Belleville gets into Pan Am spirit with Torch journey
By Stephen Petrick
Sports - Belleville - The Pan Am Games Torch travelled through Belleville on Friday, as part of one incredibly patriotic and spirit-raising journey. Torchbearers smiled wide, raised the flame into the air, and waved to onlookers as they pounded the pavement to the sound of uplifting music. The relay wrapped up with a lighting ceremony at West Zwick’s Island Park in front of hundreds of fans, many wearing red, waving Canadian flags and screaming at the top of their lungs. “Thanks for being here. Go Canada Go,” said Kenzo Dozono, the final torch carrier for the Belleville event, after lighting the flame on a ceremonial large torch set up on a podium at Zwick’s. Dozono, an internationally renowned karate instructor from Belleville, was chosen by the city to represent Belleville at the lighting ceremony. He was the last of 25 people who carried the torch through the Belleville leg of the 41-day, Ontario-wide journey that leads up to the start of the Pan Am Games in Toronto on July 10. The torch entered Belleville along Old Highway 2 in the east end at around 6 p.m. After a brief stop at Dewe’s Independent Grocer, it continued down Dundas Street, before turning south to enter Zwick’s at around 7 p.m. Zwick’s was also the site of a Sports Expo, hosted by the Belleville and District Chamber of Commerce. More than 20 sports organizations had displays set up at the park, which allowed for a large Kenzo Dozono waves to the crowd from a podium at Zwick’s Island after lighting a cauldron as part of an event to promote the upcoming Toronto Pan Am Games. Hundreds packed Zwick’s for the event, Please see “PanAm” on page 22 which concluded the Pan Am Torch’s journey through Belleville. Photo: Stephen Petrick
