Board’s lice policy a real head-scratcher say parents By Stephen Petrick

Belleville – Some parents are still scratching their heads over the Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board’s new head lice procedure. The issue has dominated various parent council meetings and social media sites since the fall and it exploded with a fury at the Monday, Feb. 22 board meeting. In January the board enacted a procedure which allows students found with head lice to remain in school. In past years, students with head lice were sent home until the condition cleared up. The reversal in policy prompted a rare delegation request by Samantha Dunkley and Kristy Sinclair, mothers of Prince Charles Belleville School students. Their delegation was accompanied by a rambling 12-page outline that was included in the board’s agenda package. In both the outline and the delegation itself, the women were highly critical of the board and, at times, confrontational. They accused the board of not consulting with parents before making the ruling and claimed that, so far, it is not being followed consistently within the board. “To implement a policy that’s not being controlled properly is very concerning to us,” said Sinclair, who, along with Dunkley, was wearing a

shirt that mocked the school board. It had the board’s logo with the words “A great place to itch” underneath. Both women made it clear they disagreed with the board’s stance that head lice, or the medical condition known as pediculosis, is not a reportable disease and that it’s more appropriately defined as a social nuisance, not a health problem. They argued that head lice can spread and that for parents, it’s very upsetting when they see their children get it. Dunkley said she knows this because she’s experienced head lice in her home before. The women argued that students with head lice should be sent home, so they don’t risk spreading it to others. “This is not what we want,” said Dunkley of the new policy. “It’s not fair to our children. It’s not fair to us.” She also said that a Facebook group she started for parents fighting the issue now has 1,800 members. She added that she has a petition with 1,530 signatures. The delegation ended with a threat of legal action. “We need to protect our homes. We need to protect our children,” said Sinclair. “If you decide not to reverse this, we do have other plans in place. We’re not going away.” School Board chair Dwayne Inch politely thanked the women for the delegation. “We’re always interested About 50 people came out to support Samantha Dunkley and Kristy Sinclair in their delegation to the school board at which they expressed opposition in hearing from parents,” he said.
