Fall Is a Busy Time for Bellingham Lions

At its Sept. 4 meeting, the Bellingham Lions Club kicked off their 2019/20 season with special guest Town Administrator Denis Fraine. Denis spoke with the Club about Bellingham’s 300th anniversary celebration, highlighting all of the wonderful events that have already taken place and reviewing all of the upcoming events through the end of the anniversary year. The Club also reviewed the exciting events that they have sponsored and previewed events that they are sponsoring this fall as they look forward to once again actively serving our Bellingham community.

On Saturday, September 28, the Bellingham Lions participated in Healthy Kids Day at Patriots Place in Foxboro by providing free vision screenings in the Lions District 33K Eye Mobile. Healthy Kids Day is a free community event that encourages kids to be active and provides families with options and methods for living healthier lives.

On Saturday, October 19, 9 am—1pm, the Bellingham Lions will once again be out for their annual White Cane Toll Road event. Look for us in our yellow vests at the intersection of routes 126/140, near the Town Common/Khoury Plaza/ Walgreens in mid-town and at the intersection of Pulaski Blvd. and South Main St., near CVS and Dean Bank. Proceeds from this event benefit our

Is your student looking for a way to earn some money to offset college costs? The MA District 33 Youth Speech Contest, taking place this fall, offers the opportunity for a student in grades 9–12 to win $1,500. This year’s speech topic is “What Is Heroism?” Students will draft their speech on the given topic, explaining what that topic means to them. The competition starts with a presentation at the local Lions Club level. If they are selected as the winner at the local level, they then will have the opportunity to move to the Zone round; winners of the Zone round move to the Region round. Winners of the Regional move to the District round in February, where the District winner is announced. Younger residents were highlighted such as young ventriloquist Nathan along with his funny puppet Jeffy, and the junior varsity and varsity softball teams were honored for making it into the TVL championships.

While the interviews were going on all around the Common, local band Pieces of Eight was playing on the bandstand to add to the party-like atmosphere. It was fun to see residents in the crowd get their moments of fame too, whether they were holding up special signs in the background while interviews were going on, getting pictures with the Zip Trip team, or being selected to be a part of the town trivia or junior reporter segment. All who left the common later in the morning were excited to have been a part of the show displaying all that our town has to offer.

Get your Halloween off to a “boo-tiful” start at Bellingham’s annual Pumpkin Stroll on Sunday, October 27, 5:30—7:30 pm. Dress up in your costume, head over to the town common, and stroll the jack-o-lantern-illuminated walkways.

Visit the trick-or-treat tables sponsored by local businesses to pick up free goodies.

Use your creative and artistic skills to decorate a pumpkin and drop it off between 12 PM and 2 PM on the 27th. Please use battery-operated tea lights to illuminate your pumpkins. A pumpkincarving contest will be held as part of the festivities, with prizes awarded in certain categories to be announced at 6:30 pm. Use your imagination and skills to carve a prize-winning pumpkin.

Attendees will be treated to the appearance of a special guest, games, and a DJ. Local businesses are also encouraged to use their creative talents and drop off a carved pumpkin or two for display.

All those dropping off pumpkins are asked to take them with you when the festivities end. There is no rain date for this event.

Second Buckley History Talk Draws Larger Audience

If prizes were being awarded, and you answered “after the Revolutionary War (1781) and before the Civil War (1838),” then you would have won.

Why? The short answer is there was no police force at that time.

At the Bellingham Senior Center recently, historian James Buckley spoke to a group of roughly a dozen people about how communities protected themselves before actual, organized police forces were established.

Cutler Takes the Reins as Principal at Middle School

David Cutler, former principal of Keough Memorial Academy, has stepped up to take the principal’s position after Jeff Croteau’s resignation.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich tradition of education,” he said in a letter home to parents. “I am excited and eager to bring my skills as an educational leader to Bellingham Memorial School and work with you as a partner in education to ensure your child’s success.” The letter continued to explain his plan to continue the BMS legacy of success by “building strong relationships with parents, students and community partners alike.”

Communication and transparency are cornerstones of Cutler’s educational philosophy, but aside from that, he enjoys everyday interaction with students, parents, and staff.

“I like being out at drop-off and pick-up to see all the students and parents,” he said. “In 2019, we’re in such a fast-paced environment that sometimes we forget to look up and smile. It’s nice to be able to say ‘Good morning’ to every single person who drives by, to see the kids get out, and support them if they’re a little apprehensive to get into the building.”

The administration at BMS is excited to have him on board, according to Superintendent Peter Marano. “Mr. Cutler has been a principal for 6 years in Bellingham,” Marano said. “He is an excellent leader who always puts the needs of his students first. He’s excited to be at BMS and looking forward to a great year.”

Cutler is currently finishing a Doctorate in Transformational Educational Leadership from University of New England. He’d like to remind parents that his door is always open for problems or concerns, and he is looking forward to a smooth transi-

NASA-Inspired Astronaut Training Activities Delight Participants

ASTRONAUTS—cont. from prev. pg. foods, but most seemed to like what they ate. The Lego building station proved quite challenging because kids quickly found that using the gloves was not easy at all! Nearby kids diligently recreated star constellations using pipe cleaners and beads. At a neighboring station many children worked with their parents to build the ultimate telescope with the various patterns of duct tape available to create a fun and very useful tool for space exploration.

The worksheets provided at another station certainly challenged the skills of those who chose to do them, especially the one using binary codes to decode the secret message! Motion training illustrated how difficult it is to move about in space. All around the room astronauts wandered in search of planets as well as the sun and moon, testing their observational skills as they completed the scavenger hunt.

Throughout the training everyone was able to enjoy the activities at their own pace. The in-depth exercises provided by NASA gave these potential future astronauts some excellent insight on what they needed to be prepared for when it is their time to lift off!

BBA Holds Successful Golf Tourney Fundraiser

The Bellingham Business Association’s held its 16th annual golf tournament held on Sept. 9, at New England Country Club. Golfers enjoyed a 3:30 pm shot gun start, followed by dinner, prizes and raffles.

The 1st-place men’s team included Mone Davong, Dung Le, Lee Yoong and Sinana Kikhoul. The 1st-place women’s team included Jane Conroy, Colleen Simoneau, Cathleen Collins and Kimberly Billeri. The 7-Day Plate Transfer Rule

Everyone seems to know something about the 7-day plate transfer rule allowed by the RMV and local police. Unfortunately, few seem to know the full legal criteria associated with this rule. In fact, if you ask around the coffee shop, you’re likely to get as many different answers as there are patrons.

We get calls from our clients every day regarding plate transfers, trade-ins, dealer sales and private passenger sales. Invariably the conversation turns to the legality of “attaching plates.” Our client, like you, wants the rules governing this convenient rule to fit their situation. Although we hate to be the bearer of bad news, often we have to explain their situation does not legally allow for the attachment of their plates to the replacement vehicle.

In short, the 7-day plate transfer rule allows for anyone who is over 18 years of age to attach their existing plate (registration) to a newly acquired vehicle as long as the previous vehicle is no longer in their possession, the plate-registration type will be the same and the ownership of the former and newly acquired vehicles are identical. Most people incorrectly assume the 7-day allowance begins the day you purchase the replacement vehicle.

That is not the case. In truth, the 7-day clock begins the day you are “out of possession” of your former vehicle.

This inconvenient truth upsets our clients who are still in possession of

their former vehicle which may be up for sale or simply be an undriveable, mechanical mess. In those cases, our client is still “in possession” of the former vehicle, so the rule doesn’t work for them. In certain other cases, our client is miffed over the start time of the 7- day rule because their former vehicle is long since gone, sold, traded or totaled, meaning their 7-day window has already closed.

To help rush along the necessary paperwork, we sometimes create the often used RMV1, scan it and send it to our client wherever they might be. At that point, they print it out and head to the RMV or local AAA office if they are an AAA member. But keep in mind that AAA offices don’t issue new license plates; they can only do transfers.

So, if you find yourself wondering if it’s legal for you to attach plates to a replacement vehicle in the future, don’t go asking around the coffee shop. Plan to give us a call, even if we aren’t your insurance agent. We are here to help and offer information you can use. And by the way, while you’re driving around legally under the 7-day plate transfer law, make sure you have copies of all documents relating to your transaction.

BHS student Megan Perkins listens to Mr. Smutok describe the manufacturing class At their August 27th meeting, Superintendent Peter Marano briefed the school committee on an exciting new opportunity for high school students. The district was able to partner with fourteen towns in the Blackstone Valley to share resources in a program called the Blackstone Valley Consortium. Marano has been working with the Blackstone Valley Superintendent’s Consortium for over a year to develop the program. The idea is to share resources within the towns, allowing students to participate in different programs that might not be offered in their towns.

“Each district offers different programs, different areas of study that kids can take, that we might not be able to offer in our district,” Marano said. Throughout the year, they discussed how to best pool those resources. Eventually, they partnered with Uxbridge technology teacher Michael Smutok and Northbridge’s Ed Hub, a facility that has manufacturing and technology opportunities for kids and adults. The manufacturing class represents the first goal of the consortium, but there are many more ahead.

Smutok developed an online version of his class using Google® Classroom.

Bellingham students can participate in that class, and once a week they meet at the Ed Hub to use their equipment and get practical, hands-on experience, applying first-hand what they learned in the Google Classroom.

“They have equipment that we certainly couldn’t purchase,” Marano said, including high-level computers and

3D printers. According to the Power Point presentation that Marano shared, the goals of the program include developing “a collaborative model for the Blackstone Valley School districts to provide non-traditional course offerings that will expose students to career options, build industry skills, and provide workforce opportunities that would be difficult in isolation.”

Specific goals include the following: • Develop and implement a manufacturing class to be offered to Blackstone Valley students in FY20.

• Create an ongoing dialogue between local industry leaders and school and district leadership.

• Expand course offerings as an ongoing process driven by local industry needs.

• Identify and activate funding to support our college and career initiatives.

• Communicate college and career opportunities to our communities.

A $25,000 grant was secured from the state to provide initial funding, leaving the cost to the district at $500 a student to participate. Marano admitted that the cost is not insignificant, but the program is much more cost effective than the district’s trying to develop and offer the course and purchase the equipment needed.

While the program began with manufacturing tech, the Consortium has bigger plans. They hope to use the initial funding to hire someone on a part-time basis not only to develop the course further, but also to add other courses.

Mount Saint Charles Academy a One-Stop Center for Success

“What we’re trying to do,” explains President Alan Tenreiro of Mount Saint Charles Academy, “is become a one-stop center for academic, social, and religious success for students and families in our area.”

Spread over 22 acres in Woonsocket, RI, Mount Saint Charles Academy is a highly rated, private, Catholic school that serves students in grades six through 12. available,” explains Tenreiro. Tuition covers about 65% of the costs associated with educating the students.

A new residence hall is nearing completion which will allow students to stay on the campus. It’s two stories high, 19,000 square feet in size and will be fully furnished. From its founding in 1924, the Mount offered a boarding option until 1972 and then discontinued it. It’ll be back later this year.

Tenreiro was born and raised in Pawtucket, where he currently lives with his wife and two children. His son is a junior at the Mount, and his daughter will graduate with the class of 2025. His wife is the director of counseling.

“As a kid, I worked here in the summer landscaping and cleaning,” recalls Tenreiro. He taught at the Mount for eight years and coached soccer for 17 years. He graduated in 1992.

He graduated from Rhode Island College in 1998 and completed his Master’s in School Administration degree in 2005. He was the assistant principal at Smithfield High School and principal at Cumberland High School before becoming the president of Mount Saint Charles on July 1, 2017. In 2015, he was named National Principal of the Year for the U.S. The Academy traces its roots back to the 1821 Brothers in France, and he says that they are still “deeply connected.” The Academy’s 100th anniversary is coming up in 2024.

Luis Cotto, program manager with the MCC, attended the recent meeting of the Council and spoke at the end of the meeting. He urged applicants for funding to take advantage of the Eligibility “wizard” program on the MCC website to help clarify if an organization’s planned program met MCC eligibility guidelines. He also suggested that teachers could benefit from applying for transportation funds for field trips to art, science and humanities-related programs through the MCC’s “Big Yellow School Bus” funding program.

The council met in the Bellingham Upper Town Hall in September to judge the suitability of the space for future art shows and other related events.

At the conclusion of the meeting it was decided that the space is difficult for those with hearing impairments, so they will return to meeting at the Bellingham Senior Center on Blackstone Street.

Their next meeting will take place the 3rd Wednesday of the month (Oct. 16), at 2PM, to begin the grant application review process.

Silver Lake residents Brian Wright and Melissa Vaillancourt showed the Commission a quick presentation that demonstrated from both satellite imagery and ground photographs the growth of densely vegetated areas of the lake, showing the difference in vegetation from September 2013 (23% lake coverage) to September 2019 (52%). It’s a topic residents want taken seriously.

“We moved to Bellingham to fulfill a lifelong dream to live on a lake,” Brian said. “The first couple of years were amazing, but over the course of the last couple of years it’s deteriorated dramatically in the aquatic vegetation, and in water quality and clarity.” Vaillancourt took over the presentation, telling the board they feel trapped and helpless to do anything about it, as well as greatly concerned about the future of the lake.

Their concerns include rapid eutrophication (successive/evolution of a lake into a bog), loss of a town amenity for recreational use, decrease in property values, odors and noxious phytoplankton, and risk of deadly blooms such as cyanobacteria.

The town shares residents’ concerns, but unfortunately Conservation Commission Chairman Cliff Matthews told the crowd their hands are somewhat

Mendon Lions Annual Country Fair Set for October 12

What began in Mendon in 1975 will continue on Sat., Oct. 12, as the Mendon Lions present the 44th annual Mendon Country Fair at the Blessing Barn, Rte. 16, 10am-4pm (rain date, Sun., Oct. 13). There will be live music throughout the day, a livestock display, crafters and vendors, free wagon rides, and K-9 demonstrations by the Mendon Police dog Brady. Another feature of the

event is “Kids’ Faire,” with a magic show, face painting, a pie-eating contest, pony rides, and a petting zoo.

One of the longtime traditions at the fair is delicious food at the Lions’ Food Court. The menu will include hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and pepper subs, meatball sandwiches, French fries, and fried dough.

Lemonade from freshly squeezed lemons, ice cream,

and watermelon will also be available, along with cold drinks and coffee.

Admission to the fair is free to all. Parking is available for a donation to the Mendon Boy Scouts. Both non-profit groups and churches will participate. All profits will go to Mendon Lions Club charities and community projects.

Is This House Haunted?

Properties that have been the site of a murder, a suicide death, or a haunting have long been considered “stigmatized or psychologically impacted.”

As a seller, are you required to disclose this known fact to a potential purchaser? As a buyer, do you feel you should be told about such an event? A conversation among friends about this situation found us all over the board. Some felt that it is no big deal while others felt the hair on the back of their necks rise.

Growing up in Massachusetts, I’ve heard countless tales of eerie happenings from people who claimed to live in haunted houses. Some of these stories gave me the creeps while others made me think, well, it might be kind of cool to have this sort of paranormal experience. These people were, in my opinion, rational people who truly believed that they were sharing their homes with ghosts!

Maybe it’s true and maybe it’s not, but there are a lot of old homes in the area; and, if we remember

correctly, at the very least, many of these old homes hosted “calling hours” for the dead. Not as dramatic as a murder for sure, but still, for some, it brings up uncomfortable feelings.

So, would you consider purchasing one of these properties? Would such stories affect the price you are willing to pay? As a seller, are you obligated to offer this information to a prospective purchaser?

How about your Realtor®? What can you expect of her/him?

The reality is that Massachusetts Realtors are obligated to disclose just about everything you can think of; but they are not obligated to disclose this type of information to you unless you, as a buyer, ask. Other rules apply for things like HIV status of former or current occupants, but a law enacted in 1998 is clear on this issue.

If it is important for you as a buyer to know that someone was murdered at a property, that someone

committed suicide there, or that a ghost roams the property nightly, then you need to ask questions pertaining to this. Your questions will trigger a duty to disclose.

Kind of weird, I know, but it’s like listening to my doctor remind me that our health care is in our own hands. We should investigate and question. The same should be said when purchasing a property.

You should and can rely on your Realtor for sure, but ultimately you should be looking out for yourself as well.

So, back to the question: is this house haunted and will you buy it?
