Educators Who Teach

More than Academics

I was fortunate to have an incredible faculty who focused on preparing me to succeed in life. This list includes Helen Vermeychuk, Mark Shields, John Fritz, and Lloyd Johns. The most important principles and values I learned while attending Sanford were not obtained through any specific content but through the constant example my teachers demonstrated daily. They prepared me to be successful in life not by teaching me how to win, but by teaching me how to overcome failure. How to rise above adversity and use it as an advantage—not as vindication. My teachers focused and stressed the process of learning more than the content of what I learned. I learned that grades do not correspond to wisdom. That learning never stops no matter how old or wise you have become. They conveyed the magnitude of developing one’s own character and virtue and taught me how to contribute and believe in something larger than yourself. All of this they achieved not through classroom instruction, but by living it in their daily actions. These lessons cannot be taught in a single classroom setting, only through embodying these beliefs and abiding by their principles day after day. When I graduated from Sanford, I knew I wanted to emulate the same character values and core principles they had demonstrated to me throughout my time at Sanford. —Captain Nicholas Cochran ’06, Space Operations Officer
