Dog License Reminder Issued

Bellingham Town Clerk Ann Odabashian reminds residents to license or renew your dog’s license for the 2015 year by July 1 to avoid a $20 late fee. According to state law, after Aug. 1, a citation will be issued for $50; (the second will be for $60 and the third, $100). Spayed/neutered dogs are $15 per dog; non-spayed/neutered dogs are $20.

Mendon Promotes Rain Barrel Water Conservation Program

The Mendon Highway Dept. has once again partnered with the Great American Rain Barrel Company to offer rain barrels to residents of Mendon and surrounding towns as part of a community-wide water conservation program.

Water shortage is a growing global concern. In New England, residential water usage can increase as much as 60% during the spring, summer and fall seasons from outdoor watering needs such as watering gardens and lawns, filling pools and washing cars.

Barrels can offset that usage, saving homeowners money and helping the community manage water supplies.

Rain barrels can also reduce runoff. In watershed areas, runoff from homes and developments can harm existing water sources because overtaxed storm sewers discharge polluted runoff. Over time, this takes a toll on the fragile aquatic ecosystem that the area is dependent upon.

More and more communities nationwide, like Mendon, are bringing

large scale programs to their towns, encouraging more residents to conserve water but also helping their town mitigate pollution in the water supplies on a larger scale.

The specs for the barrels: 60 gallons, stands 39" tall x 24" wide, weighs 20 lbs. empty, food grade, UV protected, firm wide mouth, screw top lid, mosquito screen, 2 x 3/4" overflow valves, threaded plastic spigot and choice of two port locations to place spigot, highly durable 3/16" polyethylene.

Homeowners can easily connect the barrels to their downspouts and significantly offset their watering needs.

In this region, there is typically 16" of rain May 1—Sept. 30. For every inch of rainfall, a 1,000 sq. ft. surface can collect 620 gallons of water; that means that over the course of the extended summer months, an average roof of 2,400 square feet could see more than 20,000 gallons of fresh rainwater passing over its surface, a significant

At the April 28 School Committee meeting Curriculum Director Matt Bolduc and School Committee member Jennifer Altemonte unveiled plans for a new question-and-answer forum on You Tube to answer frequently asked questions. The site will feature administrators and staff members filmed in 4- to 5-minute clips answering questions regarding district news, policies, and general information.

Altemonte said that this new feature will not only place a face with the name of Bellingham personnel but will also allow busy parents to log on at their convenience to find the answers they need without waiting to call during business hours or attending a meeting. The site will be accessed through the district website.

Bolduc noted that once the site gets up and running they would like to involve students in the filming and production of the videos.

Superintendent Edward Fleury formally introduced new Bellingham High School Principal Lucas Giguere to the district. Giguere has been a principal and vice principal at a middle school and high school in Franklin. He will begin his tenure at BHS on July 1, when current BHS Principal Peter Morano takes over as Superintendent for Fleury, who is retiring.

Giguere expressed his excitement about beginning his new post. He said that he has several visits planned to begin to establish relationships with staff and students in order to create an atmosphere of trust and credibility.

Mendon is offering the Great American Rain Barrel for $79 (versus the retail price of $119). Residents also have the option of purchasing a small

diverter for $20, or a large diverter for $25. The barrels come in three colors: Forest Green, Earth Brown or Nantucket Gray. Bank Makes $2,500 Donation to Taft Library

Charles River Bank is proud to make a substantial donation to the Friends of Taft Library that will support the relocation and expansion of the library. In recognition of the $2,500 donation, the Information Desk on the Lower Level will be named for Charles River Bank. The new Taft Library is located in the former St. Michael’s Church at 29 North Ave in Mendon.

The Selectmen heard an update from Chief Gerard Daigle regarding the completion and opening of the new police station on Blackstone Street.

According to Daigle, the project is expected to be both on-time and on-budget. The transition will begin on June 7 and will continue gradually over the following month. Chief Daigle expects to be moved in prior to July 4. Plans for a Grand Opening celebration are tentatively set for Saturday, July 11.

The Chief described the nearly completed project as “a building to be proud of... a great thing for the town and its officers.”

The Bellingham High boys lacrosse team had a 4-10 record after 14 matches, but, as coach Tyler Smith said, “We’re playing well as a team.”

Smith admires the play of Eric Cote (goalie) and attackman Paul Dwelly.

“Cote has 240 saves and is on the verge of topping last year’s total of 257,” Smith said. “Dwelly is the hardest working player I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach. He leads the team in points and ground balls. We also have some ‘glue guys’ like Will Schmith and John Howard. They’ll go all out to get a win.”

Smith also likes the work of a pair of freshmen. “Jake Prophet and Jared Vitale play vital minutes and do more than just blend in,” Smith said. “Vitale has two goals, and Prophet isn’t afraid to throw his body around and get dirty. Our defense also has played well and is still improving. They’re the core of the team, led by Sean Russell and Kalvin Cho. Other defenders include George Pearson III, Brendan Flaherty, Thomas Conroy, Mike Pillot, and Lyall Chambers.
