Term 4 2021 Compression Calendar First day compression classes

Monday, 22nd November 2021

Important dates Students are required to return to school on Monday 22nd November 2021 dressed in full senior school uniform. Classes for 2021 compression are scheduled from 22nd November 2021 to 15th December 2021.

Students must be prepared for class, focused and committed. The number of lessons and content covered during this four-week period equates to one whole school term. Attendance is compulsory.

NSW Education Standards Authority The Education Act 1990 (NSW) governs the award of the HSC. The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), under this Act, grants certificates to students who comply with the Act and NESA requirements.

You will be considered to have satisfactorily completed a course if, in the Principal’s view, there is sufficient evidence that you have met the following course completion criteria: Principal’s certification of completion of course requirements.

Followed the course developed or endorsed by NESA; Applied your-self with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences provided in the course by the school; Achieved some or all of the course outcomes.

Compression In a compressed HSC model, both the Preliminary and HSC components (including the HSC examination) are completed in one calendar year rather than two. Students are given double the number of lessons in one week. Therefore, each school term in a compressed model is equivalent to two school terms. Absence from class will have a significant impact on a student’s educational attainment, achievement and development. In the case of a number of consecutive days absent, the school will investigate the reasons for the student’s absence. If attendance patterns remain of concern, the relevant class teacher will organise a meeting with parents at the earliest opportunity to identify the issues related to the non-attendance and to plan for improvement with the view to support students.

Travel Policy In accordance with the College travel policy, extended travel leave will not be approved for students involved the compression model.

Research on student attendance Research indicates that poor school attendance is associated with: Lower academic achievement; Leaving school with fewer qualifications; Reduced opportunities for students to learn further limiting achievement and; Missing two days a month is known as chronic absence.

Get ready Students should use their NESA online account to check and remain across personal HSC information throughout the year. Parents are also encouraged to log on to ‘Students Online’ for more information regarding HSC rules and procedures. https://studentsonline.nesa.nsw.edu.au/ Get motivated the following strategies will help keep you motivated. Remember, it all starts with you!

Do your job. Students who succeed are most often those who accept the difficult aspects and remain positive.

Balance your time. Give yourself deadlines for each assessment; consider which task will be more time consuming.

Keep track of your grades. Ask your teacher, read your syllabus, know the weighting of each assessment task.

Show up. Students who do not attend class will do poorly. Do not rely on a friend to tell you what you have missed.

Get to know your teacher.

Honour your school. Go to class on time; do not use your mobile at school since this is a major distraction.

Ask for help. Your job is to learn, and part of learning is to ask for direction.

Force yourself to be accountable. You are responsible for your own learning, take action and be the best person you can be.

HSC Assessment Students will complete school-based assessments, which together contribute 50 percent of the final HSC mark for a course. Assessment tasks are opportunities for many students to show their knowledge and understanding in ways that may not be possible in a written examination.

Plagiarism Your work must be all your own – cheating, including plagiarism, could lead to you receiving zero marks.

Students should refer to the Honesty in Assessment – The Standard guide on Schools Online. This guide helps students to follow good principles and practices in assessments and exams.

HSC Exams The exams are what you study and work towards throughout your HSC year. Your exam results contribute the other 50 percent of your final HSC mark for a course. You will sit written exams at the same time as everyone else in the state studying the same course.

HSC Results Your HSC Record of Achievement will list your HSC assessment mark, HSC examination mark, HSC mark (which is a 50:50 combination of your examination and assessment mark) and a Performance Band for each course you studied. You will be able to get your HSC results online and by SMS. Official credentials will be mailed to you.
