Tears and cheers fill Yardmen as Bulls legacy comes to end
By Stephen Petrick
Sports - Belleville - The Belleville Bulls are history, but they went down with one emotional ďŹ ght. A crowd of 3,194 attended what turned out to be the last ever Bulls game on Thursday, April 2. The Barrie Colts won 4 - 2 to cap a 4 - 0 sweep of the Bulls in the Ontario Hockey League best-ofseven ďŹ rst-round playoff series. With the Bulls relocating to Hamilton next season, it was a sad, but festive, night for Belleville hockey fans. They stood and cheered wildly as the ďŹ nal buzzer sounded. Players on both teams then skated to centre ice and saluted the fans. Adam Bignell, the team’s assistant captain, skated to centre ice, took off his jersey and left it at the centre dot. Fans appreciated the symbolic gesture and cheered loudly as he skated back to the dressing room with his shoulder pads apping and hands raised in the air. “It came to me right at the end of the game,â€? Bignell said. “I was a little hesitant; I didn’t know if I wanted to do it. But I have no regrets, I thought it would be a nice way to ďŹ nish it off.â€? Bignell, an overage defenceman who’s been with the Bulls since 2010,
knows more than most about what the Bulls mean to Belleville. His father, Greg Bignell, played for the Bulls in the 1980s, as did his uncle, Todd Hawkins. “My family has a decades-long connection with the Bulls,â€? Bignell continued. “It’s been a big part of my family. It will be a void; it was emotional. But tonight was awesome.â€? The atmosphere in the Yardmen was similar to the evening of March 26, when the Bulls played their ďŹ nal regular season game to a sold-out crowd. On that night, fans cheered wildly after the game and watched a tribute video on the scoreboard that documented the team’s history. But Thursday’s game was more emotional as fans and players knew it could be the truly last game in the franchise’s 34-year history. The Bulls put up a good ďŹ ght against the heavily favoured Colts. They entered the third period trailing 3 - 1, and a goal by Jordan Subban brought the home team within one and got the Yardmen buzzing. But when Joseph Blandisi scored an empty-net goal with 1:05 to play in the third, fans knew it was Please see “Last everâ€? page 3 Belleville Bulls players salute their fans at the end of the last game in the franchise’s history.
