GOLF CHÂTEAU DE LA TOURNETTE Golf Chateau de la Tournette is situated 15 minutes south of Brussels, in the heart of the Brabant Wallon country side. Airflats is situated in a modern residential neighbourhood
T
he Airflats area covers 3 districts: Evere, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and Schaerbeek. The residential area of Evere is located in the North-East of Brussels and counts a population figure of 32.000. If you are a resident at the Evere area you will find that nearby, ChaussĂŠe de Louvain which is still a main artery into Brussels when coming from Leuven, has a variety of shops and food facilities on offer. Bordering Evere, the communes of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and Woluwe-SaintPierre have some splendid parks and lakes such as Park Malou and les Etangs Mellaerts to attract your attention. If you enjoy walking or jogging these surroundings will do nicely.

On the other side of Boulevard de la Woluwe you will find the ancient water mill of Lindekemale, dating back from the 12th century. It survived its only predecessors in Woluwe. This place is not only a very attractive site but happens to be an exquisite restaurant. Also the little centre of Stockel is worthwile to visit. The Metro will get you there in no time. Here as well you can visit the local shopping mall with its splendid variety of fashion shops.

The Woluwe Shopping Center, one of the largest shopping malls in Belgium, has some trendy ‘boutiques’ and ‘bistros’ to distract you on a rainy day. A nice chance to do some window shopping and to have a coffee break. A parking surface on the ground floor as big as the commercial area above, makes it so much easier when you come by car. When you prefer to leave the car behind and just come by public transport, the underground station Roodebeek has a direct entrance into Woluwe Shopping Center. From here you have a direct connection to the City Center or other destinations in Brussels. GHEN

Bordering Evere from the other side is Schaerbeek, a commune that counts approx. 112.000 inhabitants. It’s composed of numerous popular and cosmopolitan areas. Here you will encounter some remarkable sites such as Park Josaphat and many well preserved Art Deco and Art Nouveau houses. If you enjoy high standard Italian food, it’s well worth booking a table at ‘La Bucca di Bacco’ at Avenue Louis Bertrand. 9 E1

high standard restaurants, e.g. ‘La Fattoria’, a nice Italian restaurant where you can enjoy your lunch or dinner on the charming patio in summer. The park with its lakes, the Maison Communale (Town Hall) and the tram station are a pleasing sight for the eye. Every Sunday you can stroll around and enjoy shopping at the open market that is held at the Wiener square. E4 11

Zoniën Residence however is situated near the border of the 3 communes: WatermaelBoitsfort, Uccle and Ixelles on the South side of Brussels. In between Bois de la Cambre and Fôret de Soignes (a large forest of 1.200 that stretches over the Brussels, Walonian and Flemish districts) this is an ideal spot for people who enjoy jogging and walking. Watermael-Boitsfort, the bordering commune is mainly a residential district with 25.000 inhabitants. The centre is quite picturesque and has a diversity of

A bit further on the Boulevard du Souverain that will lead you to Oudergem, many international companies parade their architectural structures such as Axa Bank and the round shaped building of Glaverbel.

In springtime it’s worthwhile to have a walk in the Floreal, a residential neighbourhood with small look-a-like cottages where many a Prunus tree flower. At Porte Louise, an area nearer to the City Center, the over-whelming dome of Palais de Justice (Courts of Justice) looks upon the City of Brussels. Between Porte Namur and Porte Louise you will find a part of the Brussels nightlife: hip hangouts, restaurants, cinemas and on the other side of the avenue, many trendy fashion shops. Rue Haute, the typical Marolien high street has one of the most renowned open markets on Sundays, le marché aux puces or the flea market in English. This takes us closer to Place du Grand Sablon which is a treat for antique lovers with its many antique shops and a couple of renowned chocolate shops and restaurants. A place to be seen or as in French ‘ un endroit m’a-tu vu’. In walking distance is Mont des Arts where you can enjoy the serenity of the Contemporary Arts Museum while glancing at masterpieces of the Flemish painters, or if you prefer, the Modern Arts Museum. For some royalty you can have a walk down the Royal Palace, just some steps away. From the other side of Grand Sablon you will enter the tourist City Center of Brussels.
The world-famous Grand Place is not only a delight of medieval architecture, but also a treat for the eye and a mesmerising place to be with its many cosy ‘bitro’s’ such as the Roi d’Espagne, la Maison du Cygne and la Brouette. One street further, Rue des Petits Bouchers offers paradise for food and the magnificent Queen’s Gallery (Gallerie de la Reine) is a fascinating place to walk through. Here you will also be able to treat yourself to some lovely Belgian chocolates at the elegant Neuhaus chocolate shop.

Near Rond Point Schuman where the Berlaymont building is situated (the impressive monument of the EU) you will find Jubelpark where Cinquantennaire, a giant arcade erected by King Leopold the II for Belgium’s 50th independency anniversary, looks over the beginning of Avenue de Tervuren. This magnificent boulevard which is scattered with beautiful chestnut trees along the track of the yellow trams, leeds you to the lovely village of Tervuren where the majestic beech woods of Fôret de Soignes dominate. BRUSSELS BARS – WHERE TO DRINK (AND SMOKE!) Things have changed in Brussels bars since the start of 2010, with much confusion surrounding the new anti-smoking law, which was introduced in somewhat farcical fashion in January courtesy of a typical Belgian compromise and a spectacular legislative cock-up. Once things settle down, what you’ll find, until as far away as 2014 (no one is sure!), is a situation where some bars can allow you to smoke and others cannot. However, even smoking bars have, by law, a no-smoking area – if you can find it. The law basically states that if a bar serves substantial food (not crisps and nuts) it now has to be a no-smoking venue. Plenty of the main ‘expatriate’ bars serve food, so this applies to many of them. So, if you hate cigarette smoke, things are getting better for you. For die-hard smokers, well, it’s a case of tough luck! A third set of bars have created separately ventilated smoking lounges or ‘dens’ to keep the ciggie-lovers if not totally happy, at least not freezing to death or getting soaking wet. Below is a brief guide to some of the best bars in the European Quarter and beyond, so you’ll never be short of a good drink and some friendly company, with or without puffing on the deadly weed. Fat Boy’s Sports Bar and Grill can be found close to the European Parliament and is arguably the number-one sports bar in the city. As well as more than a dozen screens to keep the fans happy, its burger menu is highly thought of too. With the football World Cup happening in 2010, this bar will be the place to be throughout June and early July. Testosterone levels are as high as you’ll get and the terrace gets lively in the good weather. No smoking. 5 Place du Luxembourg, 1050 Brussels. Tel: 02 511 32 66. Kitty O’Shea’s is located opposite the Commission HQ – the Berlaymont – and, as you’d expect, it’s a favourite haunt of journalists and EU officials. Lunches are popular here – try the pie of the day – and after-work drinks pull in the punters too. Named after the great wartime leader, Churchill’s bar is ‘English’ themed, with bottles of Wells Bombardier and Shepherd Neame Spitfire available, just for starters - and often at happy-hour prices too. Live music takes place most weekends, which means that this bar can be an excellent place to party on a Friday and Saturday night. There’s sport too - but, then again, which ‘English’ bar doesn’t have a telly these days? One rare and welcome facility is a pool table upstairs. Monk is a traditional Flemish ‘brown’ bar that is always full of a variety of people, ranging from old ladies with their shopping to young, would-be pop stars and everything in between. The music is booming, the chatter loud and the atmosphere very friendly. Located close to St Catherine church, Monk is handy for the supermarkets and nearby ‘chinatown’. O’ Reilly’s is the biggest Irish bar in Brussels and can be found opposite the stock exchange, or ‘bourse’. It’s on two levels, serves food until 3pm, then reopens the kitchen at 6pm, serving til 10pm. The food is as good as you’ll get in a pub – try the big bowl of Irish stew, for example, or any of the burgers. Meanwhile, fish and chips and the roast Sunday lunch are specialities. A new sealed-off smoking area has been created, although the main bar is now totally smoke free. The Wild Geese is something of a legend with its raucous Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, when party people get down to some serious dancing. But there’s more to this bar than wild nights on the tiles to the sound of a DJ. The restaurant is open seven days - Mon-Friday from 12-10pm and weekends from 12-8pm. Meanwhile, all major sports are shown on large LCD screens. Two outdoor terraces add the final touch. No smoking allowed.
Situated smack on the newly-relaid Place Flagey is de Valera’s Irish bar. Interesting décor includes genuine church relics, stone flagging and a big stained glass window. Traditional food is served all day, there’s a terrace with a view of the lakes and the staff are among the friendliest anywhere. DJs keep everyone happy on lively party nights. No smoking inside.
Délirium Café is rightly worldfamous, given the 1000s of excellent beers on its menu. It can be tough to find, being situated up a small alleyway, but is well worth the effort. There are bars upstairs and down in this true drinkers’ haven. Don’t forget to check out the female version of the Manneken Pis, just opposite the bar on the other side of the alley. The statue’s a bit vulgar, so you may want a strong drink first!
