trampoline.

“We’re also introducing an AquaDynamic class; it’s a group program set to music that will emphasize strength-building moves using the resistance of the water,” says Georges.

Don't overdo it. Prevent injuries.

Stay cool Sun protection is important all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. Take steps to help prevent skin cancer and other conditions. Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet many people succumb to extreme heat each year.

Lower your risk for heat-related illness.

Tips When possible, avoid outdoor activities during midday, when the sun's rays are strongest.

Cover up with clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect exposed skin.

Drink plenty of cool, non-alcoholic fluids.Seek shade.

Wear sunscreen and lip screen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.

Watch the water According to several studies, males are three times more likely than females to die from unintentional drownings in the United States. Alcohol use is involved in up to half of adolescent and adult deaths associated with water recreation.

Tips: Learn how to swim. Never swim alone.

Wear your life jacket while boating.

Avoid alcoholic beverages while boating.

Watch children in and around water.

If you have a swimming pool at your home, install a four-sided isolation pool fence.

Eat healthy Whether you plan to grill on the patio or picnic in the park, be sure to eat balanced meals with fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables have important vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may protect you from some chronic diseases. Foodborne disease is caused by consuming contaminated foods or beverages. An estimated 76 million cases of foodborne disease occur each year in the United States. Most of these cases are mild and cause symptoms for a day or two, but some cases are more serious and require hospitalization.

Tips: Eat plenty fruits and vegetables daily.

Wash your hands before eating or preparing food.

Cook all foods to the proper temperatures.

Refrigerate foods promptly.

Despite popular belief, teens, children, and even babies, can have high blood pressure, also called HBP or hypertension. It's not just a disease for the middleaged and elderly. As with adults, early diagnosis and treatment can reduce or prevent harmful consequences like heart and kidney disease—even stroke. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association encourages parents to prevent high blood pressure in children with healthy lifestyle choices started at a young age.

The number of American children with high blood pressure is on the rise, and about 1 in 6 children ages 8-17 years already has raised blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure during childhood can help lower the risk for high blood pressure as an adult.

When it comes to blood pressure in children, "normal" is relative. It depends on three factors: gender, age and height. Doctors can guide parents on what is a healthy number in their child. As in adults, HBP in children is typically managed with lifestyle

changes like enjoying a hearthealthy diet, participating in regular physical activity, and managing weight. The doctor may also prescribe medication if an appropriate diet and regular physical activity don't bring high blood pressure under control.

What causes HBP in children?

There may be many factors including diseases including heart and kidney disease, some medications, family history, diet, excess weight or obesity, or race, particularly for African-American children.

Eating too much sodium is associated with higher blood pressure in children and teens, and the effect is even greater if they’re overweight or obese. Kids with high-sodium diets are almost 40 percent more likely to have elevated blood pressure than kids with lower-sodium diets.

The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg of sodium a day for all Americans for ideal heart health. On average, kids ages 2-19 eat more than 3,100 mg sodium per day, about double the amount the American

Heart Association recommends.

In the 2-19 year-old age group for boys and girls, boys ages 1219 eat the most sodium — an average of 4,220 mg/day. Girls in the 12-19 year-old age group eat about 2,950 mg/day.

Taste preferences for salt are shaped by what kids eat early in life, according to the AHA. From an early age, parents should avoid the “Salty Six” foods that add the most sodium to kids’ diets including pizza; bread and rolls; cold cuts and cured meats; packaged snacks; sandwiches; and cheese.

The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Luncheon and Health and Wellness Expo, entitled “Building Healthier Families,” was held on Wednesday, May 4th at the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa. More than 300 people, mostly women dressed in red, attended to learn more about heart disease and stroke prevention, and to support survivors.

This year’s keynote speaker was Connecticut-based David Katz, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACP, an internationally recognized authority on nutrition, weight management and the prevention of chronic disease. Katz asked the audience to raise their hand if they knew someone affected by heart disease, then another hand if they someone affected by stroke. Nearly everyone in the room raised their hands.

Katz told the audience that more than 80% of heart disease and stroke incidence could be prevented with their “feet, forks and fingers,” encouraging the crowd to make healthy lifestyle choices like exercising more, eating healthier and quitting smoking. He also spoke of the epidemic of childhood obesity and serious health consequences

“Is there anything more unconscionable than a stroke in a child?” said Katz to a stunned audience when he presented statistics showing stroke on the rise in children and young adults.

May is American Stroke Month and the audience was reminded to learn the F.A.S.T. stroke symptoms by Lauren Scala, NBC 4 New York traffic reporter, who served as event emcee.

“If you see F-Face drooping, A-Arm weakness or S-Speech difficulty, it’s T-Time to call 9-11 if any of these symptoms exist.”

Heart health breakout sessions were presented by Greenwich Hospital and Stamford Health where women were provided with the tools, resources and inspiration to prevent women’s number one killer—heart disease.

Several local women were featured in two videos shown at the event. All are survivors or either heart disease or stroke. Selina Santos, of Wilton, was diagnosed with high blood pressure and aortic insufficiency at age 34. She visited doctors who diagnosed her

constant headaches and shortness of breath to be stress-related, and told her to lighten her work load.

When she was finally diagnosed with aortic insufficiency, leakage of the aortic valve, her doctor gave her a choice of “lifestyle change or surgery,” she chose lifestyle change and is now a spin-class instructor.

“It’s been my mission to create a healthier lifestyle for others,” she said.

Her message to other women, even young women is to “not ignore the signs! What may seem like stress may be an underlying cause of a more serious issue. Put yourself first—it is not selfish, it’s necessary!”

Cindy King of Stamford, a heart attack survivor, was also featured in the video. Patty Macias, of New Rochelle, survived pulmonary embolism because her sister recognized heart attack symptoms early and got her to the emergency room quickly. Massalla Samuel, Elmsford, and Beverly Paige of Pomona, were two stroke survivors featured in the films. They both survived and thrived—graduating top of their classes in college.

Martha Glantz of Mount Kisco, had a heart attack at a Super Bowl party. She thought she had indigestion. But when it got worse and dizziness set in, she knew she needed to go to the hospital. “I always thought heart disease only happened to men. I want all women to know it can happen to you,” said Glantz.

Migraine consequences affect all family members Healthcare News - Fairfield County June, 2016

New findings validate profound effect on relationships, parenting and financial security

The debilitating pain and disability of migraine also attacks the emotional, social and financial fabric of a family, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Montefiore Headache Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, affiliated with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Vedanta Research, the Mayo Clinic and Allergan plc. The findings were published today in Volume 91, Issue 5 of Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

The Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) Study surveyed 4,022 people with migraine as well as their spouses or domestic partners to gain a full picture of the effect of migraine on the family. Approximately 41% of people with migraine and 23% of spouses stated that they believed those impacted by migraine would be better parents if they did not have migraine, which consequently led to half of migraineurs missing at least one family activity in the past month. Approximately one-third of people with migraine and 21% of their spouses/partners endorsed worries about long-term financial security for their family due to migraine. Perceived burden was the greatest among people with chronic migraine (migraine with headache on 15 or more days per month) and among those with more frequent attacks.

“This study highlights the significant burden that migraine can have on a wide range of family activities, parenting responsibilities, spousal relationships and family finances,” said study lead author Dawn C. Buse, Ph.D., director of Behavioral Medicine, Montefiore Headache Center and associate professor of neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “Respondents with migraine and their partners noted a great deal of emotional distress related to how this condition affects their family member including guilt, worry and sadness. These findings underscore the challenges and negative impact that people with migraine and their family members’ experience.”

The CaMEO Study is a U.S. web-panel study that gathered information on the perceived impact of migraine—episodic or chronic-- on people with migraine, their partners and their children by surveying each of the three types of respondents from September 2012 to November 2013. As the study authors point out, an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to reducing the overall burden of migraine.

“The consequences of migraine can be devastating and far-reaching for people with migraine and their families,” said Richard B. Lipton, M.D., director of Montefiore Headache Center and vice chair of neurology, and the Edwin S. Lowe Chair in Neurology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “As a next step, we are analyzing responses from the children of those with migraine, who are 13 and older. We are also developing the “Impact of Migraine on Partners and Children Scale (IMPACS)” to help quantify the family burden of migraine.
