Whether you are a student wishing to join the Programme and make a difference for your country, or someone with a passion for the future prosperity of South Africa and Africa as a whole, or an organisation keen to contribute to the development of the future leaders of the African continent, you will find the brochure of interest.

As a region, we face many challenges, but there is also the possibility of a bright future for all, if only we can harness the opportunities. THE KLAUS-JÜRGEN BATHE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME A “THEORY” OF GOOD LEADERSHIP – KJ BATHE The pillars stand for Passion, People & Principles, with the synergistic effect of P x P x P.

THE PROGRAMME PURPOSE & SCOPE Every country needs good leadership in key spheres of human activity, in order to ensure a decent standard of living for all its citizens. Africa as a continent is blessed with an abundance of natural resources. However, to realise its full potential, the continent needs a critical mass of principled leaders, committed to proper management of its wealth of resources, to eradicate poverty and unemployment, and improve health and educational facilities for all.

The Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Programme was established at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in March 2014, through a gift donated by Professor KlausJürgen Bathe of Massachusetts (USA). The primary goal of the Programme is to produce graduates with outstanding leadership qualities and a strong sense of social justice, who will go on to play leading and significant roles in business, government, industry and civil society in South Africa and on the African continent.

There are many leadership programmes in South Africa and elsewhere, but this programme is different in that it specifically aims to (i) find, (ii) educate and (iii) nurture talented undergraduate students towards becoming leaders who are able to tackle issues at the national level and uplift their countries for the betterment of all citizens.

Towards this objective, Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Scholarships are offered to promising students enrolled for full-time undergraduate degree studies at UCT. These scholarships are open to all UCT undergraduate students irrespective of discipline, and are normally awarded for a period of two years.

LEADERSHIP COMPONENT In addition to the normal courses of their degree programmes, Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Scholars are required to take additional courses intended to develop leadership qualities. These courses are electives drawn from various academic departments of the University of Cape Town. A minimum of two such courses need to be completed over the period of the degree programme.

In the second year of the scholarship, the students are required to spend up to 6 weeks attached to an approved organization in South Africa, Germany or the USA, which may be a government department, a national agency, a public institution or a large company. The purpose of this attachment is to provide scholars with the opportunity to interact with leaders in various spheres (not necessarily in the same field as their degree studies) and learn through observation how sound leadership plays a crucial role in the successful running of key national institutions.

PROGRESS TO DATE The first phase of the Programme is of duration 5 years (2015-2019). The response from students has been tremendous. More than 350 applications were received from some of the brightest students at the University of Cape Town. Selections are via a rigorous process involving oral presentations and interviews. To date fifty (50) scholars have been supported over this period reaching a significant milestone in the programme’s history. 2020-2025 we hope to see phase 2 increase this number year-on-year to nurturing and growing 200 of South Africa’s brightest minds and future African leaders.

THE KLAUS-JÜRGEN BATHE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME PLANS FOR SUSTAINABILITY By the end of the first phase (2015-2019), a total of 50 students will have graduated from the Programme. This initial phase is wholly funded by the founder of the Programme through a gift to UCT covering full-cost student scholarships, internships, administrative and running expenses.

With funding for the first 5 years secured, we have a future vision of a Programme that eventually supports 30 students at any given time in perpetuity, thus ensuring that the economies of Africa have a continuous supply of excellent young leaders committed to making a difference to their countries. To grow to that level and sustain this output of leaders, we need the support of visionaries with an interest in the prosperity of South Africa as a country and Africa as a global region.

Towards this goal, we are inviting additional sponsorship from governments, national agencies, industry and the business sector, to create an endowment fund of R150 million (secured in a Trust), the proceeds of which will meet the cost of scholarships, internships and running expenses in perpetuity. We are also open to CSI organisations who wish to support or fund individual scholarships within the programme ORGANISATION & GOvERNANCE ï The Programme Director has overall responsibility for the implementation of the Programme, formulates strategies for growth, and provides direction towards the attainment of the long-term objectives of the Programme. ï

The Programme Manager is responsible for managing the Programme office, marketing the Programme, liaising with stakeholders and coordinating all internship activities.

The Programme Administrator serves as the first port of call for students and takes responsibility for the day-to-day administrative tasks of the Programme.

The Advisory Board advises the Programme Director, and comprises the Programme Director (Chair), the Executive Director of the Department of Development & Alumni, a Dean or Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UCT, a representative of the UCT Student Representative Council, a prominent person from civil society, government or the business community, and the Programme Director’s nominee.

The Selection Committee conducts the selection procedure for the award of scholarships, and comprises the Programme Director (Chair), academic representatives of the six Faculties of UCT, a representative of the UCT Student Representative Council, and the Programme Director’s nominee.

THE SCHOLARSHIPS PURPOSE The Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis to selected UCT undergraduate students with demonstrated leadership potential for the purposes of financially supporting the scholars as they continue with their chosen degree programmes at UCT, at the same time developing their leadership potential through additional Programme activities, to better prepare them for eventually taking up significant leadership roles in South Africa or other African countries.

THE KLAUS-JÜRGEN BATHE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME ELIGIBILITY The Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Programme is open to all undergraduate students enrolled in any of the six Faculties of UCT. Students can apply in their first year of study, or after completing the first year. However, there must be only two years of the degree programme remaining at the time of award. The scholar- ship cannot be held for a period of less than two years and will not normally be awarded for a period of more than two years.

While it is expected that the majority of scholars will be citizens of South Africa, candidates from other sub-Saharan African countries are also welcome to apply.

A condition for all candidates is that they must demonstrate a commitment to serve South Africa (or their own sub-Saharan country if not South African) after the completion of their studies.

SELECTION CRITERIA & PROCESS Selection will be made from students who demonstrate potential to be the leaders of tomorrow in various sectors of the economies of their respective countries in Africa, and who show promise to make a significant impact in business, government, industry and civil society of South Africa or other African countries. Students will be selected for this Programme on the basis of academic merit, demonstrated leadership potential, willingness to serve the public and the community, and commitment to the goals of the Programme.

Financial need will also be taken into account, but it will not be an overriding factor.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview, and will be required to speak on a topic of global relevance as part of the selection process. They will be required to demonstrate why they are deserving of the scholarship, and to explain how they see themselves playing a leadership role in their country or on the African continent in the future.

AWARD & CONDITIONS The scholarship offers full financial support intended to cover tuition fees, accommodation, meals and an allowance for books, stationery and transport. The scholarship will also entitle the recipient to an internship in the USA, Germany or South Africa.

Scholars should remain in good academic standing after the first year, as a condition for the renewal of the award for a second year. They must remain commit- ted to the goals of the Programme throughout their studies and strive towards eventually serving the larger society in South Africa or on the African continent in a significant leadership capacity. They will be expected to be role models and ambassadors of the Programme.

HOW TO APPLY Prospective scholars should complete the correct application form for the year in question. This is placed on the Programme website in August of every year, accompanied by a Call for Applications.
