Bellingham Women of Today treasurer Dee Clark took the opportunity to present several Inspire Awards.

“The Inspire Awards are given to individuals and organizations that support their local Women of Today chapters,” Dee explained. “Their support is paramount in the success of the chapter and makes our community a better place to live and work.”

John Orthman, President of the Bellingham Business Association, presented a check on their behalf and took the time to reiterate the importance of community to the BBA,

whose tagline is “building a better community through business.”

The BBA always welcomes new members, and information about the organization can be found online at bellinghambusinessassociation.org.

Like many local organizations, the Bellingham chapter of the Women of Today could use an infusion of new members. Founded in 1985, the BWOT is a non-profit civic organization. Their purpose, according to the Women of Today website, is “to contribute to the betterment of our community while providing leadership training and personal enrichment to our members.” It’s open to men and women age 18 and older; information can be found on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bellinghamwomenoftoday.

The event finished at 9 pm, with a thank-you from Linda Trudeau to the night’s many donors. Through their generosity, the telethon earned $2,726 and a sleigh-load of toys to help local families at Christmas. The entire broadcast is available online at the station’s archives at abmi8.org.

MATT BLUE—The 2003 graduate was a four-year competitor on Bellingham’s basketball team, averaging 17 points from his off-guard slot and scoring more than 1,000 points. During his senior season, he helped coach Barry Hutchinson’s squad finish with a 25-1 record and a state championship by defeating Bromfield. A three-time Tri Valley League all-star in basketball, Blue also excelled in baseball, hitting .370 during a four-year career. After graduation, he enrolled at St. Lawrence University and enjoyed additional success at the Division 3 level. He averaged 10 points a game and played on three winning teams, highlighted by a 24-4 contingent his senior year that earned an NCAA tourney berth. After college, Blue quickly was hired as an assistant basketball coach at Susquehanna University in Seligsgrove, PA. He later moved on to other assistant posts at Lafayette and the University of Hartford. Currently, he’s a player development coach for the National Basketball Association in Jinan, China.

STACEY BLUE—The 1999 graduate of BHS scored 1,000 points in basketball and led Bellingham’s field-hockey team in scoring for three seasons. She was a co-captain and team MVP in basketball and field hockey at Bellingham and served as a co-captain her senior year at UMass-Amherst. At BHS, she was a four-time Tri Valley League all-star in field hockey and basketball, and was the Boston Globe’s player of the year in field hockey in 1997 and 1998. A Northeast Region All-American in field hockey in 1998, she hit .300 twice in softball and excelled as a sprinter in track. A key contributor on the 1996 state title field hockey team at Bellingham, she was a dynamic force on a basketball squad that went from 2-18 in her freshman season to the tournament. In softball, she led the Blackhawks in stolen bases and in track she ran the 100-meter event in 11.3 seconds.

BRENNA ELLIOTT—The 1991 BHS graduate scored 111 goals in field hockey and that career total elevated her to a No. 7 ranking in the country during the 1990 season. Elliott also was a dynamic competitor in track, establishing a Tri Valley League record in the javelin, throwing it 117 feet, 10 inches. Her all-star recognition included the TVL, Boston Globe, Boston Herald and The Milford News. Forty-five of her 111 goals came in her junior year in the fall of 1989. In 1988, she was a sophomore and the Blackhawks were striving to win a state title. Her goal against Mansfield in tourney play gave BHS a 1-0 triumph and that victory enabled the Blackhawks to advance and eventually become state champs after downing Southbridge. Elliott experienced a second state crown as an assistant coach. During a four-year stretch, she was Bellingham’s jayvee coach when Joanne Paquette guided Bellingham to its third state title in 1996.

GLEN GARIEPY—Bellingham High’s all-time leading scorer in basketball amassed a four-year total of 2,070 points, a record that has gone unchallenged for 52 years. He averaged 35 points his junior year and 34 as a senior, leading the Blackhawks to the Tri County League title. Also a phenomenal pitcher and power hitter, he won 26 games in baseball, finishing 9-1 his senior year and later going 10-0 for the Milford Legion. In an incredible pitching performance, he hurled all 10 innings of a one-run win over Blackstone, striking out 21 hitters. BHS posted an 18-2 record his senior year (1966) in baseball and was 19-1 his final year in basketball. Gariepy was a Tri County League choice for three years and was named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team in basketball. He also was a Bay State Tournament all-star as a frehsman when Bellingham won that tourney. He earned a full scholarship to the University of Rhode Island and later returned to BHS where he taught English and also coached the girls varsity basketball team for 21 years. He also coached jayvee baseball at Bellingham.

RON RUSSELL—The 1981 BHS graduate was a three-year varsity starter in football and baseball. A tri-captain in football on the 1980 squad, he was a receiver and cornerback who sparked that team to the school’s first winning season. Russell had seven interceptions and four fumble recoveries that year. Baseball, however, is where he excelled. A co-captain on the 1981 team, the pitcher-third baseman hit .400 and was named a Tri Valley League all-star. A two-time MVP for the Ashland Legion, he also played for the prestigious Milford Town Team. He excelled at Brandeis University where as captain he pitched and played third base. Drafted by the Texas Rangers, he played two seasons in Double-A baseball in the Florida Gulf Coast League where he was a teammate of future Major League star Sammy Sosa. He later served as an assistant coach for Brandeis and the Ashland and Westboro Legion squads.

RICKY SANTOS—A three-sport star at BHS, Santos quarterbacked the Blackhawks to a pair of Super Bowl crowns that included victories over Martha’s Vineyard and Tyngsboro. He also played on the 2003 state title basketball squad that downed Bromfield in the championship game. Twice selected as the Tri Valley League’s MVP in football, Santos twice captured the Football Player of the Year Award in Division 5. He later became a Division 1-AA All-American at the University of New Hampshire, throwing 123 touchdown passes for 13,212 yards. He led New Hampshire to four straight berths in the 1-AA playoffs, passed for 165 yards and a touchdown in the Hula Bowl and had his number (2) retired at both BHS and UNH. Santos won the Walter Payton Award as a junior at UNH, the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy at the 1-AA level. The 2003 BHS graduate, later coached the wide receivers at UNH but now is the quarterbacks coach at Columbia University.

RON BONOLLO—A superb athlete at BHS in basketball and baseball, Bonollo will be inducted as a coach for leading the Blackhawks to state championships in field hockey in 1985 and 1988. The 1985 Division 2 crown was the first state title at BHS in the modern era and the 1988 title was achieved at the Division 1 level. BHS beat Murdoch in Division 2 and Southbridge in Division 1. Bonollo’s field hockey records at two schools were dynamic. He was 84-14 at Franklin High (three Hockomock League titles) and his Bellingham teams compiled an 86-13 record. At Bellingham, he transformed field hockey from a deliberate, possession game to an up-tempo style. What followed during his five years at the helm were Tri Valley League, Sectional and State championships. Induction into the BHS Hall of Fame will mark the third time he’s been a hall of famer. He was inducted into the Mass. Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Dean College Hall of Fame in 1980.

FRANK FLYNN—A three-sport coach (basketball, baseball and cross-country), Flynn’s 14-year career ended with a 70.5 winning percentage and an overall record of 560-234. His basketball teams went 242-76; his cross-country squads compiled a 212-80 mark; and his baseball teams went 106-78. His 1957-58 basketball team won the Bay State Class E championship and his 1958-59 squad won the Bay State Class D title. He coached some of Bellingham’s finest athletes, such as Ron Bonollo, Jim Bonollo, Glen Gariepy, George LaPrade and Roger Canestrari. Flynn enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in the infantry for two-plus years in the European Theater, earning the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. A terrific educator, Flynn not only taught and coached, but he also served BHS as an assistant principal and as acting principal. After leaving BHS in 1965, he became a high school football referee. A year later, he suffered a fatal heart attack while refereeing a game between Arlington and New Bedford. He was 42.

1985 FIELD HOCKEY TEAM—This squad was the first to capture a state championship at BHS in the modern era.

Coached by Ron Bonollo, the Blackhawks finished their regular-season at 16-2 and were runners-up to Hopkinton for the Tri Valley League title. When the Sectional Tournament got underway, BHS defeated, in order, Sandwich, Harwich, Cohasset and Bishop Stang (3-1) for the crown. A 1-0 victory over Triton gave the Blackhawks the Eastern Mass. title and they wrapped up a Cinderella season by downing Murdoch, 3-1, at Boston University for the Division 2 state crown. The players included Beth Thornton, Lisa Payne, Mandi Coady, Marci Coady, Tammy Coady, Lisa Beals, Kim Trites, Tammy Kosmas, Barbara Deziel, Lisa Colbreath, Heather Fontaine, Sheila Hastey, Michelle LaPlante, Sarah Powers, Diane Loff, Christine Fleuette, Carol Brennan and Jill Morrell.

2003 BASKETBALL TEAM—Coached by the late Barry Hutchinson, this squad finished with a 25-1 record, rolling to four triumphs in the Sectional then two more in the state playoffs that led to the Division 3 state crown. During the tourney run, the Blackhawks defeated, in order, Westwood, Wareham, Norwell, Rockland (for the Sectional title), Watertown and Bromfield (for the state championship). The starters included captains Ben Belcher and Matt Blue in the backcourt, Jeff Cammarata and Ricky Santos at forward and Dorien Brown at center. Rounding out the squad were Wil Spont, Andy Melchiorri, Jermaine Jordan, Mike Claffey, Kevin DeGray, Adam Remillard, Cyril Heinricher and Brad Jones. Assistant coaches were Dave Hutchinson, TJ Chiappone and Rob Evans. The trainer was the late Arthur “Doc” Provost. The only close call in the tourney was against Rockland, which ended with Bellingham winning, 59-57. BHS captured the state title by downing Bromfield, 49-40, at the Worcester Centrum.

Water often can be a problem on a variety of fronts—from needing to be clean and pure to spewing out of a burst pipe. The LEPC underwent training sessions on distributing clean water in case of an E-coli bacteria issue.

“We trained on how to distribute clean water to residents and how to decontaminate the water system,” Poirier noted, “and we learned how to provide water for fire coverage when pumps are

inactive.”

Town Clerk Announces 2019 Census

Town Clerk Ann L. Odabashian announces that the 2018 town census has begun and census forms are being mailed to the approximately 6,500 households in Bellingham.

In most cases, verification of current information is all that will be needed. Simple instructions are included for making any changes, corrections, additions or deletions.

Any resident who does not receive a form or has any questions is asked to contact the Town Clerk’s office at 508-657-2830.

The local census is required by Massachusetts law to determine the residents of individual cities and towns. The Town Clerk wishes to impress upon every resident the importance of responding to this census. Failure to respond to this mailing may result in removal from the voting list.

Residents are now able to verify their voting status on their census form. Any resident who wishes to register to vote through the mail need only check the voting status section (Party) and an application will be sent to their home. Mail-in applications are also available at the Bellingham Library and Post Office and at the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Norfolk County Register of Deeds Visits the Library story & photo by CHRISTINE DOYLE, Contributing Writer As part of its community outreach program, Norfolk County Register of Deeds William O’Donnell brought his office to the Bellingham Library on November 20th. Participants were provided with folders chock full of information about services that the Registry provides, such as confirming mortgage discharges, obtaining Declaration of Homestead protection and researching family history via land records. O’Donnell gave an in-depth discussion about the services provided as well as enlightening the audience about steps that have been taken to modernize the Registry to make it more accessible.

The first recorded document in the Norfolk County Registry of deeds dates back to 1793, when recording documents was a much lengthier process than it is now thanks to the wonders of technology. The registry has since scanned and transcribed the 250,000 historical documents so that the public can view these records online.

O’Donnell informed the audience that they can access records at home by visiting www.norfolkdeeds. org and, if they have any questions or issues, they may contact the Customer Service Department at 781-4616104. O’Donnell also encouraged visits to the Registry’s office at 649 High Street in Dedham, where many terminals are available for public research access.

In addition to these services, the Registry has resources available for foreclosure assistance. Two

Applefield Speaks at BMS About Holocaust Experiences

written by MARJORIE TURNER HOLLMAN, Contributing Writer Holocaust survivor Janet Applefield recently spoke to seventh-grade students at Bellingham Memorial Middle School. Although this was her fifth visit to BMMS, her story of surviving the Holocaust was no less compelling on this return visit, and the students who sat in the audience were no less interested than students who had heard her story of survival in the past. Geography teacher Geoffrey Favekeh had helped prepare his students prior to Applefield’s visit so that they would have some understanding of the Holocaust and the facts of the events, but actually hearing an eyewitness, a survivor, was another matter.

Favekeh noted that on the day following Applefield’s presentation, the students were still talking about her presentation and were eager to continue the conversation in class, reflecting on her talk and the events of the Holocaust. “The students had powerful questions for her and got a lot out of the presentation,” Favekeh noted.

Applefield, who is Jewish, shared slides of photographs saved by her father, who survived the war. She showed pictures of herself as a baby, nestled up to her mother shortly after she was born, in 1935. Her mother was killed in 1942, when Applefield was seven, and her father was put in a forced-labor camp, leaving Applefield alone until she was given to a relative’s nanny. She was taken out to the countryside and hidden on a farm

her story and how she felt during the time. It made me feel upset because it is not okay to do that to people, and how grateful I am that no one in my family had to go through that.”

Alexander Hughes, 7th grade, recalled, “It was an experience that really opened my eyes. I had an idea of how hard people’s lives were, but hearing her stories really made me wonder how bad everyone’s lives were at the time, considering hers was extremely hard.

The pictures showed me that she had a great life before, but it was all taken away from her.

She sounded so open about it, and to think about how she had to go through that and then move on, is unthinkable.”

Held this year on Friday, December 7th, the party, previously held at Bellingham Memorial School, was moved two years ago to the Wrentham site for the comfort of the residents. Students of Bellingham Memorial and High School, many of whom have volunteered several years in a row, were bused in to help out.

pre-qualified for specific events by achieving highplace finishes at local tournaments. The New England Division of the United States Fencing Association held its cadet U-17 qualifying competition for JOs on November 18, at Boston Fencing Club.

In Boston, Bellingham’s own Viha Patel represented the Rhode Island Fencing Academy & Club (RIFAC) located in E. Providence, RI. She secured a position at the Junior Olympics with a 7th-place victory in cadet women’s epee.

Viha will be traveling to Denver, CO, for JOs in mid-February, where she will be challenged by the nation’s most talented and experienced fencers.

Viha trains hard at RIFAC under the supervision of owner and head coach Alex Ripa. Mr. Ripa is a coach with national credentials, experience, and recognition. The club’s training program has produced multiple national champions and members of the USA cadet and junior world cup teams, as well as international competitors and medalists.

Local seniors may now take advantage of a special new photography class led by Jim Justice of Bellingham.

“I like to take pictures of places I visit, landscapes I see that have some particular interest, and various objects with lots of color like flowers and fall foliage. I’ve been taking pictures since I was a teenager, but only recently have I had the time to become a serious amateur.” He has many of his photos transferred to canvas and then framed. “In my house, I have about 20 of them on the walls.”

“I’m comfortable where I am,” says Jim. “I’ll see where it leads— maybe to teaching someday.”

“Someday” has arrived. Beginning on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 10AM, Jim will convene a monthly one-hour class at the Bellingham Senior Center. It is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about photography and transferring photos to canvas for framing.

Nearly 200 people attended the annual Tree of Life ceremony at Milford Regional Medical Center Monday night, celebrating life and paying tribute to those who have survived cancer, battled the disease or have been touched by it.

This year, the annual event raised more than $12,000 for the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care at Milford Regional. The fund is named in honor of the Oliva Family of Milford and provides oncology patients with support during their treatment at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Milford Regional.

The evening included a performance by the Very Merry Dickens Carolers, as well as remarks from Edward J. Kelly, president and CEO of Milford Regional; Peter F. Orio, III, DO; Michael Constantine, MD; and Mona Kaddis, MD. Gold and silver tribute angels were displayed as a reminder of loved ones affected by cancer, and tribute luminaries lit a path from the hospital to where the Tree of Life was lit. Each light on the tree symbolizes a loved one affected by cancer, and the tree remains lit during the holiday season to serve as a reminder of hope in the fight against cancer.

Decorating Gingerbread at the Library Make-a-Wreath Fun This winter brought a full schedule of seasonal programs to the Bellingham Public Library, and children weren’t disappointed with the offerings.

Gingerbread mania is such a popular program that it was held twice, both times to a full house.

Whether it’s the storytelling of children’s librarian Steve Fowler as he reads The Gingerbread Man

gingerbread cookies and candies for decorating, it’s one of the most popular events of the season.

After the story, each participant got a gingerbread cookie, a bag of frosting, and a small cup to fill with candies, and they were off to decorate. Each finished cookie was as individual as its creator, and all participants left with smiles on their faces.

The Bellingham Library community room was filled with people focused on making their own holiday wreaths. Materials were supplied, and Ana Mendes, of www.afonsoway.com, provided instruction in how to make the simple wreaths.

Within an hour or so, everyone walked out with seasonal decorations for their homes, or to offer as gifts. One participant planned to lay her wreath at her brother’s grave. This program was supported by the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library.

Rook Fulfills a Promise, Writes a Novel

Richard Rook, author of the recently published novel Tiernan’s Wake, explained at a recent author talk at the Bellingham Public Library that he had made a promise 50 years ago. He was in high school when he made the promise, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edwin O’Connor had visited Rook’s English class for several days to work with the young students on their writing. At the end of his time with the students, O’Connor asked that each of them sign a pledge that he or she would someday write a novel. “I looked in the mirror one day and realized that I didn’t have forever, and if I was going to write that novel, I had better get started,” Rook recounted.

Luckily for us, he finally followed through on his promise, since Rook’s first novel is a real pageturner in which we are introduced to a mysterious character who reveals just enough of what he has in mind to keep everyone, including the narrator of the story, guessing. The narrator has done genealogical research that goes back to the 1500s, and this mysterious character offers to pay top dollar for the research, but only if the narrator and his wife come to Ireland in person. And thus the story, a genealogical mystery (who knew there was such a thing?), begins.

Rook professed that, in retrospect, much of the story he wrote is autobiographical. He has been a lawyer much of his adult life, like the character Michael Tiernan. He has done extensive genealogical research into his Irish roots. And his wife, Dyan Rook, now retired, taught art for many years at Bellingham High School. Tiernan’s wife, Sara, in the book, is an

artist.

Rook is already more than half finished with his sequel to the story. “I’ve discovered that killing off characters you want to get rid of is kinda fun,” he admitted with a grin. Rook shared some of his own family story of a grandfather who immigrated to this country from Ireland, leaving six brothers behind there. “My grandfather was the only one in the family who spoke English,” Rook explained. “The Quaker Society that sponsored him to come here required those coming to be able to speak English. He had worked in England for a while and had been able to learn English, and the others had not done this. They spoke only Gaelic.”

Rook also explained that when he went to Ireland for the first time, in 2016, he met cousins he never knew he had, and they told him, “You never left—see, you’ve come back.”

Rook talked about the craft of writing, noting that he kept in mind an important lesson he still remembers from working with O’Connor those many years ago. “Edwin O’Connor told us that at some point you just have to finish. I kept trying to remember that; I’m a tinkerer, so I had to finally just tell myself, ‘It’s good enough.’”

I work with the quarterbacks and he responded well all year to my loud and disciplined style. We both enjoy winning and he’s truly a great competitor.”

Archibald, whose eight-year record at BVT is 8116, always looks for motivational ideas to impart to his players and he found the ideal tool in two movies.

Archibald watched the Rocky movies after the Mashpee setback, and the more he viewed “Rocky I and II” the more he realized how much BVT’s situation aligned with the movies’ theme. He told his players to watch them and they did. The underdogs were about to become the favorites and the “Yo, Adrian, I did it!” moment became “Yo, Derek, we did it!”

front and “Rocky II” on the back. “That was a team thing,” Archibald said. “You had to be in our circle to know the significance.”

Yancik’s death at 49 was a huge motivating factor, but in his pre-game pep talk Archibald was careful about invoking his name. “I didn’t want to use my friend’s death to win a football game,” Archibald emphasized. “It’s a fine line to walk. I didn’t want to cheapen his memory; however, I did remind the kids that we were playing for a special friend.”

Yancik taught heating and air conditioning at the tech school, and he coached the offensive and defensive lines. “Derek was a tremendous guy,” Archibald said. “He was ill last year, but he showed up for the Mashpee game. We wanted to win it for him then, but we’re glad we did this time. The kids openly talked about him and they wanted to win the Super Bowl in memory of him.”

Reflecting on Yancik, Archibald said, “We miss him every day. He just meant so much to our program and so much to our kids. We set out to dedicate this season to him and it couldn’t have ended on a better note.”

Another aspect that became a big plus for BVT was a chance at redemption. The 22-16 loss to Mashpee left a bitter taste. For a year, the Beavers’ desire was to take care of business the second time around. And they did, rallying for 11 straight victories after losing their opener to Millbury, 13-7, in overtime. Playoff wins over Assabet, Leicester and Wahconah were emphatic statements that they were on a mission.

“Our kids treated the game against St. Mary’s like a business trip,” Archibald said. “They were selfmotivated, focused and locked in. That was their mentality. They wanted to finish the job and they felt that anything less would be a disappointment.”

Waiting in the tunnel to run onto the turf at Gillette gave Archibald a positive feeling that Dec. 1, 2018, was going to be the Beavers’ day. “We were waiting for the first bowl game to end,” he recalled. “The kids didn’t care about the venue or the delay. During that 25-minute wait, they had a stoic, businesslike look on their faces. They were ready.”

Greater Milford Community Chorus Is Calling All Singers Do you love to sing? Were you in your high school chorus or church choir and have thought of singing in a chorus again? If so, join us, the Greater Milford Community Chorus, and share your love of singing.

Some of our exciting highlights in 2018 have been the following: singing with the very talented New England Tenors in concert in March, our spring concert in early May and our December concert, a mix of holiday and winter songs. To round out our 2018 year of song, the chorus was again chosen to offer choral selections with the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra Holiday Pops Concert in December at the Grand Ballroom of the historic Milford Town Hall, as well as the beautifully restored Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

In addition to the chorus, we also have an outreach group, Melody & Harmony, which performs at outside venues within our community. The group is made up of chorus members who volunteer to participate as the events arise.

Rehearsals for our 2019 spring-season show,

“Broadway Matinee,” featuring favorite shows from Broadway, begin January 2nd and will be held each Wednesday, 7:00-9:30pm, at the Memorial Hall Cultural Center, 30 School Street, Milford.

We will be accepting new members January 2nd, January 9th and January 16th. Come and sit in on a rehearsal to see if the GMCC is right for you.

Performance is scheduled for Sunday, May 5th, and will be held in the Milford Town Hall.

While we do not require an audition, a rudimentary understanding of music and a willingness to work to benefit our sound is required. Chorus members come from many towns in the Greater Milford area and Rhode Island.

A membership fee of $25 for the season will be charged. There is a $20 refundable fee for your music, which will be refunded when the music is returned at the end of the season.

The New Year is upon us along with our individualized commitments and resolutions to be better, do better and live better.

What is it about this annual timeline that makes us think about where we are falling short and how we can make up for shortcomings? Whether your plan is to eat less chocolate or be kinder to a neighbor, each of us needs to ask ourselves how we will remain accountable so that we aren’t repeating the same ones next year.

The Senior Center is also making some New Year’s Resolutions, promises of providing extra-ordinary service to our senior community members and of creating and holding space for people to visit, a space that will leave them feeling better about themselves and more capable of dealing with life’s stressors. Who is going to keep US accountable? We hope that anyone who is reading this will be involved in this accountability effort.

The past six months—the amount of time I’ve been at the Senior Center—have been a whirlwind. Every day I continue to be blown away by the amount of enthusiasm and dedication our volunteers have as they decorate, organize our baked goods for distribution, sort through donations, declutter storage bins, prepare gift baskets, serve meals, care for members of our supportive day program, send out cards of healing, and everything else.

The words “Thank You” don’t ever seem to be enough, but I hope to never tire of saying these two words that express deep gratitude from all of us at the Senior Center who benefit from the volunteers’ hours of service. Each of you (and you all know who you are, far too many for me to name) has provided us with service from the heart, something that

There is another group of people that has been incredibly gracious since my arrival. The Senior Center staff have spent hours educating me on all things related to the services provided and how things work around here—and believe me, some things are quite complicated. Each of them has made me feel welcomed and supported, and for that I am so grateful.

Our Senior Center family lost a very important member this past month. Gordon Curtis, long-time volunteer and past president of the COA, passed away on December 3. I was fortunate enough to have met Gordon, having sat with him for lunch on a few occasions engaging in a few conversations.

Everyone I’ve spoken to about Gordon has shared stories of a gentle man who, for many years, cared deeply about our Senior Center through his volunteer efforts and sound advice. Gordon’s spirit will always remain intertwined with the Bellingham Senior Center’s past, present and future success.

Speaking of future success, we have building expansion plans on the horizon with hopes of having architectural design proposals ready for the Town Meeting in October of 2019. We will be asking for a large sum of money at that town meeting and will need your votes in order to ensure our tax-paying seniors get their fair share of the town’s tax pie.

May joy, health and happiness be present in abundance for each of you in 2019, and may the Senior Center continue to be a place that brings you additional joy, health and happiness in the new year.

When Baker returned to Bellingham High in 2013 after a 12-year stint as A.D., he enjoyed immediate success as the school’s sports chief. June 14, 2014, is a date he’ll never forget. On that day the baseball team won the State championship at Holy Cross in Worcester, and his softball squad captured the State crown at Worcester State. Coach TJ Chiappone’s baseball contingent defeated Monument Mountain and Baker’s softball team topped Grafton. “That day was so special and so memorable,” Baker emphasized. “I was so proud of what our student-athletes achieved.”

Another day, May 21, 2014, also was dynamic.

On that date and on his watch, Bellingham High won TVL titles in baseball, softball and boys track.

Chiappone Injured in Hoop Team’s Opener

The Bellingham High boys basketball team won its opener, 49-40, over Nipmuc Regional but the victory was costly. Senior co-captain Corey Chiappone suffered a dislocated elbow 43 seconds into the game.

The point guard, who is being counted on to direct the Blackhawks’ offense this season, was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester after he was injured. Chiappone was hurt as he was diving for a loose ball and collided with a Nipmuc player, causing his right elbow to get caught in a pileup. He likely will miss four weeks.

“I’m pleased the diagnosis wasn’t a broken elbow,” Chiappone said. “I’m aiming for a Jan. 18 return. I’m really glad I can be back for the last part of the season and also pleased I’ll be okay for baseball.”

As for the game, Nipmuc jumped out to a 9-4 lead but BHS bounced back at intermission, leading 23-17. Trailing, 33-32, to start the final quarter, the Blackhawks got hot and outscored the Warriors, 17-7, for the triumph. Consecutive baskets

by Ethan Carr, Justin Crayton and Tate Pike in the final quarter lifted the Blackhawks into a 3833 lead, which they never relinquished. Michael Reissfelder led BHS with 10 points, Jack Buckley had eight and Tyler Warren chipped in with seven.

“The kids picked me up after Corey got hurt,” said coach TJ Chiappone. “They responded nicely and we got good contributions not only from our younger players, but also from our veterans.”

A 51-41 victory over Hopkinton in their second game left the Blackhawks at 2-0 to start the season. They were led by sophomore Tate Pike’s 16 points. Tyler Warren, another sophomore, had 10 points and junior Jack Buckley contributed 8. “We played three quarters of strong defense,” Chiappone said. “Tate and Tyler gave us solid play and we’re also getting contributions from a lot of other players.”

BHS Six Rallies for a Tie in Opener

The Bellingham High ice hockey team bounced back for a 2-2 tie in its opener against Minuteman Vocational, then lost to Dover-Sherborn, 4-1, in its

Tri Valley League kickoff.

The Blackhawks trailed Minuteman Voke, 2-0, but got power-play goals from forwards Jake Houston and Jace Rudolph with less than five minutes remaining in the contest. Forward Matt Pelletier assisted on both goals. Against Dover-Sherborn, BHS fell behind early, 4-0, and couldn’t recover.

“The team rallied nicely against Minuteman Voke,” coach Joe Robidoux said. “They showed determination and it was a good character game.”

How Other BHS Teams Fared

The BHS girls basketball team dropped its first three games of the season, losing to Ursuline, Nipmuc and Hopkinton on the road. “We had scoring opportunities in all our games but had trouble converting on drives and layups,” said coach Megan Puopolo. “Liz D’Augustino has given us solid efforts on defense and rebounding.”

The boys and girls track teams both opened their seasons with losses to Medway and Dedham. For the boys, Brandon Murphy won the mile against Medway; Dan Kurczy won the 1000 against Medway and took first in the mile and two-mile against Dedham (his mile and 1000 times were freshman records); and Andrew Keeler finished first in the shot put against Medway and was second against Dedham.

On the girls side, Haylee Morrison managed a pair of second-place finishes against Dedham in the 55-meter run and the 300. Jordan Houston

scored points by finishing third in the 1000 against Medway and second in the mile against Dedham.

She also was part of the winning 4x400 relay team that battled Dedham.

The wrestling team bowed in its Tri Valley League opener, 42-18, to Holliston.

BHS Runners 7th In All-State Meet

The Bellingham High boys cross-country team finished seventh with 199 points at the Division 2 All-State Meet in Westfield on Nov. 18. Newburyport took first place with 61 points and was followed by Seekonk with 119 and Mount Greylock with 145.

The Blackhawks’ top finisher was Ethan Carr in eighth place in a time of 17:12. The other BHS runners who placed were Brandon Gillcrist at No. 49 in 18:23; Brandon Williams at No. 72 in 18:38;

The season-ending meet capped off another highly successful fall season for the Blackhawks.

They won the Tri Valley League Small Division championship, finished second in the TVL meet, then won the Division 6 meet for the second straight year.

BHS coach Peter Lacasse was pleased with the seventh-place finish, considering all the wrinkles his runners tried to iron out. The first snag was changing the course from Northfield to Westfield.

Then, the runners had to adapt to competing in three inches of snow. The event was moved back a day and the Blackhawks had to compete without their No. 3 runner.

“You never know how kids are going to react to change,” Lacasse said. “The course in Northfield was not fit to run on, so the meet was moved to Stanley Park in Westfield. Our kids had never run in snow but they competed in three inches on the course in Westfield. Because the venue was changed, the meet had to be run a day later, on a Sunday. Missing Cam Hasselbaum was another adjustment. But the kids did well in spite of the changes and showed lots of mental toughness.”

BHS Defeats Norton on Keeler’s FG

Bellingham High’s football team ended its 2018 season with a 9-7 victory over Norton on Thanksgiving Day, thanks to senior John Keeler’s 24-yard field goal with two seconds left in the contest. The triumph enabled the Blackhawks to finish their campaign at 3-8, and the victory ended the Lancers’ 10-year winning streak against BHS. Norton took the lead four minutes into the second quarter when the Lancers’ Nate Sicard ran for 35 yards to the Blackhawks’ two-yard line, setting up quarterback Tyler Elliott’s two-yard rush for the game’s first TD. Senior running back Evan LaRoche (offensive MVP) cut Bellingham’s deficit to one (7-6) with a two-yard TD run late in the quarter.

The winning kick came on second down from the seven-yard line as the Blackhawks opted to go for the field goal.

“It was the seniors who wanted him to kick it for the win,” coach Dan Haddad said. “Jim Kilduff (defensive MVP) said that ‘Keels’ could make it, and all the players were nodding in agreement.

So I told Keels, ‘It’s your game, go.’ He’s the most unselfish guy I know, such a great team player. I’m so happy for him; he deserves this.”

Haddad commented on the squad’s overall season, saying, “This is something to build on.

Being in just about every game and just being one play away gets very frustrating. These seniors never turned on each other and never missed a practice. Even when our injuries started mounting, all those injured players were always there.

They may not have the wins that were expected, but they have such a strong work ethic and more character than anyone I have ever met. I’m proud to be their coach.”

Scouts Hold Successful Christmas Tree Sale

Troop 100 had another very successful Christmas tree sale fundraiser last month. The boys decided to spice it up and make it fun for families while shopping for their perfect tree. They offered families free pictures with Santa and his head elf, Clementine. They had cookies, hot cocoa, candy canes and a mailbox for children to mail their letters to Santa. Much fun was had by all! Thank you for supporting our annual tree sales fundraiser.

The scouts from Troop 100 also earned community service hours while helping the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry prepare baskets for Christmas for families in need.

They planned their monthly camping trip to Camp Yawgoog in Rockville, RI, where they persevered through a five-mile hike, cooked their meals outdoors and played games as a group. This trip was a little different in that it was not the usual tent camping; it was cabin camping. They enjoyed this trip and will plan this again in the future.

Currently, they are carving their cars to prepare for their indoor races. Troop 100 hopes you all had a wonderful holiday season and we wish you a happy and healthy new year.

Umpiring Is What Makes Jeff Parker Tick

written by KEN HAMWEY, Bulletin Sports Editor For Jeff Parker, umpiring isn’t a job; it’s a way of life.

The 57-year-old Bellingham resident is well-known around the Tri Valley League, not only for the adept way he calls a game, but also for his detailed approach to assigning umpires for all 12 teams in the circuit.

Parker assumed the role as the TVL’s assigner in 2008, and his disciplined and professional style is respected from Norton to Norwood and from Dedham to Dover. A perfectionist, Parker directs a staff of 70 umps who know what’s needed to be successful in the culture he’s created.

“As the umpire-in-chief, I demand professionalism, preparation and knowledge of the rules,” Parker said.

“The staff must understand that every game they umpire is important to someone. Professionalism means being on time and being well dressed.

Preparation speaks for itself and so does the rule book.”

Twenty years ago, in 1999, Parker started to umpire games in the Bell-

ingham Youth Baseball Association and later became the group’s coordinator. After taking a course, he became a certified umpire and that led to officiating high school games in 2001.

When the assigner position opened in the TVL in 2008, he was hired and has been scheduling crews for games for the last 11 years.

“Dennis Baker, the former athletic director at Bellingham High, informed me that the position was vacant,” Parker recalled. “I applied and was hired to assign umpires for all the schools in the league. That meant assigning umps at the varsity, jayvee, freshman and middle-school levels, and it also involves handling any complaints that

Parker, who’s lived in Bellingham for 27 years, deals with fallout in a commonsense way—he listens to all those involved.

“I’ll listen to the coach, his athletic direct o r, a n d t h e umpire, then assess the situBULLETIN photo by Pauline Hamwey ation,” Parker said. “I’ll follow through with a decision and most likely I’ll support my staff; but I’m also objective, especially if action needs to be addressed. If a situation occurs where rules need to be interpreted, I’ll get involved.”

Parker, however, wants parents of players and all local baseball fans to realize that the vast majority of his TVL umpiring staff are conscientious perfectionists. “They relive the games they call daily and they try to improve their skills,” he noted.

Parker said his staff is well aware that “they can be scapegoats when things don’t go well for a particular team.”

And Parker and his crews know when they’re at their best. “That’s when a game ends and fans walk away with no complaints and no backlash,” he said.

“That means we’ve done our job well.”

During his 27-year career, Parker has had a plethora of assignments— in 2006, he umpired 138 games in a four-month stretch. Some of his most memorable games involve tourney contests.

“Umpiring no-hitters is always exciting,” he noted; “but two assignments I was delighted to get were the Division 4 State final between Cohasset and Georgetown at Fraser Field in Lynn in 2011 and the Division 4 State semifinal between Abington and Mashpee at Rockland Stadium in Rockland in 2015. Mashpee and Cohasset won those games.”

Parker, who’s been officiating high school football games for 17 years, still assigns umps for Bellingham’s youth program, and he’s also the assigner for Medway’s youth league, the Central

Mass. Senior Babe Ruth League and the Metro-West Over-28 League.

“What fans should know is that I don’t just run a two-man team onto the field,” Parker said. “Umpires have to have instruction, on-field training, re-certification and rule-book savvy.

My job requires putting the best umps possible in key games.”

What can be a bit frustrating for Parker is the weather—inclement weather that produces rain, lightning, and even snow. “When an A.D. calls to tell me his game is off, I have to reschedule it,” Parker said. “At times, it can be stressful and overwhelming because of the volume of changes.”

A native of Milford, Parker played football and baseball for the Scarlet Hawks. A guard in football, he was a reserve lineman. He played the outfield in baseball his junior year and was used primarily as a pinch-hitter.

“I was an average athlete,” he said.

“My claim to fame was trying to block Howie Long in practice. He went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL and now is a TV analyst.”

Graduating in 1979, Parker enrolled at North Adams State, where he majored in English and communications. “I had my own radio show and wrote for the college newspaper,” he recalled. “After graduation in 1983, I worked as a substitute teacher at Blackstone-Millville Regional. Later, in 1984, I took the civil service test and became a corrections officer. I worked in that role for 23 years, mostly at MCI-Norfolk and briefly at MCI-Cedar Junction.”

After retiring in 2007, Parker worked security details in high schools that included Ashland, Milford, Hopedale and Marlboro. Now fully retired, he stays busy with his umpiring duties.

Married for 33 years, Parker and his wife, Debra, have three children.

“Umpiring is my passion,” he emphasized. “I can’t imagine not being involved with it.”

Officials in the towns and the leagues where Parker labors diligently no doubt are glad that he remains passionate about what many would consider a thankless job.

Jeff Parker is a major asset for baseball locally because of his devotion, desire and dedication to make the game the best it can be.

Lynch and Steeves Now Share a Championship Bond written by KEN HAMWEY, Bulletin Sports Editor Katie Lynch and Natalie Steeves have a lot in common, but the way these two Bellingham natives wrapped up their varsity soccer careers at Mount St. Charles and Blackstone Valley Tech, respectively, not only had a happy ending, but it also put them directly in the spotlight.

Lynch and Steeves were born and raised in Bellingham, both went to South Elementary and the Memorial Middle School, and then both opted to attend high school elsewhere. They played youth soccer in Bellingham and later sharpened their skills at the club level. The girls, who are 18-yearold seniors and played as midfielders, live about five minutes from each other and they’ve remained friendly.

When Massachusetts and Rhode Island conducted their interscholastic soccer tournaments last November, Lynch and Steeves saved their best for last.

The 5-foot-2 Lynch scored the tying goal in the State final against Pilgrim High of Warwick, forcing two overtimes. With the score still knotted at 2-2, after the o.t. sessions, penalty kicks were needed to determine the outcome. the contest, and her team eventually won, 4-2, capturing the first State title in Mount’s history.

MSC advanced to the State final by defeating West Warwick and Moses Brown.

Lynch’s first goal was a hard shot from 18 yards out, beating the goalie to the lower left. Her penalty-kick goal beat the goalie again on the left.

“Getting the first penalty-kick goal helped get us off to a positive start,” said Lynch, who also excels in basketball and lacrosse. “Winning the State title is the top thrill of my career. It’s the icing on the cake. A lot of hard work at practice is what led to this accomplishment, and it’s a big deal to have helped win the first girls State championship in soccer for Mount.”

Lynch, whose style focuses on patience and adept passing, has all the attributes needed for success. She may not be fast but she’s a smart player, definitely a competitor with a high soccer IQ. She’s also instinctive and has superb field sense. “I like to pass the ball, and my shot is hard off my left foot,” Lynch added.

The outcome for BVT and the 5-foot-5 Steeves (pictured right) also had some drama. No vocational school had ever won the Central Mass. Division 3 Sectional Tournament but, when the Beavers blanked rival Nipmuc, 1-0, thanks to Steeves’ goal, BVT shattered the voke-school jinx and was finally in line to order a championship banner. The Sectional crown may not be as dynamic as a State title, but for Steeves it provided lots of joy.

“It was such a thrill to win the Sectional,” Steeves said. “All the seniors were so happy, jumping up

and down at the end. We were so pleased because we all knew this was our last year playing together.”

BVT advanced to the State semifinals but lost to South Hadley, the western section champion. The Beavers arrived at the Sectional final by downing Bay Path, Quabbin and Sutton, and it was Steeves’ stellar play during the season that helped the Beavers to eventually face off against Nipmuc.

BVT Announces First Trimester Commendation List

Superintendent-Director Dr. Michael F. Fitzpatrick has released the following Commendation List for the first trimester of the 2018-2019 academic school year at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School. Try a Wild Winter Trek at West Hill Dam

Did you really see a bobcat track? Do foxes hide their rear paw tracks and how? Learn a great way to tell in a hurry. What chores did you have to do today to survive? Are you wearing your favorite hat, earmuffs or clothes? How do animals at West Hill Park and Dam survive in winter? Can you see a red fox or coyote at West Hill year-round?

Join Park Rangers on Sunday, January 13, at 2 PM, at the West Hill Dam project office, 518 East Hartford Avenue, Uxbridge, for a wild winter trek.

Scout Troops are welcome and may work on merit badges. Level-2 Junior Rangers will earn wildlife credit. Visitors should dress for the weather (event will be cancelled for heavy rain or snow).

If nature has already provided snow, visitors may bring snow shoes if they like.

Participants need to be able to walk about a mile and may bring binoculars, field guides and a water bottle. Youth under the age of 17 are asked to please bring an adult.

Steeves scored the game-winner with six minutes left in regulation. “I sprinted toward the goal, took a pass from Emma Ballard and beat the goalie from about seven feet out,” Steeves recalled. “That game will always be so memorable. It was my best overall effort.”

The future for both girls no doubt will be bright because both are good students (Steeves is a National Honor Society member). Lynch isn’t sure where she’ll attend college but plans to major in marketing, possibly at Roger Williams University.

Steeves, whose course focus at BVT is in culinary arts, plans to attend Johnson & Wales and major in food science.

Neither is definite about playing sports in college. Steeves would zero in on soccer but Lynch could choose soccer, lacrosse or basketball. She’s a high-scoring point guard who averaged 15 points as a junior and is only 300 points shy of 1,000. A four-year varsity player in three sports, she scored 50 goals last year in lacrosse as a midfielder. Lynch also has been a captain in all three sports.

Both Lynch and Steeves are on the same page as competitors. They play to win but they also strive to reach their potential and to enjoy their athletic experiences, and both girls understand the valuable life lessons that sports can provide.

“Athletics teaches the value of teamwork,” Lynch said. “Respect for coaches and teammates also can be learned along with being able to overcome problems or adverse situations. Our soccer coach (Phil Pincince) stressed that it’s ‘we not me’ when we compete.”

Steeves says sports have helped her to better organize and manage her time. “Sports also help to build relationships, to be resilient, to overcome adversity and to be responsible,” she emphasized.

Katie Lynch and Natalie Steeves do indeed have a lot in common. They’ve traveled similar paths and they’ve excelled at the most opportune time by helping their schools capture soccer championships.

They’re not only top-notch student-athletes, but they’re also dynamic ambassadors for Mount St. Charles and Blackstone Valley Tech.

BVT Announces Charity Dinners

FNC Celebrates 10th Anniv. with Science Comics

Polar bears, planets and brains! Friendly Neighborhood Comics celebrates its 10th anniversary with the creators of Science Comics. Meet Jason Viola, Zack Giallongo, Jon Chad, Rosemary Mosco and Alex Graudins on Saturday, Jan. 26, 12–3 PM.

The Science Comics line of graphic novels explores our natural world (and beyond) in an exciting and informative way. FNC (www.FriendlyComics.com) is located in Bellingham at 191 Mechanic St./Rte. 140, next to Rapid Refill. (See ad on page 17.)

Students from the Blackstone Valley Tech Skills USA Chapter and Culinary Arts Program are once again hosting a series of fundraising dinners to benefit several charitable organizations and causes. The dinners are held in the student-run Three Seasons Restaurant located on the BVT campus at 65 Pleasant Street in Upton.

Each all-you-can-eat dinner is held on a Thursday evening and consists of a themed buffet, dessert, and beverage. The following dates and themes have been selected for the spring 2019 series: Jan. 10–Roast Pork; Jan. 31–Meatloaf; Feb. 28–Roast Chicken; April 4–Baked Fish; May 9–Porketta.

Proceeds will benefit the Be Like Brit Foundation and the BVT SkillsUSA Chapter.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children under 12. Dinner seatings are scheduled for 5 PM, 5:30 PM, and 6 PM. Seats are limited and reservations are required.
