By a 4-1 vote Tuesday (Feb. 16), the Scott County Board approved Luke Hennen as the next county sheriff. He will succeed retiring Sheriff Kevin Studnicka. Studnicka will retire May 26 with about 30 years experience, almost 25 of which have been spent in the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. He started his career with the Belle Plaine Police Department. The board deemed Hennen, the sheriff’s chief deputy since Dec. 31, the most qualified can-

didate for the position. Hennen graduated with a degree in law enforcement from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1998. Hennen is back at MSU, Mankato working on his master’s degree in public administration. He expects to complete the work later this year. Gary Shelton, Scott County’s administrator, said Hennen is an excellent deputy who has earned high marks for his performance at every level. Hennen spent 1999 and 2000 working as a road deputy. From

‘Anatomy of Gray’ Shines at State One-Act Play Festival School Earns Coveted Star Rating by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School one-act play group added a 12th star to the program’s astronomical history Thursday when it again excelled at the Minnesota State High School Class 1A One-Act Play Festival at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.

Belle Plaine’s 2016 production of “Anatomy of Gray” was one of three plays out of eight to earn a starred rating at the state Class 1A festival. The one-act play season started with over 200 Class 1A schools wishing for a star. Joining Belle Plaine Thursday in earning a star were Browerville’s “An Uncommon Treasure” and Fillmore Central’s “Oz.” The other participating Class 1A schools were Trinity School at River Ridge, Russell-TylerRuthton, East Central, Hawley and Bagley.

Director’s Comments “When we began the year, I was considering this one-act season to be a rebuilding year because we lost 12 seniors to graduation and only seven underclassmen would possibly be returning,” said Tony Hartmann, who along with Carol Hannon-Orr co-directed this year’s play. “We considered doing a small cast show this year,

Despite being the No. 4 seed and having lost to the other three teams this season at Saturday’s Section 2AA Final Four (semifinals and final) at Hutchinson, it was Scott West capturing its 16th section championship in its 26-year history following victories over No. 1 seed Waconia and No. 2 Hutchinson.

Scott West Posts Back-to-Back Upsets to Get Back to State by Dan Ruud For a second year in a row, the Scott West wrestling team defeated a No. 1 seed en route to winning the Section 2AA Team Tournament. Scott West, which edged top seed New Prague by tiebreaker criteria in last year’s section championship, came from the No. 4 seed this year to post back-to-back upsets at Hutchin-

son Saturday and punch its ticket to St. Paul. Following a 51-14 shellacking of No. 5 seed New Prague in the quarterfinals Thursday night in Jordan, the Panthers set their sights on No. 1 seed Waconia, which had defeated Scott West 33-21 on Jan. 28. Waconia’s only loss in the regular season was against Class 3A superpower St. Michael-Albertville.

That was until Saturday’s section semifinals as the Panthers disposed of the Wildcats 34-23, a 23-point reversal from the Jan. 28 result. Up next was No. 2 seed and host Hutchinson, which was coming off a hard-fought 3029 semifinal triumph over No.
