News - Belleville - For the past several years, there’s been a different type of class at Quinte Secondary School. When most people think of high school, images of dusty chalk boards and science class come to mind, but at QSS students in the community leadership class have been making their mark on the community by taking the lesson outside of the classroom. “The class is to create a sense of self-value among students, said teacher Scott Shortly. “It’s to create a sense of community within them based on their behaviour, and based on their actions as opposed to just talking about it. Most recently, the leadership class could be spotted making a difference during Saturday’s Quinte Trash Bash, picking up

garbage with hundreds of other Belleville residents. But for the leadership class, the Trash Bash actually started several weeks ago, when they took it on themselves to have local area elementary schools get involved by cleaning their own school grounds the day before, on Friday, April 25. In total, more than 230 students at Prince of Wales, Harmony, Tyendinaga and Parkdale Public Schools took part in Quinte Trash Bash solely because of the efforts of the leadership class. “I think the biggest realization for them is that there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes, Shortly said. “As soon as they get involved with something like this they realize the planning process, and what’s involved, and who to communicate with and who to network with—all of that stuff.
Shortly said students Makayla Howard, Lindsay Cochrane and Elizabeth Drummond took the lead on inviting
area schools to the Quinte investment for the three students. “If they decide that this is something Trash Bash, and the fact they voluntarily took the task on they’re interested in, they have that Please see “QSS on page B3 just added another layer of

opposing the requested resolution was best expressed by Coun. Tom Lafferty who argued: “We have only heard one side of the story. We haven’t heard from Canada Post. Making the presentation were Trina Elson and Amy Dustin, postal workers from Quinte West and Brighton, who pointed out that mail delivery people have often helped in emergencies, spotted problems and assisted

News – Belleville – There’s more to home mail delivery than just some extra cost, Belleville City Council was told Monday. That was the message of a presentation by two representatives of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, who are opposed to Canada Post’s plans to cut home delivery. Their presentation was supported by a narrow recorded vote. The main concern by those

people to ďŹ nd their homes among other public services. They said postal services in many other nations have found creative ways to raise funds while keeping home delivery, such as postal banking services and more and that lock box complexes have caused problems from frozen access, vandalism, litter and snow removal. They noted that Quinte West and dozens of other Canadian municipalities have endorsed resolutions in favour of maintaining home delivery and urged Belleville to join in.
