News - Belleville - A kaleidoscope of diversity and colour was seen marching down Front Street Saturday as area residents got loud and proud for the first official Belleville Pride Parade. Belleville Pride co-organizer Eric Hargreaves said Pride in the Park, held at Zwicks Park, has been a low-key event that has been around for a few years, but this was their first official parade. “This will be by far the biggest event we have ever had,” he said at the parade’s rallying point at Empire Square where enthusiastic participants were decked out in technicolour brilliance. Mr. Hargreaves said everyone involved

has been completely overwhelmed with “The city of Belleville, their council and like a very special thank you to go out to all the outpouring of support they have re- the police department have all been just the event’s sponsors because without them ceived from the community. awesome,” he said, adding he would also Please see “Formerly” on page 3

No midway, no problem

News - Melrose - An organizer of the 157th Shannonville World’s Fair said the event was a success despite the fact that the midway provider was a no show. Members of the Shannonville Agricultural Society’s fair board learned that the provider was not going to show up

last Thursday night, less than 24 hours before their flagship summer event was to begin. But what started as a stressful ordeal, turned into a blessing in disguise, said the society’s secretary Debbie Sherwin. Replacement attractions were found last

minute and the event turned into a fair with nothing but local contributions. “We put on the best show we could and we ended up with compliments from people who said, ‘this is a true country fair,’” said Sherwin. Please see “157th” on page 5
