The clinic is in the old gymnasium of the McCloskey School. Dr. David Tapscott, vice chair of the Uxbridge Board of Health, explained how people would flow through the space. It begins with getting the shot, in one of those 19 booths, then going to an area where you can sign up for the second shot. After that, at a section set aside, you can rest for 15 minutes or so to make sure there’s no adverse reaction to the shot. And then, you exit the building.

More than 75 people from surrounding towns attended the press conference announcing the opening of the clinic. “This is a big day for the Commonwealth and the people of this district,” said Soter.

The Ladies of St. Anne are selling raffle tickets for two adults’ and two children’s Easter baskets in four separate drawings. The adult baskets will include wine, snacks and gift cards for Pandolfi’s Fine Chocolates. The children’s baskets will include stuffed animals and wrapped candy.

Tickets are $1.00 apiece, 3 for $2.00 or 7 for $5.00. They are available from Sodality members until April 3. You can specify either adult or child basket when buying your tickets. Funds raised will go to the Ladies of St. Anne Scholarship program.

The group’s next meeting will take place in the St. Blaise parking lot on April 8 at 6PM and will feature a baby shower to benefit Abundant Hope Pregnancy Resource Center in Attleboro. Members are asked to bring new items for newborn babies such as baby wipes, baby wash, newborn diapers, blankets, diaper rash cream (no baby powder), onesies. And don’t forget your lawn chair and mask!

Church Bell Linked to Paul Revere Facing Major Repair

By KEN HAMWEY, Contributing Writer The 188-year-old bell that resides in the steeple of the First Baptist Church of Bellingham is indirectly linked to Paul Revere, who warned that “the British are coming” as the Revolutionary War got under way.

The church, which was built in 1826 by Malachi and

Appleton Ballard of Medway for $2,600, added the bell in 1833. It was rung on Sundays, but its sound also was heard on other days to alert the community of an emergency. Basically, it was the community’s 9-1-1 alarm.

The bell, which is 36 inches wide and 28 inches high, underwent major restoration in 1988, thanks to Bellingham’s Russell Chase and Ernest Godbout, who each volunteered 40 hours on its repair.

Now, 33 years later, the historic bell again needs repair— on two fronts. Its cradle has deteriorated, making the bell unsafe to ring, and the support beams for the bell tower need to be reinforced with steel. The cost of the project is $17,000.

The price involves lifting the bell off its existing cradle and demolishing the old cradle. Then a new pressure-treated cradle would be fabricated and painted. The existing bell then would be lowered into the new cradle. The beam repair will require the use of a crane to position the steel required to reinforce

The church, which is the fourth oldest Baptist congregation in Massachusetts, welcomes donations to help defray the cost of this major expenditure. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the church, like so many other small congregations, has seen a significant decrease in giving.

Jim Hastings, chairman of the Memorial Day and Veterans Day Committee, is hopeful that when the bell is repaired it can be rung at future ceremonies after the announcement of the names FILE PHOTO of all Bellingham residents who lost their lives in battle.

An inscription on the bell is very telling. It reads: “Cast by G.H. Holbrook, East Medway, Mass.” That indicates a link to Revere.

MUNICIPAL SPOTLIGHT by KEN HAMWEY, Contributing Writer Tracey Taddeo (right) has all the necessary attributes to be the chief animal control officer for Bellingham and Franklin. The 51-year-old native of Franklin, who took the department’s reins when Cindy Souza retired a year ago, is passionate about her role, has patience, and has good instincts on how animals react to various situations. She’s also very compassionate toward those who have to euthanize a pet.

Growing up on her parents’ farm in Franklin, she was constantly surrounded by animals—lots of them. “I was always comfortable around animals,’’ Taddeo said. “We had horses, goats, sheep, pigs and chickens.’’

Taddeo, who has 17 years of experience with the Bellingham-Franklin department, works diligently to ensure that all animals in the two-town area are safe and properly cared for.

“It’s also important that residents respect all kinds of wildlife and know that just because wildlife animals are sighted during the daytime doesn’t mean they’re rabid,’’ said Taddeo, who owns three dogs. “Since the pandemic, our department has been super busy. Because people are working from home or they’re out of work, they see more activity. We’ve been continually responding to calls for unleashed dogs, wildlife in backyards, excessive barking, dogs biting other dogs, and animal abuse.’’

The Bellingham-Franklin department consists of Taddeo; her assistant, Patrick Kelleher; and four part-time employees who work nights, weekends and holidays. When they answer a call and enter a home, especially now, they wear masks and gloves, stay socially distanced, and use hand-sanitizer.

“We often meet outside; if we enter a home, it’s usually to check an abuse claim or to SUBMITTED PHOTO remove a bat that’s entered the house through a chimney,’’ Taddeo noted.

When investigating a call for what might be a rabid animal, Taddeo and her staff follow a specific protocol.

“We look for signs first,’’ she said, “to see if there are signs of sickness or if it’s rabid. We’ll observe animals like a fox, raccoon, possum or coyote. If the animal is acting okay, we leave it alone. If it’s not okay, we’ll take it, if possible, and we’ll assess what’s wrong. It might be injured, rabid, or have distemper (respiratory illness). We may have to take it to a wildlife rehabilitator or it may have to be euthanized. We love animals and we view euthanizing only as a last resort.’’

Taddeo, who’s married and lives in Franklin, is acutely aware that both Bellingham and Franklin are growing communities undergoing development; but she sees development displacing wildlife. “Animals are ending up in TADDEO — continued on next page

camera and took over 1,600 photos, many showcased in his book. After a couple of days, he finally began to settle in to being disconnected from the world, and instead reconnected with that wide-eyed kid inside himself that looks at the world in wonder.

One of the best takeaways was just to be unplugged for over a week and experience something profound.

Jeff’s advice for those with their own mountains is that you can’t climb a mountain; it’s too high. “But you can take a step,” he said, “and then another step. And those steps will start to add up.” Mountains, like goals, can be intimidating, he said, using the example of writing a book. While a whole book might be too much, you can write a sentence, and a sentence can become a paragraph, which becomes a page, which, with other pages, adds up to chapters, “and suddenly you realize you can do this.”

School Approves Proposal for Stormwater Drain at BMS

By ASHLEY KAZIJIAN, Contributing Writer During the March 9th School Committee meeting, Bellingham officials proposed the construction of a stormwater drain on the grounds of Bellingham Memorial School (BMS). This work is part of the larger Route 126 Improvement Project, a $7 million project that is fully funded by the state and has been in the planning phases since 2017.

DPW Director Don DiMartino, along with Town Administrator Denis Fraine and Town Planner James Kupfer, presented a general overview of the Improvement Project and the construction anticipated to begin in the spring of 2022. The project is expected to largely benefit the schools. Some of the improvements include added bike

lanes, sidewalks on both sides, handicap accessible crosswalks, and signalized crosswalks from the Douglas Street and Easy Street area extending to the town center.

Installation of the stormwater drain is a requirement for the project, and the area in front of BMS (by the school’s sign) has been determined as the most viable location.

Stormwater drains are necessary to drain excess rain and groundwater. The proposed location of the drain brought up safety and aesthetic concerns from the school. While another location option discussed was the softball field behind the school, it would result in additional costs as well as loss of the entire softball field.

Superintendent Peter Marano specifically touched on concerns of accumulated still water in close proximity

to the school. In response, officials explained that the catchment area needs to hold water (during and after rain) in order for the drain to work properly. They expect any accumulated water to sit for 48 hours at most before being absorbed and infiltrated back into the ground.

Details of the proposed drain located at BMS could include a 4:1 slope, which would be a very gradual slope with slight mounding. Using a larger area for the drain allows for the more gradual slope and shallow water.

The town will include plans for a surrounding fence and landscaping, which would also be paid for by funding from the state. The School Committee approved the town’s request, and the project is expected to go out for bids in the fall of 2021.

Blackhawks Past & Present: BHS Athletic Hall of Fame Accepting Nominations

The Bellingham Athletic Booster Club, (BABC), the force behind the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, is accepting nominations for induction as part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2021. Conceived in 2017, with inductions in both 2018 and 2019, the BABC had plans to hold inductions for three consecutive years and then every other year thereafter, but COVID-19 interrupted those plans.

Years one and two consisted of a who’s who in Get your Blackhawk history and has run the gamut of players, coaches, teams, and contributors, the four categories MA for consideration. Typically, the response is that one or more of our teams are offering team-specific merchandise (football, hoop, baseball, etc.) but rarely just “Bellingham Blackhawks” with or without the logo.
