PPAL Offers Help for Parents of Children with Challenges

An Evening with Jon Mattleman The Bellingham Board of Health, in cooperation with the Bellingham School Dept., is sponsoring speaker Jon Mattleman

The Bellingham Parent Support Group would like parents of children with challenges to know “you are not alone!” The Bellingham Parent Support Group is a free and confidential group for parents, caregivers and guardians of children, adolescents and young adults with social, emotional and behavioral health challenges.

The group meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month, 5:30—7 pm, in the Bellingham Library Children’s Program Room, 100 Blackstone Street. Residents from all towns are welcomed. Light refreshments will be available.

Please note that these meetings are for parents only; no childcare will be available.

Jon Mattleman received his B.A. from Clark University in 1978 and his MS in Counseling from the University of Hartford in 1981. Jon’s workshops and presentations are geared to give participants tools they can implement immediately, strategies that work with children and youth, and approaches which have proven to be critical to building healthy relationships. Jon frequently consults with schools, parent groups, mental health organizations, and in workplace settings regarding the issues of stress, depression, and suicide. He is a certified trainer in QPR Suicide Prevention and has worked with professionals in schools, with state organizations such as the MA Probation Dept., as well as with hundreds of parents. Jon is best known for his talk “The Secret Life of a Massachusetts Teen,” which he’s presented to thousands of parents in all over New England. Town Administrator Denis Fraine alleviated some concerns by pointing out that the Macy property is zoned residential; therefore, a large retail store or other commercial business could not be built on the property without zoning changes approved at Town Meeting. Selectman Jerry Mayhew said that he would not support any zoning change that would alter the character of the neighborhood.

He noted that his three children went to Macy and he has the same feelings regarding keeping the integrity of the property.

The abutting neighbors at the meeting agreed that they would like to preserve the playground and ballfields, if possible, since the community put a lot of work into building them.

Soter explained that the Town Planner had walked the site and had estimated that 10-18 homes would fit on the property without keeping the playground and fields, or 5-6 homes, if they are preserved. Residents were concerned with where children in these homes would attend school, since the remaining two elementary schools could soon become overcrowded because of other construction projects slated throughout town.

Selectman Michael Connor said that the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission has completed a study that indicates that although Bellingham’s MACY’S FUTURE–continued on page 5

MACY’S FUTURE–continued from page 4 population is expected to increase in the next few years by 1400, student population is predicted to decrease. Connor noted that the population of Bellingham is aging, but older people are opting to remain in their homes.

Selectman Don Martinis said that he would like to keep as much green space as possible, while building small two-bedroom, one-story homes or condominiums for people over 55 and create a garden for the seniors living there. He said that many seniors would like to stay in town, but they are having difficulty maintaining their homes. He would like to see another option for affordable housing for seniors that would put their current homes back on the market for young families.

The neighbors supported a small group of residential buildings or a senior-living facility while maintaining green space. Members of the Selectmen agreed, although they noted that there will

be give and take somewhat on the town’s wish list and the reality of what builders are willing to bid for the project.

Soter said that if they vote at the October Town Meeting to appropriate funds to demolish the building, the plans for the entire property would still have to be discussed at a series of meetings with a subcommittee set up to explore all the options and any decision would require approval at a future Town Meeting. He encouraged residents to stay involved, come to the meetings and disregard all the false rumors flying around on social media.

The Board voted 5-0 to place the appropriation of funds to raze the building on the October Town Meeting warrant. This would include a hazmat team and a licensed site inspector to remove the asbestos tile and any other contaminants found. I’m very competitive.“ The 23-year-old Perry, who hopes to play softball in her leisure time and possibly coach, can look back at her high school and college days and smile. The smile will be a reminder of the excellence she demonstrated—not only on a softball field but also in the classroom.

Bellingham Public Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program with Bubblemania!

With the support of the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, children’s librarian Steven Fowler was able to recruit Casey Carle, bubble extraordinaire, for the night’s event.

He later went to clown college, where his slapstick background eventually earned him a role in the Ringling Bros. Show. It was during his time with the circus that Carle mastered his bubble-blowing craft. “The Ringling Bros. Circus has been around for 150 years, and I was told that nothing was new, so I said to myself, ‘there has to be something no one has done before,’ so I developed the first-ever giant bubble routine done in any circus-that I’m aware of,” said Carle. “I realized that I’d found something that I enjoyed doing. The bubbles were colorful and funny and had a lot of character, so I decided I’d do it on the side. It just took off as its own career when I left the circus.” In reference to Carle’s success, he further encouraged kids to “read some books, do some research, and try new things.”

Children’s librarian Steven Fowler originally witnessed Carle perform at Daisy Ingraham Elementary in Westbrook several years ago, which prompted him to reach out to him when he joined the Bellingham Public Library. This year marked Carle’s 4th performance for the town’s young readers. Fowler’s decision to host the age-appropriate performer proved successful in drawing children into a literary atmosphere.

Though the night was mostly reserved for Carle’s performance, the spirit of the event revolved around the library’s summer reading program. The Bellingham Public Library adopted the Collaborative Library Summer Program’s [CLSP’s] national theme, “Every Hero Has a Story.” The CLSP provided the library staff with t-shirts and artwork for www.PlatinumCarpentry.com the reading activities, and Friendly Neighborhood

Brad Swain as the volunteer “bubble boy” Comics owner Ernie Pelletier helped out with the event by setting up a booth with several free books and comic books for the children.

For the summer reading program, children are encouraged to come to the library to pick up an activity packet that includes several ways to win cool prizes, including lining up a bingo on a Superhero Bingo Card, completing an 8-hour reading log, or being a hero in the community by completing good deeds for some of Bellingham’s very own heroes.

Moreover, Fowler encourages people to attend the library’s weekly event, Bellingham Heroes, where each presentation is made by a different hero of the community, whether it be a police officer, firefighter, or veterinarian.

Having several years of experience in his field, Steven Fowler explained his foolproof method to get children interested in reading. “When kids have an interest in a topic, books are an obvious and easy way for them to learn more about that topic,” said Fowler. “If you find a topic that they enjoy, find a book around the topic rather than a book around the reading level.”

Furthermore, Fowler encourages parents and guardians to read as well. “It’s really important for kids to see their parents reading. If parents want to raise a reader, then they should be readers themselves.” Fortunately, Fowler organized an event that created the perfect atmosphere for this type of family bonding.

BVT Grads Launch Next Phase of Training

Equipped with high school diplomas and vocational certificates in their given trades, graduates of the Blackstone Valley Tech Class of 2015 are prepared to take their next steps down diverse career pathways.

As the recent graduates pursue post-secondary education, secure employment and apprenticeships in high-demand fields, and enlist in the military, they are doing so with some valuable assistance in the form of scholarships and awards totaling more than $1.2 million in renewable value. According to Superintendent-Director Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, students use their financial aid to cover tuition at a college or university, while others earn new tools, clothing, and equipment to help them hit the ground running at their new jobs.

“The in-demand technical skills acquired by BVT graduates open numerous options for continued career training,” Fitzpatrick said. “Securing scholarships and awards helps them pursue those options while mitigating their reliance on debt accrual.”

For many BVT graduates, a combination of post-secondary education, workforce experience, and military service is an effective recipe for success. Valley Tech 2015 graduate Eric Peterson of Mendon, for example, utilized his vocational certificate in Electronics and Engineering Technology, employment at Boston’s iRobot, and participation in the ROTC to secure a $180,000 Naval ROTC scholarship. This fall, Eric will begin studying Electrical and Computer Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Many Valley Tech graduates have already entered employment with local companies, while others have entered apprenticeships with the New England Carpenters Training Center and the Iron Workers Union. Fitzpatrick noted that many graduates who enter the workforce or enlist in the military will likely take advantage of tuition reimbursement programs

“Hands-On Learning Week” Was Macy School’s Swan Song

As part of the district’s plan to cut costs and streamline services, the decision was made to close Macy school and relocate the approximately 236 students to Stall Brook and South elementary schools, with the fourth grade moving up to Bellingham Memorial Middle School. Farrell, now a senior at Bellingham High, called his rookie year with the Legion “wicked fun” and admitted to being nervous when he closed out East Side. “I could feel my heart beating, but after my first pitch, I settled down. Since we’re heading for the playoffs, I can’t wait to get started. It would be nice to make a run and get on a roll.”

Milford finished its season at 14-10 and was starting the playoffs at Bulletin deadline. Last year, Milford won the Zone and State championships and missed going to the Legion World Series by a game.
