Introduction to the Theme Flight The Echo magazine club members launched this school year writing and drawing new creations about flight. We had a great semester working on our theme and exploring artistically all the options that it gave us. There are a variety of interpretations of this theme, and they are all creative and exciting.

We all had fun inspiring each other with new ideas! Thank you so much to the 19 contributors who made it possible for this issue to take off and soar above and beyond. We couldn’t have done it without you. It was really fun making the magazine and we hope you all enjoy it!

By the Water Nina Cohen-Perlmutter ’23 We just needed a break from it all. After spending days seeing the torn up faces of our loved ones, saddened by the not-so-recent diagnosis that has progressed over time, we needed to take a breath for once. Finally, we stepped outside, leaving the sorrow, anger, and confusion all in the house that once was a place full of laughter and excitement.

I walked down the icy sidewalks, stepping carefully so I wouldn’t slip. The winding road along the house was empty. I leaned on the blue Subaru, staring off into the water. It looked almost black in the darkness.

In the distance, a Christmas tree was lit up by dusty yellow Christmas lights in a run down barn, overlooking the water. Next to it, another barn was outlined with the same magical lights. We could see ripples distorting the image on the water.

The hushed sounds of the winds surrounded us and I shivered in my coat. We saw the houses along the pier, rooms lit up.

Eventually, we knew we had to go inside. So we left our carelessness by the water, along with the peaceful sound of our strange silence. We had to face our problems yet again.

Doors Nina Cohen-Perlmutter ’23 Doors are the transitions from one place to another.

On the other side of the door we find an infinite amount of possibilities. We find ourselves with the desire to escape, to be exposed to everything the world has to offer. The doors of our rooms can give us access to shelter and privacy. Entry can give us comfort with the ones we love, while exiting can bring us to adventure, escape, and happiness. Exiting can also be yearning to escape an uncomfortable environment.

Do you ever find yourself looking at the door of some unknown place, wondering what lies inside? On the other side of a door there can be a happy party, a dysfunctional family, lonely people, an elderly person, a young person, the aroma of a delectable dinner, a football game playing loudly on TV, or a loving family.

Doors separate us from the world and give it to us at the same time.

I take a step forward, then one more. And I´m falling. And then I see it: the truth. And immediately I want to forget. I close my eyes, it can't be true. I want to run away. Now their voices sound scared, not lying, not true. They were afraid. Maybe that was all they ever were. Afraid of it.

And I run, but there is nowhere to go. How did I get here? I don´t know. I don't know anything anymore. And for the first time, I am afraid. I take a deep breath and I fly. But I don't fly forward, I fly back, back to my home.

So I fly, running away from the truth.

Contributors Duncan Beirne … My drawing is the MiG-25, the jet that terrified the west. It was a feared fighterinterceptor with the purpose of destroying x-b70 Valkyrie Bombers coming into the Soviet Union. It flew higher and faster than any other plane of its time, earning 29 world records in speed and height, most of which it still holds to date. But the truth (as found from the plane crashed in Japan by a Soviet deserter) was that the huge wings were not for extreme maneuverability, but they were needed to keep it flying, and as for the engines, they could only last for about 200 hours of flight. My drawing took hours of work as I tried to capture every detail of the aircraft by looking at pictures of the plane from all angles. Thank you, and enjoy the rest of the magazine!

Audrey Chuang … I have been experimenting with shading and highlights, so my drawings are anything I ended up with. I traveled to Florida during winter break, where I created the images "Golden," "City Nights," and "Above The Clouds."

Nina Cohen-Perlmutter … I wanted to do something different from what I have submitted to past Echos and focus more on photography to branch out. My doors series is in Kennebunkport, Maine, and I focused on beautiful doors around the neighborhood. I hope you enjoy my photos!

Mimi Craddick … I like dragonflies, and I doodle them in my free time.

Ariel Duan … My inspiration for this piece was images of butterflies online. Each showed an intricate and beautiful butterfly, but I realized that many of the pictures of the same species looked identical. That led me to make an artwork where the butterflies had a similar color palette but had specific differences.

Nebiyou Elias … My love of abstract art inspired my painting. I love creating wild pieces of art, spraying paint all over the place, and seeing where it went. I got this idea when I was scrolling through YouTube, and someone had a can of paint with holes, and it spun in circles. My father inspired my photographs because he is a photographer. I had the idea to take pictures (stopping time) with the shutter speed turned up.

Perin Fine … We did a project in English class where we wrote some haikus based on a book we read. I decided to publish these few in Echo.

Brynn Franklin … I chose to draw a hummingbird because I love that they are a beautiful, unique species.

Elise Goodman … My poems are the first things that came to mind when I thought about flight. I hope you like them!

Evan Griffith-Ebrahimi … My poems are inspired by the words "running from the truth" or flying away from it. I also drew inspiration from taking long walks in the woods with my dog.

Fiona Holland … My drawing was partially the first thing that came to mind and partly a representation of what I was feeling at the time.

Owen Huang … I was inspired by the perseverance and drive of NASA astronauts and engineers in solving many of the space shuttle's tragic faults, working hard to find solutions through the Challenger and Columbia shuttle disasters.

Sophie Jean … I drew the picture of the birds and the feather because I admired how a small thing like a feather can be part of a big thing like a bird.

Eike Kiecza … When I created my art, I thought about the expression "time flies."

Alden Largay … I had no clue what to do, and I decided to draw and paint this for fun. I wasn't going to put it in, but I decided, "Why not?"

Julianna Li and Sunday Mitzenmacher … We both knew that we wanted to work together on an art piece because we both enjoy art and thought that our styles would look nice together. Our art is inspired by a popular story that was going around the internet.

Sahana Miduturu … All of my poems and drawings explore the different ways of flight. I didn't just look at flight literally, but also emotionally and mentally. I tried my best to show various expressions of flight.

Tadhg O’Sullivan … I love to draw (airplanes in particular), so I am very interested in the “Flight” theme.

I have submitted an array of different designs relating to flight with a few other drawings, and I hope you find them interesting.

Kamila Ruiz … “Dreaming with the Girl” is about the feeling of anxiety and how you try so hard to block out every noise and person but get them stuck in your head. Others say you’re shy, but the hidden truth is anxiety. I chose to draw this to express these feelings. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed can lead to doing things you regret or shouldn’t do. As this drawing proves, Overthinking can affect your life, and I wanted others to see this in the drawing.

Petros Samuel … I made these drawings because these are things that can come in the near future, and they represent something like symbols. Drawings always have meanings. I love drawing for fun and hope to become better at art.

Eleanor Stine … My favorite thing about writing is to express my feelings. I am inspired by the work of others and my hobby as a designer, which led me to create a fairy. My two written pieces, "What We Used to Do" and "The 17 Haikus for the 4 Seasons," were inspired by a fellow student’s piece and my desire to explore the world of poetry.

Grace Sullivan … Writing and drawing are ways for me to escape from reality and to make things that haven't yet been created.

Clive Sutton … In late 2021, I had a strange obsession with tanks. I do not know why, and how I got into them, but I would draw them all of the time. Most of them did not have any color, as I would get distracted with something else and then didn't have the time to finish them. I was really into tanks from mid-July, all the way up to late December. You might be asking "What do tanks have to do with flying?!"

Well, all my tanks have jet engines and stuff so they can fly. I hope everyone enjoys my drawings.

Quincy Triesman … Creating is my way to relax. My inspiration for all my art is letting go, and with the theme Flight, it made it even easier to create.

Annika Vittal … I love this quote and think it goes perfectly with the theme. After all, at BDS we all soar.
