Former CFO, GLY Construction Steve Peterson has been an active leader in the local construction industry for over 27 years, having recently retired from Bellevue-based GLY Construction. Prior to retiring, Steve was GLY’s longtime CFO, a role he greatly enjoyed.

As CFO, Steve was seminal to long-term strategic planning and implementation. He led financing and real estate initiatives, long-term leasing deals, claims and litigation support, and internal management of forecasting and reporting systems. His innovative approach to operations was critical to supporting GLY’s growth to one of Washington’s largest privately-held companies. He was named Puget Sound Business Journal’s CFO of the Year in 2009.

Steve is an alumnus of Washington State University, an avid guitar player, and is deeply involved in the community; including service to Bellevue Arts Museum as board trustee and finance committee chair.

EVENING PROGRAM

AUCTION RULES Upon entry, each guest will be given a bid number. To bid in the silent auction, submit your bid number using the Text2Bid system, either on your phone or with a Tech Support Volunteer, to the item you wish to bid on. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card high with the number toward the auctioneer. Your bid card is located at your assigned table in the Westin ballroom. Either the auctioneer or bid spotter can accept your bid.

By bidding in the live or silent auctions each bidder agrees to the following auction rules.

• A bid acknowledged by the live auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. As well, in the silent auction, designation of your submitted bid by the silent auction official as the top bid is legal contract to purchase that silent auction item.

• Top bidders may pay for their items at the auction cashiering stations in The Westin Bellevue lobby, which is open for regular service at the conclusion of the live auction. We encourage you to pay for your purchases only once, at the end of the live auction.

Payment in full, however, is mandatory at the auction.

• All auction art and experience purchases are subject to a 10% Buyer’s Premium. Auction donations for Raise the Paddle, Golden Tickets, Studio Relic Wall purchases, and drink purchases using your bid number are not subject to the Buyer’s Premium. The Buyer’s Premium helps to offset the Museum’s credit card processing fees, and supports Bellevue Arts Museum.

• Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only.

The top bid amount for an auction item will not be split among bidders who may have agreed to pay a portion of the top bid amount unless all of the payments for the auction are presented to the cashier at the time of payment.

• All purchases are final, and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted.

• The purchaser assumes the responsibility to locate and remove purchases from the Bellevue Arts Museum premises this evening. Purchasers may claim certificate items from the Certificate Table.

• Physical items must be removed from the premises this evening. BAM volunteers will wrap your purchases to take home at no charge to you. Purchased items not retrieved this evening will be kept by Bellevue Arts Museum for a maximum of 30 days. Purchased items not collected by August 1 will be stored off-site at the buyer’s expense. Arrangements to pick up unclaimed items after this evening must be made through Cole Eckerman, BAM Director of Development. Please note, BAM will not ship unclaimed items.

• Bidders who elect at registration to be served under ExpressPay™ system do not have to stand in line to pay for their purchases. Instead, ExpressPay™ guests will have paid receipts for their auction purchases

THE IMPACT OF YOUR SUPPORT: SHUCHI JAIN

From my experience, my generation has been less involved and less interested in museums, even art, often because we are told that we are not good enough—because we are young or because the new generation of teens doesn’t appreciate art and museums properly. Because of this, I personally felt that there was never a place for me at museums, and I think that a lot of teens my age feel the same way.

BAM, however, has had such an open and inviting attitude towards teens. I’ve been a part of the Teen Art Docents and the Teen Arts Council for the past two years and both of these programs have allowed me to get involved in arts and the museum like I never thought was possible.

The whole premise of the Teen Arts Council is to promote teen interest in museums and I truly feel that we have accomplished so much by not only hosting programs where teens get to express their artistic nature and have it acknowledged by a real exhibition, but also by allowing teens to see that they are represented and welcome in these spaces.

The work that BAM allows younger generations to participate in has become a very important part in my life and I hope to see it continued with future generations.

Support Bellevue Arts Museum today to help continue to incorporate teens into its programs and provide unique and rewarding opportunities that have created irreplaceable memories for me and my peers.

Go Hawks! Four guests will attend a Seattle Seahawks game in MG2’s private suite. The game is set for Sunday, October 20 at 1:25 PM versus the Baltimore Ravens, and marks the return of Earl Thomas, former Seahawks Starting Safety.

Last but not least, as a warm up to the upcoming season you will also receive four tickets to attend Seahawks Training Camp at Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

Robert Williams (b.1943), a foundational member of the LA hot rod scene in the 1960s and founder of counterculture art magazine Juxtapoz in the 1990s, is one of the key figures of the feral or low-brow art movement. While his realist paintings sell for well over six figures, his detailed and precise sketches for paintings are works of art in their own right, harking back to his work as an underground comic artist in the 1970s and demonstrating his mastery of traditional artist’s skills. Robert Williams: The Father of Exponential Imagination will open at BAM in October 2019.

Etsuko Ichikawa (b. 1963) was born in Tokyo, but has been a resident in Seattle since 1993. Her extraordinary uraniumglass orbs were a crowd favorite in BAM Biennial 2018: BAM! Glasstastic and the 2008 exhibition, Traces of a Molten State, curated by Stefano Catalani, was her first solo museum exhibition in the Northwest.

Her mighty pyrographs (fire drawings) graced the Museum’s Forum for many years. These ethereal drawings are made by painting with the fire and smoke emitted from hot molten glass, capturing fleeting moments—both in the physical and emotional world.

Schaenexw (Salmon) Daniel Joseph Friday (b. 1975) is a Native of the Lummi Nation and a lifelong resident of Washington State’s Puget Sound region. Drawing from cultural themes and using modern processes, Friday’s work is contemporary in format while maintaining key Native American qualities. Friday has spent the past two decades working with artists such as Dale Chihuly, Paul Marioni, and Preston Singletary. Friday lives in Seattle, where he maintains an independent glass studio. His work can be found in collections around the world. Dan Friday was the winner of the prestigious Samuel and Patricia Smith People’s Choice Award for his work in BAM Biennial 2018: BAM! Glasstastic.

09 Abstract Convolution

Night Start Nicole Gordon (b. 1974) paints pictures and creates environments that remake the visible world according to her own extraordinary post-surrealist sensibilities. Gordon studied at the Lorenzo de’ Medici University in Florence, Italy and received her BFA from University of Michigan. Her richly colored, hyperreal canvases explore the tension that exists between the artificial and the real. Thematically, the surrender to the loss of personal space is a recurring subject of her work, which she depicts through her unforgettable style and phenomenal craftsmanship. Gordon is represented by the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Her solo exhibition at BAM will open in Spring 2020.

Karsten Oaks (b.1986) creates sculptures of timeless yet contemporary beauty, coldworked with cut and epoxied optical glass. The glass is seemingly effortlessly manipulated and polished, creating extraordinary reflective effects throughout each piece. Color is introduced through layers of epoxy, animating and deepening each work. A pupil of glass master Curtiss Brock at the Appalachian Center for Crafts, Oaks has worked with Martin Blank, John Kiley, and Lino Tagliapietra, and is currently the only artist to coldwork with Tagliapietra.

Oaks’ Flexion was one of the standout works in BAM Biennial 2018: BAM! Glasstastic.

11 Decision

Z.Z. Wei (b.1957) has been a Washingtonian and Seattleite for 30 years. During this time, his work has been included in many exhibitions both regionally and around the United States. His style and imagery are heavy with references to Americana. Richly complex, Wei’s paintings are filled with humor and loneliness, peacefulness and pain. They balance on the knife-edge of meaning, tempting those who choose to look beyond the mundane to experience a unique and timeless look at life. Wei has donated Decision from his personal collection to convey his passion and commitment to our local art community. He is represented by Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, NM and Patricia Rovzar Gallery in Seattle, WA.

Growing up under a totalitarian regime, Milan Heger (b.1959) embarked on his artistic career in response to the uniformity of colorless propaganda that surrounded him. His soulful art expression, in the form of performance art and mixed media works, looks for the essence of what makes us human.

David Huchthausen (b. 1951) is a trained architect whose involvement with glass spans four decades, lecturing and studying in Europe and teaching in Illinois and Tennessee. He was one of the first artists of the studio glass movement to emphasize coldworking techniques such as engraving, laser cutting, sawing, laminating, and polishing. Within his crystalclear geometric optical glass forms, Huchthausen encases convex shapes and open bubbles that refract light, reflecting the shapes, and colored glass patterns the artist has applied. A preeminent artist in the BAM Biennial 2018: BAM! Glasstastic, his exceptional sculptures are in 106 museum collections worldwide.

Brent Estabrook (b. 1985) was raised in Washington State and now lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Estabrook is known for his impasto brush strokes and extraordinary color composition, which he uses to evoke a sense of nostalgia. His works encourage viewers to explore the liminal space between discovery and curiosity—an ongoing visual campaign to reinvigorate play and passion in everyday life. Blue, Pink, Green is part of his Playful Impetus series and was painted exclusively for Artful Evening 2019. Brent Estabrook is represented by James Wright Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.

Blue Water Canoe File Under Easy Listening In 2015, David Hytone (b. 1967) began creating what would become a new body of work examining human frailty and the mechanisms we employ to cope with and compensate for our failings, imagined or otherwise.

Soon his focus began to broaden, considering how as individuals and societies we constantly build and rebuild monuments to our existence out of the ill-fitting remnants of our past coupled with the shiny new symbols of our hopeful futures.

Over the past two decades, Steve Jensen (b. 1955) has developed a body of sculptural work derived from his experiences and the landscapes he encounters. The experiences encompass both his heritage and a broader contemporary circumstance. The landscape is our seas, waterways, forests, and mountains. The abundant beauty of the world’s available natural resources and the precariousness of the relationship that we maintain with them inspire him. It is this relationship that powers his carvings. Jensen’s Blue Water Canoe symbolizes a voyage or journey, perhaps the voyage to the other side or the journey into the unknown.
