Section of Avaya plant to be turned into International Business Incubator By Stephen Petrick
News - Belleville - A large vacant section of Belleville’s Avaya plant could soon be ďŹ lled with businesses from around the world. A federal government funding announcement made on Thursday, April 9, sets the stage for the creation of the Eastern Ontario International Business Incubator. During the announcement the incubator was described as a “campusâ€? for small to medium-sized enterprises. Essentially, it’s a place for international businesses to come and set up small operations which will allow them to pursue more business in North America. In the international business community, such a place is known as a “soft landingâ€? facility. This facility will be Canada’s ďŹ rst certiďŹ ed Ross Rae, the chair of the Quinte Economic Development Commission, presents a gift to Gary Goodyear, the Minister of State for FedDev Ontario, during a funding announce- “Soft Landing International ment on April 9 that sets the stage for the creation of the Eastern Ontario International Business Incubator in Belleville. press release from the Eastern Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation. The incubator, located at 250 Sidney Street (in what was once the Nortel plant), will have 80,000 square feet of ofďŹ ce, manufacturing and engineering space. It was made possible through a $350,000 commitment from the federal government. Those funds were announced by Prince Edward-Hastings Member of Parliament Daryl Kramp during an event at the site, which made it painfully obvious that a federal election is coming up. Gary Goodyear, the Minister of State for FedDev Ontario, attended the event and spoke before Kramp. He dropped the name “Stephen Harperâ€? twice in a speech that touted the Conservative Party’s commitment to helping businesses grow.
