Bellarmine Preparatory School

OUR MISSION

Bellarmine, as a Catholic college preparatory school in the Jesuit tradition, through dedication to academic excellence and development of the whole person, graduates young men and women of competence, compassion and conscience, who are committed to leadership and service.

Welcome to Bellarmine Preparatory School!

For nearly 100 years, Bellarmine Prep has educated young men and women to be compassionate and competent servant leaders. Our Catholic, Jesuit education is inspired by the life of Jesus; it is His values that guide us in all that we do.While rigorous academics are central to our identity, our greatest calling is to instill a passion for leadership and service in our graduates.

As a school rooted in the Jesuit tradition, we are dedicated to the development and care of the whole person. The formation of our students requires a welcoming and safe environment, an experience that allows students to feel comfortable with who they are as children of Christ, learners in the classroom and contributors to our co-curricular programs.

Our students are the heart of our Catholic, Jesuit mission. With 900 students from across the South Puget Sound region, Bellarmine is a vibrant, exciting community of faith and learning. From athletics to clubs, music, campus ministry, leadership, service trips, robotics, theater, Model United Nations and more –every student finds their passion and home here.

We invite you to learn more about what it means to be a Lion and join the Bellarmine community. We hope to see you on campus!

Join our Lion Pride Join our Lion Pride

Jesuit education is a call to develop the whole person: the head, heart and intellect. Bellarmine recognizes each student’s unique potential, and strives to turn that potential into purpose. Every student is encouraged to have an active role on campus and in the classroom to become the best version of themselves, and to use their knowledge and strengths to transform the world.

“Bellarmine will prepare students to be servant leaders in the community, to be thinkers on how to improve the world for others. Students will be prepared to handle college academically, but also well-grounded in how they think and how they treat each other.”

GRAD AT GRAD

Bellarmine encourages each student to strive for excellence and demand more of themselves by embodying the five characteristics of the Graduate at Graduation: Intellectually Competent, Loving, Open to Growth, Religious and Committed to Doing Justice. These traits stem from the Jesuit philosophy of pursuing the magis, or doing more for Christ and ultimately doing more for others.

“Being part of a Jesuit school not only allows me to grow in my faith, but it also teaches me important values like The Grad at Grad, cura personalis and the magis. I feel supported to become the best version of myself.”

INTELLECTUALLY COMPETENT

Bellarmine graduates exhibit a mastery of skills and understandings that exceed academic requirements for college entrance, and position them to be successful in higher education and as lifelong learners.

of Bellarmine administration and faculty have advanced degrees.

full-time certified counselors who provide college, academic, personal and social-emotional support to students.

Every student uses an iPad to enhance learning, collaboration and critical-thinking to develop the 21st century skills that colleges and employers desire.

Earning College Credit at Bellarmine

Bellarmine offers opportunities for students to earn both high school and college credit (dual credit) by taking courses through Eastern Washington University or Central Washington University’s programs on our campus or by completing standardized exams. All college-earning courses are taught by Bellarmine faculty who work in partnership and are certified by the universities or the College Board.

We offer 31 Dual Credit and Advanced Placement courses.

Bellarmine’s comprehensive curriculum does more than just prepare students for college. Our students benefit from the great and historic strengths of Jesuit education - an approach to learning that emphasizes inquiry, experience, action and reflection.

“Like

Lions, we teach our students to be strong, brave and leaders in the world. We are intentional about how we teach and prepare students for the future.”

In 2022, Bellarmine earned the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science A. This award recognizes institutions with 50% or higher female representation in one of the two AP computer science courses or a percentage of the female computer science exam takers meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population.

Dive Into Research

Bellarmine offers two unique co-curricular opportunities for students to engage in research alongside faculty mentors and professionals in their fields. These programs allow students to distinguish themselves for scholarship opportunities and acceptance into more competitive universities and honors programs.

Marine Chemistry

The Marine Chemistry program is a four-year extracurricular, scientific research program for highly capable and motivated students that is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the environment. Students seek solutions to scientific problems to make the world a better place for all its inhabitants. Students will participate in exciting, original scientific research outside the normal classroom setting and present their findings at symposiums their senior year.

Featured Marine Chemistry Scholar

Tyler Milliren B’23 conducted a research project, “Investigating Subtidal Sea Star Population Trends at Titlow Beach Marine Preserve.” Tyler focused on the Titlow Marine Preserve where he gathered data and tracked the population of local sea stars who have been affected by Sea Star Wasting Disease. Tyler, a National Merit Scholar Finalist, is attending University of Southern California.

Capstone

The Capstone research program entails an independent, in-depth examination of a topic and includes both a written and public presentation. Capstone scholars are guided by a project mentor selected by the student, and are partnered with professionals in their topic of research. It provides students nearing graduation the opportunity to deeply explore an academic area of interest and promotes a real world application. Capstone is likely to be the most challenging and rewarding academic project undertaken by students at Bellarmine.

Featured Capstone Scholar

Ainsley Brogan B’24 is conducting research on the academic and psychological impacts of COVID-19 on early childhood education. She is collecting survey data and information on psychological and behavioral changes in students since returning from distance learning. Ainsley is passionate about researching patterns in early childhood education and her interest stems greatly from her mother who works in education.

ACADEMIC CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

The Academic Center of Excellence is a dynamic learning Center designed to facilitate and enhance student learning. This multi-faceted space serves as an extension of the classroom and offers multiple pathways of scholarship and support to our students.

“I feel supported at Bellarmine by my teachers, my peers and most specifically the ACE. It has been a great resource not only to improve academically, but also it has given me great strategies for life in general to be the best person I can be.”

Jonah O’Callaghan B’24

“I love working with students and seeing them grow and find excitement in learning. I believe that every student is cared for and supported by Bellarmine, we provide the tools, resources and inspiration for our students to become successful life-long learners.”

OPEN TO GROWTH

Bellarmine graduates seek opportunities to stretch their mind, imagination, feelings and religious consciousness, and understand that this growth is vital to their development.

Jesuit education extends far beyond the walls of the classroom. Being a Lion is about more than academics, and students are encouraged to explore the vast variety of co-curricular programs and activities across campus. From theater, to music, to student-led clubs, robotics, cheerleading, the arts, Model United Nations, Student Senate, ASB and more -- there are endless opportunities for students to find their place and explore their passions on campus.

“Being a Lion means being part of a community where you are always accepted and feel supported in academics, athletics and clubs so you can be your greatest self at all times.”

85% of students participate in at least one club or activity. The Bellarmine Robotics team regularly competes in the World Championships, and was ranked in the top 8% in the world in 2023.

The Bellarmine Model United Nations program is invited to conferences all across the country including one at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Bellarmine’s Knowledge Bowl Team placed 2nd in the 4A State division in 2022 and earned 3rd place in 2023.

Can’t find a club you’re interested in?

Students have the opportunity to start and lead their own clubs.

GLOBAL CITIZENS

Bellarmine is committed to forming students who are globally-minded and seek to deepen their awareness of their role and responsibility in an increasingly interconnected world.

In 2023, Bellarmine launched the Ignatian Global Scholars Program and Certificate. The program creates an opportunity for students to engage in courses, service and co-curricular experiences that form global citizens for and with others. The program is the first of its kind to offer students recognition from the Jesuit Schools Network.

The World Language and History Departments offer immersion trips for students as an enhancement to their learning to countries such as Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Mexico, Morocco and Spain. Students experience language and culture, tour sites and monuments, and take steps to becoming global citizens.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

Bellarmine’s award-winning Model United Nations program is one of the fastest-growing and exciting activities on campus. As a part of the Model UN program, students role-play delegates of the United Nations and simulate UN committees to address global problems and issues. Model UN, along with providing access to both local and national conferences, serves as a platform to increase the global awareness of the Bellarmine community as a whole. Its focus is to create a welcoming environment that encourages a multifaceted and diverse perspective of issues facing our world, and inspires students to collaborate to solve our common problems peacefully.

LEADERSHIP

We believe that every Bellarmine student is a leader. Our leadership philosophy focuses on developing students who are passionate about transforming our world and serving others in our community. There are numerous ways for students to serve on campus and beyond through clubs, retreats, athletics, ASB, peer tutoring, mentorship and more.

• Bellarmine offers leadership elective courses that focus on Jesuit servant leadership and campus service projects.

• As part of the Jesuit School Network, Lions have the opportunity to attend leadership retreats with other Jesuit Schools from across the country.

• All new students are welcomed to campus by our Link Crew student leaders who provide mentorship, companionship and support with the transition to the high school and the Bellarmine community.

• In the 2022-23 school year, Campus Ministry offered 267 leadership opportunities to students on our 12 different retreats.

• Student leaders plan and host the Breakaway Retreat for incoming 9th graders each August. The goal of the day is for freshmen to begin their four-year journey of friendship and bonding by meeting new people, and to gain familiarity with campus life before the school year begins.

ATHLETICS

Bellarmine Athletics has a long tradition of excellence, but our program is about much more than winning. Our athletes share and develop their God-given talents for the betterment of others - rather than their own glory.

With 43 teams in 18 sports, 4 non-cut sports, students of all skill levels find their place on a team.

62% of students participate in our Athletic programs.

“I will be attending Notre Dame to play lacrosse next year and I am excited as Notre Dame holds a lot of the same values and academic rigor as Bellarmine Prep. I can’t wait to apply what I have learned here to the next level at college.”

2X Lacrosse National All American

We are part of the SPSL 4A Division, the highest level of competition in the state.

Bellarmine has won 60 State Titles.

Student Athletic Training Spotlight

Bellarmine’s Student Athletic Training Program introduces students to sports medicine and provides unique experiences to treat and diagnose sports injuries. Under the leadership of our athletic trainers, students gain a greater understanding of the role of an athletic trainer, and have the opportunity for hands-on learning in both the training room and on the sidelines of games and practices.

“When athletes get injured they come to the Athletic Training Room and we, the Student Athletic Trainers, are able to help heal their injury and put them back on the field and court to play the sport that they love.”

Easton Glasman B’24

“The Football Program has had a big impact on me personally. Not only did it help me meet all of my long time friends, it has helped me become a better person on and off the field.”

Darien May B’25

In 2022, Boys Soccer and Boys Golf both brought home State Titles.

Girls Basketball has made 10 straight State Tournament appearances.

In 2023, Boys Lacrosse competed in the State semi-finals.

PASSION FOR THE ARTS

The Arts are an integral part of Bellarmine’s mission to educate the “whole person.” Our curriculum offers countless opportunities to experience the Arts in the classroom and beyond. We are dedicated to supporting students as they discover and develop their creative potential.

The Bellarmine Drama program gives students an opportunity to shine on stage or behind the scenes. From acting to building sets, running lights and sound, costume and makeup design, creating posters and advertising, and more, students are involved in every aspect of the shows. We have two main stage productions each year; a dramatic play in the fall and a musical in the spring, in addition to Dramafest, during which students write, direct and perform one-act plays.

“Since being at Bellarmine, I’ve really been inspired to be part of this community. Not because it’s my job but because it truly matters. I get to come to work each day and share the things that I absolutely love. Once I found art in high school, I found happiness and it’s a blessing and fun every day to share this with our students.”

PERFORMING ARTS

Bellarmine’s award-winning Music Department provides an opportunity for students to develop their musical talent and skills on instruments or with their voice. We provide a top-level school band, choir and orchestra experience, while preparing young musicians for college-level music education.

“Bellarmine has a very well respected music program. I really enjoy being part of the program and upholding that legacy. We have an excellent choir director that does a great job of getting us focused on the mission of spreading art for everybody to listen to.”

Cassie Brinlee B’25

LOVING

Bellarmine graduates are selfless in relationships and seek deeper connections where they can share feelings and cherish others for who they are.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Bellarmine is a Jesuit, Catholic high school that welcomes students of all faiths, backgrounds, races and cultures, understanding that we are all more alike than we are different. We believe that learning from one another’s faiths and histories lead each of us toward a better understanding of ourselves and the world.

Our goal is to graduate young leaders of conscience, compassion and competence who will harness their voices as well as their agency to influence and affect positive change for those most in need of justice and equity.

41% of Students Representing Diversity.

Bellarmine has a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion based on the core Ignatian value of “seeing God in all people.” We promote an environment of respect and inclusion of students of all backgrounds on campus. Through our diverse curriculum, numerous service and global travel opportunities, our students are encouraged to seek a greater understanding of individuals of different cultures, races, religions, gender identities and economic backgrounds.

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office helps foster a commitment from the Bellarmine community to embrace and celebrate the diversity of the school’s families and the broader community by providing opportunities to share our differences through activities such as affinity clubs, the African American Summit, the Asian American & Pacific Islander Summit, The Latinx Summit, the Parents of African American Students Association, International Night, discussion groups, workshops, speakers and more.

Note from our Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Barbara Henderson B’77

Multicultural Week

Each year, Bellarmine hosts Multicultural Week to celebrate the many different cultures represented in our Lion Community. Students and affinity clubs from across campus plan and execute all of our events and activities for the week including a Multicultural assembly, cultural fair and an evening of performances and food from around the world. Bellarmine affinity clubs are student-run groups where members discuss their experiences among peers who share a common identity. Through these organizations that celebrate diversity, students develop self-awareness, build communities of support, and work to promote inclusion.

International students enrich the global diversity of our campus. Bellarmine is host to more than 25 international students each year. Recent international students have come from China, South Korea, Japan, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Guatemala, Colombia, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Bellarmine graduates experience God as one who accepts and loves them unconditionally; they also understand and respect their own and other religious traditions.

Bellarmine is centered around the Jesuit concept of cura personalis or “care for the whole person,” dedicated to the development and care of each student’s academic, spiritual, emotional and social well-being.

Bellarmine’s comprehensive, four-year Ignatian Formation program provides a unique experience for students to engage in service and leadership, as well receive academic and social support. Ignatian Formation classes meet every other day, and consist of 20-24 students who stay together through their four-years journey, under the guidance of their advisor and counselor.

IGNATIAN FORMATION CAMPUS MINISTRY

Campus Ministry at Bellarmine strives to strengthen our faith community through retreats, leadership opportunities, service, liturgies, prayer and our four-year Ignatian Formation program. We encourage students to build their discernment of how they can use their gifts to serve others.

» Bellarmine offers a variety of retreats for each grade level to deepen their faith as well as develop stronger relationships with others, including two in the Freshman year.

» 100% of students participate in at least one religious retreat during their time at Bellarmine.

» Bellarmine prays The Daily Examen, a prayerful reflection on the events of the day to detect God’s presence and discern His direction for us.

“We want every student at Bellarmine to know that they are loved just as they are. We want them to feel supported every step of the way and feel empowered to live with a purpose.”

Bellarmine participates in Courts for Kids, traveling to developing countries such as Panama, Nepal and Jamaica to build sport courts for communities and children.

Committed to Doing Justice

A Bellarmine graduate is a person for and with others. Lions are prepared for the day when they will take their place in the community as a competent, compassionate and responsible leader.

Bellarmine donates and delivers Christmas gifts annually to over 50 local families in need through the Adopt-a-Family program.

Bellarmine participates in Courts for Kids, traveling to developing countries such as Panama, Nepal and Jamaica to build sports courts for communities and children.

Each year, Bellarmine hosts our Justice Summit to build awareness of social issues and current affairs in our society. The 2023 Justice Summit theme was “Growing a HopeFilled Future.” Students participated in breakout sessions and hands-on service projects focused on various aspects of sustainability. In addition to planting and clean-up projects, the breakout sessions included experiences such as writing letters to elected officials to advocate for environmental policies, beach cleanups with South Sound Surfrider, installing a chicken coop, worm bins, rain barrels, and beehives at our campus Greenhouse, and an Eco-Examen Hike led by Ben Chu from Gonzaga

“Although our trip was only 10 days, what we did will be remembered for generations. We built not just a court, but history… we interacted with the locals, built friendships and learned about the culture. We truly challenged ourselves and this built character. However, what we have done, what we have seen and participated in, is so much bigger than ourselves.”
