Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning

The VCAL Program The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a valuable and integral component of the Senior School Certificate offerings at Belgrave Heights Christian School. Students can attain a nationally recognised Year 12 qualification with the successful completion of the VCAL program. The VCAL is a two-year alternative to the VCE and is based on applied learning. This means the course is hands-on, and aims to develop a wide variety of skills to prepare students for entry into TAFE, other training or into the workforce. Students will study the following strands: Literacy/Numeracy Skills Personal Development Skills Work Related Skills Industry-specific Skills At BHCS we complete these various strands in an integrated program using Project-Based Learning. Students enrolled in the VCAL course must also complete: An accredited VET training program where they will gain qualifications in their chosen area of interest. A series of work placements (generally four over the two years). These placements are to be one day per week (Wednesday or Friday) and align with their chosen VET course. Students must satisfy the outcomes of all strands to successfully complete their VCAL certificate. Outcomes are stringently controlled via regular panel meetings and internal recording procedures. BHCS currently offers the VCAL (Intermediate) in Year 11 and will be expanding this to the VCAL (Senior) in 2019.
