Selectmen Discuss Municipal Projects written by Lynn S. Ulsh, Bulletin Reporter The Bellingham Board of Selectmen met on September 26 to approve various municipal projects and local permits.

First, representatives from Volta Oil, which owns the Rapid Refill gas station on Route 140 at Maple Street, were given permission to add an additional diesel pump in the rear of the property near the existing pump. The existing storage tanks would be sufficient to fuel this pump.

The pump was deemed necessary because there is no other diesel pump open nearby in the mornings; therefore, a large queue of idling trucks waits at the one pump. The resulting truck fumes and noise disturb the neighborhood and create a backup in the parking lot. Selectman Jerry Mayhew commented that the more quickly those trucks get in and out, the more the idling time will be reduced.

Selectman Don Martinis, who had attended the Planning Board meeting where the project was discussed, noted that both the Planning Board and the Fire Department had approved the plans.

Additionally, the Board approved four new “No Jake Brake” signs to be erected along Maple Street. Jake Brakes allow trucks to slow down by opening exhaust valves, which saves wear and tear on the truck’s brake pads; however, the resulting

noise can be too loud for a residential area.

The board also approved a street light on Blackstone Street across from the old stone bridge.

Town Administrator Denis Fraine announced that the low bid of $1,041,640 had been awarded for the demolition of the dam at the former Pearl Street Mill, to be funded by a zero percent interest loan. There will no longer be a pond there; instead, the water flow will be more “river-like.”

Fraine noted that along the water there will be gree, park-like conservation grounds.

The Selectmen also fixed a problem with the trash bills. The lifeline rate for low-income residents had been the same as the senior rate.

However, when the various rates were increased earlier this year, an exception had been made for the senior rate but no mention had been made about the lifeline rate at that time. Therefore, the lifeline rate was increased along with the regular rates and the bills almost doubled, according to Fraine. The correction was made to the accounts and those customers will see a credit for the overpayment on their next bills.

Finally, Fraine announced a successful contract negotiation with the Police Association with concessions made by both sides, resulting in a newly ratified three-year contract that includes an annual 2% pay increase.

Tour of Police Station

The organization’s October meeting offered members a tour of the newly built Bellingham police station, along with an update from both the fire- and police-department chiefs. After enjoying a great meal in the police station’s meeting room that featured tuna sashimi, Caesar salad, and an entree of steak and mashed potatoes, followed by chocolate fudge cake for dessert, members received updates from Fire Chief Steven Gentile and Police Chief Gerard Daigle Jr. According to Fire Chief Gentile, the fire departBBA—continued on next page

ment has streamlined the fire alarm inspection process, to the delight of many business owners.

He spoke of opening the south fire station and the need for additional equipment there, as well as traffic problems at rush hour that prevent firefighters from getting the engine out of the bay.

Both the fire and police departments mentioned dealing with opioid addiction. There have been 25 overdoses in Bellingham since June, and that’s just the number of Bellingham residents—that does not include those from elsewhere who have OD’d at public places in town.

Chief Gentile spoke about the number of lives that have been saved because they can now administer the drug Naloxone (better known as Narcan), which counters the effects of a heroin overdose. He noted, however, that it is a “double-edged sword.” “They [addicts] know we have it and they know we’ll use it to bring them back, so there’s not much incentive for them to stop using. The problem is, it [Naloxone] doesn’t always work—it depends on the situation, so you’re still playing Russian roulette.”

Chief Daigle noted that, with so many state hospitals having been closed, there are not many resources for the police to utilize when they are dealing with people who have mental health issues.

Chief Daigle then escorted the group through the state-of-the-art police station, which was completed approximately a year ago, noting that it took 16 years to finally get the 13,750 sq. ft. station built.

Animals such as deer tend to migrate in the fall, and collisions with them increase by over 50% during that period. Last year our agency took four (4) deer-collision claims in a single day in November. One of my friends suffered nearly $10,000 in damages to his new Jeep when a deer jumped right in front of him. Deer tend to migrate at dawn and dusk and in groups.

So, if you see one deer on or near the edge of the road, assume that there are others about to leap your way. And how about all of those wild turkeys? Bellingham Women of Today To Host 29th Annual Telethon

The Bellingham Women of Today have begun preparations for their 29th annual Santa’s Elves Holiday Telethon. Plans are underway for a very entertaining program on Tuesday, Dec. 6, beginning at 7 pm, at the ABMI Cable studio, 10 William Way in Bellingham.

The telethon is held every year to raise funds and collect toys to aid hundreds of local families in need during the holiday season through the St. Blaise Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry’s Adopt-a-Family program and a local homeless shelter.

Thanks to the generosity of many businesses and individuals, over 300 children and their families were helped through the BWOT Santa’s Elves program last year.

The show is hosted by Linda Trudeau and members of the BWOT, and special guests, including Santa, will be on hand to take phone calls from children via the Santa phone line. The phone number will be an-

nounced during the telecast. While Santa is on camera, Mrs. Clause or an elf will be available.

The BWOT are booking now for adult and children’s talent acts and performers to appear during the show. Musicians, dancers, singers, puppets, and martial arts demos are just an example of possible entertainment. BHS Field Hockey Is Improving

The BHS field hockey team has won a pair of games, both shutouts of Hull, and has two ties, one against Blackstone-Millville and the other against Ashland. Last year’s team was unable to win a game.

Coach Aly Thibault credits much of the squad’s improvement to its four captains ‚Äî Rhea Beera, Brooke Dennison, Sophia Mitrano and Kerrianne Fagan. “Brooke and Rhea are leading the team as defenders,” Thibault said. “They’re great at clearing the ball out of our circle and pushing it upfield. Sophia and Kerrianne have transitioned from defense to midfielders and have helped to generate more offense. They did a great job getting the team involved in the off-season to improve our skills. They’ve been great leaders who push hard and don’t give up.”

Other keys, according to Thibault, have been Jess Kilduff, Becky Tynan, Kelly Henderson and Courtney Lindeman. “Jess has been an asset on our left side, applying pressure on opposing teams and bringing the ball up the entire length of the field on the weak side,” said Thibault. “Becky, Kelly and Courtney work hard to lead our offensive attack. Each has heart and drive, always aiming to be better.”
