Per Bellingham bylaw, as of July 1st dog license registrations will be subject to a $20 late fee per dog.

Please get your dog(s) licensed immediately to avoid any of the additional fines that are mandated by Massachusetts General law.

Those fines will be assessed beginning in August and each subsequent month through October. Please note that all fines are cumulative, and failure to pay them will result in a court appearance.

BEF Awards Over $25,000 In Grants is in the Air, Time to Repair!

The BEF announced grant recipients at the School Committee’s June 8 meeting. (Submitted photo) On June 8, the Bellingham Educational Foundation awarded $25,497 to the Bellingham School District for the following grants: Stall Brook Stallion SEL Club, BHS Science Lab Extension Update, Orff Instruments for All at Bellingham Memorial School, Makerspace Coding Robots at DiPietro Elementary School, Glider Challenge at Bellingham Memorial School, The Biology of Birds at Bellingham High School.

There were nine grant applications submitted this

year, totaling over $74,000. Thank you to all who applied.

Since 2013 the BEF has awarded $242,623 back to our schools. A big “thank you” goes to our community for your continued support and donations.

We are excited to get back to our normal fundraising efforts and look forward to our upcoming events.

BBA Presents Unsung Hero Award and Two Scholarships

by Jennifer Russo, Contributing Writer One of the most anticipated events of the year for the Bellingham Business Association (BBA) is the presentation of their scholarship awards to students and the Unsung Hero award to a member of the community, nominated by their peers.

2020 was a year unlike any other, with exceptional challenges and changes. BBA President Susan Ranieri commented that “through the pandemic, many people have worked extremely hard to help the residents of our town stay safe. We received several very good nominations, but when we saw the one for this person, we all agreed immediately that she should be awarded.”

When Esther Martone was asked up to receive her award, all heads were nodding in agreement.

In 2019, Martone started working for the town of Bellingham as the Public Health Nurse for the Board of Health. When the pandemic hit hard in March of 2020, her 10-hour-per-month part-time role quickly turned into a 40+ hour position. Esther has been a key member of Bellingham’s Emergency Management Team, which has served as the conduit between town officials and state and federal agencies throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Esther attended daily briefings addressing the main concerns of our municipal and school departments and responded to questions from the public during daily live broadcasts on Cable 8,” Ranieri told the audience. “Her contributions to the town of Bell-

When presented with her plaque, Martone was extremely humble during the huge applause, but we know her work for the town has been truly above and beyond under circumstances where people had many questions and concerns. She was the lighthouse that helped guide the ship in the storm, and we are all very grateful.

Throughout last year, even with all of the time she was spending working for the town, she continued to work her full-time job as a Registered Nurse and tended to the needs of her family, who were proudly there supporting her at the event.

“The guidance and technical assistance that Esther provided as it related to all things COVID was vital to our town, especially during the first few months of the outbreak when Town Officials were formulating

There are two $1,500 scholarships, which are awarded to high school students from Bellingham, and one Unsung Hero Award, given to someone who has exemplified selflessness and has contributed to the Bellingham community in an above and beyond way throughout the past year. The two scholarship recipients are Kaitlyn Little and Cole Shramek.

Kaitlyn Little is a graduate of Bellingham High School who will attend Worcester State University in the fall, studying to become a nurse.

“She graduated with a 3.9 GPA while working part time, being Vice President of the student council and of the class of 2021,” remarked BBA President Susan Ranieri.“She was head editor of the yearbook committee, a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the varsity cheer team. She also did many hours of community service, organized fundraising for her class and volunteered at rehabilitation and AWARDS— continued on page 10

On his scholarship application, Cole wrote that his family has what they call “life lessons”— considering how to live his life, and be honest with neighbors and fair with co-workers, hardworking and loyal to his employer and loving and kind to family and friends.

He feels he’s has been greatly blessed with people who taught him how to represent these values.
