is adjacent to several homes. Swirling explained that the plans call for the installation of safe and efficient lighting under the canopy covering the self-service pumps and at the store entrances.

He noted that only security lights would remain on during the overnight hours and that all fuel deliveries and dumpster pick-up would take place during the daytime.

Several abutting neighbors raised concerns regarding water runoff, possible underground tank leakage, the additional potential for crime, and noise and light overflow into their homes.

Lombardo noted that a 20-foot buffer is planned between the property and the abutting residences.

He explained that the plans meet or exceed safety regulations with a double-lined tank and vaporrecovery systems. Swirling said that modern gas stations are nothing like the old smelly gas pumps of 20 years ago. He further noted that most of the time the person pumping the gas cannot even smell any fumes.

Swirling said that the plans do not include the installation of bottle and can return machines.

Residents had expressed concerns over the people who walk up from another town to use the machines at the Hilltop Farms facility. He also noted that typically the outside sitting area is for daytime usage for coffee drinkers or people eating lunch and is not lighted at night.

CUMBERLAND FARMS—continued from page 4 The Selectmen asked Cumberland Farms to share the results of the land-contamination samples taken during the land-sale process. Cumberland Farms would clean up contaminants before moving ahead with the process.

Lombardo said that they are looking to begin the Planning Board process in the next two months and, if all goes well, to break ground this spring.

The Selectmen urged Cumberland Farms to work closely with the neighbors during the Planning Board approval process, noting the abutters’ concerns regarding water runoff, retention ponds and hours of operation. The Selectmen approve only the special permits for underground tanks and self-service pumps. The approvals for the construction plans, traffic patterns and site improvements all come from the Planning Board. Martinis noted that the site is zoned commercial and that something will go in that spot; he said that it is a positive sign that Cumberland Farms representatives are willing to work with the neighbors.

Also at this meeting Troop 100 Boy Scout Adam Misivk detailed his plans for an Eagle Scout project working with the Historical Society to erect three site markers. The 18" x18" aluminum markers will be located at Silver Lake, Rakeville Circle and Four Corners (near Rapid Refill) and will explain the historical significance of these areas. The Selectmen said that they fully support the project and encourage other scouts to add additional signs in the future.

The event was open to the public and was well attended. A short movie was shown, and refreshments were provided by Honey Dew Donuts, Dunkin’ Donuts of South Main Street, and the Big Y of Franklin.

Library Director Bernadette Rivard welcomed the crowd, and opening remarks were given by Jim Hastings of the Memorial Day and Veterans Day Committee. Mr. Hastings is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, who said you couldn’t find a finer group anywhere than the U.S. Military. He urged those in attendance to thank a veteran and to take time to visit those vets in nursing homes and hear their stories.

Hastings introduced a lineup of speakers, including Captain Maura Stevens of the U.S. Army Nursing Corps, a former Army Captain who served in the Army Nurse Corps specializing in mental health nursing.

While he said all veterans are owed our thanks, he praised the veterans of World War 2, known as the greatest generation, and believes we owe them one last tribute. He praised the courage of all veterans, who know what is in store for them when they enlist and don’t hesitate to jump into the fray, something that has been a constant theme in the U.S. military.

Vets’ Stories Theme of Program at Bellingham Library written by Marjorie Turner Hollman Contributing Writer Veterans who have participated in the Bellingham/Mendon Veterans Oral History project and their families were invited to a program at the Bellingham Public Library November 1. In addition to the local veterans and interested family and other Bellingham residents, a number of guest speakers also attended, including people from around Eastern MA who have worked with veterans to help preserve their stories.

The producer of the project, Personal Historian Marjorie Turner Hollman, had invited her colleagues from the Association of Personal Historians (APH) to share their experiences working with veterans. Vietnam veteran, author, and long-time Personal Historian Mary O’Brien Tyrrell of Orleans (pictured above) began the program by sharing some of her experiences as a Navy nurse based in Guam during the Vietnam War. Tyrrell helped care for over 15,000 injured solders in her year in Guam. She shared several poems she had written (which have been published many times in wellknown magazines) on her journey of responding to the wounds of war inflicted on her and every veteran of the Vietnam War by our own country.

She offered words of advice for any who hope to encourage a veteran of the Vietnam War to talk about their experiences: “There’s a code, and we all know what it means. Say ‘Welcome home. Thank you for your service.’

None of us were thanked, and we were not welcomed home. Some of us were spat upon.”

Maureen Sullivan, Director of the Natick Veterans History Project, spoke briefly about the history of the program she runs, which provides the opportunity for any veteran to come to the Natick Library to record their stories of military life. The project in Natick is the model upon which the Library of Congress based their Veterans Oral History project. The stories recorded in Bellingham are being

archived at the Library of Congress.

Additional APH members then spoke about different ways they have helped document veterans’ stories.

Pam Pacelli of Arlington had made a documentary recounting the story of the Sullivans, five brothers who all died in WWII, and the ship that was named for them. Ellen Fishman of Chestnut Hill described her work with Holocaust victims and their families, both assisting them with material needs and recording their stories. Leslie Wittman of Bedford had helped with a veterans’ oral history project, recording veterans of WWII at an assisted-living facility in Bedford. And Leah Abrahams had edited several books of veterans’ stories, including a book of love letters sent home by a soldier who died during WWII. A number of veterans who had participated in this project here in Bellingham, along with their families, attended the program and shared a few stories. Some reflected on their military experiences; one recalled greeting a husband who had missed the birth of their first child. Some stories were humorous, others less so, but all were heartfelt.

The program concluded with brief video clips from the 12 interviews that have been conducted so far. There were stories of military humor, the costs of war, and reflections on lessons learned. The project continues, and we look forward to preserving more veterans’ stories in the coming year. “I was so proud to be invited on the recent trip to the White House. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the YMCA and the Bellingham schools.

This experience has allowed me to form new partnerships which will help us meet the needs of our children,” she exclaimed. “Bellingham Schools have had a very productive partnership with the Hockomock YMCA over the past 5 years. Their support, through the Stop and Shop mini grants, have helped fund gardens at each of our schools and introduced a before-school physical activity component. The Y staff teach Nutrition Detectives at each elementary school, which has allowed us to be recognized as a “Healthier School,” a USDA program, that only 4% of all schools in the country achieve.”

Located in the White House South Lawn, the Kitchen Garden is home to different fruits, vegetables, and herbs each growing season. The First Lady planted the White House Kitchen Garden in 2009 to initiate a national conversation around the health and well-being of our nation and to serve as an inspiration for schools and community groups

across the country to plant gardens of their own.

The Let’s Move! program was launched by First RS# 3256 Lady Michelle Obama in 2010 and is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years.

Crooks Continues Lecture Series on History of Bellingham

written by Marjorie Turner Hollman, Contributing Writer A group gathered at the Bellingham Senior Center in late October to learn about Bellingham history, the theme of this meeting being “The Mills of Bellingham.” During the meeting we got into an animated discussion about handkerchiefs. Was this a detour from the original theme? Read on!

Marcia Crooks (pictured right), chairman of the Historical Commission and leader of the gathering, told us of the existence of a handkerchief factory located at Crooks Corner in south Bellingham. She explained that there was a store on Pulaski Boulevard where handkerchiefs were sold, with a factory behind the store that made these essential personal-care items of the time. “And God help you if you forgot your handkerchief when you went to school!” Crooks said. “You needed to have a clean, ironed handkerchief on the top of your desk every day, and we got inspected; you needed to have a clean handkerchief and clean fingernails.”

The talk about clean handkerchiefs prompted a discussion of wash days. Bellingham resident Pauline Gaudini recalled, “Clothes were washed every Monday, then dipped in starch and kept in the icebox to be ironed on Tuesday.” An Icebox, for those who don’t know the term, was an upright chest kept cold by large blocks of ice where you kept your food (and sometimes laundry!) cool. She said (referring to the tragic stories), “That could happen to me, especially today—kids are glued to their cell phones.”

According to their website, Kramer International’s objective is to use every method at its disposal to bring home the reality of the dangerous practice of distracted driving because it has eclipsed drunk driving as the number-one safety concern of the driving public. “We are committed to educating all individuals that attend this program about the dangers of this serious life-threatening practice, through the use of cutting-edge technology, video display, and live personal presentation and interaction.”

They routinely take this and their Alcohol Awareness Program to high schools, colleges and military bases.

After the program, I spoke with School Resource Officer Len Gosselin, who supplied additional information from the law-enforcement side.

“These kids all have junior operator’s

licenses (JOLs). They need to understand the consequences. It’s not just the Registry’s penalties (see below).

There could be multiple charges, including criminal charges, if there’s a fatality. Now you’re talking about jail time.”

“So far, Bellingham has been lucky.

We haven’t had any fatalities caused by texting and driving, and we’d like to keep it that way,” Gosselin concluded.

Bellingham COA Announces December News & Events Bellingham-GATRA Senior & Handicapped Transportation—If you are at least 60 years of age or a younger disabled resident, we provide rides in town and the surrounding area up to 10 miles. Our vans can even accommodate wheelchairs or riders that use canes or walkers. If you are requesting a ride for the first time, you will be screened for eligibility. While no fare is charged, suggested donations are gratefully accepted and used for transportation-related needs over and above the town’s budget. This is not a taxi service, but a shared ride that provides curb-to-curb service with advance notice of at least one day for local requests. Call the Center and one of our staff will take your reservation and confirm your information and ride arrangements. We can take you shopping, to the barber, doctor, and bank or for other errands, and even bring you to the Senior Center. Flyers with complete information are available by calling 508-966-0398.

BHS Seniors Win Powder Puff Football Crown written by by Ken Hamwey Bulletin Sports Editor Bellingham High’s senior girls rolled to a pair of victories on Oct. 29 and captured the title in the sixth annual Powder Puff football games, an event that has become one of the main fund-raising events for Operation Graduation—the all-night party at the high school designed to keep the graduates safe.

The seniors defeated the juniors in the championship final, 24-6. Earlier, the seniors qualified for the final by downing the sophomores, 24-0, and the juniors advanced by subduing the freshmen, 12-6.

Julianne Kilduff, Danielle Arcidiacono, Danielle Sarno and Joli Csizmesia scored for the seniors in the championship game.

Kilduff scored on a 40-yard run; Arcidiacono’s TD came on a 24-yard pass from Csizmesia; Sarno tallied on a 30-yard scamper; and Csizmesia ended the seniors’ offensive with a 10-yard run. The juniors’ touchdown came on a 10-yard pass by Meghan Cook to Kaitlynn Prophet.

In the seniors’ preliminary game, the quartet of Kilduff, Arcidiacono, Csizmesia and Sarno again scored all four touchdowns in their shutout of the sophomores.

The juniors downed the freshmen, thanks to Brianna Chamberlain’s 18-yard run and Kaitlynn Prophet’s 85-yard interception return. The freshmen’s only TD came on Kelly Corbitt’s 30-yard pass to Cailey MacGregor.

Shelly Bernardini and Debra Cook served as co-chairmen of the Powder Puff event. “We raised $653 from the games,” Bernardini said. “It’s a good time and it’s rewarding to see all the girls enjoy the competition. Operation Graduation is such a worthwhile endeavor because it keeps our children safe. After graduation exercises, the kids are in a drug- and alcohol-free setting. Last year, 98 percent of the senior class participated. I want to thank all the volunteers, the athletic department, the school administration and the businesses who helped make the event a success.”

Bilodeau to Lead BHS Girls Five

Stacy Bilodeau led the Walpole High girls basketball team to nine consecutive tournament berths and a Division 2 State Championship (2004) during her 11-year tenure as the Rebels’ head coach.

The 37-year-old mentor, who last year was an assistant at Wheaton College, decided to return to the high school ranks and will direct the Bellingham girls varsity, which won the Division 3 Central Mass. championship last winter and fell two points short on playing for a State title. Bilodeau’s overall record at Walpole was 168-74, a winning percentage of 69.4.

“I met the girls at a sign-up meeting and they’re a great group,” she said. “They’re eager to get started, and with a new coach on board I’ll try to make their transition go smoothly.”

Several key returnees from last year’s title team include Sabrina Ulsh at center and Kristen Swain, Lindsey Jensen and Danielle Arcidiacono at forward. Sarah Edwards, who was ticketed to play point guard, has opted to run track. “We wish Sarah the best,” Bilodeau said. “I like to run an up-tempo offense and like to press on defense. So, all of our guards will have to handle the ball, which will be a plus as our season gets under way.”

The team’s nucleus will be built around Sarah Edwards (600, 1000), Brianna Chamberlain (300, 600, 1000), Katerina Tsiounis (hurdles, high jump) and Shelli Wagner (55, 300).

“Sarah is a good bet to shatter the record books,” Lacasse said. “Brianna, Katerina and Shelli will all be competitive and score points.”

BHS Boys Five Need Experience

Coach T.J. Chiappone enters his fourth season as the boys basketball coach at Bellingham High with an eye toward building on the progress of last year’s 9-11 squad that missed tourney play by one game.

Ten seniors have graduated, leaving Michael Ryan as the only Blackhawks’ player with game experience. The senior averaged 13 points last year and won some big contests at the buzzer with clutch shots.

BCT Gears Up for 34th Year

Bellingham Children’s Theater (BCT) will hold registration for its thirty-fourth year on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at 7 pm, in the St. Blaise Church Hall, 1158 So. Main St./Rte. 126, in Bellingham.

BCT is a performing group for all area children in grades 4–9 that meets weekly, February—June, at which time a musical is presented at Bellingham High School auditorium. There are no auditions.

Roles are assigned according to age and experience with BCT. Directors are volunteer teachers and retired teachers.

To help cover expenses there is a one-time minimal registration fee for BCT. No child is ever denied entry because of inability to pay.

Young people interested in joining Bellingham Children's Theater are invited to come to the registration meeting, which will last for about an hour.

Prospective members MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Calvey Holds Book Signing

The Taste of Bellingham is the Bellingham Business Association’s (BBA’s) most attended meeting of the year. This year, rather than being held in the Library’s community room, the event was held in the showroom of J. Brian Day on Maple Street, and attendance was off the charts.

Cathy DiPilato of J. Brian Day offered the BBA the use of their facility. This provided more space than the library, so more vendors were invited to participate. The “Taste” provides members an opportunity to experience what’s available in local cuisine and restaurants and a venue in which to showcase their culinary specialties to the Calvey (right) with granddaughter, Hailey Brant, her inspiration for the book business community, everyone networking at the same time.

BMMS Holds the 7th Annual Punkin’ Chunckin’ Bellingham Memorial Middle School held its 7th annual Punkin’ Chunkin’ event, a much-looked-forward-to seventh-grade tradition, on Tuesday, October 28. A total of 104 student participants built 44 pumpkin catapults of varying shapes and sizes to take part in the event. The school received a donation of over 200 pumpkins from the Pumpkin Farm in

Medway, and parents were invited to watch the pumpkins being launched into the field behind the school. Students had just as much fun cleaning the pumpkin remains off the field as they did launching.
