Emotional Eating is a scary topic especially for women. It’s hard to understand, but it always seems to be lurking within us.

Diets usually help us deal with what we eat, but rarely with the entire story.

Emotional eating is something we have taught ourselves that will bring comfort for the emotional things that we face in life. It allows us to take our minds off the pain and feel pleasure! Sounds like a great plan! In reality the feelings are temporary and come with weight gain and unhappiness.

Eating Emotionally is a learned habit that can be unlearned. The best thing is take a look at your eating triggers like stress, anxiety, sadness or even happiness and excitement. The best way to combat this is to make some lifestyle changes. Tracking your triggers and developing a strategy to reduce eating patterns you should eliminate. It may be a new gym or an exercise plan to eliminate stress.

This doesn’t mean anyone is perfect. A good emotional health is having the ability to experience all of your feelings, even when they are difficult and intense.

It is a process that involves learning to eat for health, but keeping your favorite foods in your life in moderation!

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center first Children’s Hospital in the Northeast to operate with newest and most advanced da Vinci Robot Surgical System Connecticut Children’s 1 of just 7 Children’s Hospitals in the Nation to utilize this equipment

The first hospital in Connecticut to perform robotic surgery on a child will soon be the first children’s hospital in the Northeast to have the most advanced robotic surgical system available for its pediatric patients.

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center is the only academic medical center in the region dedicated exclusively to the care of children. And thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the Diebold Foundation, Inc., Connecticut Children’s will soon be equipped with the da Vinci Robot Xi Surgical System. The Xi system will advance robotic surgery capabilities in Connecticut and beyond.

“Connecticut Children’s ability to obtain the Xi Robot will allow us to perform more complex surgeries with shorter surgical times,” said Christina Kim, MD, a pediatric urologist who is nationally and internationally recognized in the field of robotic surgery and serves as Director of Connecticut Children’s Robotic Surgery Program. “With this technology, we can expand utilization across many disciplines, including Urology, General Surgery, Gynecology, and Cardiovascular Surgery.”

Robotic technology allows surgeons to perform delicate, minimally invasive procedures with pinpoint accuracy, resulting in less pain, smaller scars and faster recovery times for patients. The new and improved Xi model will replace the da Vinci S Surgical System currently in use at Connecticut Children’s.

The American Heart Association (AHA) invites you to “lace up and go” to celebrate their annual National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 6th. According to the AHA, walking 30 minutes, or 150 minutes minimum weekly, can help prevent the number one and five killers, heart disease and stroke. National Walking Day is sponsored locally by New York-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital.

Why walk? Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for an individual’s overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. One in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963, and childhood obesity is now the top health concern among parents in the United States.

“Whether it’s walking, running, biking, playing sports or taking an exercise class, the goal is for adults to get at least 150 minutes per week of exercise, while kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical

activity per day. We hope residents walk on National Walking Day, and continue walking every day for heart health,” said Carolyn Torella, AHA spokesperson, “The Hudson Valley has so many amazing outdoor options for walking, biking, running or playing sports. Lace up and go!”

By now, it shouldn’t be a secret that there are specific proteins, enzymes and other coding within our bodies that can be activated to stop cancer cells dead in their tracks. Every day, more and more people (including doctors and scientists) are learning about the powers of specific foods and the role they play in our diet to both prevent and fight diseases. When it comes to cancer – which is such a widespread problem, so it naturally garners more attention – there are certain foods and compounds contained within certain foods that are thought to destroy cancer cells, along with having numerous other health benefits. Below are 10 of the most functional foods in the world that destroy cancer cells.

1: Grapes and Resveratrol (found in Wine) Resveratrol, the powerful ingredient found in grapes and wine, is an extremely powerful antioxidant. It is known for its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase-2 (CoX-2) production, which is related to cancers and other types of non-malignant tumors/growths in the intestinal tract. Organically-occurring CoX-2 inhibitors such as resveratrol have been shown to decrease the incidence of cancer along with pre-cancerous growths. So maybe that extra glass of wine isn’t so bad after all!

2: Sea Vegetables If you’ve never had an interest in sampling one of the many vegetables found in the sea, you might want to think about giving them a try. Sea vegetables such as Nori, Arame, Kombu and Wakame are examples of sea vegetables that can help fight cancer. These tasty sea vegetables contain a variety of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that will help prevent and reverse the damage done by foods and other factors that cause inflammation and oxidative stress – two known contributing factors to many types of cancers.

3: Garlic A study published online in the journal Cancer Prevention Research details how garlic has been used since around 2000 BC in ancient Chinese medicine.

The study suggests that a compound found in garlic called diallyl sulfide is one of the key ingredients in garlic that gives it cancer-fighting powers. Another compound found in garlic called Allicin is considered to be one of the most powerful antioxidants known to man.

Powerful antioxidants – along with having many other health benefits – are though to be a contributing factor in the destruction of certain types of cancers.

4: Green Tea Green tea owes its cancer-destroying abilities to a group of plant flavonoids it contains known as catechins. One of these catechins – epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) – has been shown to create a process that disrupts the ability of inflammatory chemicals to bind to the cells of smooth muscle tissues found within the vascular system. This is a critical function of the catechin, because the same process is known to disrupt the development of cancer cells.

5: Turmeric (spice) The prized ingredient in the spice Turmeric is Curcumin, and it is typically found in most Indian dishes. Curcumin is considered to be an extremely powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that reduces the metastases of tumors and thus can destroy cancer cells, along with preventing the growth and spread of cancer cells in the first place. A popular research study at Johns Hopkins reviewed and summarized over 700 studies on Turmeric and concluded that it outperforms many pharmaceutical drugs in its effects on a number of chronic diseases – and does so without almost zero side effects.

6: Cruciferous Vegetables Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, arugula, cabbage, cauliflower and kale (to name just a few) contain organic chemical compounds known as glucosinolates.

Apart from being extremely high in a number of important vitamins, minerals and enzymes that our body craves on a daily basis, these cruciferous vegetables are known to create compounds (thanks to the glucosinolates) which can fight cancer. You may not love your veggies, but you should certainly try and make them a part of your daily diet!

7: Hempseed Oil Hemp oil is known to speed up the healing process throughout the body and also raise melatonin levels.

Melatonin has been shown to reduce or even completely stop the growth of certain types of cancers, so the extra production of it thanks to hemp oil is a great asset in your body’s fight against cancer. Hemp oil can be consumed through gel-caps or even directly out of the bottle.

8: Mushrooms There are over 50 different species of mushrooms that have anti-viral and anticancer effects which have been proven through numerous in-vitro and animal research studies. Mushrooms have been used for over 5,000 years in ancient and traditional medicines due to their powerful effects on a number of diseases and conditions – including cancer.

9: Ginger Certain compounds found within Ginger make it a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxdiant, which means it works to reduce the oxidative stress and inflammation that your body has to fight on a daily basis. Studies have shown that Ginger can reduce cancerous tumors by as much as 56% and have also shown it to be a more effective remedy than traditional medical treatments like chemotherapy in the case of certain types of cancers.

10: Tomatoes Tomatoes contain Lycopene, a compound known for its ability to destroy cancer cells. They can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress throughout the body and one study showed that inflammation was reduced by 30% from simply consuming 1 glass of fresh tomato juice per day for a month straight.

Greenwich Hospital has received the 2016 Women's Choice Award as one of America's Best Hospitals for Patient Safety for its exceptional efforts to foster a culture of safety. The award comes as the nation celebrates Patient Safety Awareness Week.

"This award is particularly gratifying because we continuously strive to create the safest patient experience," said Norman G. Roth, president of Greenwich Hospital. "Our commitment to a safe en-

vironment for patients and staff includes unit-based safety coaches, daily safety huddles with senior staff in attendance, and quality safety rounds lead by our leaders throughout all hospital departments."

Another safety initiative includes a video falls risk monitoring program, which has garnered national attention and reduced inpatient falls at Greenwich Hospital by 44 percent. In addition, all staff, physicians and volunteers have completed

"high reliability organization" training – used by the aviation and other high-risk industries - to create a culture of safety at the hospital.

Only four hospitals in Connecticut received the Women's Choice Award for Patient Safety.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.
