As Circle CG Farm Campground celebrates its half-century mark, they took a look back at how it all started, with Clifford and Marion Grover—they had a dream.

It was 1966. The established businessman had already moved his family from Western Massachusetts to Bellingham, a sleepy little town in the southeastern part of the state on the border with Rhode Island, to start a riding academy.

Harlem Wizards Headed to Bellingham

The amazing Harlem Wizards are coming to Bellingham. Join the Bellingham Educational Foundation (BEF) for a high-flying, slam-dunking, rim-rattling basketball show, as the Harlem Wizards take on the teachers and staff of Bellingham Public Schools on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The evening promises to be a fun-filled event for kids and adults, and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. At a Wizards game, fans witness amazing basketball talent combined with hilarious comedy. When you’re in the stands, you’re more than a spectator; you’re part of the show with loads of audience participation. Throughout the game, fans will experience a magical display of tricks, coordinated ball handling, fancy passing and aerodynamic athleticism combined with high-energy comedy and audience interaction.

Tip-off is set for 6:30 pm at the Bellingham High School gym. General admission tickets are available in advance for $15, or $17 at the door. In addition, a limited number of Courtside Plus tickets can be purchased online that provide priority

seating, a team photo and an exclusive meet and greet with Wizard players.

When Meeting a Blind Person: Recommendations

1. Talk directly to the person who is blind in a normal tone of voice. The fact that they cannot see is no indication that they cannot hear well.

2. Do not bring attention to a person who is blind or visually impaired when they are performing typical activities such as dialing a telephone, checking their watch, or writing their name in longhand.

3. Never assume that a blind person needs or even wants assistance. Ask, “May I be of help?” or “There’s water in the center of the table; would you like me to pour a glass for you?” Speak in a

Colleen Fernandes teaches hand-lettering and painting. After 16 years of corporate design work in Boston, she has settled in Uxbridge and also paints furniture from home. Kathy Wotton is the owner of Artworks Studio; she teaches after-school art and pottery.

Artworks Studio hosts all kinds of events, including corporate outings, fundraisers, anniversaries, and birthday parties. “Once a month,” says Kathy, “we host a family art night so that everyone can enjoy art together.” Big this time of year is making pumpkins and turkeys out of clay.

Limited scholarships are available, and there is a “third-child discount” of 30% that helps to make family participation affordable. There is also a $5

Bellingham Lions to Hold White Cane Drive on October 13

Throughout the world, the long white cane is used by people who are blind or visually impaired as a tool for safe and reliable navigation. The white cane is a symbol of the user’s skills and talents, mobility and independence. It also allows the sighted person to recognize that the user is visually impaired.

The Bellingham Lions Club will hold their yearly White Cane Drive at several intersections in the Town of Bellingham on Saturday, October 13, 9am—1pm. The Lions will be collecting money donations from vehicles that are stopped and waiting for the light to change in an intersection.

All proceeds will go to research for the prevention and cure of eye-related diseases and charities.

The Bellingham Lions Club welcomes new members. If you want to join a club that will serve your local community, as well as our global community, consider joining the Bellingham Lions Club. We are part of Lions Club International, the largest volunteer service organization in the world, with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries.

First Baptist Church Recovery Program Getting Results

written by KEN HAMWEY, Bulletin Staff Writer The Walk to Light Recovery Program at the First Baptist Church in Bellingham is only 10 months old, but its focus—helping people deal with addictions—is already getting positive results.

Ralph Geyer, a recovering alcoholic, started the ministry in January and is optimistic that those attending the weekly session every Wednesday are “gaining confidence, embracing hope and building faith that leads to peace and serenity in their daily lives.’’

Addictions vary and they surface in a variety of venues. “Our program helps people suffering from alcohol and drug addiction,’’ Geyer said. “We also help with addictions that involve money, pornography, sex abuse, eating disorders, control issues, poor relationships, and being a workaholic. The depth of participation in the program is blooming, and those attending are willing to work on their past history that lightens their burdens.’’

The 66-year-old Geyer, who’s lived in Bellingham for 26 years, is no stranger to helping people with addictions. For the last 40 years, he’s been in their corner, even traveling to Russia on 12 occasions to set up recovery programs. “During a three-year span, I traveled to Russia with missionaries to the town of Riazan (south of Moscow),’’ Geyer said. “We went to Baptist churches and orphanages, offering help and counsel to those in need.’’

Bellingham resident Ralph Geyer Before starting the Walk to Light program, Geyer, a retired plumber, volunteered at Teen Challenge, a recovery program in Hopkinton; but, since joining the First Baptist Church, he and his pastor, Rev. Baron Rodrigues, have sensed a need to start a program at the church. “He felt the time was ripe to reach out and offer help, especially to alcoholics,’’ Geyer said.

Geyer knows what alcohol can do, especially when anger dominates. The death of his father at the age of 57 left him angry and led to poor

decision-making. “I hid my hurt in alcohol, but eventually I met a pastor who helped me,’’ Geyer said. “When I recovered, I knew I had to help people who were struggling.’’

Geyer’s approach at the sessions, which start at 7 pm, is all about building trust and confidence; building hope; building relationships; and building faith.

“Building trust and confidence means making changes in attitude and conflict,’’ he emphasized.

“Character defects (anger, jealousy and loneliness) have to be eliminated. Building hope stems from getting to know the person and relating my personal story. We’ll talk about situations that are hidden in one’s past. If our discussions are successful, then that person is blessed with a new outlook. Building new relationships creates a base for a solid recovery. Camaraderie and spirit are created, loneliness is eliminated and positive resolutions occur. Another key is building faith that will bring serenity in one’s daily life. The key to that is whether a person can implement selfforgiveness into their recovery.’’

The recovery program, which began with two people, now has eight individuals attending and more are likely on the way. “If the program grows, that’s fine,’’ Geyer said. “What’s really important, however, is that a base is built that represents a

Barros Completes Eagle Scout Leadership Project

Eagle Scout Candidate Matthew Barros, from Boy Scout Troop 100, is a freshman and National Junior Honor Society student at Bellingham High School. He completed his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project at the newly re-named Joseph F. DiPietro Elementary School, previously known as South Elementary School, on August 19.

Matthew met with Principal Judi Lamarre on March 30, 2018, with the idea of changing the current school sign into a new sign with DiPietro Elementary School’s name on it and landscaping the area surrounding the sign.

Matthew has been a scout for 8 years, starting as a Tiger Scout at South Elementary. He and his scout troop have been known for leading conservation projects at the school, such as landscaping around the school signs and picking up trash on school grounds.

To raise a total of $500 for his project, Matthew held candy-bar fundraisers at Walmart in Bellingham and at his church, the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Foxboro. Additional fundraising efforts came through work colleagues of his parents, Holly and Chris Barros of Bellingham; the Boucher family of North Attleboro; his aunt Pamela Barros of Canton; and friends and neighbors in the town.

Matthew led his project, delegating specific tasks to all of his volunteers while putting in his own time

Volunteers include his grandparents Ronald and Adrienne Barros of Dedham and his parents, Holly Barros (Co-Committee Chair) and Chris Barros (Scoutmaster of Troop 100). Troop 100 volunteers include Assistant Scoutmaster Joe DeLuca, Committee Chair Jennifer DeLuca, Life Scout Bradley DeLuca, Assistant Scoutmaster Greg Gonthier, Assistant Scoutmaster Brian Bell, Eagle Scout Kolbe Bell, Assistant Scoutmaster Steve Clancy, Star Scout Sam Clancy, First Class Scout RJ Rood, and Second Class Scout Jeffrey Farquhar Alaire.

written by KEN HAMWEY, Bulletin Sports Editor Jacob Bassett is optimistic that the Bellingham High football team can deliver some positive results for the 2018 season.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior captain, who’s playing offensive tackle and linebacker in his third varsity season, has three goals that he’d like to see the Blackhawks achieve. Bassett (pictured right) wants to see the squad restore pride in the grid program and wants that pride to be accompanied by their compiling a winning record and qualifying for the playoffs. If those objectives are realized, he’d consider his final year of football a huge success.

So far, BHS is off to a mixed start, compiling a 1-1 record at Bulletin deadline.

When Bassett started as a sophomore in 2016, the Blackhawks went 5-6 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since the tourney format was implemented. “Achieving the three goals is realistic,” Bassett said.

“We’ve got nine returning players on offense and eight on defense. We’ve also got a lot of experience and our players are talented.”

Bassett points to the trio of other captains and sees outstanding leaders who handle their positions effectively. The other captains are all seniors—Dan Gavin at guard and

“Dan leads by example, is adept at guard and linebacker and is a student of the game,” Bassett said. “Jim is a two-time captain who’s skilled as a passer and runner. He’s a good field general who’s always under control.

Zach is a vocal leader who’s a great example for our younger players. He’s also highly talented.”

Bassett would relish another playoff berth because it would be an achievement for two of the last three years.

“It would be awesome to say that this is the mark we left,” he emphasized.

The campground is now in its third generation of stewardship, with grandson Peter Daley and his partner Cindy Smith at the start of another half-century. Peter’s sister, Donna Boynton, and her husband, Michael, as well as extended family, are always close by to lend a hand.

With Rob and Linda Daley driving the

team, it is clear that Cliff and Marion achieved their dream—establishing not just another business venture, but a means to care for their family for generations to come. More upgrades are on the way as camping evolves. But for now, the Daley family is celebrating the past with an eye to the future.

With time, regular campers became like family—some no longer with us, and some we haven’t met yet. The Daley Family would like to thank their team of employees as well as past, present and future

Positive Atmosphere Surrounds BHS Volleyball Squad

written by KEN HAMWEY, Bulletin Sports Editor Bellingham High’s volleyball team, which ended a 17-year absence from tourney play last year, is aiming for a return to the playoffs, but that objective is No. 2 on coach Steve Mantegani’s to-do list. The veteran coach is primarily interested in building the Blackhawks’ program and seeing it improve daily.

“Getting to the tournament last year was a big step forward for the program,” said Mantegani, who’s in his third year as head coach. “The kids were excited that they had broken a long streak of failing to get to the playoffs. They needed to know they could do it.

Now, we just want to keep getting better, increase our win total and, hopefully, qualify for the tourney again.”

“For three years Maddie was an outside hitter,” Mantegani said. “But we’ve moved her to setter and she’s transitioned into that role nicely. She’s a good passer who sets up well and has excellent court vision. She’s competitive and athletic and has a high volleyball IQ. Jenna is in her third year. She can pass, she’s athletic and she has lots of ability. She committed to lots of off-season work.”

Three junior hitters who are key cogs in Mantegani’s nucleus are Gianna Sannicando, Rose Nelson and Chloe Fisher.

“Gianna is a three-year veteran who is probably the most athletic player we have,” Mantegani noted. “She jumps high, plays well above the net and is quick.

Rose also is a three-year player who’s consistent, passes well and attacks on the right side effectively.

She’s athletic, has a strong volleyball IQ and goes to the floor to play defense. Chloe is a middle hitter who’s still developing. She’s tall (5-9), knows the game and is working on her quickness. A club player, she’s enthusiastic and has lots of potential.”

Sophomore Tatum Lee and senior Maddie Vadenais are hitters. Lee plays the middle and Vadenais patrols the right side. “Tatum is tall at 5-10,” Mantegani said.

“She’s in her first year but she’s quick and skilled.

A club player, she’s very athletic. Maddie ran crosscountry but she’s now in her second season with us.

She learns quickly, works hard, is athletic, is intelligent and is quickly developing her skills.”

Senior Ally Hall and junior Olivia McDermott are still vying for playing time at libero. “Ally is a first-year player on the varsity,” Mantegani said. “We like the quickness she brings to the position and we’re looking for her to pick up our defensive scheme quickly.

Age-Friendly Memory Café Slated to Open in January in Bellingham story & photo by DAVE DUNBAR, Contributing Writer A “Memory Café” near you may be the most visible sign of a growing movement across Massachusetts—and in Bellingham—to make communities age and dementia friendly.

These cafés welcome both the people afflicted with memory changes and their families or care partners. You can find two cafes nearby, at the Senior Centers in Franklin and Foxborough.

“We hope to have ours open in January,” says Sheila Ronkin, Certified Program Manager in Outreach and Development at the Bellingham Senior Center. To begin, the café would be open on one Saturday each month and be staffed by trained volunteers and one paid person.

There are approximately 90 “Memory Cafes” in the Commonwealth.

“Each memory café is different,” according to the website www.jfcsboston.org. “Some cafés invite guest artists, some offer education about memory changes, and some are just for relaxing and chatting. But all cafés share one goal: to help guests feel

Cafés are a place to talk with others who understand what you are going through, to forget about limitations and instead focus on strengths, to enjoy each other’s company, and to explore something new.”

Ronkin, who has worked at the Bell-

ingham Senior Center for 14 years, is in the process of applying for a grant that will help the town become more age and dementia friendly.

“The grant will allow us to train and educate people who work in government, businesses, churches and schools,” says Ronkin. The goal is to

increase awareness of the effects of dementia and assist those living with the condition.

“What we as a community will learn,” explains Ronkin, “is how to effectively relate to a senior who appears lost or confused and offer the most effective help, or notify someone who can help.”

And there can be some intergenerational benefits once the schools adopt curriculum addressing the needs of those with dementia. “Children today don’t know their grandparents. It may be hard to relate to them, and that’s a skill they need to help narrow the generation gap.”

“We want to change how we view people living with cognitive issues,” explains Elizabeth Connell, the Director of Behavioral Support Programs for the MA Councils on Aging. She says nearly 140 communities are currently “engaged in the movement.”

“Take the example of a hairdresser who has had a client for 30 years,” says Connell. “This client may have developed dementia over the years and now needs to be treated differently.

By 2020, Connell hopes to have 115 communities “completely active in the movement toward age and dementia friendliness. It’s about shifting a mindset.”

Ronkin adds that the support in Bellingham for this movement has been “phenomenal. The people I’ve spoken with are excited, ready to see specific plans, and begin the process.”

BWOT Kicks Off Its 33rd Year

The Bellingham Women of Today (BWOT), a nonprofit civic organization, begin another fun and exciting year serving Bellingham and surrounding communities. This group of dedicated people support our food pantry, senior center, school groups, police and fire department, and families in need. Some of the activities it has sponsored include our annual Cable 8 telethon raising funds for needy families (Santa’s Elves Project), breakfasts with Santa and the Easter Bunny, participating in Bellingham’s annual Pumpkin Stroll, children’s letters from Santa, Easter baskets for Meals-on-Wheels seniors, high school scholarships, and aid for a local women’s shelter.

The MA Women of Today focuses on ending hunger, and the US Women of Today’s focus is on domestic violence awareness. Thirteen states have WOT chapters, and there is one international chapter in Limassol, Cyprus.

“We would like you to join us as we continue to serve our community,” said BWOT member Dee Clark. “We are open to men and women 18 years or older. We meet in the upper town hall, 10 Mechanic Street, Bellingham, on the second Monday of the month at 7:30 pm, September through June.”

BBA Holds 11th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament

Fun was the unofficial theme of the Bellingham Business Association’s 11th annual golf tournament, held on Monday, Sept. 17, at New England Country Club. Golfers enjoyed a 3:30 pm shotgun start followed by dinner, prizes and raffles.

A hole-in-one was shot for the first time in the tournament’s history, by Hopedale resident Tim Mooradian on the Par 3 hole 6. Mooradian and teammates Mike Kelley, Chad Chviek and Ed Fraine won first place with a score of 7 under par for the 9-hole event. Second place went to the team that included Josh Forget, Tom O’Grady, Kris Buckman and Chris Praetsch.

The first-place women’s team included Cindy McNulty, Karen Dutil, Liz Bell and Mary MacKinnon.

The men’s and women’s longest-drive contest was won by Steven Hole III and Amy Kirby. The closest to the pin winners were Paul DaSilva and Shefali Desai.

All golfers landing on the green on hole #6 received a lottery ticket.

A special raffle was held for (300) $1.00 lottery tickets, donated by Larry’s Liquors and won by Paul Caci.
