Harvestfest Set for September 21

The seventh annual Harvestfest, hosted by the Bellingham First Baptist Church and the Bellingham Bible Baptist Church, will be held on Saturday, September 21, at the Town Common from 11 am to 3 pm. The event, which also includes a music concert from 2 to 3 pm, is designed to bring local businesses and families together for a day of fun and relaxation.

All children’s games and activities are free, and all food and dessert samples provided by local businesses are also free to all attending. Children’s activities include a petting zoo, arts and crafts, a bouncy house and a children’s obstacle course. Demonstrations by local gymnastic and karate schools will also be presented.

“Harvestfest is a great way to bring the community together and for all parents and children to enjoy a day filled with many activities and good food,” said the Rev. Baron Rodrigues, pastor of the Bellingham First Baptist Church. “This year is especially significant because of

the town’s 300th anniversary of its founding. We’re hoping this event will spur the community and businesses to come together in the spirit of the town’s celebration.”

For the businesses participating, Harvestfest enables them to give back to the community and to let residents and visitors from other towns know about the services they provide.

The Rev. Rick Mosher, pastor of the Bellingham Bible Baptist Church, said, “Harvestfest is a time when the community can not only get together, but also give back.

Local businesses can freely advertise what they have to offer. Families can roam the different tables together, participate in games and crafts and see demonstrations without spending a dime. There’s no pressure to buy a product and there’s an opportunity to receive information that might be helpful.”

In case of rain or inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, September 28.

Local Playgroup Has Openings Openings are available in the Milford/Bellingham Family & Community Network Playgroup. The playgroups are held two afternoons per week from October through January. Parents may choose either Tuesday or Thursday sessions from 12:30 to 2pm. All sessions are held at the North Community Building, at the corner of Hartford Ave and Maple Street, Bellingham. Playgroups are free of charge.

The program is designed for children ages birth to 60 months. Each playgroup session includes

open play time, creative arts, story times and singa-longs. There is also a designated snack time, and parents are encouraged to sign up on a rotating basis to provide a nutritious snack.

A drop-in registration for Session 1 beginning in October will be held on Tuesday Sept. 24, from 12:30 to 2pm, at the North Community Building.

Spaces will be assigned through a lottery system.

Join the Bellingham Library staff, Trustees and Friends in celebratingboth Bellingham’s 300th and the library ’s 30th anniversary in the Blackstone Street building on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 9 pm.

There is a suggested donation of $5 per person to attend the show. In addition to the photography show, there will also be an acoustic concert, from 7 to 9 pm, with Ric Allendorf. Light

And on to the next phase, during which the tables were transformed into mission control. At each station, the children were assigned a number so that they could take turns with the different space exploration methods needed to observe these strange new planets. Each child in a group had a piece of paper containing 4 circles and a colorful display of markers so that they could draw a map of the planet after each one came back from their mission to describe what they’d seen.

The first group at the stations were told to go stand on a certain line positioned directly across from their assigned planet. Children who remained at the table to wait for details were told to turn their backs so they could not see the planets when they were revealed. Observers had one minute to stand and observe the planet using a special telescope made of a paper towel tube and a piece of blue cellophane on the end, to resemble the blue haze of the atmosphere. As soon as the minute was up, the children would race back to mission control with specific details of what they’d seen, and their group would ask questions if they needed more assistance.

The next group went to a closer observation point to view the same planet using a regular paper towel tube, but this time with no blue hazy atmosphere to cloud their view, and then came back to reveal new details not seen previously. Then the third group

After-School Programs

Please note that our policy regarding children in the library has been revised.

Children in grades 6 and under are no longer permitted to be in the library or on library grounds without an adult accompanying them, unless they have been registered for our after-school program. Please check the library website for more information.

Children in grades 7-12 will be permitted to come to the library unattended for an amount of time appropriate to their age and maturity and will be able to attend the Teen Room Activities program. At this program, teens can hang out with friends, work on homework, play video games, and more. Teens that violate the behavior policy will be informed of the rules

and may be told to leave the library property. Staff members are not obligated to contact a parent or guardian if the child is asked to leave for violation of the behavior policy.

Children in grades 4-6 who are mature enough to meet the library’s behavior expectations may attend the After-School Kids (ASK) Program with Miss Diane and/or Miss Heidi provided their parent or guardian registers them in person for the program. Both the parent and child(ren) will be required to sign an agreement on the library’s behavior expectations. The library will notify parents/guardians of children in grades 4-6 who violate the policy agreement. You can register your child(ren) from 2 to 5 pm on any regular school day or on Saturday, Sept. 7, 10am–12 pm.

The only stipulation to coverage is how your deductible applies. Your auto insurance policy will usually have a standard $500 or $1,000 comprehensive deductible; that is simple.

However, homes near the coast or on Cape Cod will sometimes come with a 2% “Named Storm Deductible” or “Wind Deductible.” The 2% is calculated from the “Coverage A Dwelling” amount on your policy.

For example, if your Coverage A Dwelling amount is $400,000, then the 2% deductible for “Named Storms” or “Wind” would be $8,000. That means the insurance company will help pay only when your home has incurred more than $8,000 in wind damages.

We see these deductible requirements mostly with homes within 1-2 miles of the ocean.

Auto insurance comprehensive coverage is very broad and covers all natural disasters. Although your homeowner’s insurance policy covers wind from a tornado or debris from a volcano (true), it does not cover earthquakes (mud slides and tremors included) or flooding. You would need to purchase extra coverage for earthquake protection and purchase a separate flood policy.

Remember, whether a windstorm blows some shingles off your roof or a tornado sends your family farm to the Land of Oz, your homeowner’s and auto insurance policy will cover the claim with the correct coverage.

Sender to be Inducted into LEC Hall of Fame In the April ’16 edition of the Bellingham Bulletin, Ken Hamwey wrote a “Where Are They Now” column about Waldemar “Val” Sender, an All-Star member of the then Southern Massachusetts University (now UMass Dartmouth) men’s basketball team, 1987–’91. In December, Sender, a Bellingham resident, will be inducted into the LEC (Little East Conference) Hall of Fame.

Sender says of his induction, “It’s obviously a tremendous honor and a privilege to be a part of that group of athletes that have been recognized for their accomplishments over the years, so I feel very honored.”

According to the LEC Hall of Fame Class of 2019 “Spotlight,” Sender is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,201 career points scored in 111 games, averaging nearly 20 points per game.

Throughout his playing career at SMU, the Corsairs had a record of 81-32, winning three LEC tournament titles (1988, 1990, 1991). For the 1987-88 season, Sender was named LEC Rookie of the Year, averaging 14.6 points and 5.3 rebounds/ game, good enough to be named to the First Team All-Conference honors for the next three seasons.

Additionally, Sender was named to the All-New England and All-Northeast Region selection from his sophomore through his senior seasons, also earning 1st team honors in 1989 and 1991, and 2nd team honors in 1990.

Home-Buyer Camps Scheduled

Buying a home is one of the largest and most important purchases you will make in your lifetime. Knowing the ins and outs of the home-buying process can better prepare you for delving into the housing market and finding your dream home. Charles River Bank (CRB) is hosting two Home Buyer Boot Camps with dinner included. The first one is Tuesday, Sept. 10, 6–8:30pm, at Alumni Restaurant & Bar, 391 East Central St./Rte. 140, in Franklin. The second option is slated for Wednesday, Sept.

11, 6–8:30pm, at New England Steak & Seafood, 16 Uxbridge Rd./Rte. 16, in Mendon. These free educational sessions will focus on real-life scenarios that demystify the entire home- buying process.

Leading the seminars are AVP/Mortgage Officer Mickee Whitney (NMLS# 782138) and Mortgage Consultant Kim Pelliccia (NMLS# 1870832), who together bring decades of experience in both lending and real estate.

Joining them is a panel of local real estate experts, including a Realtor®,

Real Estate Attorney, and Home Inspector. You will leave with valuable information and tools to acquire the home you desire. Dinner will be served at 6pm, followed by Boot Camp presentations and a question & answer period. Attendees receive a $100 credit toward mortgage closing costs and will be entered for door prizes, compliments of Charles River Bank.
