Perhaps there was an atmosphere of judgment. Perhaps members were jealous of each other and expressed those feelings by being critical of someone’s beginning efforts to express themselves.

Regardless of past circumstances people may have experienced, local authors and Bellingham residents Marjorie Turner Hollman and Amy Bartelloni wanted to offer a group in which people would feel safe to experiment, to see if they were able to break through barriers that were keeping them from writing. Hollman is the author of many personal histories and local walking books, and Amy Bartelloni has authored a number of dystopian novels in a young adult series.

The group will meet at the Bellingham Public Library on the second Monday of every month at 6:30 pm, unless there is a holiday; in that case, it will be rescheduled to the following Monday. All types of writing are invited—fiction, non-fiction, or poetry. The ground rules were offered at the beginning of the first meeting—no politics, no gratuitous violence, and please keep erotica at home. Positive comments only are welcome, and only if desired, after each person has shared their writing.

At this first meeting, participants hurried in and settled around tables in the middle of the community room. After getting briefly acquainted with each other, we started with an invitation to simply write for the

first ten minutes. Some people had brought writing, but others had brought nothing to share. While participants are invited to attend simply to listen, we wanted to offer everyone a chance to share some writing if they wanted to. The first topic? “First day of class.”

A number of people in the group talked about feeling inadequate, that only people who were English majors could write. They soon learned, however, that very few of us majored in English in college. They also learned that the most important requirement in being a writer is to start writing!

By the end of the first meeting every member had, indeed, shared something they’d written. We heard poetry, one with the standard rhyming scheme; another, free verse. Another member offered a poignant reflection on a marriage gone wrong, while yet another shared sharp dialogue in a brief story; yet another invited us into his world of growing up in the 60s and 70s. Several people read their “first day of class” writing, and these were remarkable in the variety of feelings expressed.

Eight o’clock came much too soon, and we headed out, already looking forward to gathering again in June.

This is a group for adults, and signups are requested for writers who want to share their writing. Those who simply would like to listen to what local writers are working on are welcome to attend as well. See you at the library on Monday, June 12, at 6:30 pm.

The Bellingham High boys track team, which has a 2-3 record, is getting high-octane efforts from four top-notch competitors: Alex Carr (800, mile), Conor Fitzgerald (hurdles, javelin), Josh Jones (shot put, discus) and Jared Steinbrecher (two-mile).

Carr, a co-captain who’ll be enrolled at Ohio State in the fall, has placed first in both the 800 and the mile, and Steinbrecher, the other captain, also has scored consistently in the two-mile event.

“We’ve reached a few of our goals and as far as changing the culture goes, we’re moving in the right direction,” said Linehan, who founded the youth lacrosse league in Bellingham. “Opposing coaches have told us they see a difference in the way we’re competing.”

Some of the players who’ve worked hard and are striving to elevate the program include goalie George Makrin, midfielders Jake Prophet, Robidoux and Flynn, and defensemen Lyall Chambers and Kenny Morrissey.

“George plays a difficult position and has taken some tough shots,” Linehan said, “but he’s filled the role and played admirably, and he’s remained positive. Jake can play defense and he even played in goal briefly. He’s a good two-way player and one of our best athletes. Mic is well-skilled and has given us a lift on offense. Lyall and Kenny have stabilized our defense. We’re starting to recognize and understand the defensive concepts of lacrosse.”

Spring is here: now it's time to dust off our shorts and t-shirts and start thinking about summer. For seniors, it’s almost time to toss that graduation cap into the air—but not before Prom! Ah, the memories of spiffy bow ties, elegant dresses and sleek limousines; prom is the event of the year.

If only there were a way to relive those fun times.

And now there is. The Bellingham High School Student Council is hosting a... (wait for it)... Senior

Prom, complete with live music, dancing, a pasta meal, and the naming of a prom king and queen.

The BHS Student Council is hoping to share prom nostalgia with members of our elderly community.

installing a new gas tank or utilizing a municipal card program through the state of Massachusetts to fill municipal cars and small trucks at local gas stations. The vehicles using the DPW gas tanks include police cruisers and small cars and trucks used for municipal and school purposes.

The DPW has an above-ground diesel tank used for larger trucks. That tank is functioning and will remain on the DPW site.

DiMartino reported that the cost of using a state card program is essentially equal to operating their own tank at the DPW. The state card program would issue a gas card for use at Gulf locations, of which Cumberland Farms—”Cumbies”—is a subsidiary. Bellingham has Cumberland Farms service stations on both the north and south ends of town. Each municipal vehicle would have its own card, which would have authorization only for gas fill-up and not for purchases in the store.

The Board of Selectmen agreed to try the state card program once the current gas supply in the tank is used and authorized the removal of the tank at that time. Selectmen Chairperson Mike Soter said that the question of building a new DPW facility will be addressed in the next few years. Therefore, installing a new underground gas tank now would not be advisable.

public meeting with Trudel’s Auction Gallery, which had received a $500 fine for not following the town bylaws for second-hand dealers. These by-laws were updated in the past few years to prevent people from bringing stolen goods into consignment shops or second-hand dealers.

Guy Trudel explained that the gallery is not a consignment shop, but a state-licensed auction house. Auction house personnel must pass a course and abide by state guidelines, or risk losing that license. He noted that their business does not take small numbers of items from people coming in off the street for sale in the facility. Rather, they go out to estates and assess antiques for auction. They obtain direct ownership of antique merchandise on site following proper state procedures.

Selectman Don Martinis said that the town has had no problems or violations from Trudel’s in its 15 years in Bellingham. The Board agreed that if the state has certain legal procedures set in place for auction houses, the town by-laws for reporting should reflect that and differentiate between auction houses and consignment shops. They therefore waived the fine.

Uno’s Granted Entertainment License

Representatives from Pizzeria Uno’s applied for and received an entertainment license for an acoustic guitar player on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 pm to midnight.
