During our recent interview with "high school sweetheart" Adi and Ernesto we learned how this loving duo passion for music lead them to creat ONE ION. Q. When did you meet and how long have you been playing together now? A. "We met in 2002 and became high school sweethearts, both of us were very much involved in music but we played in separate bands. Later we broke ways in 2008 and Ernesto went on tour with a few different projects. In 2011 we somehow found ourselves back together again and eventually got married. In July 2014 on Ernesto's path to sobriety his therapy group asked if he would play for a monthly BBQ event that they had and he came to me and asked if I wanted to sing for it and we've been writing like mad and playing together ever since." Q. Who are the members in the band and what instruments do they play? A. "Arianie Elcida Hernandez, primarily I do vocals and rhythm guitar and Ernesto Paez primarily does lead guitar but we enjoy experimenting with different instruments/roles and keeping audiences guessing." Q. Where is the band based out of? A. "South Florida" Q. Where did the band get their name? A. "We thought about the many layers to humans and existence and how metaphorically it was like that of the layers of an onion, which at times even brings us to tears! We played around with the word and also applied the Buddhist philosophy of oneness and became, ONE ION."

Q. What are your songs about? A. Arianie- "I feel in most cases there is an underlying theme of duality in my songwriting. The fight between good and evil; seeing between the black and white. Human emotion in general, fear, anger, sadness, love, hope, desire. Personal experiences and growth, the universe and its dimensions, looking within yourself, reaching beyond physical limits, and ultimately finding TRUTH and what I believe to be my TRUTH." Q. How would you describe your music to public audiences if they have never seen you before? A. "Definitely soulful and heart wrenching. It's intense, for the most part the content is not light-hearted. Lyrically it's heavy and musically it's eerie and haunting. It's music created to make you think and feel."

Q. What about your single "Stay Wild"? A. "Stay Wild is certainly an exception because it's a more light-hearted fun loving song, it's the free-spirited side of us." We wrote that song with mass appeal in mind specifically for a promotional company video and ended up really enjoying it." Q. What has been your strong influence to continue performing after so many years passed? A. "Our higher selves." Q. If you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be? A. "More honesty" Q. As an Artist how do you define success? A. To us success is creating good music that is purest to our hearts and sharing it with others. Q. If you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be? A. Halloween costumes used to be a frightful sight to the faint hearted. Over the years, the frightfully spooky and scary characteristics of Halloween costumes and theme parties have diminished. The recent trend is that “spooky” is changing to seductive, breathtakingly beautiful, sexy and classy with a dash of spookiness or maybe no spookiness at all. Classic Halloween costumes include the likes of Count Dracula, Casper, Frankenstein, Vampires, witches, wizards and famous characters from horror flicks that people donned with heavy and loud make-up with traces of red blood on the body to spruce up the fright factor. However, these classic Halloween costumes are being replaced with classy and stylish costumes. In today’s scenario Halloween parties are based on “stylish, sexy and seductive” themes. Costumes like the naughty kitten, sultry girl-next-door, elegantly stylish women from classic English movies, the school girl, angels, princesses, brides and goddesses are kicking in and are becoming increasingly popular with each passing Halloween. Celebrities’ Inspired Trend Celebrities are seen donning sexy, pretty, comical and trendy costumes created their favourite fashion houses and designers. The

trend to have a designer label on your Halloween costume is doing rounds and selling like hot cakes. It’s primarily about “who” you are wearing. And the focus on “what” you are wearing is secondary. Don’t we all want to imitate our favourite celebrity, look like them and dress like them. By following the trends set by them, the face of Halloween as we know it, is now changing. Scary costumes have been brought down a notch by making Halloween costumes look pretty, classy, sexy, comical and elegantly fashionable. Let us take a closer look at these up and coming trends. 1. The Scary Ghosts and Monsters Transform into Beautiful Princesses and Brides Watching the luxurious life of a princess on TV or in a movie rouses a girl’s fantasy like no other. Halloween gives you a chance to be a princess for the day by wearing a shiny crown with your hair rolled up, a splendid gown, elbow length gloves, precious jewels and elegant shoes. It’s like a dream come true to be dressed up so lavishly and you feel like you are living a fairytale for those few moments. IN our quest for the latest trend in pop music we have found Kiesa Rae Ellestad better known as KIESZA. Her smash hit "HIDEAWAY" ranked top ten this summer as a hot dance/electronic song. She made her first US TV debut just last July on CBS "The late Show with David Letterman where she recreated the video in and outside the Ed Sullivan Theatre. Born in January 16, 1989 in Calgary Canada at the age of 16 she took part in the Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS) program and a year later she joined the reserves of the Royal Canadian Navy along with her brother, with whom she became a NavCom (Naval Communicator) It was whilst she was at crew singalongs at the Navy that she taught herself to play guitar. She attributes her time in the Navy as a reason why, in 2008, she gave away 4,500 CDs to Canadian troops serving in Afghanistan. The 25 year old spent part of her teens trying to be a ballerina. Meanwhile, she also entered the Miss Universe Canada pageant. The video for HIDEAWAY was shot in Williamsburg New York in two takes inspite of the fact that the day of the shoot she broke a rib and had to learn five completely dance style with three. How did she managed to be tossed around filming the video with a broken rib is determination although this kept her off her feet afterwards for an entire month. The video is a one take shot as she dances thru the city streets , switching off dancing partners .

Kiesza has a lot of creative projects on the go. There’s the music, there’s the art – she paints, and do sort of surrealist artwork, oil painting and Photoshop artwork. That’s a separate project. And then there’s her fashion. She is also writing a piece of film opera. It’s all contemporary music… the whole thing is sung from start to finish. Kiesza is launching a new album this month and although it is not all dance music by any means; it’s fast and slow and then there’s piano ballads. She is paying homage to that ’90s era, but combined with modern sounds. Kiesza seems appreciative for the massive success of ‘Hideaway’, which has become a cultural event as much as a single, might be considered intimidating. For Kiesza having so many people around the world waiting to hear more is really an amazing feeling. It just makes her want to do the best work she can do. Those Who Don’t Give Up When I was young, I lived in a small apartment with my mom, dad, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. My childhood was very interesting. As a child, my health was never great. At age 6, I began receiving night terrors which I could never comprehend what was happening. But one thing was for sure. My mom would always be next to me, crying as she rubbed my head and repeating “Are you okay?” The sole activity that would keep me calm as a child was art. My craftiness allowed me to have a lot of fun with simple everyday objects. We were never financially stable and couldn’t afford those “nice things.” It wasn’t a big concern because there was potential in the materials around me to create my own “nice things.” I found items around the house and glue them together. I broke down cardboard boxes to use as a canvas. It was fun and I was good at it, but I never forced myself to stick to one type of art. I wanted to experiment with everything. My life became much more complicated when I turned 10. My family was evicted from our home. House to house, home to home, it felt like it would never end. I was unmotivated and couldn’t focus on my art. Then one night, my life went from bad to worse. As I fell asleep, I heard my mom’s voice screaming and crying. Not sure what had happened, I woke up the next day seeing my mom in

in tears. It wasn’t that simple. Taking a look around, I wasn’t home anymore…I was in the hospital. I was admitted the night before after experiencing my first seizure. My mom had to explain to the young me what had happened. I became scared and confused. I didn’t know at the time, that the hospital visits were to become a prevalent part of my life. I lost all hope for a happy life until we found our new home. It gave me the comfort, protection, and inspiration to paint. Things were finally changing for the better. I made a lot of good friends as I entered high school, but my health continued to worsen. I felt drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, headaches and much more. My sweet sixteen may not have been so sweet. It was the same day a lot of my friends were moving away. Our birthday/going-away party was the most intense and emotional experience I had ever felt. That night I ended up having 5 seizures. It took me 2 whole days to regain consciousness. I cried a lot upon waking up because I knew my

gone for good. I mustered up all my strength to go back into school and, at last, joined an art class. I met so many people with so many things in common with me and was able to find a whole new group of friends. Finding my best friend made me happy and at the same time calmed me down emotionally. We drew together every day and like typical young adults in high school, we passed papers to each other in class. But these weren’t notes, they were drawings and doodles. I left school when I was 18 because of my health. It was not the best choice I made, yet I wouldn’t be here telling my story if I haven’t. Regardless, I quickly became depressed. What do I do with my life? These words kept bringing me deeper and deeper into depression. I lost all hope once again. But one day, as I was lying down, I realized I was sick of what I was doing. I didn’t want to be useless. I wanted to be more than just THAT girl with health problems. So I decided to get up off my feet, save money, and start buying some new art

a young artist story From that day on, I started painting more and more. It helped me become a stronger person who isn’t easily bothered by all the little things that don’t matter. At times, I even forget that I was sick. Now I am 25 years old and my health is getting better. My friends and family eventually became customers making special requests for my art. With the money I earned, I would go out and buy myself more material. That’s how I keep myself going. I explored and tried many different styles of art. I found that I really enjoy painting on bigger canvases; my wall for example. I also enjoy using acrylic and black ink the most out of all the types of paint. My most recent discovery and practice is digital art. As a kid, I started painting a lot of landscapes, waterfalls especially, but as I became older, the genres that interested me the most were abstract, horror, and Asian pop art, like Anime. When you have something you are interested in, use it as your motivation. Practice, practice, and repeat. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. I am easily inspired by the art of my friends and rivals and I’m glad it happens vice versa. When I am inspired, the possibilities

of art feel

limitless. I go into my own little world where no one can bother me and I can simply create to my heart’s content. Good music, good view, sunlight, nature, animals and beautiful bright colors are what inspires me and can inspire you too. Find your best environment and use it. My mother is the one person that always believed in me and pushed me to do much more. Even when I was depressed and sick, she will tell me that I still had this gift hidden inside of me. And I will always thank her for that. I taught myself how to paint and everything I learned was by reading books, watching others paint, using picture references and watching videos online. I may not be rich or famous but art is what makes me who I am. I won’t give up so easily again and neither should you.

“Seeing in the Dark” (40”x30”) This painting is one of the most important paintings to me. I made this piece when my family didn’t have electricity in our home for 3 months. My mom cried a lot because we had trouble coming up with the money we owed. I wanted to make this for my mom in hopes that she would smile. My mom loved aquatic animals and it became my inspiration. Dolphins were her favorite and my primary focus in this piece. It was hard painting at night with no strong lighting. I was using the dim street lights that crept through the window into my room. I started by using a light pencil to sketch the outlines. Then I used sponges to dabble on the colors. I used neon and metallic colors to make certain areas pop.

The artist: Coralys Otero On the final reveal, I was able to see my mom’s anticipation all over her face. Her smile and tears made me forget the troubles I had painting in the dark. From that moment on, my mom didn’t lose faith and stayed strong even in the darkest of times. “Night and Day Still Blossoms” (12”x9”)(18”x14”)(12”x9”) The Asian culture has been a strong influence in my life and I wanted to express this with the beautiful image of Cherry Blossoms. Cherry Blossoms also know as sakura are one of my favorite trees. The Cherry Blossoms don’t last long and a full bloom happens over the course of a week. I used acrylic and threw different color paint onto the canvas. Then I took a brush and blended them together. Using a black paint, I created the tree with various strokes. With a medium brush, I took the colors pink, dark pink, and white for the Cherry Blossoms. I never had the chance to see the Cherry Blossoms in person. It is something I wish to do as soon as possible. Until then, I had preserved their beauty in this painting. The Cherry Blossoms bloom beautifully in the day and enhance the stars at night. “Take a Swim in Space” (24”x 35.5”) It was Shark Week and after seeing many sharks, I decided to make my own. Removing the boundaries of the typical water background, I was able to make a beautiful galaxy as its home. I gave the normally white shark belly a colorful twist to make it one with the galaxy. I let my imagination take the wheel

on this one and took each part of the canvas to work. Independents stars at a distance were made using a small brush and flicking the paint at the canvas. The star clusters were created using a fine brush to make sure each star was placed with precision. At the end, the white canvas had become one of the most colorful spaces I had created. “Created by Color” (10”x8”)(12”x9”)(18”x14”)(12”x9”)(10”x8”) This painting is another one of my favorites. I used two of my most inspiring imagery, the Cherry Blossoms and the Octopus Tentacles, and combined it into one overall concept. The 2nd and 3rd images uses strokes that crossed from the upper right to the lower left to create the background effect. The 5th image was created by a sponge and use of a dabbing motion to mix the colors. The 1st and 4th image was created by putting paint onto the canvas and wrinkling up a plastic bag. I pressed down on the plastic bag with a book until it dried. Peeling off the plastic will allow for various patterns created from the wrinkles of the plastic bag. The Octopus Tentacles are elegant as they flow in the water yet strong when it grabs a hold of something. The Cherry Blossoms symbolizes beauty that is in conjunction with the elegance. I tried to convey a different emotion in each canvas using the tones formed with blended colors. I wanted to express that although the emotions may be separated, they are still connected at its core.

With the help of a dedicated group of people Puerto Rico Therapy Dogs are dogs that frequently visit hospital, schools , retirement homes and other places bringing joy to many in need. These pets bring happiness and sunshine to the sick, the elderly and children facing reading challenges thru their paws for reading program. During a recent interview with Mr. Ivan Santiago Luhring Director and visit coordinator at PRTD we learned that this non-for profit organization was created seven years ago by Sheyla Gutierrez. Ms. Gutierrez has been a dog trainer and in her quest to do more with them she traveled to Florida where she studied Canine Therapy in hospitals at Therapy Dogs, Inc. After becoming a tester/observer at this organization Ms Gutierrez decided to return to Puerto Rico and put into practice all of the rewarding learning skills she had learned by creating PRTD. For personal reasons Ms Gutierrez was not able to continue providing the services therefore she passed down the responsibilities to Mr. Ivan Santiago Luhring. Like Ms Gutierez, Mr. Santiago a Dentist who is now dedicated his time to this cause went thru the protocol process becoming himself a tester/observer and today is the director and coordinator of such admirable organization. Puerto Rico Therapy Dogs and their

volunteers operate seven days a week paying visit to to schools, hospital, retirement homes and they organize many special visits. The organization has some 80 dogs registered and about 30 active on a constant basis. For those desiring to have their dogs become Therapy Dogs must know that the dogs must be evaluated for their temper. They must be friendly and they must be allowed to be touched in their ears , paws, tail by other people. They must be tested in situations to determine their reaction in any given situation. Once a series of test visit are conducted and they prove to be good candidates PRTD formulates all the proper documentation which is sent to Therapy Dogs, Inc. so they are officially registered as Therapy Dogs. Upon obtaining their DIPLOMA the owners can independently visit those in need or become part of PRTD. Puerto Rico Therapy Dogs is pleased with the outpoured support of their some 80 volunteers that on a regular basis come forward to make it all happen. PRTD is ruled by Therapy Dog, Inc and volunteers are required to portrait themselves in a professional and responsible manner at al times while being attentive to their dogs and be respectful of each others.space.

Trick or Treat P E T S a f e t y T I P S Attention, animal lovers, it's almost the spookiest night of the year! The ASPCA recommends taking some common sense precautions this Halloween to keep you and your pet saying "trick or treat!" all the way to November 1. 1. No tricks, no treats: That bowl of candy is for trick-ortreaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. If you do suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
