Mail-in applications may be obtained by calling the town clerk’s office.

All members of your household should be listed, including children, members of the service and students (even though living away from home), unless they have established a permanent residence elsewhere.

Please remember you may license your dog by filling out the attached form and sending it back with updated rabies information and a check made payable to the Town of Bellingham. It is the best way to ensure that your dog is licensed on time.

Residents are asked to return their forms immediately either to the Town Clerk’s office or to special drop-off points within the town, including Bellingham Public Library, Rockland Trust Bank or the Town Hall Mailbox.

Falling & Fire Prevention Tips Presented at Senior Center

story & photo by Marjorie Hollman, Contributing Writer Norfolk County Deputy Sheriff Joe Canavan visits the Bellingham Senior Center on the first Thursday of every month as part of Sheriff Michael Bellotti’s Triad program. In February the topic was preventing falls, along with some tips on fire prevention. The two topics naturally go hand in hand, especially since maintaining smoke alarms is an essential part of fire prevention, and reaching smoke alarms at ceiling height can be challenging for many of us who are of shorter stature.

Bowyer has helped customers with “no credit history,” using instead things like phone bills and rent statements to make the case for a home loan. Customers with credit scores above 700 can get “amazing rates” on their loans. But Bowyer has also worked with customers who had scores below 500 and he recommends a plan to bring that number up. “So we’re helping someone, no matter what. After sharing more of his personal story, Belanger got down to why he had come—to cheer us on as writers.

Passing on the best advice he says he has received, he said, “Never forget who pays your paycheck.” He then went on to explain that this is not your boss—it’s the person who consumes what you make—your readers (or listeners—he included audio and video, pointing out the many forms in which people now consume story).

He then shared a story of his time working for an advertising agency.

“The best advice I received there was that the next time I bought anything, to ask myself ’Why did I buy this, not that?’ The next time you are touched by a story, ask yourself, what was it about that story that worked? Always ask yourself why.”

Real Claim Stories from Our Files

As a local, independent insurance agency in Bellingham, we write all kinds of policies for all kinds of people. When claims occur, our clients call us to explain what happened and ask for guidance. What follows is a short list of some of our more interesting claims.

False Teeth Nicely Covered: One of our homeowner clients had an in- law staying with them one weekend.

When the in-law awoke one morning and reached to the night stand to retrieve their dentures, they were missing. Nearby, the family dog was gnawing on you know what.

In another case, an auto insurance client told us he was having a heated discussion with his girlfriend as she exited his vehicle. As she slammed the door behind her, her dentures fell to the ground while she yelled one last remark. Our client roared away, promptly driving over her now suddenly worthless dentures.

Believe it or not, the denture owners were both reimbursed by our client’s carrier for damage to their property.

Bad Dogs and Bad Cats: Good dogs love and protect owners and their property, right? So, when one of our homeowner clients called to say his dog did a good thing protecting his property, I wondered what he meant.

Our client was convinced his dog tore his house apart in a fit of rage in order to keep a would-be intruder out of the house. Our client wanted to know if

the damage would be covered. He told me the damage paled in comparison to what a burglary claim would have entailed if not for his dog’s heroics. Our client was disappointed to hear there is no coverage for damage caused by your own pet.

In another case, one of our homeowner clients, who owned a cat, had recently moved to MA from CT. Apparently her cat objected to the move.

It’s my understanding cats are not shy about making their feelings known.

Apparently their cat had scratched, soiled and shredded upwards of $10,000 worth of personal property.

Since it was their own cat, there was no coverage.

No Offer on the House, But the Diamond’s a Keeper: One of our clients was in the process of selling their lovely home. During the process, they spent time between their for-sale house and their house on Cape Cod. Upon inspection of their personal property at their forsale house, they realized a piece of jewelry valued at $48,000 had disappeared. Since the item was scheduled on a jewelry rider, their claim was covered. Any number of real estate agents and would-be buyers had been through the house in previous months. I can almost hear the real estate agent encouraging would-be buyers to take a look around the house and help themselves, to which they replied, “Oh, we will.”

COWELL – continued from page 19 “Joe Bengiovanni was our goalie and Jay Langevin played everywhere,” Cowell noted. “Joe was an allstar who had great physical skills and he played intelligently. Jay was versatile, a fine all-around player.

Junior Brian Drake was a skilled center midfielder who was good in transition and had a high soccer IQ. Coach Suffoletto knew soccer. He knew how to put players in the right positions and he promoted team chemistry.”

After graduation, Cowell enrolled at the University of Kansas, where he majored in French. He graduated in 1999. “I wanted to go to a big school and see another part of the country,” Cowell said. In 2001, he enlisted in the Army and spent two of his five years in South Korea. A staff sergeant, he was discharged in 2006.

Cowell, who earned a master’s degree from UMassBoston, joined the faculty at King Philip Middle School, where he taught French for 10 years. Currently, he’s in his second year on the staff at Blake Middle School in Medfield, where he teaches French

The $8,000 study, which is funded by a grant, will be limited in scope according to Fraine, but will consider several aspects, including the future senior populawww.EastcoOil.com tion of Bellingham, programs currently available, and needs of citizens or staff that need to be addressed.

Fraine described the study as a preliminary step in addressing the needs of the senior citizens and senior center, particularly regarding parking at the building.

Fraine explained that the renewal process does not involve negotiating specific channels or bundles for customers of Comcast or Verizon, but rather for the local channel services they provide. “Essentially what the renewal process looks at is what our franchise fee is being spent on,” he said.

The franchise fee, which currently stands at 4%, is a fee assessed on residents’ cable bills that pay for the programming and studio. The fee could potentially go to as high as 5% or as low as 2%.

The first step in the process is to assess the community needs regarding local channel programming.

Residents are encouraged to attend the ascertainment hearing to provide input.

For the sixth consecutive year, the New England Tenors (NET) and Greater Milford Community Chorus (GMCC) will join forces to present a benefit concert to support the Union Church of Hopedale.

The NET (John Middleton-Cox, Damian Corcoran and Stefan Barner) will bring their distinctive unique style and flair to the stage as they perform everyone’s favorite classic Italian arias, Irish ballads, and selections from West Side Story. The Tenors welcome back the breathtaking vocals of guest soprano Rachele Schmeige, along with pianist Wayne Ward, violinist Peter Stickel and drummer Pat Hanafin. The GMCC, led by Dan Zabinski, will present a musical tribute to the 60s and 70s.

Democrats to Hold Caucus and Elect Delegates

The Bellingham Democratic Town Committee will hold a caucus on Saturday, March 3, at 10am, in the Arcand Room of the Municipal Center, 10 Mechanic St., to elect delegates to the State Convention, which will be held in Worcester on June 1—2. Any registered resident Democrat may run to be a delegate. There are additional slots for minority, disabled and youth delegates. Voter registration will be available.
