FR —› « L’art est essentiel pour notre société ». De hauts responsables politiques allemands répètent ce message avec la régularité d’une horloge. Cette vision a fait son chemin ; elle s’est imposée aux ministres de la Culture de ce pays et a été intégrée dans les projets de la Commission européenne. J’ai toujours trouvé comme allant de soi que l’art est essentiel pour notre société.

Mais pourquoi ? La première et la deuxième vague de la pandémie de COVID-19 m’a incité à rationnaliser cette impression, cette intuition. Alors que je tentais de répondre à cette question, je me suis rendu compte que l’art est surtout une expression de notre finitude humaine et de la volonté de la dépasser. L’art est un miroir qui nous montre les limites, les frontières auxquelles nous sommes confrontés en tant qu’êtres humains.

Des frontières que nous voulons explorer, arpenter et finalement aussi repousser. Telle est là sans doute l’essence même de l’art : traduire, montrer ce qui est, ce qui a été et ce qui finalement sera toujours. L’homme n’est-il pas un éternel voyageur ?

Cette vision vaut aussi pour la musique « noble ». Son histoire est celle de compositeurs qui élaborent progressivement un système, tout en repoussant en permanence les frontières. L’exemple le plus parlant est celui du système tonal, présent aussi bien chez Bach que Mahler, en passant par Beethoven. L’intérêt de nombreux compositeurs s’étend toutefois audelà des limites dans le domaine de la musique. Les limites sociales sont également leur terrain de jeu : ils utilisent leur œuvre, leur musique pour décrire notre société, la valider ou la remettre en question. Le Russe Dmitri Shostakovich est l’un des très rares compositeurs qui est parvenu, de manière subtile, à affleurer les limites de la théorie musicale et, sur le plan social, celles du stalinisme, régime communiste oppressif et sanguinaire. Dmitri Shostakovich était à ce point doué pour jouer avec les limites que d’une part, il n’a jamais

été jeté aux oubliettes de l’histoire et que d’autre part, il est jugé à ce point intéressant sur un plan purement musical qu’il passionne encore aujourd’hui l’intelligentsia. Avec ses multiples niveaux de lecture, la musique de Shostakovich apporte une valeur ajoutée particulière, surtout à notre époque. Voilà les raisons pour lesquelles nous lui dédions un festival de quatre jours : « The Other Revolutionary ». Avec Bozar, nous vous proposons dans ce cadre de grandes œuvres symphoniques, complétées par des concerts de musique de chambre de haut vol, des conférences de Brigitte Van Wymeersch, Ruben Goriely et Francis Maes – qui est sans doute le plus grand spécialiste de la musique russe en Belgique –, un projet jeunesse avec orchestre de chambre, et même, en bonus, un concert symphonique de l’Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. Une expérience totale que nous sommes impatients de vous offrir !

De janvier à juin 2022, le Belgian National Orchestra présentera un nombre inédit de premières belges.

Cela en dit long sur notre vitalité et joie de vivre ! La deuxième moitié de la saison démarrera très fort, avec l’œuvre d’un des compositeurs contemporains les plus appréciés dans le monde : Thomas Adès, en résidence cette saison au Belgian National Orchestra mais aussi à Bozar. Place aussi – enfin ! – à la création belge de Laterna Magica, une composition irrésistible de la très populaire Finlandaise Kaija Saariaho.

Une pièce de Sean Shepherd, jeune compositeur américain prometteur, est également au programme. Deux autres œuvres feront elles aussi sensation : Gazebo Dances de John Corigliano (avec sur scène, la légende vivante Branford Marsalis) et le Concerto pour piano de Reynaldo Hahn (avec le pianiste Julien Libeer).

Par le passé, le Belgian National Orchestra avait déjà joué des pièces du compositeur germano-russe Alfred Schnittke, une des personnalités les plus intéressantes du 20e siècle

sur le plan musical. En collaboration avec Klarafestival et Bozar, nous proposons son Peer Gynt, un ballet ambitieux créé à Hambourg à la fin des années 1980. Pour cette œuvre, qui se joue véritablement de toutes les frontières, nous avons choisi une exécution semi-scénique plutôt que concertante. Une jeune équipe, sous la direction du régisseur Mien Bogaert – qui est aussi notre dramaturge attitré – donne vie au drame poétique d’Ibsen, avec la collaboration d’un chorégraphe et d’un vidéaste.

Explorer les frontières, ce n’est pas seulement découvrir une nouvelle œuvre, c’est aussi ne jamais perdre de vue ce qui nous est familier et nous rassure. En février 2022, Roberto Alagna et Aleksandra Kurzak vous régaleront lors d’une fantastique soirée de gala pour laquelle nous investirons la Philharmonie de Paris.

Gil Shaham, enfin de retour en Belgique, donnera le Concerto pour violon n°3 de Saint-Saëns. Pour les Rückert-Lieder de Mahler, nous avons invité la soliste et soprano française Véronique Gens. À la fin de la saison, l’Islandais Víkingur Ólafsson jouera le Concerto pour piano n°21 de Mozart. Une primeur absolue puisqu’il s’agit du seul concert qu’il donnera en Belgique avec un orchestre symphonique – et l’un de ses derniers concerts symphoniques puisqu’il se consacrera exclusivement aux récitals et à la musique de chambre au cours de la prochaine saison. Voilà donc un rendez-vous à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte !

Ce qui me réjouit particulièrement, c’est qu’au cours de la deuxième moitié de la saison, quelques musiciens de notre orchestre retrouveront leur casquette de soliste.

Le trompettiste Leo Wouters assurera la partie trompette du Concerto pour piano n°1 de Dmitri Shostakovich – qui est en réalité un double concerto pour piano et trompette – et notre (nouveau) timbalier et percussionniste Nico Schoeters sera au vibraphone dans les Escapades de John Williams

(du film Arrête-moi si tu peux, aux côtés du grand Branford Marsalis, au saxophone). L’occasion de faire plus ample connaissance avec deux excellents solistes de notre orchestre.

Durant la deuxième partie de la saison, nous avons le plaisir de vous emmener dans un voyage à travers le temps, l’occasion d’explorer le passé et le présent et d’esquisser l’avenir. Vous découvrirez dans cette brochure les escales concrètes de ce voyage passionnant proposé dans le cadre de « Walking Borders ».

Venez voir nos concerts et découvrez comment vivre vraiment et en « pleine conscience » : en allant à la rencontre de ses émotions profondes, parfois bienveillantes, parfois pleines de ressentiments, mais toujours riches en découvertes. Aimer quelque chose ou le refuser : c’est précisément cette tension entre ces deux extrêmes qui fait de nous des êtres vivants.

Hans Waege intendant NL —› “Kunst is essentieel voor onze samenleving.” Duitse toppolitici nemen deze zin met de regelmaat van de klok in de mond. Uiteindelijk vond deze gedachte ook haar weg naar de cultuurministers van dit land en is zij aanwezig in de plannen van de Europese Commissie. Dat kunst essentieel is voor onze samenleving, heb ik zelf altijd als vanzelfsprekend ervaren. Maar waarom precies? De eerste en tweede golf van de coronapandemie zetten me ertoe aan om dit gevoel, deze intuïtie te rationaliseren.

Op zoek naar antwoorden realiseerde ik me dat kunst vooral een uiting is van onze eigen sterfelijkheid en van de wil om die sterfelijkheid te overstijgen.

Het is een spiegel van de grenzen waarmee we als mens geconfronteerd worden. Grenzen die we willen verkennen, bewandelen en uiteindelijk ook verleggen. Dát is misschien wel finaal de essentie van kunst: het weergeven van wat is, van wat was en dan uiteindelijk verdergaan. De mens als eeuwig reiziger.

Dit geldt ook voor de kunstmuziek.

Haar geschiedenis is een verhaal van componisten die gaandeweg een systeem ontwikkelen en daarbij steeds weer de grenzen van dit systeem verleggen. Als meest indrukwekkende voorbeeld geldt het tonale systeem: van Bach over Beethoven tot Mahler.

Vele componisten houden zich naast met muzikale grenzen ook met maatschappelijke grenzen bezig: met hun werk beschrijven ze onze samenleving, bevestigen die en/of stellen ze net in vraag. De Russische componist Dmitri Shostakovich is een zeldzaam voorbeeld van een componist die er op subtiele wijze in slaagde om én op muziektheoretisch én op maatschappelijk vlak grenzen te bewandelen – die van Stalins versmachtende en moordzuchtige communistisch systeem. Zo virtuoos was Dmitri Shostakovich in het spelen met grenzen dat hij – aan de ene kant – nooit geliquideerd werd en – aan de andere kant – puur muzikaal gezien zo interessant is dat hij de muzikale intelligentsia blijft boeien. Zeker voor onze tijd vormt Shostakovich’ meerlagige muziek een bijzondere meerwaarde.

Om die reden organiseren we rond hem een vierdaags festival met als naam ‘The Other Revolutionary’. We werken samen met Bozar dat de grote symfonische programma’s omlijst met hoogkaratige kamermuziek, lezingen van Ruben Goriely en Francis Maes – misschien wel de grootste kenner van de Russische muziek in België, een jongerenproject met een kamerorkest en zelfs een extra symfonisch concert van het Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. Een totaalervaring om naar uit te kijken!

Van januari tot juni 2022 brengt het Belgian National Orchestra een ongezien aantal Belgische premières.

Het is de graadmeter van onze levenslust! We starten stevig met werk van internationaal een van de meest bejubelde hedendaagse componisten: Thomas Adès, dit seizoen in residentie bij zowel het Belgian National Orchestra als Bozar.

Daarnaast brengen we eindelijk de Belgische première van Laterna Magica, een onweerstaanbare compositie van de gevierde Finse componiste Kaija Saariaho. Ook werk van de jonge Amerikaanse belofte Sean Shepherd staat op het programma. Twee andere composities die opzien zullen baren, zijn de Gazebo Dances van John Corigliano (in een concert met de levende legende Branford Marsalis) en het Pianoconcerto van Reynaldo Hahn (vertolkt door Julien Libeer).

In het verleden speelde het Belgian National Orchestra reeds muziek van de Sovjet-Duitse componist Alfred Schnittke, muzikaal gezien een van de meest interessante figuren van de 20ste eeuw. Van hem voeren we, in samenwerking met Klarafestival en Bozar, Peer Gynt op, een grootschalige balletpartituur die aan het einde van de jaren 1980 in Hamburg werd gecreëerd. Dit werk, dat alle denkbare grenzen overschrijdt, voeren we niet concertant op maar semiscenisch.

Een jong team onder leiding van regisseur – en tegelijkertijd onze huisdramaturg – Mien Bogaert wekt Ibsens verhaal tot leven in samenwerking met een choreografe en een videokunstenaar.

Grenzen bewandelen is niet enkel en alleen het ontdekken van nieuw werk, maar ook steeds weer de veilige thuishaven niet uit het oog verliezen.

In februari 2022 zullen Roberto Alagna en Aleksandra Kurzak een fantastische opera-avond verzorgen – een productie die ons ook naar de Parijse ‘Philharmonie’ brengt. Gil Shaham is eindelijk terug in België en speelt het Derde vioolconcerto van Saint-Saëns. Mahlers Rückert-Lieder zijn te horen met de Franse sopraan Véronique Gens als soliste. En op het einde van het seizoen brengt de IJslandse Víkingur Ólafsson Mozarts Eenentwintigste pianoconcerto. Een absolute primeur, want dit concert is zijn enige concert met symfonisch 6

orkest in België – en een van de laatste voor hij een seizoen met uitsluitend recitals en kamermuziek aanvat. Deze afspraak kan u niet missen!

Wat mij ook bijzonder verheugt, is dat in het tweede helft van het seizoen enkele muzikanten uit ons orkest een solistenrol zullen opnemen.

Trompettist Leo Wouters speelt de trompetpartij in Dmitri Shostakovich Eerste pianoconcerto – eigenlijk een dubbelconcerto voor piano en trompet – en paukenist en slagwerker Nico Schoeters speelt de vibrafoonpartij in John Williams’ Escapades (uit de film Catch Me If You Can met niemand minder dan Branford Marsalis op saxofoon). U zal alvast twee uitstekende solisten uit ons orkest in een voorname rol weten te ontdekken.

In de tweede helft van dit seizoen nemen we je graag mee op een reis doorheen het verleden, het heden en schetsen van de toekomst.

Wat de concrete haltes van dit buitengewoon spannende verhaal met als titel ‘Walking Borders’ zijn, kan u in deze brochure ontdekken.

Bezoek onze concerten en ontdek hoe echt en hoe bewust u leeft: met diepe gevoelens, soms goedkeurend, soms verontwaardigd, altijd ontdekkend. Van iets houden of iets afwijzen: net die spanning maakt ons tot levende mensen.

German politicians have long repeated this phrase like a mantra.

The idea has made its way to our country’s culture ministers and now crops up in the plans of the European Commission. The fact that art is essential to our society has always seemed obvious to me. But why exactly? The first and second waves of the coronavirus pandemic prompted me to rationalise this feeling, this intuition. In my search for answers, I realised that art is primarily an expression of our own mortality and of our desire to overcome it. It is a reflection of the borders that confront us as humans. Borders we want to explore, walk along and ultimately also push back. When all is said and done, this may be the essence of art: the representation of what is, what was, and what ultimately lies beyond. The human being as the eternal traveller.

This also applies to music. The history of music is the story of composers gradually developing a system, then continually pushing back against its limits. The most striking example of this is the tonal system, from Bach via Beethoven to Mahler. Many composers are concerned with social borders as well as musical ones: in their work they describe, approve and/ or question our society. The Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich is a rare example of a musician who, in his own subtle way, was able to stretch the borders of musical theory and, on the social plane, those of Stalin’s suffocating, murderous communist system. Dmitri Shostakovich was such a virtuoso at playing these limits that he both survived the system, and was so fascinating from a purely musical perspective that he continues to this day to thrill the musical intelligentsia.

Shostakovich’s multi-layered music is particularly meaningful in our present times. This is why we have organised a four-day festival around him, entitled ‘The Other Revolutionary’.

In partnership with Bozar, the great symphonic programmes are framed by superb chamber music, lectures

by Ruben Goriely and Professor Francis Maes, perhaps the greatest expert on Russian Music in Belgium, a project for young people involving a chamber orchestra, and even an extra symphonic concert by the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. This is an experience worth waiting for!

From January to June 2022, the Belgian National Orchestra presents an unprecedented number of Belgian premieres – a true measure of our exuberance and vitality! We start off strongly with work by one of the most internationally-celebrated contemporary composers: Thomas Adès, in residence this season with both the Belgian National Orchestra and Bozar. We also present, at last, the Belgian premiere of Laterna Magica, an irresistible composition by the revered Finnish composer, Kaija Saariaho. The programme also includes work by the promising young American Sean Shepherd.

Two other works that will attract attention are the Gazebo Dances by John Corigliano (in a concert with living legend Branford Marsalis), and Reynaldo Hahn’s Piano Concerto (performed by Julien Libeer).

The Belgian National Orchestra has previously performed music by the Soviet-German composer Alfred Schnittke, musically one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century. In partnership with Klarafestival and Bozar, we perform his Peer Gynt, a full-scale ballet score created in the late 1980s in Hamburg.

We will perform this piece, which transcends every border imaginable, not as a concert performance but as a semi-scenic one. A young team under the guidance of director Mien Bogaert – who is also our house dramatist – brings Ibsen’s story to life in collaboration with a choreographer and a video artist.

But walking borders is not only about discovering new work; it also means keeping sight of the safety of home.

In February 2022, Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak offer us a fantastic gala evening: a production that transports us to the Parisian

‘Philharmonie’. Gil Shaham returns to Belgium at last to play Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3, while Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder will be performed with French soprano Véronique Gens as soloist. And, at the end of the season, Iceland’s Víkingur Ólafsson plays Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21. This is an absolute coup, as this concert is his only one with a symphonic orchestra in Belgium – and one of the last before he embarks on a season in which he will exclusively perform recitals and chamber music. This date is not to be missed!

What I am also particularly excited about is that in the second half of the season, all the soloists are musicians from our orchestra. Trumpet player Leo Wouters plays the trumpet part in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 – which is, in fact, a double concerto for piano and trumpet – while timpanist and percussionist Nico Schoeters plays the vibraphone part in John Williams’ Escapades (from the film Catch Me If You Can) with no other than Branford Marsalis on saxophone.

Nous tous, musiciens et membres du Belgian National Orchestra, avons été profondément émus par votre enthousiasme et votre soutien ! Notre saison se poursuit en 2022 autour du thème ‘Walking Borders’. Explorez avec nous la musique des quatre coins de l’Europe : Les Planètes de Holst, le Concerto pour orchestre et Le Mandarin merveilleux de Bartók, la Symphonie italienne de Mendelssohn, des lieder de Mahler, des pièces exotiques et colorées de Debussy, Rachmaninoff et Rimsky-Korsakov, ainsi que des symphonies de Haydn et Mozart. La nouvelle musique est également au programme, avec Alfred Schnittke, Kaija Saariaho et Thomas Adès. Mais ce qui me tient tout particulièrement à cœur, c’est le Festival Shostakovich, en février. Au programme, deux symphonies et deux concertos, notamment la Symphonie n°11 dite « L’Année 1905 » et la Symphonie n°13, sous-titrée « Babi Yar ». Celle-ci met en musique la poésie puissante et bouleversante d’Yevgeny Yevtushenko, une symphonie qui a gardé toute son actualité. Rejoignez-nous pour vivre une expérience musicale inoubliable !

Natuurlijk verwennen we u ook met uitstekende solisten zoals Truls Mørk, Gil Shaham, Véronique Gens, Kirill Gerstein, Boris Berezovsky en laureaat van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd 2019, violist Timothy Chooi. Ik kijk vooral uit naar het Shostakovichfestival in februari, met twee symfonieën en twee concerten, waaronder zijn Elfde symfonie, ‘Het jaar 1905’, en Dertiende symfonie, ‘Babi Jar’. Die laatste is de muzikale verklanking van de krachtige, diep ontroerende poëzie van Yevgeny Yevtushenko en zonder meer een symfonie voor onze tijd. Dit wordt een gedenkwaardige muzikale reis en daar nodigen we u graag voor uit!

All of us at the Belgian National Orchestra have been so moved by your enthusiasm and support! Our season continues in 2022 with the theme of ‘Walking Borders’. Explore with us music from the corners of Europe: Holst’s The Planets, Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra and Miraculous Mandarin, Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, songs of Mahler, exotic and colorful music of Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Rimsky-Korsakov and symphonies of Haydn and Mozart.

We feature new music by Alfred Schnittke, Kaija Saariaho and Thomas Adès, a family concert with music of Sergei Prokofiev, and a New Year’s concert celebrating jazz and the Roaring Twenties. Among the soloists you will enjoy hearing are Truls Mørk, Gil Shaham, Véronique Gens, Kirill Gerstein, Boris Berezovsky, and 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition violinist Timothy Chooi. Il y a un siècle, la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale et l’épidémie de grippe espagnole provoquèrent une énorme effervescence. Aujourd’hui, la victoire contre le coronavirus pourrait déclencher un renouveau sans précédent, sur les plans social, économique et culturel.

Le Belgian National Orchestra s’y prépare en jouant, à l’occasion du concert de Nouvel An, des valses, des polkas et des marches de la famille Strauss tout en célébrant les années 1920. La première œuvre au programme est la suite en cinq mouvements Music for the Theatre du compositeur américain Aaron Copland. Cette composition contient beaucoup de musique jazz et de mélodies populaires.

La création du monde est un autre moment fort de ce concert placé sous la direction du chef d’orchestre Hugh Wolff. Darius Milhaud écrivit ce ballet audacieux long d’une quinzaine de minutes en 1922/1923, après avoir découvert le jazz américain à New York. Le célèbre chef d’orchestre Leonard Bernstein qualifia l’œuvre « non pas de simple flirt avec la musique de jazz, mais de véritable histoire d’amour ». The 15-minute ballet La création du monde is another high point of this New Year Concert conducted by Hugh Wolff. Darius Milhaud wrote this daring work in 1922/23, after discovering American jazz in London and New York. The famous conductor Leonard Bernstein described this work as “not a flirtation but a real love affair with jazz”. As befits an early 20th century ballet, its premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris was seen as a scandal.

Prokofiev revisited Family and Friends Concert

FR —› Pour son ballet Roméo et Juliette, le compositeur russe Sergei Prokofiev a écrit une musique symphonique des plus impressionnantes. Certains morceaux, comme la célèbre Danse des chevaliers, ont ainsi été utilisés plus tard comme musique de film. Sous la direction du chef d’orchestre Hugh Wolff, le Belgian National Orchestra interprétera quelques grands extraits de cette œuvre légendaire.

Le jeune créateur de théâtre gantois Mats Vandroogenbroeck assurera la partie scénique du concert, en étroite collaboration avec une actrice et un vidéaste. Qu’est-ce que l’histoire de Roméo et Juliette peut encore nous raconter aujourd’hui ? À l’ère du numérique, l’amour fonctionnet-il encore de la même manière ?

Dans quelle mesure et à quel point les expériences en ligne sont-elles authentiques ?

Dans les mois précédant le concert, nous organiserons des ateliers dans les écoles. Au cours de ces ateliers, les jeunes se plongeront dans les questions posées ci-dessus pour tenter de trouver des éléments de réponse. Le matériel qui y sera créé – textes courts, dessins et même avatars digitaux – fera finalement partie intégrante de la performance.

Sommige delen, zoals de bekende Dance of the Knights, werden later gebruikt als filmmuziek. Het Belgian National Orchestra speelt onder leiding van chef-dirigent Hugh Wolff enkele hoogtepunten uit dit legendarische werk.

EN —› Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote a most impressive symphonic score for his ballet Romeo and Juliet. Indeed, some parts, such as the famous Dance of the Knights, were later used as film scores. Under the direction of conductor Hugh Wolff, the Belgian National Orchestra will perform a selection of major highlights from this legendary work.

The young playwright from Ghent, Mats Vandroogenbroeck, takes charge of the staging of this concert, working closely with an actress and a video artist. What can the story of Romeo and Juliet still tell us today?

Does love still work in the same way in the digital age? To what extent are online experiences truly authentic?

In the months leading up to the concert, we will organise a series of workshops in schools. During these workshops, young people will delve into these questions and try to find some answers. The resulting materials – short texts, drawings and even digital avatars – will eventually be integrated into the performance, in a unique interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic, for and with young people!

Sa création en 2018 pour le Boston Symphony Orchestra connut un grand succès et l’œuvre, écrite pour le compositeur russe Kirill Gerstein, fut immédiatement redonnée à de nombreuses reprises dans les orchestre les plus prestigieux du monde. En trois mouvements, le concerto rappelle parfois la musique de Ravel, Prokofiev, Liszt et Rachmaninoff. Cependant, le recours strict aux formes classiques, les harmonies claires et la montée en tension organique font avant tout de cette œuvre une composition typique d’Adès.

Après avoir été initié à l’astrologie par un ami, le compositeur anglais Gustav Holst s’enthousiasma tant pour le lien entre la position des corps célestes et le destin des hommes qu’il décida de consacrer une œuvre orchestrale de grande envergure sur le sujet. Ce soir, elle interprète avec le Belgian National Orchestra le célèbre Concerto pour violon de Jean Sibelius. Ce compositeur finlandais, obsédé par les légendes, les lacs et les forêts de son pays d’origine, combine ici romantisme tardif et esthétique sonore nordique moderne. Ce Concerto pour violon est incontestablement l’une des œuvres majeures de Sibelius.

This Finnish composer was obsessed with the sagas, lakes and forests of his homeland, and in this work, he combines a late Romantic style with a modern Nordic sound aesthetic. The Violin Concerto is undoubtedly one of Sibelius’ greatest works.

In 1893, Richard Strauss toyed with the idea of composing an opera around the character of Till Eulenspiegel. However, after drafting a libretto, he decided to compose a symphonic poem instead. In terms of content, Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche was influenced by the philosophy of Nietzsche. Through the character of Till Eulenspiegel, Richard Strauss expressed his admiration for the primordial life forces, joyfully saying ‘yes’ and enjoying life on earth to the full.

Marcel Proust Tribute Concert

FR —› La musique joue un grand rôle dans l’œuvre littéraire de Marcel Proust. Là où dans la première partie de son magnum opus, À la recherche du temps perdu, la mémoire du narrateur est activée par une petite madeleine, ailleurs, c’est une sonate composée par un certain Vinteuil qui replonge le personnage principal Charles Swann dans ses souvenirs.

Les spécialistes de la littérature discutent depuis des décennies pour savoir qui a inspiré ce compositeur fictif. À l’occasion du centième anniversaire de la mort de Marcel Proust, le Belgian National Orchestra rejoint le débat sous la direction d’Otto Tausk.

L’un des compositeurs les plus appréciés de Proust était le pianiste et organiste virtuose César Franck, né il y a 200 ans. Nous interprétons ses Éolides, un poème symphonique qui s’inspire du poème éponyme de Leconte de Lisle. Les Éolides sont les filles du dieu du vent Éole : de douces brises vivifiantes qui, lors des soirées d’été, sont comme des caresses sur les joues. Psyché et Éros, l’une des sept parties d’un autre poème symphonique de César Franck, est aussi au programme de la soirée.

Cette œuvre est basée sur L’Âne d’or d’Apulée (seul roman de l’antiquité classique nous étant parvenu) et met en musique l’interdiction de l’union entre Psyché, une fille de roi plus belle que la déesse de l’amour, et Éros, fils de celle-ci.

One of the composers that Proust greatly appreciated was the piano and organ virtuoso César Franck, born 200 years ago. The orchestra performs his Les Éolides, a symphonic poem inspired by the poem of the same name by Leconte de Lisle. The Aeolides are the daughters of the wind god, Aeolus: gentle breezes that bracingly brush past one’s cheeks on a summer evening. FR —› Une magie toute particulière émaille de nombreuses chansons et histoires russes. Le compositeur américain Sean Shepherd y rend hommage dans son œuvre Magiya, écrite en 2013 pour l’Orchestre national des jeunes des États-Unis, qui tournait alors avec Valery Gergiev.

Avec Shostakovich et Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian fait partie des trois compositeurs majeurs de la période soviétique. Né en Arménie, il s’installe à Moscou à l’âge de 18 ans. En 1937, son Concerto pour piano lui vaut une percée internationale et reste aujourd’hui une pièce importante du répertoire. Dans le deuxième mouvement, une scie musicale assure une ambiance magique.

La magie est aussi omniprésente dans le dernier opéra de Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Le Coq d’or, basé sur un poème de Pushkin. Écrit peu de temps après la guerre russo-japonaise – un désastre –, cet opéra utilise une fable pour critiquer vivement l’arrogance des autorités. Le tsar Dodon s’y laisse séduire aveuglément par une despote orientale tout en étant berné par un astrologue qui lui vend un coq d’or. Peu après la mort de RimskyKorsakov, deux compositeurs ont rassemblé les temps forts de cet opéra dans une suite orchestrale en quatre mouvements.

Le ballet-pantomime Le Mandarin merveilleux de Bartók raconte l’histoire de trois voyous dans une grande ville qui ordonnent à une jeune fille de se prostituer. Ses deux premiers clients n’ont pas d’argent, mais elle parvient ensuite à charmer un mandarin, un riche Chinois. Les voyous veulent lui dérober son argent, mais le mandarin semble immortel, comme immunisé contre les blessures qu’ils lui infligent. Ce n’est que lorsque la jeune fille exauce ses désirs que ses plaies se mettent à saigner et qu’il succombe. L’immoralité de l’œuvre provoqua un vrai scandale lors de sa création en 1926 à Cologne.

Toutes les représentations furent annulées par le bourgmestre de l’époque, Konrad Adenauer (premier chancelier de la RDA).

Bartóks pantomimeballet De wonderbaarlijke mandarijn vertelt het verhaal van drie zwervers in een grootstad die een meisje de opdracht geven om zich te prostitueren. Haar eerste twee klanten blijken geen geld te bezitten, maar dan slaagt ze erin om een mandarijn, een rijke Chinese man, aan de haak te slaan. De zwervers willen hem beroven, maar de mandarijn blijkt immuun te zijn voor verwondingen en wil niet sterven. Pas wanneer het meisje zijn verlangens vervult, beginnen zijn wonden te bloeden en geeft hij de geest. De première van dit werk in 1926 in Keulen lokte wegens de amorele handeling een waar schandaal uit en alle verdere opvoeringen werden door de toenmalige burgemeester Konrad Adenauer (later de eerste Bundeskanzler van de BRD) verboden.

Shortly after RimskyKorsakov’s death, two composers compiled the opera’s highlights into a four-part orchestral suite.

Her first two clients have no money, but she then manages to ensnare a mandarin - a rich Chinese gentleman.

The vagabonds intend to rob him but he appears to be immune to injury and refuses to die. Only when the girl fulfils his desires do his wounds start to bleed and he then passes away. The 1926 premiere in Cologne caused quite a scandal due to the characters’ amoral deeds, and further performances were banned by the mayor at the time, Konrad Adenauer (who was to become the first Federal Chancellor of West Germany).

FR —› Pour le Double concerto de Brahms, il ne faut pas un mais deux solistes exceptionnels. Le violoncelliste et le violoniste doivent pouvoir s’affronter à armes égales.

Avec cette œuvre, sa dernière grande composition pour orchestre, Brahms a essayé de se réconcilier avec Joseph Joachim, le violoniste pour qui il avait écrit son célèbre concerto pour violon.

Brahms avait pris parti pour l’épouse de Joseph Joachim à leur séparation en 1880. Sept ans plus tard, Brahms écrivit à Joseph Joachim : « J’ai beau essayer, je ne parviens pas à résister à l’envie de composer un concerto pour violon et violoncelle…

Je n’attends qu’une lettre me disant que tu me pardonnes ». Joseph Joachim prit rapidement sa plume et reçut ainsi quelques jours plus tard la partition du Double concerto.

En octobre 1887, il le créait avec le violoncelliste Robert Hausmann, sous la baguette de Brahms.

Dvorak a longtemps estimé que pour les concertos, le violoncelle ne valait pas grand-chose en tant qu’instrument soliste : « ça nasille dans les aigus et cela grommelle dans les graves. » Il changea cependant d’avis après avoir assisté à New York à la création d’un concerto pour violoncelle composé par un collègue compositeur et violoncelliste, et se mit au travail. Après avoir reçu d’Europe la nouvelle que sa bellesœur – dont il avait été amoureux à une certaine époque – était gravement malade, Dvorak décida de citer « Laissez-moi seule », sa mélodie préférée qu’il avait lui-même écrite, dans le deuxième mouvement de son concerto pour violoncelle. Le troisième mouvement se termine sur un soupir que brise ensuite un orchestre déchaîné. « Si j’avais su qu’un concerto pour violoncelle pouvait être aussi beau, j’en aurais aussi écrit un ! », déclara Brahms après avoir assisté au concerto pour violoncelle de Dvorak.

In oktober 1887 speelde hij samen met de cellist Robert Hausmann en onder muzikale leiding van Brahms de première.

Dvořák beschouwde de cello lange tijd als een instrument dat niet geschikt was voor een solistenrol in een concerto: “te nasaal in de hoogte en te mompelend in de diepte”. Na het bijwonen van de première van een celloconcerto van een collega-componist en cellist in New York, veranderde hij echter zijn mening en toog aan het werk.

Seven years later, Brahms wrote to Joseph Joachim: “As much as I have tried, I could not resist the urge to compose a concerto for violin and cello … When you send me a letter stating that you have forgiven me, I will know enough.” Joseph Joachim replied quickly and, a few days later, received the manuscript of the Double Concerto. In October 1887, he performed its premiere with the cellist Robert Hausmann and under the musical direction of Brahms.

For a long time, Dvořák did not consider the cello as suitable for a solo role in a concerto: “too nasal in the heights and too mumbling in the depths.” But after attending the premiere of a cello concerto by a fellow composer and cellist in New York, he changed his mind and got down to work. The news that his sister-in-law – with whom he had once been in love – had become seriously ill in Europe, led Dvořák to quote her favourite song, his own composition Leave Me Alone, in the second movement of his cello concerto. The third movement ends on a sigh, after which orchestral hell breaks out momentarily. “Had I known that a Cello Concerto could be so beautiful,” said Brahms following a performance of Dvořák’s cello concerto, “then I would have written one myself!”

Alfred Schnittke’s Ballet staged in Bozar

FR —› Edvard Grieg ne fut pas le seul à s’inspirer de la pièce de théâtre Peer Gynt d’Henrik Ibsen : entre 1986 et 1988, le compositeur germanorusse Alfred Schnittke composa, à la demande du chorégraphe John Neumeier, un ballet monumental sur le fils de fermier norvégien Peer Gynt, qui tente de fuir la réalité à coup de mensonges.

NL —› Niet enkel Edvard Grieg liet zich inspireren door het toneelstuk Peer Gynt van Henrik Ibsen, maar ook de Sovjet-Duitse componist Alfred Schnittke. Hij componeerde op vraag van de choreograaf John Neumeier in 1986-1988 een monumentaal ballet over de Noorse boerenzoon Peer Gynt, die met leugens de realiteit tracht te ontvluchten.

Le ballet de Schnittke contient tous les éléments de l’histoire originale de Peer Gynt, notamment sa rencontre avec le roi des trolls.

Certaines scènes sont cependant déplacées à Hollywood, où le joyeux luron norvégien se lance dans une florissante carrière de star du cinéma, à laquelle sa folie des grandeurs mettra fin. Vieux et déçu, Peer Gynt retourne en Norvège. À quoi ont mené toutes ces aventures ? Qui est-il vraiment ? Sa vie a-t-elle eu un sens ou n’a-t-elle été qu’un échec cuisant ?

Schnittkes ballet bevat alle elementen van het originele Peer Gynt-verhaal, daaronder ook zijn ontmoeting met de trollenkoning.

Sommige scènes worden echter verplaatst naar Hollywood, waar de Noorse losbol een succesvolle carrière als filmster weet uit te bouwen. Die loopt na heel wat grootheidswaanzin fout af. Oud en teleurgesteld keert Peer Gynt naar Noorwegen terug. Tot wat hebben alle avonturen geleid?

Wie is hij echt? Heeft zijn leven iets voorgesteld of is alles één grote mislukking geweest?

La musique d’Alfred Schnittke est particulièrement éclectique, à l’instar du récit. Pleine de surprises, elle compte parmi les plus belles œuvres du 20e siècle. Le Belgian National Orchestra interprète cette partition exigeante, programmée pour la première fois en Belgique et placée sous la direction du chef danois Michael Schønwandt. Une jeune équipe dirigée par le metteur en scène Mien Bogaert, avec Talitha De Decker comme chorégraphe, Dennis Peschke comme costumier et Benjamien Lycke comme vidéaste, propose une mise en scène qui pose la question de savoir pourquoi les gens sont si doués pour fuir des vérités inconfortables.

Deux danseurs travailleront avec les personnages de l’histoire originale d’Ibsen, à la fois en direct et dans une gigantesque installation vidéo.

EN —› Not only Edvard Grieg was inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt, but also the Soviet-German composer Alfred Schnittke. At the request of the choreographer John Neumeier he composed a grand ballet in 1986-1988 about Peer Gynt, the Norwegian farmer’s son who tried to escape reality through his lies.

Schnittke’s ballet contains all the elements of the original Peer Gynt story, including his encounter with the troll king. However, some scenes were relocated to Hollywood where the irresponsible Norwegian has a career as a movie star. After a lot of megalomania, this ended badly.

Old and disappointed, Peer Gynt returns to Norway. What have all the adventures led to? Who is he really?

Has his life meant anything or has it all been one massive failure?

Alfred Schnittke’s music is highly eclectic, as is the story itself, full of surprises and among the most beautiful of the twentieth century.

The Belgian National Orchestra performs this demanding score, in Belgian Premiere, under the baton of the Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt. A young team led by stage director Mien Bogaert, with Talitha De Decker as choreographer, Dennis Peschke as costume designer and Benjamien Lycke as videographer, provides a staging that asks the question why people are so good at escaping uncomfortable truths. Two dancers will work with characters from the original Ibsen story, both live and in a gigantic video installation.

De muziek die Alfred Schnittke schreef, is net als het verhaal bijzonder eclectisch, zit vol verrassingen en behoort tot het mooiste wat de 20ste eeuw heeft voortgebracht. Het Belgian National Orchestra voert deze veeleisende, nog nooit in België gespeelde partituur uit onder leiding van de Deense dirigent Michael Schønwandt (toekomstig Associated Director). Een jong team onder leiding van regisseur Mien Bogaert, met Talitha De Decker als choreografe, Dennis Peschke als kostuumontwerper en Benjamien Lycke als videograaf, verzorgt een enscenering die zich de vraag stelt waarom mensen er zo goed in slagen om ongemakkelijke waarheden steeds weer te ontvluchten. Twee dansers gaan aan de slag met personages uit het originele Ibsenverhaal, zowel live als in een gigantische videoinstallatie.

Tribute to the American Symphonic Repertoire

FR —› La légende du jazz Branford Marsalis, grand maître du saxophone, a joué avec Sting et Miles Davis, fondé le groupe Buckshot LeFonque et a mené le groupe du Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Ces dernières années, il se concentre de plus en plus sur la musique classique et se produit régulièrement avec des orchestres de premier plan, dont l’orchestre du Bayerische Staatsoper et le New York Philharmonic.

En collaboration avec le Belgian National Orchestra sous la direction de Dirk Brossé, Branford Marsalis rend hommage au répertoire symphonique américain du 20e siècle avec des œuvres de grands maîtres tels que Leonard Bernstein, John Corigliano et John Adams. Branford Marsalis clôture ensuite le concert avec la première mondiale de Cassandra, un standard du jazz de sa propre composition dans un arrangement pour orchestre et saxophone signé Vince Mendoza.

Ce concert forme le point culminant d’une résidence de trois jours de Branford Marsalis à Bozar. Il se produira d’abord en solo dans la Cathédrale Saints-Michel-et-Gudule, puis en concert avec le Belgian National Orchestra et enfin avec son propre Branford Marsalis Quartet.

Together with the Belgian National Orchestra conducted by Dirk Brossé, Branford Marsalis plays tribute to the twentieth-century American symphonic repertoire with works by great compsoer: Heitor Villa-Lobos, Leonard Bernstein, John Corigliano, John Williams and John Adams. One moment he is a soloist, the next an orchestral musician. At the end, Branford Marsalis performs the world premiere of Cassandra, his own jazz standard that has been arranged for orchestra and saxophone by Vince Mendoza.

This concert is the highlight of Branford Marsalis’ three-day residency in Brussels, where he first plays solo in the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula, then a concert with the Belgian National Orchestra and finally a performance by his own Branford Marsalis Quartet.

FR —› Mozart a composé sa trentequatrième symphonie à l’âge de 24 ans à Salzbourg. C’est la dernière symphonie qu’il écrira sur ordre des archevêques de Salzbourg. Par la suite, il s’est installé comme artiste indépendant à Vienne. La trentequatrième symphonie, écrite en ré majeur et faisant une large place aux timbales et aux trompettes, ne comporte officiellement que trois mouvements et présente un caractère très festif. Habituellement – et c’est également le cas lors de ce concert – un menuet est ajouté à cette symphonie (l’œuvre écrite plus tard K. 409) de sorte qu’elle se compose finalement de quatre mouvements.

Friedrich Rückert était un génie de la langue allemande. Il pouvait s’exprimer couramment dans plus de 40 langues différentes et était également le poète le plus lu de son époque (la première moitié du 19e siècle). Aujourd’hui, il est surtout connu comme l’auteur des Kindertotenlieder, que Gustav Mahler a mis en musique. Outre les Kindertotenlieder, Mahler a également mis en musique cinq autres poèmes de Friedrich Rückert : les Rückert-Lieder.

Ils sont interprétés dans ce concert par la soprano française Véronique Gens.

Italienische Reise de Goethe en main, Mendelssohn commença en 1830 un grand voyage en Italie. Il visita les mêmes villes que Goethe, presque un demi-siècle plus tôt, qui les avait décrites avec brio dans son livre : Venise, Florence, Rome, Naples, Gênes et Milan. Pendant son voyage, Mendelssohn décida de rassembler ses impressions dans une nouvelle symphonie : l’Italienne (qui portera plus tard le numéro quatre). Les premier et dernier mouvements de cette œuvre, au caractère ludique et plein d’esprit, rappellent le sud.

Mais les mouvements centraux sont plus mélancoliques. Mendelssohn composa le deuxième après avoir appris le décès de Goethe et de son professeur Carl Friedrich Zelter. Dans ce mouvement, il leur rend hommage en faisant référence à la mise en musique de Zelter de la ballade de Goethe, Le Roi de Thulé, que l’on retrouve dans Faust, l’œuvre de sa vie.

Met Goethes Italienische Reise in de hand, begon Mendelssohn in 1830 aan een grote Italiëreis. Daarbij bezocht hij dezelfde steden die Goethe bijna een halve eeuw eerder had bezocht en zo briljant in zijn boek heeft beschreven: Venetië, Firenze, Rome, Napels, Genua en Milaan. Tijdens zijn reis besloot Mendelssohn zijn indrukken te bundelen in een nieuwe symfonie: de Italiaanse (later als zijn Vierde symfonie genummerd).

De hoekdelen van dit werk ademen een zuiderse sfeer uit, zijn speels en geestig, maar beide middendelen klinken melancholischer. Mendelssohn componeerde de tweede beweging na het vernemen van de dood van zowel Goethe als zijn leraar Carl Friedrich Zelter. In dit deel brengt hij aan beiden een ode door muzikaal te refereren aan Zelters toonzetting van Goethes ballade Der König in Thule, een fragment van diens levenswerk Faust.

Friedrich Rückert was a German linguistic genius. He could speak more than forty languages fluently and was the most widely-read poet of his era (the first half of the 19th century).

Today, he is best known as the author of the Kindertotenlieder, set to music by Gustav Mahler. However, in addition to the Kindertotenlieder, Mahler also set five other poems

by Friedrich Rückert to music: the Rückert-Lieder. They will be performed in this concert by the French soprano Véronique Gens.

With Goethe’s Italienische Reise in mind, Mendelssohn embarked on a major Italian trip in 1830. He visited the same cities that Goethe had seen almost half a century earlier and described so brilliantly in his book: Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Genoa and Milan. On his travels, Mendelssohn decided to gather his impressions into a new symphony: the Italian (numbered later on as the Fourth Symphony). The outer movements of the work exude a Mediterranean ambiance and are playful and spirited, while the central movements are more melancholy in tone. Mendelssohn composed the second movement when he received the news about the deaths of both Goethe and his teacher, Carl Friedrich Zelter. He pays tribute to them in this movement by making reference to Zelter’s setting of Goethe’s ballad, Der König in Thule, an excerpt from his magnum opus, Faust.

EN —› Mozart composed his Symphony No. 34 at the age of 24 in Salzburg. It would be the last symphony he would compose on commission of the Salzburg archbishops. Afterwards, he established himself as an independent artist in Vienna.

Symphony No. 24, composed in C major with major roles for tympani and trumpets, only has three official movements and is unusually festive.

Usually – and this concert is no different – a minuet is added to this symphony (the later work K. 409), making it four movements in total.

FR —› Le compositeur baroque français François Couperin a laissé derrière lui quatre volumes pour clavecin très suggestifs. En 2006, Thomas Adès, compositeur de notre saison, avait sélectionné quelques pièces de ces volumes pour une nouvelle composition pour orchestre en trois mouvements. Typiquement, Couperin utilise de nombreuses répétitions dans sa musique et les clavecinistes y apportent de la variété à l’aide de techniques d’attaque et de registres. Thomas Adès traduit ces nuances subtiles dans une orchestration riche. « Comme des lames de verre coloré dans un kaléidoscope, ces pièces de musique baroques rivalisent les unes avec les autres », a écrit un critique du Financial Times à propos des Three Studies from Couperin de Thomas Adès.

Après la guerre franco-allemande en 1871, Camille Saint-Saëns débordait de motivation pour concurrencer la musique symphonique allemande, un domaine où la France était (presque) absente depuis Berlioz, trop longtemps concentrée sur l’opéra et le ballet. Le Troisième Concerto pour violon de Saint-Saëns, aujourd’hui l’une de ses œuvres les plus appréciées, remplit ce rôle « con brio ». Des mélodies magnifiques et une orchestration exquise nous font comprendre pourquoi Fauré et Ravel admiraient tant Saint-Saëns. En hommage au violoniste qui en donna la première, Pablo de Sarasate, le mouvement final inclut, en plus de la brillance française, de nombreuses colorations espagnoles.

La Première Symphonie de Haydn dure 12 minutes, compte trois mouvements et est écrite pour cordes, deux hautbois et deux cors. Il composa l’œuvre à l’âge de 27 ans en 1759, lorsqu’il était maître de chapelle dans un village tchèque. La différence entre cette œuvre et la dernière symphonie de Mozart, la Quaranteet-unième, composée en 1788, est immense et traduit les nombreux développements musicaux qui ont eu lieu au cours de la période classique.

Mozart jette cependant un regard en arrière dans sa Symphonie « Jupiter » : le quatrième et dernier mouvement marie magistralement la fugue baroque à cinq voix et le style galant classique. L’une des pages les plus réussies de la littérature orchestrale !

Prachtige melodieën en een exquisiete orkestratie doen begrijpen waarom latere componisten als Fauré en Ravel zo naar Saint-Saëns opkeken. Als eerbetoon aan de violist die de première speelde, Pablo de Sarasate, bevat het slotdeel naast Franse briljantie ook heel wat Spaans coloriet.

Haydns Eerste symfonie duurt 12 minuten, telt drie bewegingen en is geschreven voor strijkers, twee hobo’s en twee hoorns. EN —› The French Baroque composer François Couperin left behind four evocative volumes of harpsichord music. Inspired by this music Thomas

Adès selected in 2006 a number of short pieces and used them as basis for a new three-part orchestral composition. Couperin’s music is characterised by its many repetitions that harpsichordists vary using a range of touches and registers.

Thomas Adès translates these subtle nuances into a sumptuous orchestration. “Like pieces of coloured glass in a kaleidoscope, pieces of Baroque music tumble over each other,” was how a reviewer in the Financial Times once described Thomas Adès’ Three Studies from Couperin.

Following the Franco-Prussian war in 1871, Camille Saint-Saëns was more motivated than ever for French symphonic music, which had barely existed since Berlioz, to rival what was being composed in Germany.

The French had focused for too long on opera and ballet. Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3, now one of his best-loved works, fulfils this aim ‘con brio’. Beautiful melodies and exquisite orchestration show why later composers such as Fauré and Ravel admired Saint-Saëns so much. As a tribute to the violinist who played the premiere, Pablo de Sarasate, the final movement includes a lot of Spanish colour in addition to French brilliance.

Haydn’s First Symphony lasts 12 minutes, has three movements and was written for strings, two oboes and two horns. He composed it at the age of 27 in 1759 as the Kapellmeister in a Czech village. The difference between this piece and Mozart’s final symphony, No. 41, composed in 1788, is immense and spans the musical developments that unfolded during the Classical period. However, Mozart also looks back in his Jupiter Symphony: the fourth and final movement is a majestic marriage of a Baroque five-voiced fugue and the gallant Classical style. One of the most successful pages in orchestral literature!

FR —› Jonathan Fournel a été la révélation du Concours Reine Elisabeth pour piano 2021 : avec une interprétation sublime du Deuxième Concerto pour piano de Brahms, ce pianiste français a remporté non seulement le Premier Prix, mais aussi les deux Prix du public (le Prix Canvas-Klara et le Prix Musiq3). La finale ayant eu lieu sans public en raison de la crise sanitaire, Jonathan Fournel propose à nouveau ce deuxième concerto, sous la direction du jeune chef belge Karel Deseure.

de quatre mouvements, Beethoven se fraye un chemin de l’obscurité (premier mouvement en do mineur) à la lumière (mouvement final en do majeur). « Les lumières sont ce qui fait sortir l’homme de la minorité qu’il doit s’imputer à lui-même », affirmait le philosophe allemand Emmanuel Kant. Les aléas sinistres du destin du premier mouvement sont soumis à différentes métamorphoses pour finalement prendre la forme d’une marche lumineuse et triomphale dans le quatrième mouvement.

Ce que Johannes Brahms décrivit ironiquement comme un « tout petit concerto pour piano avec un agréable, minuscule scherzo » dans une lettre à Clara Schumann, est en fait une œuvre monumentale de 50 minutes que l’on peut décrire avec le plus d’exactitude comme une symphonie avec piano ajouté. Le Deuxième Concerto pour piano de Brahms ne compte pas trois, mais quatre parties : entre le mouvement d’ouverture et le rondo-finale, il place un scherzo tumultueux, puis encore un adagio.

Dans ce troisième mouvement, le thème est présenté par le premier violoncelle.

Beethovens Vijfde symfonie is misschien wel het beroemdste werk uit de geschiedenis van de klassieke muziek. Het sterk ritmische openingsmotief – drie korte slagen en één lange slag – zou Beethoven ooit omschreven hebben met de woorden “zo klopt het noodlot aan de deur”. Anders dan bij de Grieken was het noodlot in het tijdperk van de verlichting echter geen kracht meer aan dewelke men zich blind onderwierp. In vier bewegingen baant Beethoven zich in zijn Vijfde symfonie dan ook een weg van de duisternis (het openingsdeel in c klein) naar het licht (het slotdeel in C groot).

“Verlichting is de bevrijding van de mens uit de onmondigheid die hij aan zichzelf te danken heeft,” zo beweerde de Duitse filosoof Immanuel Kant ooit.

De onheilspellende noodlotslagen uit de eerste beweging ondergaan verschillende metamorfoses en keren in de vierde beweging uiteindelijk terug in een heldere, triomferende mars.

EN —› Jonathan Fournel was the revelation of 2021’s Queen Elisabeth piano competition: with a sublime interpretation of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 the French pianist won the first prize and both audience prizes (the Canvas-Klara prize and the Prix Musiq3). However, due to the health crisis, only the jury members were able to attend the finale in person. For this reason, Jonathan Fournel now repeats his performance under the young Belgian conductor, Karel Deseure.

What Johannes Brahms ironically described in a letter to Clara Schumann as “a very small piano concerto with a tiny, fun scherzo” is actually a 50-minute-long mammoth work that can best be described as a symphony with an extra piano part.

Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 has not three but four movements: between the opening movement and the rondo finale he placed first a tumultuous scherzo then another adagio. In this

third movement, the theme is carried by a solo cello.

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is perhaps the most famous work in the history of Classical music.

He described the highly rhythmic opening motif - three short notes and a longer one - with the words “thus fate knocks at the door!” However, in contrast to the Greeks, people of the Enlightenment era did not see fate as a force to which they blindly submitted. In four movements, Beethoven forges a path from darkness (the opening movement in C minor) to the light (the final movement in C major). “Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed nonage,” the German philosopher Immanuel Kant once said. The sinister notes of destiny in the first movement undergo various metamorphoses and ultimately return in the fourth movement in a bright, triumphant march.

FR —› Dans son œuvre Laterna Magica, la célèbre compositrice finlandaise Kaija Saariaho joue avec différents tempos qui mettent chaque fois en lumière différents paramètres. Les tempos rapides accentuent la continuité rythmique, tandis que les tempos lents attirent l’attention sur des colorations spécifiques. La lanterne magique, appareil capable de projeter des images en mouvement, symbolise ce processus. En tournant plus vite la manivelle, les images individuelles donnent vie à un mouvement continu.

Kaija Saariaho a composé Laterna Magica en lisant l’autobiographie éponyme du réalisateur suédois Ingmar Bergman. Les mots que murmurent les membres de l’orchestre sont les termes utilisés par Bergman pour décrire la lumière dans ses films.

En 2019, la jeune star canadienne du violon Timothy Chooi a remporté le deuxième prix du Concours Reine Élisabeth. Il interprète le Première Concerto pour violon de Sergei Prokofiev, composé en 1917, année de la Révolution russe. Prokofiev ayant émigré aux États-Unis puis en Europe de l’Est juste après avoir finalisé l’œuvre, il fallut attendre 1923 pour que le concerto soit créé à Paris.

L’un des premiers violonistes à l’avoir joué, Joseph Szigeti, le décrit comme « un mélange de naïveté féérique et de sauvagerie téméraire. » Prokofiev renverse la structure traditionnelle du concerto (lent-rapide-lent au lieu de rapide-lent-rapide), exige une grande virtuosité de la part du violoniste et parvient, surtout dans les premier et dernier mouvement, à coucher sur papier des mélodies absolument magnifiques.

“A blend of fairytale naivety and daring ferocity”

Images pour orchestre de Debussy compte trois parties dont la deuxième, intitulée Iberia, est sans aucune doute la plus connue. Saisi par l’enthousiasme après avoir assisté à un combat de taureaux, il y dépeint un tableau musical particulièrement réussi de l’Espagne. « Je ne comprends pas comment ce Français, qui n’a visité l’Espagne qu’une seule fois, est parvenu à exposer le folklore espagnol avec autant de maîtrise », écrivit le compositeur espagnol Manuel de Falla à propos de Debussy.

Naarmate je sneller aan de hendel draait, maken individuele beelden plaats voor een continue beweging. Kaija Saariaho componeerde Laterna Magica tijdens het lezen van de gelijknamige autobiografie van de Zweedse filmregisseur Ingmar Bergman.

De woorden die de orkestleden fluisteren, zijn de termen waarmee Ingmar Bergman het licht in zijn films beschrijft.

Debussy’s Images pour orchestre telt drie delen, waarvan het tweede, getiteld Iberia, zonder twijfel het beroemdste is. Hierin schildert hij, begeesterd door het bijwonen van een stierengevecht, een uiterst treffend muzikaal beeld van Spanje.

“Onbegrijpelijk dat deze Fransman, die Spanje slechts eenmaal bezocht, op zo’n meesterlijke wijze de Spaanse folklore heeft weten te etaleren,” schreef de Spaanse componist Manuel de Falla over Debussy.

Prokofiev inverted the traditional concerto structure (slow-fast-slow instead of fast-slow-fast), demanding a high level of virtuosity from the violinist, and comes up with some stunning melodies, especially in the first and last movements in particular.

Debussy’s Images pour orchestre is in three movements, the second of which, entitled Iberia, is undoubtedly the best known. Inspired by a visit to a bullfight, he paints an extremely accurate musical picture of Spain.

“It’s incredible that this Frenchman, who only visited Spain once, has been able to showcase Spanish folklore in such masterful fashion,” wrote the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla about Debussy.

Frozen in Time est un concerto pour percussion et orchestre conçu spécialement pour Martin Grubinger par le compositeur israélo-américain Avner Dorman en 2007. Depuis, cette œuvre est devenue une pièce standard du répertoire. Les titres des trois

mouvements – Indoafrica, Eurasia et The Americas – font référence aux trois grands blocs continentaux de notre planète qui formaient autrefois le supercontinent de la Pangée.

Le Belgian National Orchestra clôture la soirée avec les Danses symphoniques de Sergei Rachmaninoff. Il composa l’œuvre en 1940 à Long Island (New York) et jetait ainsi un regard en arrière sur sa vie bien remplie. À l’instar de l’étoile polaire, autour de laquelle toutes les autres étoiles semblent tourner lorsqu’on se trouve sur Terre, Thomas Adès fait tourner tous les instruments autour de la même mélodie, l’un après l’autre, du plus aigu au plus grave. Après quelques minutes, les pôles s’inversent. La fin de la composition accueille un troisième pôle rétablissant l’équilibre.

À la fin de sa vie, lorsque Béla Bartók arriva en Amérique après avoir fui la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, la maladie et le manque d’argent lui jouèrent des tours pendant quelques temps.

En 1943, sa situation s’améliora lorsqu’il reçut une commande pour une œuvre orchestrale. Le Concerto pour orchestre qui en découla est peut-être bien sa composition la

plus connue et la plus accessible. Le titre paradoxal de cette composition en cinq mouvements s’explique par l’approche soliste et virtuose avec laquelle Bartók aborde les différentes sections instrumentales.

Un rôle majeur y est d’ailleurs confié aux percussions. Dans ce Concerto pour orchestre, la musique classique d’Europe de l’Ouest et la musique populaire d’Europe de l’Est fusionnent pour former une composition globale qui finit par déborder de joie de vivre retrouvée.

Daarnaast is Víkingur Ólafsson echter ook een excellent vertolker van ouder repertoire. Zijn laatste cd, die in september 2021 bij Deutsche Grammophon uitkwam, focust op Mozart en zijn tijdgenoten. Tijdens dit concert speelt hij Mozarts Eenentwintigste pianoconcerto.

Toen Béla Bartók aan het einde van zijn leven op de vlucht voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Amerika terechtkwam, speelden ziekte en geldgebrek hem een tijdlang parten.

In 1943 verbeterde zijn situatie toen hij een opdracht kreeg voor een orkestcompositie. Het daaruit resulterende Concerto voor orkest is misschien wel zijn bekendste en meest toegankelijke werk. De paradoxale titel van deze vijfdelige compositie laat zich verklaren door de solistische en virtuoze wijze waarop Bartók de verschillende instrumentsecties behandelt.

Een bijzonder grote rol is daarbij weggelegd voor het slagwerk.

FR ⟶ Le Belgian National Orchestra, BOZAR et la Monnaie/de Munt accueillent le pianiste, chef d’orchestre et compositeur britannique Thomas Adès en qualité de compositeur en résidence durant la saison 2021-22. Son premier opéra, Powder Her Face, créé en 1995, l’a fait connaître dans le monde entier. Depuis lors, les orchestres les plus célèbres lui ont commandé des œuvres. Le Belgian National Orchestra présentera quant à lui son récent concerto pour piano, pour la première fois en Belgique. Il est temps de nous entretenir avec Thomas Adès.

Comment décririez-vous votre style musical ?

Je le qualifierais de mélodique, harmonieux et rythmique. Novateur également, du moins je l’espère. Et surtout varié – c’est sans doute sa principale caractéristique. Musicien moi-même – je joue et dirige des œuvres allant de Beethoven au répertoire du 21e siècle – je dirais que je suis issu de la tradition classique. Ce qui m’intéresse ici surtout, c’est que l’histoire n’est jamais linéaire, elle se décline plutôt sous la forme d’une spirale ou d’un cercle. Le passé refait toujours surface, à chaque fois sous d’autres formes. Ma musique raconte ainsi toujours des histoires. Cela ne vaut pas uniquement pour mes opéras, mais aussi pour mes pièces pour orchestre.

Fin janvier, vous allez diriger, outre votre propre création, The Planets de Gustav Holst. Qu’est-ce que cela change pour un chef d’orchestre de diriger la partition d’un autre compositeur ?

Diriger une composition personnelle se fait de manière très naturelle, on sent les choses, car on connaît la musique sur le bout des doigts. Cela vient du plus profond de nous. Lorsque j’ai devant moi la partition d’un autre compositeur, 50

j’essaie de m’approprier cette musique comme si je l’avais écrite moi-même.

Aussi, pour donner alors le meilleur de moi-même, je dois vraiment me mettre dans les tripes de ce compositeur.

Fin janvier, vous allez diriger votre nouveau concerto pour piano. Ce n’est pas votre première pièce pour piano et orchestre…

Exact, In Seven Days, une pièce que j’ai créée en 2008, s’apparente aussi à un concerto pour piano, sauf qu’elle est accompagnée d’images vidéo et qu’elle m’a été inspirée par le récit de la création. Le Concerto Conciso, une composition pour piano et ensemble que j’ai écrite en 1997 est aussi à mes yeux un petit concerto pour piano.

Le pianiste Kirill Gerstein, qu’on retrouvera aussi avec vous en Belgique pour la partie soliste, a-t-il influencé votre processus créatif ?

Quand j’ai appris qu’il jouerait le concerto pour piano, je me suis vraiment senti tout à fait libre de composer ce que je voulais vraiment. Je n’ai pas d’inquiétude quant à ce qu’il peut faire : il sait tout faire. Kirill Gerstein est un musicien brillant. Il n’est pas seulement incroyablement talentueux, il comprend parfaitement la musique qu’il interprète.

Il ne m’a pas déçu !

Vous allez également diriger une Inferno-suite. Quelle est l’origine de cette suite ?

J’ai composé pour le compte du Los Angeles Philharmonic et du Royal Opera House un Dante-ballet en trois volets, inspiré de La divina commedia. La première partie, Inferno, a été créée en 2019. Vu la prolongation de la crise sanitaire, Purgatorio et Paradiso ne seront joués qu’au cours de la prochaine

saison. La musique de ce ballet est une ode à Franz Liszt. Le Dante-ballet s’apparente aux pièces de Liszt de la même façon que la Pulcinella de Stravinsky fait songer à la musique de Pergolesi. J’ai déjà présenté une Infernosuite à Rome – une pièce orchestrale reprenant quelques passages clés du ballet. Vous pourrez aussi la découvrir à Bruxelles. Avec bien sûr aussi une des dernières parties, The Thieves, particulièrement fougueuse et inspirée par la virtuosité démoniaque de Liszt !

La musique de ballet suit-elle d’autres règles que la musique concertante ?

Les danseurs doivent bouger sur votre musique et cela change bien évidemment la donne. La répétition devient une des clés de la partition, ce qui ouvre d’énormes possibilités. La musique de ballet doit aussi toujours créer la bonne atmosphère, elle doit pouvoir vous transporter ailleurs… Elle est plus scénique, plus narrative, parle davantage à l’imagination.

Votre concerto pour piano a déjà été joué un peu partout dans le monde.

Que pensez-vous de ces différentes interprétations ? Faut-il en retenir une en particulier ?

Il est clair qu’un orchestre n’est pas l’autre : la façon dont les instruments à vent donnent la réplique aux cordes, la nature précise du dialogue avec les percussions… Ces nuances sont bien trop riches pour qu’on puisse les traduire avec des mots. Les orchestres américains sont incroyablement brillants, d’autres misent sur l’expressivité. J’ai bien sûr mes préférences, mais pour le reste, je suis vraiment capable d’apprécier les différentes façons dont mes compositions sont interprétées.

Nous vivons des temps de grande incertitude. La crise sanitaire, la crise climatique, la succession de crises politiques… Êtes-vous de ceux qui mettent la musique au service de leur engagement social ?

Les thèmes sociaux m’interpellent naturellement. Mais si je devais décider un jour de vraiment me battre pour quelque chose, je ne pense pas que je choisirais un concerto pour piano. Ce n’est pas l’outil approprié selon moi.

Beethoven était un homme très engagé.

Pourtant, il est extrêmement difficile de faire le lien entre sa musique et ses convictions politiques. Si Beethoven avait concrètement fait référence à la politique du début du 18e siècle dans son œuvre, il présenterait beaucoup moins d’intérêt pour nous. Prenons l’exemple de sa Neuvième : cette symphonie véhicule un idéal d’humanité totalement unie, de fraternité universelle. La force de ce symbole, c’est que tout reste ici abstrait.

Les passions du quotidien imprègnent bien sûr les œuvres que l’on compose, mais jamais de manière aussi concrète.

Hoe zou u uw muzikale stijl omschrijven?

Melodisch, harmonisch ritmisch.

Nieuw ook, hoop ik. En divers, dat is misschien wel het belangrijkste. Zelf ook uitvoerder zijnde – ik speel en dirigeer werk van Beethoven tot 21steeeuwse repertoire – ben ik natuurlijk een kind van de klassieke traditie. Wat mij daarbij bijzonder interesseert, is dat de geschiedenis geen rechte lijn vormt, maar eerder een spiraal of een cirkel.

Het verleden keert terug in telkens andere vormen. Mijn muziek vertelt ook altijd verhalen, niet alleen de opera’s, maar ook de orkestwerken.

Eind januari dirigeert u zowel eigen werk als The Planets van Gustav Holst. Hoe verschillend is het om een partituur van iemand anders te dirigeren?

Eigen werk dirigeren voelt heel natuurlijk aan omdat je de muziek door en door kent. Op een bepaalde manier zit dat in je systeem. Wanneer ik partituren dirigeer van andere componisten, maak ik me die muziek even ‘eigen’ als de muziek die ikzelf heb geschreven. Om een zo goed mogelijke uitvoering af te leveren, moet ik het zenuwcentrum van de componist in kwestie bewonen.

Klopt, In Seven Days, in 2008 in première gegaan, is ook een soort pianoconcerto, maar dan met bijhorende videobeelden en geïnspireerd op het scheppingsverhaal. Daarnaast beschouw ik ook het Concerto Conciso, geschreven in 1997 voor piano en ensemble, als een klein pianoconcerto.

Heeft de pianist Kirill Gerstein, die ook in België de solopartij zal spelen, invloed gehad op het compositieproces?

Toen ik hoorde dat hij het pianoconcerto zou spelen, voelde ik me volledig vrij om datgene te schrijven wat ik echt wou. Ik heb me geen zorgen moeten maken over iets wat hij niet zou kunnen.

Kirill Gerstein is een briljante man die niet alleen ongelofelijk vaardig is, maar daarnaast de muziek die hij uitvoert ook echt begrijpt. En hij heeft me niet teleurgesteld!

U voert ook een Inferno-suite uit.

Vanwaar komt dit werk precies?

In opdracht van het Los Angeles Philharmonic en het Royal Opera House schrijf ik een driedelig Dante-ballet, gebaseerd op La divina commedia.

Het eerste deel, Inferno, ging in 2019 in première. Purgatorio en Paradiso werden door de aanhoudende gezondheidscrisis uitgesteld naar volgend seizoen. De muziek van dit ballet is een ode aan Franz Liszt.

Het Dante-ballet verhoudt zich tot de werken van Liszt als Stravinsky’s Pulcinella zich verhoudt tot de werken van Pergolesi. In Rome voerde ik reeds een Inferno-suite op: enkele highlights uit het ballet tot orkestwerk gebundeld.

Dat zullen we ook in Brussel doen.

bijzonder pittig en geïnspireerd door Liszt demonische virtuositeit, is zeker van de partij!

Kent balletmuziek andere regels dan concertmuziek?

Dat er dansers op je muziek moeten bewegen, maakt inderdaad een groot verschil. Herhaling speelt in de partituur een belangrijke rol – en kan je met andere woorden veel interessanter inzetten. Balletmuziek moet ook steeds de juiste atmosfeer oproepen, moet je ergens heen kunnen transporteren …

Ze is scenischer, narratiever, verbeeldingsrijker.

Uw pianoconcerto werd reeds wereldwijd uitgevoerd. Hoe gaat u om met al deze verschillende interpretaties? Is er een definitieve uitvoering of niet?

Orkesten verschillen enorm van elkaar: de manier waarop de blazers zich tot de strijkers verhouden, of hoe er precies met de percussie wordt gedialogeerd …

Die nuances zijn te rijk om ze in woorden te kunnen vatten. Amerikaanse orkesten zijn ongelofelijk briljant, anderen dan weer zeer expressief … Ik heb natuurlijk mijn voorkeuren, maar voor de rest kan ik heel erg genieten van de diverse wijzen waarop mijn werk wordt uitgevoerd.

We leven in turbulente tijden. De gezondheidscrisis, de klimaatcrisis, politieke crisissen … Bent u iemand die zich met zijn muziek maatschappelijk gaat engageren?

Maatschappelijke thema’s beroeren me natuurlijk. Maar als ik op een dag zou besluiten om ergens echt voor te gaan vechten, dan lijkt me het schrijven van een pianoconcerto niet de juiste ‘tool’. Beethoven was iemand met sterke politieke ideeën. Toch blijft het in verbinding brengen van zijn

muziek met zijn overtuigingen altijd wat nattevingerwerk. Had Beethoven concrete referenties gemaakt naar de vroeg-18de-eeuwse politiek, dan was hij voor ons veel minder interessant geweest.

De Negende kan als voorbeeld gelden: die symfonie communiceert een ideaal van een mensheid die één wordt, van algemene broederlijkheid. Dat alles daarbij abstract blijft, is een ongelofelijke sterkte. Natuurlijk is het wel zo dat de passies die je voelt in het alledaagse leven op niet concrete wijze doorstromen in de composities die je schrijft.

EN ⟶ The Belgian National Orchestra, BOZAR and de Munt/la Monnaie have appointed the British pianist, conductor and composer Thomas Adès to be composer in residence for the 2021-22 season. His first opera, Powder Her Face, premiered in 1995 and brought him international renown.

Since then he has been commissioned to compose works by some of the world’s greatest orchestras. The Belgian National Orchestra will be performing the Belgian premier of his recently composed and extremely successful piano concerto. Time for a talk with Thomas Adès.

How would you describe your musical style?

Melodic, harmonious and rhythmic. New too, I hope. And varied, which is perhaps most telling of all. Also being a performer myself – I play and conduct work ranging from Beethoven to the 21st century repertoire – so I am rather a child of the classical tradition. What interests me particularly in this is the way history does not follow a straight line but is more of a spiral or a circle. The past returns every time in a different form. My music also always tells a story, and not only the operas but also the works for orchestra.

At the end of January you are conducting both your own work and Gustav Holst’s The Planets. How different is it to conduct a score written by somebody else?

Conducting your own work feels very natural as you know the music through and through. It is in your system. When I conduct scores by other composers I make this music as much my “own”, as if I had written it myself. To provide the best possible performance I have to imagine inhabiting the composer’s own nervous system.

The piano concerto you are conducting at the end of January is not your first work for piano and orchestra…

Correct. In Seven Days, which premiered in 2008, is also a kind of piano concerto, but with accompanying video images and inspired by a story of Creation. I also consider Concerto Conciso, written in 1997 for piano and ensemble, to be a small piano concerto.

Did the pianist Kirill Gerstein, who will also be playing the solo parts in Belgium, have any influence on the composition process?

When I heard that he would be playing the piano concerto I felt totally free to write exactly what I wanted. I don’t need to worry about anything that he might not be able to do. Kirill Gerstein is a brilliant man who is not only incredibly skilled but also someone who really understands the music he performs. And he did not disappoint me!

You will also be performing an Inferno suite. What exactly is the origin of this work?

I was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Royal Opera House to write a three-part Dante-ballet, based on La divina commedia. The first part, Inferno, premiered in 2019. Purgatorio and Paradiso were postponed until the next season due to the continuing health crisis. The music from this ballet is an ode to Franz Liszt. The Dante ballet stands in relation to the works of Liszt much as Stravinsky’s Pulcinella stands in relation to the works of Pergolesi. In Rome I already presented an Inferno suite: a few highlights from the ballet brought together as a work for orchestra. We will be doing the same in Brussels. One of the last sections, The Thieves, exceptionally fiery and inspired by Liszt’s demonic virtuosity, will certainly be included!

Do the rules of ballet music differ from those of concert music?

The fact that dancers have to move to your music does indeed make a big difference. Repetition plays a major role in the score – and that opens up a lot of interesting possibilities. Ballet music also has to create the right atmosphere, it must be able to transport you... It is more scenic, more narrative, more imaginative.

Your piano concerto has already been performed worldwide. How do you view all these different interpretations? Is there a definitive performance or not? Orchestras vary a great deal: the way in which the wind instruments relate to the strings, or the precise nature of the dialogue with the percussion... These nuances are too rich to be expressed in words. American orchestras are incredibly skilled while others are very expressive… Of course I have my preferences, but for the rest I get great pleasure from the various ways in which my work is performed.

We live in turbulent times. The health crisis, the climate crisis, political crises…

Are you somebody who engages with society through the music?

Of course I am sensitive to what is going on in society. But if one day I decided to really fight for a cause, then I don’t think writing a piano concerto would be the right ‘tool’. Beethoven was a man with strong political opinions. But relating his music to his convictions is always going to be guesswork. If Beethoven had made specific references to the politics of the early 18th century then he would have been much less interesting for us.

Beethoven’s Ninth is an example: This symphony communicates an ideal of a humanity that becomes one, of a general fraternity. The fact that all of this remains abstract is an unbelievable strength.

Of course the passions you feel in everyday life are reflected in the works you compose but not in a specific, literal sense.

FR ⟶ Leo Wouters (trompettiste) et Nico Schoeters (percussionniste) sont deux de nos musiciens que nous pourrons voir chacun à l’œuvre dans une partie soliste pendant la deuxième moitié de cette saison. Nico Schoeters sera au vibraphone avec Branford Marsalis dans les Escapades de John Williams. Leo Wouters assurera la partie trompette du Concerto pour piano n°1 de Shostakovich, pendant le festival qui lui est consacré. Ce concerto est en fait un concerto double pour trompette et piano, bien que son nom ne le dise pas.

Qu’avez-vous ressenti lors du lancement de la saison en septembre, après cette longue période d’arrêt forcé ?

Nico Schoeters Après tous ces concerts radiodiffusés et en streaming, j’ai vécu comme un réel soulagement de pouvoir rejouer un « vrai » concert – devant un public restreint il est vrai. Les choses vont progressivement dans la bonne direction. Nous espérons bien sûr que toutes les mesures encore en vigueur seront rapidement levées, mais je suis heureux que nous puissions à nouveau exercer notre métier dans des conditions pratiquement normales.

Leo Wouters Même chose pour moi, car ces concerts radiodiffusés ont été une expérience étrange. Sur scène, nous portons nos vêtements de tous les jours et à la fin de l’enregistrement, nous sommes privés d’applaudissements.

Sitôt le concert terminé, nous plions vite bagages. L’atmosphère est radicalement différente lorsque nous jouons devant un public – plus encore si les spectateurs sont nombreux. Nous sommes tous sur des charbons ardents et c’est précisément cela qui donne ce petit quelque chose en plus.

Cet été, nous avons appris qu’Antony Hermus sera le nouveau chef principal du Belgian National Orchestra. Une bonne décision selon vous ?

NS Absolument ! Nous avons déjà joué quelques fois avec lui et ça a accroché d’emblée avec les musiciens. Antony Hermus est quelqu’un de très chaleureux et de très ouvert. Il a une façon tout à fait désarmante de dire ce qui doit être amélioré, en abordant les choses presque de manière individuelle. C’est une qualité incroyable pour un chef d’orchestre.

LW C’est aussi quelqu’un qui se donne à fond dès la première répétition.

Contrairement à de nombreux chefs, il n’est pas du genre à attendre le concert pour s’ouvrir vraiment. Il insuffle ainsi une formidable énergie à l’orchestre. Et sans doute parce qu’il est Néerlandais, Antony Hermus est direct et carré, mais reste toujours bienveillant et respectueux. Une façon d’être et de faire qui fonctionne avec notre orchestre !

En tant que trompettiste et percussionniste – et je ne tiens pas compte de la partie soliste que jouera Leo – vous serez clairement mis à contribution pendant le festival Shostakovich. Que pensez-vous de ce compositeur ?

LW J’imagine que la musique de Shostakovich casse un peu l’enthousiasme des instrumentistes à cordes – avec toute cette violence fortissimo – mais pour les cuivres, jouer ses symphonies est vraiment une expérience incroyable. Des passages extrêmement calmes côtoient des déchaînements de violence rares… C’est aussi violent que fantastique !

NS C’est vrai aussi pour les percussions.

Attention, ne vous y méprenez pas : j’adore aussi jouer de la musique plus ancienne. Mais pour un percussionniste, ce que je suis, quel bonheur de participer

plus activement à la musique. Il faut habituellement attendre 500 mesures pour donner enfin un coup de triangle.

Toutefois, je suis depuis peu timbalier et dans cette fonction, je suis pratiquement toujours beaucoup sollicité.

Le Concerto pour piano n°1 de Shostakovich est en fait un double concerto pour piano, trompette et orchestre à cordes. Leo, quel est ici exactement le rôle de la trompette ?

LW Shostakovich s’est d’abord lancé dans l’écriture d’un concerto pour trompette.

Il a ajouté plus tard la partie piano, et il s’agit donc de son Premier Concerto pour piano. Dans ce double concerto, le piano et la trompette font cependant jeu égal.

Sur le plan de la composition, il s’agit d’une œuvre assez atypique du Russe : elle est très différente des symphonies qu’on pourra entendre pendant le festival qui lui est consacré. Les thèmes que je joue à la trompette sont légers, particulièrement joyeux et remplis d’humour. De joyeuses sonneries ! Jouer face au piano est en revanche un défi. Le dialogue entre les deux instruments, la ligne du piano et celle de la trompette, est des plus subtils.

Nico, vous allez donc enfin monter sur scène avec le saxophoniste de légende Brandford Marsalis pour interpréter la partie vibraphone seul des Escapades de John Williams (du film Catch Me If You Can). Impatient ?

NS Et comment ! Tout comme de très nombreux percussionnistes et joueurs de cuivre, j’apprécie énormément la musique de John Williams. La jouer avec Branford Marsalis, une star mondiale phénoménale, est pour moi la cerise sur le gâteau ! Beaucoup de spectateurs reconnaîtront le morceau Another Day. C’est une chanson de Buckshot LeFonque, le groupe de Branford Marsalis.

Un solo avec orchestre, une œuvre de

John Williams et Branford Marsalis à mes côtés… Que rêver de mieux ?

Leo jouera avec le pianiste Lucas Debargue ; Nico avec Branford Marsalis.

Avez-vous l’occasion de répéter beaucoup ensemble avant de tels concerts ?

LW Pour de tels concerts, une rencontre est souvent organisée entre les solistes et le chef d’orchestre, et ce avant même le début des répétitions. Disons qu’il s’agit d’une petite discussion pour bien s’aligner question tempo. Rien ne vous empêche bien sûr d’aller voir avant si vous ne pouvez pas trouver un enregistrement, ou même une vidéo sur YouTube, du soliste avec qui vous allez jouer. Cela permet de déjà de se faire une assez bonne idée.

NS Pour moi, cette collaboration sur scène sera une vraie découverte. Le saxophone et le vibraphone jouent de très nombreux passages rapides unisono dans les Escapades de John Williams.

Je ne sais pas très bien comment vont se dérouler les journées juste avant le concert, mais j’espère que Branford Marsalis pourra se libérer un peu pour qu’on puisse bien être sur la même longueur d’onde. En tout cas, je suis vraiment impatient de jouer avec lui !

Y a-t-il une grande différence, au niveau du jeu, entre un soliste et un musicien d’orchestre ?

LW Évidemment, cela n’a absolument rien à voir ! Le soliste a tous les regards braqués sur lui et qui plus est, il joue devant ses propres collègues. Et ici, il ne s’agit pas d’une invitation à se produire ailleurs comme soliste, c’est un concert, une prestation dont votre entourage se souviendra encore pendant de nombreuses années. Le stress auquel on est alors confronté est particulièrement élevé.

NS Ce qui est primordial à mes yeux, c’est la préparation ; ça aide énormément. Plusieurs mois de préparation sont nécessaires. Quand on a la chance de se voir confier une partie solo, on la saisit pleinement. Une erreur n’est tout simplement pas une option.

Le concert avec Branford Marsalis a été l’un des premiers concerts annulés en raison de la crise sanitaire. Quel impact cela a-t-il eu sur votre processus de préparation ?

NS Il y a eu pendant cette période de nombreuses choses bien plus graves mais croyez-moi, apprendre qu’un concert qu’on prépare depuis quatre mois va être annulé, c’est très pénible.

Sur le plan mental, j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à garder cette tension et ce niveau d’énergie et à continuer à me préparer consciencieusement. On pouvait en effet annoncer que le concert pourrait quand même avoir lieu. En pareil moment, il est fondamental de ne pas perdre de vue l’objectif et de tenir bon.

Vous attendez sûrement avec beaucoup d’impatience d’autres concerts. Lesquels ?

LW Le festival Shostakovich est vraiment un événement unique. En tant que musicien d’orchestre, vous jouez chaque année du Beethoven, peutêtre aussi du Mahler. Les symphonies tardives de Shostakovich sont rarement au programme. En ce qui concerne la première moitié de la saison, je me réjouis déjà des concerts de Brahms et de Bruckner dirigés par Hartmut Haenchen. C’est toujours une formidable expérience de jouer avec ce chef.

NS J’attends avec la plus grande impatience The Planets de Holst, une œuvre rarement jouée par un orchestre.

La partie Mars surtout est un régal pour les percussions. Et il y a évidemment 60

aussi le concert aux côtés de Martin Grubinger, un percussionniste soliste d’envergure internationale. Ce ne sont là que quelques exemples !

Hoe hebben jullie na een lange periode van gedwongen stilstand de seizoensopstart in september beleefd?

Nico Schoeters Na al die streaming- en radioconcerten was het eerste liveoptreden, alhoewel dat nog steeds met een gereduceerde zaalbezetting plaatsvond, één grote verademing.

Langzamerhand gaat het de goede richting uit. Natuurlijk hopen we dat alle maatregelen die nu nog gelden snel worden opgeheven, maar ik ben blij dat we onze job intussen terug kunnen uitvoeren op een quasi-normale manier.

Leo Wouters Inderdaad, want die radioconcerten waren een vreemde ervaring. Iedereen zit in normale kledij op het podium en na afloop van de opname weerklinkt geen applaus. Dan is het gewoon inpakken en wegwezen.

Van zodra er publiek in de zaal zit – hoe meer hoe beter natuurlijk – verandert de atmosfeer volledig. Je zit op het puntje van je stoel en geeft net dat tikkeltje meer.

In de zomer werd aangekondigd dat Antony Hermus de nieuwe chefdirigent wordt van het Belgian National Orchestra. Een goede beslissing?

NS Absoluut! We hebben al een paar keer met hem samengespeeld en het klikte van meet af aan. Antony Hermus is een heel warm en open iemand. Op een erg ontwapenende manier kan hij de dingen benoemen die beter moeten en werkt daar dan bijna individueel aan.

Dat is voor een dirigent een ongelofelijke kwaliteit.

LW Het is ook iemand die zich vanaf de eerste repetitie volledig geeft, geen dirigent die pas op het concert zelf open bloeit – zo zijn er veel. Dat helpt om de energie van het orkest omhoog te krikken. Als Nederlander is hij ook zeer duidelijk en recht voor de raap, op een goede en respectvolle wijze. Dat werkt bij ons orkest!

Als trompettist en slagwerker – nog los van de solopartij die Leo speelt – hebben jullie tijdens het Shostakovichfestival heel veel te doen.

Hoe kijken jullie naar deze componist?

LW Ik kan me voorstellen dat strijkers wat minder enthousiast zijn over de muziek van Shostakovich – al dat fortissimogeweld – maar voor koperblazers vormen zijn symfonieën een ware belevenis. Enorm stille passages staan naast wilde uitspattingen … heftig en fantastisch tegelijkertijd!

NS Dat geldt ook voor het slagwerk. Pas op, begrijp me niet verkeerd: oudere muziek spelen doe ik ook ontzettend graag. Maar het is echt leuk om als slagwerker eens een groot aandeel in de muziek te hebben – en eens niet 500 maten te moeten wachten vooraleer je een triangelslag mag spelen. Recent ben ik echter paukenist geworden en in die hoedanigheid heb je nagenoeg altijd veel te doen.

Shostakovich’ Eerste pianoconcerto is eigenlijk een dubbelconcerto voor piano, trompet en strijkers. Welke rol speelt de trompet precies, Leo? LW Toen Shostakovich aan dit werk begon te componeren, plande hij eerst een concerto voor trompet te schrijven.

Later voegde hij een piano toe en werd het inderdaad zijn Eerste pianoconcerto.

Piano en trompet zijn in dit dubbelconcerto echter evenwaardige partners. Wat de compositie betreft, is dit een vrij atypisch werk voor Shostakovich: heel erg verschillend van de symfonieën die we tijdens het aan hem gewijde festival opvoeren. De thema’s die ik als trompettist speel, zijn onbezorgd, bijzonder vreugdevol en heel erg humoresk. Happy trompetsignalen!

Het samenspel met de piano vormt wel een echte uitdaging. De wisselwerking tussen beide instrumenten, de pianolijnen de trompetlijn, is zeer subtiel.

Samen met de saxofoonlegende Branford Marsalis speel jij solo vibrafoon in John Williams’ Escapades (uit de film Catch Me If You Can). Iets waar je naar uitkijkt, Nico?

NS Zeker en vast. Net als heel veel slagwerkers en koperblazers ben ik een grote fan van de muziek van John Williams. En dat dan nog eens in combinatie met Branford Marsalis, een absolute wereldster! Vele mensen zal het nummer Another Day bekend in de oren klinken. Dat is een song van Branford Marsalis’ groep Buckshot LeFonque. Soleren voor orkest met muziek van John Williams en samen met Branford Marsalis … Wat kan je nog meer willen?

Kunnen jullie vooraf veel samen repeteren?

LW Bij dergelijke concerten wordt meestal, voorafgaand aan de orkestrepetities, één ontmoeting tussen de solisten en de dirigent gepland. Een kleine bespreking om tempi op elkaar af te stemmen. Al kan je vooraf natuurlijk al eens checken of er van de solist met wie je samenspeelt niet reeds een opname, of eventueel een YouTube-video beschikbaar is. Aan de hand daarvan kan je al veel inschatten.

NS Voor mij gaat dat samenspel een echte ontdekking worden. De saxofoon en de vibrafoon hebben heel wat snelle unisono-passages te spelen in John Williams’ Escapades. Ik weet niet goed hoe de dagen voorafgaand aan het concert zullen verlopen, maar ik hoop dat Branford Marsalis een paar keer beschikbaar is om alles op elkaar af te stellen. In elk geval kijk er erg naar uit om met hem samen te spelen!

Is er een groot verschil tussen spelen als orkestmusicus en spelen als solist?

LW O ja, dat is niet met elkaar te vergelijken! Als solist zijn alle ogen op jou gericht en daarnaast is er nog het feit dat we voor onze eigen collega’s spelen.

Het is niet zomaar een gastconcert ergens, het is iets wat je vertrouwde omgeving zich nog jaren zal herinneren.

De stress waarmee je in die situatie geconfronteerd wordt, is bijzonder hoog.

NS In dat geval helpt enkel een goede voorbereiding. Die neemt meerdere maanden in beslag. Solo spelen is een kans waar we 100% voor gaan, eens we ze krijgen. Een fout maken, kan simpelweg niet.

Het concert met Branford Marsalis was een van de eerste voorstellingen die door de coronacrisis werd afgelast. Wat betekende dat voor jouw voorbereidingsproces?

NS Er zijn in die periode natuurlijk vele erge zaken gebeurd, maar ja, na vier maanden voorbereidingstijd zo’n concert afgelast zien, was niet leuk. Mentaal is het zwaar geweest om die spanning, dat energieniveau, die consciëntieuze voorbereiding op peil te houden voor het geval mocht het concert hernomen worden. Op dat moment is het gewoon keihard je doel voor ogen houden en doorzetten.

Zijn er andere concerten dit seizoen waar jullie in het bijzonder naar uitkijken?

LW Dat hele Shostakovichfestival is toch wel een bijzondere gebeurtenis. Als orkestmusicus speel je elk jaar wel eens Beethoven en misschien ook Mahler, maar Shostakovich’ late symfonieën worden niet vaak opgevoerd. In de eerste helft van het seizoen kijk ik erg uit naar Brahms en Bruckner met Hartmut Haenchen. Die dirigent is altijd weer een echte belevenis.

NS Ik kijk vooral ook uit naar The Planets van Holst, een stuk dat door het orkest nog niet vaak is uitgevoerd. Vooral het deel Mars is een waar festijn voor het slagwerk. Daarnaast is er natuurlijk ook het concert met Martin Grubinger, een slagwerksolist van wereldformaat. Ja, er zijn heel wat concerten om naar uit te kijken!

After this long period of lockdowns, how has the start of the season in September been for you?

Nico Schoeters After all those streaming and radio concerts, the first live performance, even with a reduced audience, was one big relief. Things are moving slowly in the right direction.

Of course, we hope that the remaining measures will soon be lifted, but I’m glad we can now do our jobs again in an almost-normal manner.

Leo Wouters Indeed, those radio concerts were a weird experience.

Everyone on stage in their everyday clothes and no applause at the end of the recording. We just packed up and left. As soon as the audience takes its seats in the venue – the more the better, of course – the atmosphere changes completely. You’re on the edge of your seat, and it gives you that little bit extra.

During the summer, it was announced that Antony Hermus would be the new Principal Conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra. A good choice?

NS Absolutely! We have already played with him a few times and it clicked from the very beginning. Antony Hermus is a very warm and open person. In his very disarming way, he can pick out the things that need to be improved and works on them almost at an individual level. That’s an incredible quality for a conductor.

LW He is also a person who gives his all from the very first rehearsal, not the kind of conductor who only bursts into life during the concert – there are a lot like that. It helps to crank up the orchestra’s energy. As a Dutchman, he’s also very clear and speaks his mind, in a good, respectful way. That works for our orchestra!

As a trumpeter and a percussionist – apart from the solo part that Leo plays – you have a lot to do during the Shostakovich Festival. How do you approach this composer?

LW I can imagine that string players might be less enthusiastic about Shostakovich’s music – all that fortissimo violence – but for brass players his symphonies are quite an experience. Vast silent passages alongside wild outbursts... it’s intense and fantastic at the same time!

NS The same goes for percussion.

Don’t get me wrong: I love to play older music. But it’s really great, as a percussionist, to have a larger share of the music for once – and not having to wait 500 bars before you get to hit a triangle. However, I’ve recently become a timpanist, and in that role you almost always have plenty to do.

Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is actually a double concerto for piano, trumpet and strings. What is the role of the trumpet exactly, Leo? LW When Shostakovich started to compose this work, he initially intended to write a concerto for trumpet. He added a piano later on, and indeed it became his Piano Concerto No. 1.

However, piano and trumpet are equal partners in this double concerto. As far as the composition is concerned, it’s a fairly atypical one for Shostakovich: very, very different from the symphonies we perform during the festival dedicated to him. The themes I play on the trumpet are carefree, extremely joyful and very humorous. Happy trumpet signals! The interplay with the piano is a real challenge, though. The exchange between the two instruments, the piano line and the trumpet line, is very subtle.

Together with the saxophone legend Branford Marsalis, you play solo vibraphone in John Williams’ Escapades (from the film Catch Me If You Can). Are you looking forward to that, Nico?

NS Definitely. Like a lot of percussionists and brass players, I’m a big fan of the music of John Williams. And that in combination with Branford Marsalis, an absolute superstar! A lot of people will be familiar with the number Another Day. It’s a song by Branford Marsalis’ group, Buckshot LeFonque. Playing solo with an orchestra to music by John Williams together with Branford Marsalis… What more could you want?

Leo plays with pianist Lucas Debargue, Nico with Branford Marsalis. Will you be able to rehearse much together in advance?

LW With concerts like this, before the orchestral rehearsals, a meeting is usually scheduled between the soloists and the conductor. A quick conversation to agree the tempos with each other. Of course, you can also check whether there is already a recording of the soloist you are playing with, or maybe a YouTube video. You can learn a lot from that.

NS For me, playing together is going to be quite a discovery. The saxophone and vibraphone have quite a lot of fast unison passages to play in John Williams’ Escapades. I’m not sure what the few days ahead of the concert have in store, but I hope that Branford Marsalis will be available to run through things a few times. In any case, I’m really looking forward to playing with him!

Is there a big difference between playing as a member of the orchestra and playing as a soloist?

LW Oh yes, there’s no comparison! As a soloist, all eyes are on you, and there’s also the fact that we’re playing to our own colleagues. It’s not just a guest concert somewhere; it’s something the familiar people around you will remember for years to come. The stress you have to deal with in this situation is incredibly high.

NS In that case, the only thing that will help is good preparation. That takes months. Playing solo is an opportunity, and we give 100% when we get it.

Making a mistake is simply not an option.

The concert with Branford Marsalis was one of the first performances to be cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

How did that affect your preparation process?

NS Obviously, a lot of terrible things happened in that period, but yes, having a concert like that cancelled after four months of preparation was no fun. It’s tough mentally to maintain that tension, that energy level, that conscientious preparation in case the concert is rescheduled. At that moment, it’s just really hard to stay focused on the goal and keep going.

Are there other concerts this season you are particularly looking forward to?

LW The whole Shostakovich Festival is a special event, isn’t it? As an orchestral musician, you play Beethoven at least once a year, and maybe Mahler too, but Shostakovich’s late symphonies are not often performed. In the first half of the season, I’m really looking forward to Brahms and Bruckner with Hartmut Haenchen. Playing under that conductor is always quite an experience.

NS I’m especially looking forward to Holst’s The Planets, a piece that the orchestra has not played often. In particular, Mars is a real feast for the percussion section. As well as that, there is also, of course, the concert with Martin Grubinger, a genuine world-class percussion soloist. Yes, there are quite a few concerts to look forward to!

FR ⟶ La Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth entamait en juillet 2019 la saison de son 80e anniversaire.

La crise du Covid et les différents confinements ont poussé l’institution à reporter plusieurs des évènements prévus, dont leur concert de Gala.

Celui-ci aura donc lieu le 14 mars 2022.

Bernard de Launoit, CEO, nous délivre quelques mots sur l’histoire et l’avenir de la Chapelle.

Votre institution fêtera donc avec un peu de retard ses 80 ans, avec le Belgian National Orchestra. Quels étaient ses objectifs à sa création ?

Après autant d’années, comment gardet-elle sa vitalité ?

Suite à une réflexion sur la pertinence de notre enseignement, nous avons entamé dès 2004 la mise en œuvre d’un modèle actualisé qui comprend aussi bien un nouveau cursus artistique que des aspects liés à « l’accès à la scène ».

Jusqu’en 2004, les jeunes (pour la plupart belges) arrivaient avec leur professeur en sortant du conservatoire.

Alors qu’aujourd’hui, ils auditionnent pour travailler avec tel ou tel maître. Nous avons augmenté le nombre de sections de 3 en 2004 à 6 en 2014 : violon, alto, violoncelle, piano, musique de chambre et chant.

L’évolution s’est par ailleurs accélérée avec le temps. Car en plus de la restructuration du contenu, nous avons cherché à améliorer la qualité de notre enseignement et à nous internationaliser. À tel point que nous avons cette année 72 jeunes issus de 28 nationalités.

Après tout ce temps, on peut aisément imaginer que des liens forts se sont tissés entre la Chapelle et l’Orchestre, tant sur le plan humain qu’artistique.

Pourriez-vous nous en dire un peu plus ?

Il est important de souligner que les 2 institutions sont nées à la même époque, dans l’entre-deux-guerres. C’était une période où la dynamique culturelle fut importante : création du Palais des Beaux-Arts, de la Maison de la Radio, du Concours Reine Elisabeth, etc. Par son histoire et sa contextualisation, nous sommes très attachés à l’Orchestre. De plus le Belgian National Orchestra, en raison notamment de sa mission, donne énormément de concerts du Nord au Sud du pays. Par cet aspect-là, il est unique. Notre philosophie a été d’établir des partenariats sur la durée.

Comme j’ai pu le mentionner, le renouvellement de notre modèle passe également par une accessibilité à la scène. Élément pour lequel le Belgian National Orchestra a un rôle à jouer. Car, en 20 ans, nous sommes également devenus producteur et partenaire de concerts. Nous proposons dès lors à nos jeunes entre 250 et 350 concerts par an. Nous avons en outre besoin de les faire jouer dans et avec des orchestres symphoniques, afin qu’ils disposent de cette expérience dans leur bagage professionnel.

Tous les 2 ans, le Belgian National Orchestra joue la finale du Concours Reine Elisabeth. Période où nos musiciens ont la chance d’accompagner et de côtoyer des jeunes talents prodigieux. Des talents qui passent par la Chapelle. Ce fut encore le cas avec le lauréat de cette année, Jonathan Fournel. Comment cadre-t-on de tels talents de sorte à ce qu’ils arrivent au niveau qu’on leur connaît en finale ?

Les jeunes qui arrivent chez nous viennent car il y a, je pense, une certaine tradition, notamment inscrite dans le choix des professeurs. Nos maîtres ont une esthétique assez semblable, en plus de leur personnalité individuelle. De plus, nous voyons quels sont les besoins de ces talents pour les faire avancer.

Nous restons d’ailleurs très en phase avec la philosophie inspirée par le créateur de la Chapelle, Eugène Ysaÿe : le compagnonnage et la transmission de l’art musical. Nous gardons l’esprit de ce lieu qui est un endroit de résidence, où les jeunes peuvent venir passer du temps et travailler ensemble, où ils ont encore l’opportunité de venir jouer avec leurs « aînés ».

En fait, nous présentons un outil différent des conservatoires : nous proposons un environnement où ils peuvent répéter et se concentrer au calme, dans leur studio. Et ce dans un cadre entouré par la nature, tout en étant proche de Waterloo ou de Bruxelles.

Pourriez-vous nous dévoiler un petit peu plus sur le programme du Gala et des solistes ?

Le point central est évidemment le double concerto de Brahms, qui est une œuvre pour violon et violoncelle. C’est pour nous l’occasion de mettre en avant notre philosophie du compagnonnage citée précédemment. Il sera interprété par Gary Hoffman (ndlr. Maître en Résidence de la section violoncelle) et par Júlia Pusker (ndlr. 5ème prix du Concours Reine Elisabeth Finale violon 2019). Júlia est une artiste formidable avec laquelle nous avons établis une relation dans la durée et dont nous sommes extrêmement fiers.

Par ailleurs, le Concerto pour violoncelle nr. 2 de Dvořák sera également interprété ce soir-là. Le soliste n’a pas encore été déterminé.

En tous cas, ce sera l’un des candidats pour le Concours violoncelle 2022. Ce concerto sera d’ailleurs joué en finale.

Un dernier mot pour le public du Belgian National Orchestra ?

L’audience de l’Orchestre a toujours été importante. Et c’est pour nous indispensable d’avoir des moments où nous pouvons à la fois partager des moments avec votre public et le nôtre.

Ne fut-ce que pour découvrir ces jeunes artistes.

De coronacrisis en de bijhorende lockdowns gooiden echter roet in het eten en dwongen de Muziekkapel ertoe de geplande evenementen uit te stellen, waaronder het galaconcert, dat nu zal plaatsvinden op 14 maart 2022.

CEO Bernard de Launoit vertelt ons kort over het verleden en de toekomst van de Muziekkapel.

Uw instelling zal dus, zij het met enige vertraging, haar 80-jarige bestaan vieren, samen met het Belgian National Orchestra. Wat was de missie van de Muziekkapel toen ze werd opgericht?

En hoe is ze er door de jaren heen in geslaagd om relevant te blijven?

Na enige bezinning over onze educatieve benadering, zijn we in 2004 overgestapt op een model dat meer van deze tijd is, met zowel een nieuw artistiek curriculum als uitgebreide podiumervaring.

Voorheen kwamen de jongeren (voornamelijk uit België) rechtstreeks van het conservatorium met hun docent. Vandaag doen ze audities om met een bepaalde meester-docent samen te mogen werken, waardoor we het aantal disciplines moesten optrekken. In 2004 waren er nog drie disciplines. Dat zijn er inmiddels zes: viool, altviool, cello, piano, kamermuziek en zang.

Mettertijd is de evolutie overigens in een stroomversnelling gekomen. Naast de herstructurering van de inhoud, wilden we immers ook de kwaliteit van ons onderwijs optrekken en een meer internationale weg inslaan. Dat maakt dat we dit jaar 72 jongeren begeleiden, goed voor 28 verschillende nationaliteiten.

Na al die tijd kunnen we ons wel inbeelden dat er een hechte band is gegroeid tussen de Muziekkapel en het Belgian National Orchestra, zowel op menselijk als op artistiek vlak. Kunt u ons daar iets meer over vertellen?

Het is belangrijk te benadrukken dat beide instellingen ontstaan zijn in dezelfde periode: het interbellum. Het was een periode van culturele bloei: de bouw van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten, het Nationaal Instituut voor de Radio-omroep, het ontstaan van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd enz.

Historisch en contextueel gezien, zijn we dus nauw verwant aan het Belgian National Orchestra. In het licht van zijn missie geeft het Belgian National Orchestra bovendien enorm veel concerten, zowel in het noorden als het zuiden van het land. Dat maakt het orkest uniek. We beogen altijd duurzame samenwerkingsverbanden.

Zoals ik eerder al aangaf, moet ons hernieuwde model ook meer podiumervaring bieden. En precies daarin is een rol weggelegd voor het Belgian National Orchestra. In de afgelopen 20 jaar zijn we eveneens uitgegroeid tot concertpromotor en -partner. Zo bieden we onze jongeren tussen de 250 en 350 concerten per jaar aan. We moeten hen onder meer de mogelijkheid kunnen bieden om in symfonische orkesten te spelen, opdat zij de nodige professionele ervaringen kunnen opdoen.

Om de twee jaar speelt het Belgian National Orchestra de finale van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd. Dat biedt onze muzikanten de kans om jong en veelbelovend talent te begeleiden en met hen samen te spelen.

Sommige jonge talenten komen uit de Muziekkapel. Daaronder ook de winnaar van vorig jaar, Jonathan Fournel.

Hoe biedt u die getalenteerde jongeren de juiste omkadering, opdat zij het niveau zouden bereiken zoals we dat kennen van een finale?

De jongeren komen naar ons toe omwille van een zekere traditie, denk ik, in lijn met de keuze van de docenten. Onze docenten houden er een vrij gelijkaardige esthetiek op na, los van hun individuele persoonlijkheid. Bovendien kijken we wat de behoeften van deze jonge talenten zijn, met het oog op hun verdere ontplooiing.

We blijven overigens trouw aan de filosofie van de oprichter van de Muziekkapel, Eugène Ysaÿe: talent ondersteunen en de muzikale kunst overdragen. We houden vast aan de bestaansreden van deze plek: een residentie waar jongeren tijd kunnen doorbrengen, samen kunnen werken en de kans krijgen om met ervaren muzikanten te spelen die hen voorgingen.

In dat opzicht bieden we een alternatief voor de conservatoria: wij scheppen een omgeving waar ze in alle rust kunnen repeteren, in een eigen studio omringd door groen en vlak bij Waterloo en Brussel.

Kunt u een tipje van de sluier lichten over het programma van het galaconcert en de solisten?

Het Dubbelconcerto van Brahms voor viool en cello krijgt uiteraard een centrale plaats in het galaconcert. Het biedt ons de gelegenheid om onze eerdergenoemde begeleidingsfilosofie voor het voetlicht te brengen. Het dubbelconcert wordt gebracht door Gary Hoffman (n.v.d.r.: meester-docent in residentie voor de discipline cello) en Júlia Pusker (n.v.d.r.: vijfde prijs op de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd voor viool van 2019). Júlia is een uitmuntende artieste met wie we inmiddels een duurzame relatie onderhouden en op wie we buitengewoon trots zijn.

Daarnaast wordt ook het Tweede celloconcert van Dvořák die avond gebracht. De solist die dat werk zal spelen, is nog niet gekend. Het wordt in elk geval een van de kandidaten voor de wedstrijd voor cello van 2022. We zullen overigens de avond afsluiten met dat celloconcert.

Hebt u nog een laatste boodschap voor het publiek van het Belgian National Orchestra ?

Het Belgian National Orchestra heeft altijd al een groot publiek bereikt. En het is voor ons van cruciaal belang om muzikale momenten zowel met ons eigen publiek als met dat van het Belgian National Orchestra te kunnen delen, al was het maar om kennis te maken met deze jonge artiesten.

EN ⟶ The Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel began its 80th anniversary season in July 2019. The COVID pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns forced the institution to postpone several of the events they had planned, including their Gala concert. It will now be held on 14 March 2022. Bernard de Launoit, CEO, tells us about the history and the future of the Chapel.

With a bit of a delay, your institution will be celebrating its 80th anniversary with the Belgian National Orchestra. What were the Chapel’s objectives when it was founded? How does it retain its vitality after so many years?

Following a reflection on the relevance of our teaching methods, in 2004, we began to implement an updated model, which includes a new artistic curriculum, and aspects related to access to the stage.

The (mostly Belgian) young adults used to arrive with their professors when they came out of the conservatory. Now, they audition to work with a particular maestro, which means we’ve had to add more sections, from three in 2004 to six today: violin, viola, cello, piano, chamber music and singing.

The evolution has also accelerated over time. In addition to restructuring the content, we have sought to improve the quality of our teaching and to become more international. So much so, that this year we have 72 young people from 28 different nationalities.

After all this time, strong links must have been forged between the Chapel and the Orchestra, both on a human and artistic level. Could you tell us a little more about this?

It’s important to note that the two institutions were established at the same time, between the two world wars.

It was a time of great cultural vitality, which saw the birth of the Centre of Fine Arts, the Maison de la Radio, the Queen Elisabeth Competition, etc. Because of its history and context, we are very attached to the Orchestra. Moreover, the Belgian National Orchestra, partly because of its mission, gives a lot of concerts throughout the country. In this respect, it is unique. Our philosophy has been to establish long-term partnerships.

As I mentioned, the renewal of our model also involves access to the stage.

The Belgian National Orchestra has a role to play in this. In 20 years, we have also become a concert producer and partner. We now offer our youngsters between 250 and 350 concerts a year.

We also have them play in symphony orchestras so that they can add this experience to their professional portfolio.

Every two years, the Belgian National Orchestra plays the final concert of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. This is a time when our musicians have the opportunity to accompany and work with prodigious young talents, who usually perform at the Chapel. This was the case again with this year’s winner, Jonathan Fournel. How do you coach such talents to reach such a level?

I think that the young people who come to us are attracted by a certain tradition, particularly evident in our choice of professors, who have a similar aesthetic, in addition to their individual personalities. We also focus on what our talented youngsters need in order to advance.

We remain very much in line with the philosophy inspired by the creator of the Chapelle, Eugène Ysaÿe: companionship and the transmission of the art of music. We retain the spirit of this place, which is a place of residence, where young people can work and spend time together, where they still have the opportunity to play with their elders.

In reality, we offer something different from the conservatoires: we offer an environment where they can rehearse and concentrate in peace and quiet, in their studio and in a setting surrounded by nature, yet close to Waterloo and Brussels.

Could you tell us a little more about the Gala event calendar and the soloists?

The central focus is obviously Brahms’ Double Concerto, which is a work for violin and cello. This is an opportunity for us to put forward the philosophy of companionship that I spoke of earlier.

It will be performed by Gary Hoffman [cello master-in-residence] and Júlia Pusker [5th prize of the 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition Violin Finals].

Júlia is an incredible artist with whom we have a long-term relationship and of whom we are extremely proud.

We will also perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto No. 2. The soloist has not yet been chosen. In any case, it will be one of the candidates for the 2022 Cello Competition. This concerto will be played as the finale.

A final word for the audience of the Belgian National Orchestra?

The orchestra’s audience has always been important. And these opportunities are essential for us to share moments with both your audience and ours, and let alone to discover these young artists.

Un amour ardent FR ⟶ Le Belgian National Orchestra invite le dramaturge Mats Vandroogenbroeck à monter un spectacle pour les jeunes à partir d’extraits du Roméo et Juliette de Prokofiev. Pas simplement une adaptation de l’original mais un spectacle pour et avec des jeunes d’aujourd’hui. Nous l’avons rencontré dans son espace de répétition au Dok Noord, à Gand.

Les extraits ont été sélectionnés par le chef principal Hugh Wolff. Vous connaissiez déjà cette musique ?

Prokofiev, je le connais par Pierre et le loup. J’en ai eu à l’époque une cassette vidéo que j’ai énormément regardée. En revanche, je ne connaissais pas Roméo et Juliette, sauf peut-être la Danse des chevaliers. C’est un passage très emblématique ! Les extraits sélectionnés par Hugh Wolff racontent en fait toute l’histoire. La musique est incroyablement narrative, elle évoque absolument tout : le bal masqué, la scène du balcon, la mort de Tybalt et, à la fin, la tombe des Capulet. Je n’ai pas étudié la musique mais c’est précisément cela qui rend ce défi passionnant. La musique traduit tellement d’émotions. Il suffit que je l’écoute pour que des images me viennent à l’esprit. C’est sur cette base que je travaille.

Qu’est-ce qui vous interpelle dans la tragédie de Shakespeare ?

Ce qui me plaît beaucoup, c’est qu’elle a pour thème un amour adolescent. La pièce est généralement interprétée par des acteurs de 18-20 ans, mais lorsqu’on lit attentivement Shakespeare, on s’aperçoit que Roméo et Juliette avaient plutôt 13 ou 14 ans. Au début de la pièce, Roméo évoque encore une autre jeune fille. Mais lorsqu’il voit Juliette pour la première fois, c’est le coup de foudre. Leur amour est d’emblée extrêmement passionnel. Les deux amoureux s’abandonnent aveuglément à leurs sentiments. Il y a quelque chose de terriblement puéril dans tout cela, mais c’est ce qui fait précisément la beauté et la force de leur amour. Un amour psychotique, un amour fou entre deux adolescents, un amour qui fait voler en éclats toute une constellation politique et qui est en rupture avec le conservatisme pourtant bien enraciné…

Essayez-vous de rester fidèle à l’original ou apportez-vous des modifications importantes ?

Ce qui m’intéresse moins chez Shakespeare, ce sont les relations hommes-femmes traditionnelles.

Roméo, archétype du séducteur macho, doit prendre l’initiative, alors que Juliette attend que les choses se fassent et se contente de suivre. Avec quelques autres personnes, j’ai un jour monté un Roméo et Juliette dans lequel Roméo avait le texte de Juliette et vice versa. Le spectacle a cartonné ! Ici, avec le Belgian National Orchestra, nous allons encore plus loin : il n’y a que Juliette sur scène.

Elle fait la connaissance de Roméo dans un univers de jeux virtuel. Les grands

sentiments évoqués par Shakespeare sont parfaitement reconnaissables, même s’ils ne se vivent pas forcément dans le monde réel. Beaucoup de gens se font « du cinéma dans la tête ». C’est ce que fera Juliette, non pas au cinéma mais sur scène, pendant le spectacle.

Dans ce contexte, un monde virtuel offre énormément de possibilités.

Le monde numérique a souvent mauvaise presse. Les choses auraientelles changé avec la crise sanitaire ?

La critique culturelle de gauche a de fait souvent condamné la culture numérique et des écrans. Historien de formation, j’aimerais souligner qu’au lendemain de l’invention de l’imprimerie, on a vu paraître de très nombreux pamphlets critiquant le fait que les jeunes passaient la nuit à lire des livres dans leur lit, et s’abîmaient les yeux, au lieu d’aller jouer dehors. On a peine à imaginer aujourd’hui que lire un livre était mal vu !

Il n’empêche que les jeunes d’aujourd’hui sont totalement fascinés par internet et l’univers numérique, ils en sont accros. Je pense toutefois que rétrospectivement, on dira de notre époque qu’elle a connu un changement de paradigme incroyable avec l’avènement d’internet, comme ce fut le cas avec la découverte de l’imprimerie. C’est là une source de complexité qu’on n’imaginait pas encore il y a 10 à 20 ans. Avec, comme toujours, des conséquences à la fois positives et négatives.

Transposés dans ce monde numérique, Roméo et Juliette parviennentils à rester eux-mêmes dans votre spectacle ?

Dans la pièce de Shakespeare, ce n’est pas un hasard si Roméo et Juliette se rencontrent lors d’un bal masqué. L’amour naît de cette mystification. Et c’est là quelque chose de particulièrement intéressant, un point fort à exploiter. Dans le spectacle, les déguisements sont remplacés par l’utilisation d’avatars. Sur Facebook, certains se créent une personnalité numérique, avec des photos de vacances et des selfies. On connaît bien ce phénomène. Il s’agit évidemment d’une construction : les gens sont généralement moins heureux que leurs réseaux sociaux ne le laissent supposer.

Mais Facebook n’est qu’une première étape, l’imaginaire est encore peu développé. Les jeunes d’aujourd’hui sont déjà bien plus loin. Dans leurs mondes numériques, ils se sentent incroyablement libres de créer l’avatar de leur choix. Ils changent de sexe et définissent entièrement leur apparence.

C’est quelque chose de très beau à mes yeux, cette diversité me plaît énormément. Et pour répondre à votre question : la recherche montre que les jeunes qui évoluent dans un monde numérique avec leurs avatars vivent des expériences bien plus authentiques et sont bien plus eux-mêmes qu’à l’école par exemple, où ils doivent se conformer à des schémas et des attentes.

L’idée, c’est que les jeunes n’assistent pas seulement à un spectacle mais qu’ils en fassent eux-mêmes partie.

Comment allez-vous procéder ?

Avant le spectacle, nous donnerons des ateliers dans les écoles. Il y sera question de la musique de Prokofiev, mais aussi de l’identité des jeunes et la façon dont ils la vivent. Dans ces ateliers, les jeunes pourront concevoir des avatars numériques et leur donner vie, avec l’aide d’un artiste vidéaste.

Ces avatars seront projetés lors du spectacle, dans le monde numérique dans lequel Juliette rencontre Roméo.

Ce parcours de cocréation porte aussi sur le contenu. En ce qui me concerne, je ne vais pas uniquement me servir de la musique de Prokofiev, mais aussi du matériel conçu par les jeunes pendant les ateliers – petits textes, dessins, etc.

– pour écrire ma pièce. Les apports des jeunes serviront ainsi vraiment de fil conducteur.

Qui est Mats Vandroogenbroeck?

Mats Vandroogenbroeck (°1993) a terminé en 2019 une formation en dramaturgie à la KASK, à Gand. Avant cela, il a étudié l’histoire à l’UGent, en se spécialisant dans la magie et la sorcellerie du Moyen Âge tardif.

Parallèlement à sa carrière d’acteur et de metteur en scène, entre autres à la Kopergietery, au studio ORKA, à la Blauwhuis et au sein du collectif d’artistes ZUIDPARK, il monte avec Nona Demey Gallagher et Timo Sterckx, ses compagnons d’études, le collectif théâtral Krapp vzw, dont il écrit les textes. Leur fascination commune pour « le magique » est déjà au cœur de leurs spectacles « FAUST, 82

een mechanische komedie », « Through the Looking-Glass (and what we found there) » et « WEIRD TALES ». Le texte est considéré ici comme une longue incantation : ce que disent et pensent les personnages a une propension tenace à se réaliser. A côté de son travail de dramaturge, Mats pratique également l’écriture critique, entre autres en tant que membre de la rédaction du magazine culturel et de critique rekto:verso.

Een vulkanische liefde NL ⟶ Het Belgian National Orchestra nodigt theatermaker Mats Vandroogenbroeck uit om een jongerenvoorstelling te maken die uitgaat van Prokofievs Romeo en Julia.

Niet zomaar een navertelling van het origineel, maar een voorstelling voor en met jongeren van vandaag.

Een ontmoeting met Mats in zijn repetitieruimte in Dok Noord te Gent.

Chef-dirigent Hugh Wolff selecteerde de muziek. Kende je die voordien al?

Prokofiev deed wel een belletje rinkelen omwille van Peter en de wolf.

Daar had ik vroeger een videocassette van en die heb ik superveel bekeken.

Maar Romeo en Julia kende ik niet, nee, behalve dan misschien de Dans van de ridder. Dat is een heel herkenbaar stuk! De muziek die Hugh Wolff selecteerde, vertelt het hele verhaal. Het is ongelofelijk narratieve muziek. Je ziet alles voor je: het gemaskerd bal, de balkonscène, de dood van Tybalt en op het einde de tombe van de Capuletti’s. Ik ben niet muzikaal geschoold, maar dat maakt

het net bijzonder spannend. De muziek bevat zoveel emoties! Ik luister daar naar, er komen beelden bij me op en daarmee ga ik dan aan de slag.

Wat spreekt je aan in Shakespeares tragedie?

Wat cool is, is dat het eigenlijk over een puberliefde gaat. Meestal wordt het stuk gespeeld met 18- tot 20-jarigen, maar als je Shakespeare goed leest, dan blijkt dat Romeo en Julia eigenlijk eerder 13 à 14 jaar zijn. Romeo praat in het begin nog over een ander meisje. Wanneer hij Julia voor de eerste keer ziet, is dat een coup de foudre. Hun liefde is van meet af aan vulkanisch. Beiden geven zich blindelings over aan hun gevoelens. Het is super onvolwassen, maar daarom ook net zo krachtig en zo mooi. Een gekmakende, psychotische liefde van twee tieners die daardoor een hele politieke constellatie in de lucht doen vliegen, die breken met diepgeworteld conservatisme …

Probeer je trouw te zijn aan het origineel, of breng je ook belangrijke wijzigingen aan?

Wat mij bij Shakespeare minder interesseert, zijn de klassieke manvrouw verhoudingen. Romeo is de macho-verleider en moet het initiatief nemen terwijl Julia alles laat gebeuren en volgt. Samen met wat andere mensen heb ik al eens een Romeo en Julia gemaakt waarbij we alle tekst van Julia aan Romeo gaven en omgekeerd. Dat werkte keigoed. In de voorstelling met het Belgian National Orchestra gaan we nog een stap verder en staat enkel Julia op scène. Zij leert Romeo kennen in een virtuele gamewereld. De grote gevoelens waarover Shakespeare het

heeft, zijn heel herkenbaar, maar spelen zich niet noodzakelijk af in de echte wereld. Vele mensen beleven die in hun ‘breintoneel’ en dat zal in de voorstelling ook het geval zijn bij Julia. Een virtuele wereld maakt in die context veel mogelijk.

Vaak kijkt men heel negatief naar die digitale wereld, maar daar heeft de coronacrisis misschien nu iets aan veranderd?

In de linkse cultuurkritiek heeft men het digitale en de beeldschermcultuur inderdaad vaak sterk veroordeeld.

Vanuit mijn historische achtergrond moet ik echter opmerken dat toen de boekdrukpers net was uitgevonden, er ook heel veel pamfletten verschenen die aankaartten dat jongeren ’s nachts in hun bed boeken zaten te lezen en daarmee hun ogen kapot maakten terwijl ze eigenlijk buiten zouden moeten spelen. Een boek lezen werd als negatief ervaren, kan je je dat voorstellen?

Natuurlijk is er bij jongeren vandaag een zotte fascinatie voor het internet en de digitale wereld. Ik denk echt dat, als men later terugblikt op onze tijd, men de analyse zal maken dat er zich door het internet een zotte paradigmawissel heeft voltrokken, te vergelijken met het ontstaan van de boekdrukkunst.

Het internet is een zeer heftig en ook ontwrichtend medium. Het brengt een complexiteit met zich mee die men zich 10 à 20 jaar geleden nog niet kon voorstellen. Met, zoals bij alles het geval is, zowel positieve als negatieve gevolgen.

Kunnen Romeo en Julia, verplaatst in die digitale wereld, nog zichzelf zijn in jouw voorstelling?

In Shakespeares origineel is het betekenisvol dat Romeo en Julia elkaar leren kennen op een gemaskerd bal. Door de vermomming ontstaat de liefde. Dat vind ik een megaboeiend, sterk punt. In de voorstelling vertalen we dat naar het gebruik van Avatars. We kennen allemaal Facebook, waar mensen digitale persona creëren met vakantiefoto’s en selfies. Dat is natuurlijk een constructie: mensen zijn meestal minder gelukkig dan dat ze er op hun social media account uitzien. Nu, Facebook is echt een eerste stap die nog weinig verbeeldingsrijk is. Jongeren van vandaag staan al veel verder. In digitale werelden geven ze hun Avatars vorm met ongelofelijk veel vrijheid. Ze veranderen hun gender en bepalen volledig hoe ze er uit zien. Daar schuilt iets super moois in: een diversiteit die mij heel hard prikkelt. En om te antwoorden op jouw vraag: onderzoek geeft aan dat jongeren in een digitale wereld via Avatars veel authentiekere ervaringen hebben en veel meer zichzelf kunnen zijn dan bijvoorbeeld op school waar ze moeten voldoen aan heel wat verwachtingspatronen.

Het is de bedoeling dat jongeren niet alleen de voorstelling bezoeken, maar er ook zelf deel van uitmaken. Hoe functioneert dat?

Wij zullen voorafgaand aan de voorstelling workshops geven op scholen. Daarin wordt gepraat over de muziek van Prokofiev, maar evengoed over jongeren hun identiteit en de wijze waarop ze die beleven. Jongeren kunnen in die workshops digitale Avatars maken, die later met de hulp van een videokunstenaar 84

tot leven zullen worden gewekt. Deze avatars verschijnen dan in de voorstelling, in de digitale wereld waar Julia Romeo ontmoet. Het co-creatietraject is echter ook inhoudelijk. Ikzelf zal niet alleen de muziek van Prokofiev, maar ook al het materiaal dat door de jongeren tijdens de workshops gemaakt is – kleine tekstjes, tekeningen, eventuele andere zaken – gebruiken als input voor het schrijven van mijn theatertekst. Op die wijze wordt de inbreng van de jongeren echt richtinggevend.

Wie is Mats Vandroogenbroeck?

Mats Vandroogenbroeck (°1993) studeerde in 2019 af aan de opleiding drama aan het KASK in Gent. Daarvoor studeerde hij geschiedenis aan de UGent, met een focus op laatmiddeleeuwse magie en toverkunst.

Naast zijn werk als speler en maker bij o.a. de Kopergietery, studio ORKA, Blauwhuis en het kunstenaarscollectief ZUIDPARK richtte hij met klasgenoten Nona Demey Gallagher en Timo Sterckx het theatercollectief Krapp vzw op, waarvoor hij de teksten schrijft. A Volcanic Love EN ⟶ The Belgian National Orchestra invites playwright Mats Vandroogenbroeck to create a performance for young people based on Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. More than a straightforward retelling of the original, it’s a performance for and by the young people of today. We met Mats in his rehearsal space in Dok Noord, Ghent.

love at first sight. Their love is volcanic from the very start. Both give in blindly to their feelings. It’s very immature, and that’s what makes it so powerful and beautiful. A maddening, psychotic love between two teenagers who shatter an entire political constellation, who break with deep-rooted conservatism.

Principal conductor Hugh Wolff selected the music. Were you already familiar with it?

Prokofiev rang a bell because of Peter and the Wolf. I used to have a videotape of that which I watched a lot. But I didn’t know Romeo and Juliet, apart perhaps from the Dance of the Knights. That’s a very recognisable piece! The music that Hugh Wolff has selected tells the whole story. It’s incredibly narrative music. You can see it all before you: the masquerade ball, the balcony scene, the death of Tybalt and, in the end, the tomb of the Capulets. I didn’t receive a musical education but that makes it all the more exciting. The music has so many emotions! I listen to it and it evokes images, and then I get to work.

Are you trying to adhere closely to the original or are you making significant changes?

In the case of Shakespeare, I don’t find the classical male-female relationships that interesting. Romeo is the macho seducer and has to take the initiative while Juliet lets things happen and follows along. Along with some others, I once made a Romeo and Juliet in which we gave Juliet’s lines to Romeo and vice versa. It worked really well. The production with the Belgian National Orchestra takes it a step further and Juliet is alone on stage. She gets to know Romeo in a virtual gaming world. The big emotions that Shakespeare deals with are highly identifiable, but do not necessarily take place in the real world.

A lot of people experience these in their ‘brain theatre’ and, in this show, this is the case with Juliet. A virtual world opens up the possibilities in that context.

What do you like about Shakespeare’s tragedy?

The cool thing about it is that it’s actually about adolescent love. The piece is usually performed by people aged 18 to 20, but if you read Shakespeare closely then it seems Romeo and Juliet are actually around 13 or 14. At the start, Romeo talks about another girl. But when he sees Juliet for the first time, and it’s

People often see the digital world in a negative light, but has the Covid-19 crisis possibly changed that?

In the cultural criticism of the left, digital and screen culture has indeed been harshly judged. However, from my historical perspective, I must point out that when the printing press was newly invented, there were a lot of pamphlets noting that young people were reading 85

books in bed at night and ruining their eyesight while they should have been outside playing. Can you imagine reading a book being considered a bad thing? Of course, young people today have a crazy fascination and addiction for the internet and the digital world. But I really think that, when we look back at our era, we will come to the analysis that the internet has completed a weird paradigm shift comparable to the invention of the printing press. The internet is a highly intense and disruptive medium. It comes with an intensity we could not have imagined 10 or 20 years ago. And as is the case with everything, there are both positive and negative consequences.

Can Romeo and Juliet, relocated to the digital world, still be themselves in your show?

In Shakespeare’s original, the fact that Romeo and Juliet first become acquainted at a masquerade ball is significant. Love develops because of the disguise. I find this an extremely exciting and strong point. In the show, we translate this into the use of avatars.

We all know Facebook, where people create digital personas with holiday photos and selfies. It’s all a construct, of course: people are generally not as happy as they appear on their social media accounts. Now Facebook is really a first step that is not all that imaginative.

Today’s young people are already way beyond that. In digital worlds, they create avatars with an incredible amount of freedom. They can change gender and decide how they will look. There’s something beautiful in that: a diversity that I find really stimulating. And to answer your question, research shows 86

that young people in a digital world have much more authentic experiences through avatars and are able to be themselves much more than in school, for example, where they have to comply with a lot of patterns of expectation.

The idea is that young people not only attend the show but also take part in it.

How does that work?

We will hold workshops in schools prior to the performance. They will discuss the music of Prokofiev, as well as young people, their identity and how they perceive it. In these workshops, young people can create digital avatars and then bring them to life with the help of a video artist. These avatars then appear in the performance in the digital

world in which Juliet meets Romeo.

However, this is a process of co-creation in terms of content too. I will use not only the music of Prokofiev, but also all the material that the youngsters create during the workshops, such as texts, drawings, etc., as input when writing the play. In this way, it is very much guided by the young people’s input.

Who is Mats Vandroogenbroeck?

Mats Vandroogenbroeck (born in 1993) graduated from the drama course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent in 2019. Before that, he studied history at UGent, focusing on latemedieval magic and wizardry.

In addition to his work as an actor and director with the likes of the

Kopergietery, studio ORKA, Blauwhuis and the ZUIDPARK art collective, he set up the Krapp vzw theatre collective with his classmates Nona Demey Gallagher and Timo Sterckx, for which he writes the texts. FR ⟶ Le Russe d’origine allemande Alfred Schnittke est connu comme l’un des compositeurs symphoniques les plus passionnants de l’aprèsguerre. Sa musique irrésistible a déjà été plusieurs fois programmée par le Belgian National Orchestra.

Aujourd’hui, il interprète, pour la première fois en Belgique, la partition sans doute la plus exigeante d’Alfred Schnittke : Peer Gynt, un ballet de plus de deux heures pour grand orchestre.

Ne vous attendez pas à une exécution concertante mais (semi)-scénique, imaginée par une jeune équipe sous la direction Mien Bogaert.

Peer Gynt, c’est d’abord et surtout une pièce de théâtre du dramaturge norvégien Henrik Ibsen. Ce long drame poétique en vers date de 1867. À l’instar du Faust de Goethe, Peer Gynt compte énormément de personnages et se déroule un peu partout dans le monde.

Et surtout, le héros – Peer Gynt – est accompagné par le Diable déguisé.

Peer Gynt est un fanfaron qui entend mener sa vie comme il l’entend, au gré de ses envies, plutôt que d’affronter la réalité. Se sentant trop impur après avoir rencontré une fille du roi des trolls, il fuit son amour de jeunesse. Commence alors pour lui une vie d’errance aux quatre coins du monde qui l’amène à faire plus de mal que de bien. À la fin de sa vie, il finira cependant à rentrer chez lui. À l’instar de Faust, il est alors délivré par Solveig, son amour de jeunesse, qui l’a attendu pendant tout ce temps.

De nos jours, la pièce d’Ibsen est toujours régulièrement à l’affiche des théâtres. La musique de scène 90

composée par Edvard Grieg a elle aussi contribué à faire connaître l’histoire de ce fanfaron norvégien. Réordonnée en deux suites pour orchestre, elle compte parmi les morceaux de musique classique les plus populaires. Les titres des mouvements de cette suite orchestrale nous font découvrir les personnages principaux de la pièce : Ase, la mère de Peer Gynt, Ingrid, la fille du riche fermier, Solveig, le grand et véritable amour de Peer Gynt, le roi des trolls et l’exotique Anitra, qui en Afrique, séduira Peer Gynt.

La version ballet de John Neumeier L’histoire du Peer Gynt d’Alfred Schnittke commence avec le chorégraphe John Neumeier, directeur du Ballet de Hambourg depuis 1973. Dans les années 1980, il a décidé de créer un nouveau ballet, inspiré du Peer Gynt d’Ibsen.

Il a demandé à Alfred Schnittke, un compositeur dont il avait déjà utilisé la musique dans d’autres ballets, d’en assurer l’écriture musicale.

John Neumeier a lui-même écrit le libretto du ballet, restant largement fidèle à l’original, à deux éléments près. John Neumeier réinterprète les pérégrinations et errances de Peer Gynt à travers le monde en les resituant à Hollywood, où le héros tente de faire carrière comme danseur, acteur et finalement producteur de film. Tout comme dans la pièce d’Ibsen, Peer Gynt versera peu à peu dans la folie des grandeurs. Autre différence majeure, l’ajout d’un épilogue de 25 minutes.

John Neumeier en dit plus à ce propos : « Lorsque j’assiste à des représentations de la pièce Peer Gynt, je suis toujours immanquablement déçu par la fin.

Solveig a attendu Peer pendant très longtemps, mais quand il revient finalement vers elle, la pièce se termine abruptement. Je veux assister à leurs retrouvailles, voir comment ils se redécouvrent lentement, les émotions qu’ils ressentent alors… L’épilogue est le cœur spirituel et métaphysique de toute la pièce : un adagio sans fin, une ré-union tenant du rituel et qui a quelque chose de transcendant. »

Les expériences de mort imminente d’Alfred Schnittke « Réconcilier musique sérieuse et musique légère, c’est bien là le but que je me suis fixé, » affirmait Alfred Schnittke, ajoutant « même si je dois m’y casser les dents ». Jusqu’en 1990, ce compositeur et pianiste russe d’origine allemande vivait et travaillait à Moscou.

Il y a progressivement développé une technique de composition qu’il a qualifiée de « polystylistique » en s’inspirant principalement de Charles Ives, Luciano Berio et Bernd Alois Zimmermann. L’œuvre d’Alfred Schnittke ne se limite pas à des pièces de musique de chambre, des concertos et des symphonies, il a également composé près de 70 musiques de film. Ces partitions d’une très grande richesse font l’objet d’une redécouverte depuis le tournant du millénaire. Après l’effondrement de l’Union soviétique,

Alfred Schnittke s’est installé à Hambourg où il est mort en 1998.

Le terme « polystylistique » est toujours largement utilisé pour décrire le Peer Gynt de Schnittke. Sur un mode d’une extrême exubérance, la partition associe en effet l’héritage de compositeurs tels que Shostakovich et Mahler, le sérialisme de Darmstadt, le jazz, tango et bien d’autres styles musicaux. Pourtant, son Peer Gynt est bien plus qu’un pot-pourri, qu’un ensemble hétérogène de citations musicales auxquelles il recourt – toujours et toujours – de manière inappropriée et ironique quand il ne les détourne pas monstrueusement. La musique de ballet du premier acte – illustrative et regorgeant de clichés – revient altérée et aliénée dans le troisième acte.

Musicalement, l’on peut finalement voir dans les trois actes un long prologue précédant un épilogue magistral : tout le matériel musical s’y retrouve, mais en étant exploité sous une autre perspective. Sub species aeternitatis.

Cinq chœurs (enregistrés) produisent des ombres sonores qui plongent le spectateur dans une expérience quasi mystique.

En 1985, Alfred Schnittke est victime d’un premier infarctus qui le laisse plusieurs mois dans le coma. Il sera même déclaré par trois fois cliniquement mort. Les expériences de mort imminente dont il s’est souvenu à la sortie de son coma ont été sa principale source d’inspiration pour l’épilogue de Peer Gynt.

Des étincelles d’irrationnalité Le Belgian National Orchestra s’associe au Klarafestival et à Bozar pour la création en Belgique du Peer Gynt de Schnittke, dans la salle Henry Le Bœuf du Palais. La mise en scène a été confiée à une jeune équipe dirigée par Mien Bogaert, dramaturge et scénographe de l’orchestre. Cette mise en scène fait découvrir une installation monumentale – au-dessus de l’orchestre, dirigé par le chef danois Michael Schønwandt – associant chorégraphie filmée de deux danseurs et un acteur en scène jouant des personnages de l’œuvre originale d’Ibsen. La chorégraphie est confiée à Talitha De Decker, l’installation vidéo à Benjamien Lycke.

La « composition » de Peer Gynt, le jeune homme qui ne veut pas grandir et qui est atteint de la folie des grandeurs, a été conçue par le costumier et maquilleur Dennis Peschke : un Peer Gynt presque nu, seulement vêtu d’un sous-vêtement et arborant sur la tête une couronne. Il n’a plus aucun repère, hormis son corps qui danse. « Tous les personnages que Peer rencontre sont le fruit de son imagination et portent des masques. Ils ne reflètent pas la réalité, mais incarnent les peurs et images effrayantes que Peer ne cesse de fuir. Seule Solveig nous apparaît à visage découvert. Elle seule a un accès direct au jeune homme. » « Peer Gynt symbolise cette part de nous-mêmes qui écarte les vérités désagréables pour pouvoir continuer à vivre, » explique Mien Bogaert. « Le 92

problème ne se situe pas au niveau du savoir. Nous savons tous que notre mode de vie actuel n’est pas durable, que tout acte de consommation est source d’injustice pour d’autres et – si nous voyons vraiment les choses en noir – que notre présence sur cette planète cause nettement plus de tort que de bien. Pourtant, nous vivons. Peer Gynt représente cette part, cette étincelle d’irrationnalité qui cautionne nos actes jour après jour. Cette part de nous-même, qui nous rend précisément humains, recèle une incroyable dose de beauté. » NL ⟶ De Sovjet-Duitse componist Alfred Schnittke staat bekend als een van de meest boeiende naoorlogse symfonici. Zijn overweldigende muziek stond reeds meermaals op het programma van het Belgian National Orchestra. Nu brengen we de Belgische première van misschien wel Alfred Schnittkes meest veeleisende werk: een groot bezet, meer dan twee uur lang durend ballet met als titel Peer Gynt. Niet concertant, maar geënsceneerd door een jong team onder leiding van Mien Bogaert.

Peer Gynt is eerst en vooral een toneelstuk van de Noorse schrijver Henrik Ibsen. Hij schreef dit lange dramatische gedicht in verzen in 1867.

Net als Goethes Faust telt Peer Gynt ontzettend veel personages, speelt het stuk zich af op talloze locaties en wordt het hoofdpersonage door een soort duivelsfiguur begeleid. Peer Gynt is de losbol die zijn leven geen richting kan geven en liever in zijn eigen fantasie leeft dan de realiteit te confronteren. Hij loopt weg van zijn jeugdliefde omdat

hij zich – na een ontmoeting met een trollendochter – te verontreinigd voelt, zwerft daarna een hele tijd doorheen de wereld, richt meer kwaad uit dan goed en keert op het einde van zijn leven terug naar huis. Daar wordt hij op Faustiaanse wijze ‘verlost’ door zijn jeugdliefde Solveig – die al die tijd op hem heeft zitten wachten.

Ibsens toneelstuk wordt vandaag nog steeds met de regelmaat van de klok opgevoerd. Het verhaal over de Noorse losbol kreeg daarnaast extra bekendheid door de toneelmuziek die Edvard Grieg voor Peer Gynt schreef. Gebundeld tot twee orkestsuites behoort deze muziek intussen tot de hitparade van de klassieke muziek. De titels van de delen van deze orkestsuite laten kennismaken met de belangrijkste personages: Peer Gynts moeder Ase, de rijke boerendochter Ingrid, Peer Gynts ware liefde Solveig, de trollenkoning en de exotische Anitra die Peer Gynt in Afrika weet te verleiden.

John Neumeiers balletversie Het verhaal van de Peer Gynt die Alfred Schnittke schreef, begint bij de Amerikaanse choreograaf John Neumeier. Hij is sinds 1973 (en tot op de dag van vandaag) balletdirecteur van de Hamburgische Staatsoper. In de jaren 1980 besloot hij een nieuw ballet te maken, gebaseerd op Ibsens Peer Gynt. Voor de muziek engageerde hij Alfred Schnittke, een componist wiens muziek hij al een paar keer in andere balletvoorstellingen had gebruikt.

Het libretto van zijn balletvoorstelling schreef John Neumeier zelf. Daarbij bleef hij in hoge mate trouw aan Ibsens origineel, op twee belangrijke wijzigingen na. Peer Gynts omzwervingen doorheen de wereld interpreteerde John Neumeier als een poging om in Hollywood als danser, acteur en uiteindelijk ook filmproducer carrière te maken. Net als bij Ibsen gaat Peer Gynt daarbij gaandeweg aan grootheidswaanzin ten onder. De tweede belangrijke wijziging is de toevoeging van een 25 minuten durende epiloog.

“Als ik theaterversies van Peer Gynt bezoek,” zo vertelt John Neumeier, “stelt het einde me steeds teleur. Solveig heeft zo lang op Peer gewacht, maar als hij uiteindelijk bij haar aankomt, is het stuk meteen gedaan. Ik wil hun samenzijn beleven, hoe ze zich langzaam naar elkaar toebuigen, de emoties die ze daarbij voelen … De epiloog is de spirituele en metafysische kern van het hele stuk: een eindeloos adagio, een ritueel samenkomen voorbij al het reële.”

De nabije-doodervaringen van Alfred Schnittke “Serieuze en lichte muziek met elkaar verenigen, dat is het doel van mijn leven,” zo beweerde Alfred Schnittke ooit: “ook al breek ik daarbij misschien wel mijn nek.” Tot 1990 woonde en werkte deze Sovjet-Duitse componist en pianist in Moskou. Daar ontwikkelde hij gaandeweg een polystilistische compositietechniek met Charles Ives, Luciano Berio en Bernd Alois Zimmermann als voornaamste 93

inspiratiebronnen. Naast kamermuziek, concerti en symfonieën schreef Alfred Schnittke muziek voor ongeveer 70 verschillende films. Deze bijzonder rijke partituren worden sinds de millenniumwissel opnieuw ontdekt. Na de ineenstorting van de Sovjet-Unie verhuisde Alfred Schnittke naar Hamburg waar hij uiteindelijk in 1998 overleed.

Polystilistiek is nog steeds een belangrijke term om Schnittkes Peer Gynt te karakteriseren. Op uiterst exuberante wijze verenigt de partituur de erfenissen van componisten als Shostakovich en Mahler, het serialisme uit Darmstadt, jazz, tango en nog zoveel meer. Toch is Peer Gynt meer dan een bonte potpourri aan muziekcitaten die steeds weer oneigenlijk, ironisch en zelfs monsterlijk verdraaid worden gebruikt. De balletmuziek uit het eerste bedrijf – illustratief en vol clichés – keert in het derde bedrijf vervreemd terug. Uiteindelijk blijken de drie bedrijven muzikaal gezien één grote proloog te vormen voor de magistrale epiloog. Al het muzikale materiaal keert hierin terug, maar bekeken vanuit een ander perspectief.

In 1985 kreeg Alfred Schnittke een eerste hartaanval. Enkele maanden lang was hij buiten bewustzijn en tot driemaal toe werd hij klinisch dood verklaard.

De bijna-doodervaringen die hij zich bij het ontwaken herinnerde, vormden zijn voornaamste inspiratiebron voor de muziek van de epiloog van Peer Gynt.

Gensters irrationaliteit Het Belgian National Orchestra werkt samen met Klarafestival en Bozar voor de Belgische première van Schnittkes Peer Gynt en engageerde een jong team onder leiding van regisseur en scenograaf Mien Bogaert om het werk in de Henry Le Bœufzaal te ensceneren.

Boven het orkest, geleid door de Deense dirigent Michael Schønwandt, wordt een monumentale installatie gebouwd waarin en waarop twee dansers en een acteur – zowel live als in video’s – aan de slag gaan met de originele personages uit Ibsens Peer Gynt. De choreografie is in handen van Talitha De Decker.

Kostuumontwerper en make-up artist Dennis Peschke zet Peer Gynt, de jonge man die niet volwassen wil worden en aan grootheidswaanzin leidt, quasi naakt op het podium met een papieren kroon, een onderbroek en zijn eigen danslichaam als enige betekenisgevers.

“Alle personages die Peer ontmoet, maken deel uit van zijn fantasie en dragen maskers. Ze weerspiegelen niet de realiteit, maar belichamen de angstbeelden waarvoor Peer voortdurend op de loop is. Enkel Solveig draagt geen masker. Zij heeft als enige een directe toegang tot Peer.”

“Peer Gynt is dat deel van onze persoonlijkheid dat onaangename waarheden aan de kant schuift om door te kunnen gaan met het leven,” zo vertelt Mien Bogaert. “Kennis is niet het probleem. We weten allemaal dat onze huidige levensstijl niet duurzaam

is, dat we bij elke consumptie iemand onrecht aandoen en dat – als we heel pessimistisch zijn – onze aanwezigheid op deze planeet meer kwaad dan goed berokkend. Toch leven we. Peer Gynt is de genster irrationaliteit die ons handelen elke dag weer vergoelijkt. In die genster, datgene wat ons mensen tot mens maakt, schuilt een ongelofelijke dosis schoonheid.”

EN ⟶ The Soviet-German composer Alfred Schnittke is known as one of the most exciting post-war symphonists. His overpowering music has featured on the programmes of the Belgian National Orchestra numerous times. We now present the Belgian premiere of what may be Alfred Schnittke’s most demanding work: a ballet with a large orchestra over two hours long, entitled Peer Gynt. Not a concert performance but one staged by a young team under the supervision of Mien Bogaert.

Peer Gynt is first and foremost a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.

He wrote this long, dramatic verse poem in 1867. Like Goethe’s Faust, Peer Gynt has an incredible number of characters, the play takes place in countless locations, and the main character is accompanied by a kind of devil figure.

Peer Gynt is the rake who is unable to give his life any direction and prefers to live within his own imagination than to confront reality. He leaves his childhood sweetheart as he feels too unclean following an encounter with the daughter of a troll. He then drifts all over the world for a spell, causing more harm than good, and returns home at the end of his days.

There he is ‘redeemed’ in the Faustian manner by his childhood love Solveig – who has been patiently waiting for him all this time.

Ibsen’s story is still regularly performed today. The story of the Norwegian rake gained further in popularity thanks to the theatrical music that Edvard Grieg wrote for Peer Gynt. Collected into two orchestral suites, this music is now among classical music’s greatest hits. The titles of the movements of this orchestral suite introduce us to the key characters: Peer Gynt’s mother Ase, the wealthy farmer’s daughter Ingrid, Peer Gynt’s true love Solveig, the troll king and the exotic Anitra who Peer Gynt seduces in Africa.

John Neumeier’s ballet version The story of the Peer Gynt that Alfred Schnittke composed starts with the American choreographer John Neumeier. He has been ballet director at the Hamburgische Staatsoper since 1973 (and continues to this day). In the 1980s, he decided to create a new ballet based on Ibsen’s Peer Gynt. He commissioned Alfred Schnittke, a composer whose music he had already used a few times in other ballet performances.

John Neumeier wrote his own libretto for the ballet. He largely adhered to Ibsen’s original apart from two significant changes. John Neumeier interpreted Peer Gynt’s wanderings through the world as an attempt to make it in Hollywood as a dancer, actor and eventually a movie producer.

As in Ibsen’s tale, Peer Gynt gradually descends into delusions of grandeur.

The second major departure is the addition of a 25-minute epilogue.

‘When I attend theatrical versions of Peer Gynt,’ says John Neumeier, ‘the ending is always a disappointment. Solveig has waited so long for Peer but when he finally makes it back to her, the piece is immediately over. I want to experience their togetherness, how they gradually grow towards each other, the emotions they go through... the epilogue is the spiritual and metaphysical core of the whole piece: an endless adagio, a ritual coming together beyond all that is real.’

Alfred Schnittke’s near-death experiences ‘Uniting serious and light music, that is the purpose of my life,’ Alfred Schnittke once claimed: ‘even if I break my neck doing so.’ Until 1990, this Soviet-German composer and pianist lived and worked in Moscow. There, he developed over time a polystylist composition technique inspired primarily by Charles Ives, Luciano Berio and Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Along with chamber music, concertos and symphonies, Alfred Schnittke wrote music for around 70 different films. These extremely rich scores have been rediscovered since the turn of the millennium. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Alfred Schnittke moved to Hamburg where he passed away in 1998.

Polystylism is still a relevant term with which to characterise Schnittke’s Peer Gynt. The score unites in an extremely exuberant fashion the heritages of composers like Shostakovich and Mahler, the serialism of Darmstadt, jazz, tango and so much more. Even so, Peer Gynt is more than a colourful potpourri of musical quotations that are in turn used in improper, ironic and even monstrous ways. The ballet music in the first movement – illustrative and laden with clichés – returns in alienated form in the third. Ultimately it becomes clear that the three movements are one great musical prologue to the majestic epilogue. All of the musical material recurs but from a different perspective.

Sub species aeternitatis. Five choirs (on tape) produce shadowy sounds that immerse the listener in an almost mystical experience.

In 1985, Alfred Schnittke suffered his first heart attack. He was unconscious for several months and was declared clinically dead three times. The neardeath experiences that he recalled on awakening formed the main inspiration for the music in the epilogue of Peer Gynt.

Sparks of irrationality The Belgian National Orchestra is working with Klarafestival and Bozar on the Belgian premiere of Schnittke’s Peer Gynt and has recruited a young team under the guidance of director and scenographer Mien Bogaert to stage the work in the Henry Le Bœuf Hall.

Costume designer and make-up artist Dennis Peschke has put a quasi-naked Peer Gynt, the young man who does not want to grow up and suffers from delusions of grandeur, on the stage with a paper crown, underpants and his own dancing body as the only sources of meaning. ‘All of the characters that Peer meets are part of his imagination and wear masks. They do not represent reality but embody the visions of fear from which Peer is continually on the run.

Only Solveig wears no mask. She is the only one who has direct access to Peer.’

‘Peer Gynt is that part of our personality that shoves unpleasant truths aside in order to be able to get on with life,’ says Mien Bogaert. ‘Knowledge is not the problem. We all know that our current lifestyles are not sustainable, that everything we consume harms someone and that – if we’re very pessimistic – our presence on the planet does more harm than good. But yet we live. Peer Gynt is the spark of irrationality that condones our behaviour every day. That spark, that which makes us human, conceals an incredible dose of beauty.’

Prokofiev Revisited Pour les 12- 18 ans

Le petit éléphant Babar entraîne les plus jeunes – les enfants de 2e et 3 e maternelle et du premier degré de l’enseignement primaire – dans une aventure musicale passionnante.

Tandis que l’orchestre joue le Carnaval des animaux de SaintSaëns et l’Histoire de Babar le petit éléphant de Poulenc, l’illustratrice Camille Scherrer remplit la salle Henri le Bœuf d’animaux en tous genres.

Des jeunes de l’enseignement secondaire participent à la conception de Prokofiev Revisited, un spectacle dirigé par le chef principal Hugh Wolff et mis en scène par le jeune dramaturge gantois Mats Vandroogenbroeck. Celui-ci s’attaque à l’histoire séculaire de Roméo et Juliette, crée des avatars avec les jeunes et leur demande si les ressorts de l’amour à l’ère du numérique sont les mêmes que du temps de Shakespeare. L’orchestre interprète des extraits de l’impressionnant ballet Roméo et Juliette du compositeur russe Sergei Prokofiev.

SING 4.0 Pour les 8-12 ans

DES PROJETS JEUNESSE À LA MESURE DES ÉCOLES FR —› Faire découvrir la musique classique aux enfants et aux jeunes, à savoir le public de demain, est une mission essentielle du Belgian National Orchestra. Et cela, nous le faisons en organisant, en collaboration avec des écoles belges, d’Ostende à Virton, des spectacles pour différentes catégories d’âge.

Nous mettons ici tout en œuvre pour faire de ce qui est souvent le premier contact avec la musique classique une expérience totale captivante, dont de nombreux jeunes se souviendront peut-être toute leur vie.

Les enfants du deuxième et troisième degré de l’enseignement primaire découvrent des œuvres comme la Neuvième Symphonie de Beethoven (« Ode à la Joie »), La Moldau de Smetana et Tableaux d’une exposition de Moussorgski. Interdit de rester assis bien sagement quand le Belgian National Orchestra se met à en jouer des extraits dans la salle Henry Le Bœuf : les enfants sont invités à danser et à chanter bien évidemment !

Les spectacles scolaires (proposés en collaboration avec Bozar) se déroulent tout comme nos concerts habituels dans la superbe salle Henry Le Bœuf, avec l’orchestre au complet.

Grâce à des préparations adaptées aux différentes catégories d’âge ainsi qu’à des discussions après le spectacle, nous faisons en sorte que les enfants et les jeunes ne soient pas de simples spectateurs, mais qu’ils participent activement à nos concerts. Dans certains cas, nous lançons même de véritables trajets de cocréation.

ORCHESTRA ACADEMY ET MASTERCLASSES POUR LES ÉTUDIANTS DE CONSERVATOIRE Pour le Belgian National Orchestra, investir dans l’avenir, c’est aussi accompagner les musiciens en formation. Pour concrétiser cette mission, nous avons fondé en collaboration avec La Monnaie, l’Orchestra Academy. Chaque saison, nous sélectionnons des étudiants de conservatoire prometteurs. Ces musiciens de demain assistent à un concert symphonique du Belgian National Orchestra ou à un programme lyrique ou symphonique de La Monnaie. Pendant la saison, nous organisons aussi des ateliers et des

rencontres professionnelles pour ces étudiants de conservatoire. Une façon pour ces musiciens-étudiants de découvrir la vie d’un orchestre et d’acquérir une précieuse expérience professionnelle.

Des masterclasses sont par ailleurs assurées par des solistes qui se produisent avec notre orchestre.

Tous les étudiants de conservatoire intéressés peuvent y participer. Les élèves de l’Orchestra Academy jouent ici un rôle actif. Une masterclass avec la grande violoniste moldave Patricia Kopatchinskaja leur a été proposée au début de la saison. Une deuxième masterclass sera organisée bientôt avec des solistes du Festival Shostakovich.

YOUNG AMBASSADORS En plus d’investir dans les musiciens de demain, le Belgian National Orchestra mise aussi sur le public de demain. Comment ? En collaborant avec les Young Ambassadors, un groupe de jeunes, tous étudiants de conservatoire, qui ont un accès privilégié aux concerts du Belgian National Orchestra. Ils nous expliquent comment mieux toucher le public des jeunes adultes et via les réseaux sociaux – qu’ils maîtrisent – parlent avec enthousiasme des concerts du Belgian National Orchestra, leur donnant ainsi envie de tenter l’expérience. Les Young Ambassadors rassemblent au total une vingtaine de jeunes.

JEUGDPROJECTEN OP MAAT VAN SCHOLEN NL —› Kinderen en jongeren in aanraking brengen met klassieke muziek, dat is een van de missies van het Belgian National Orchestra. Dit doen we door in samenwerking met scholen, van Oostende tot Virton, voorstellingen voor verschillende leeftijdscategorieën te organiseren.

Daarbij doen we er alles aan om dit (vaak) eerste contact met klassieke muziek om te toveren tot een beklijvende totaalervaring, iets wat jongeren zich misschien wel voor de rest van hun leven zullen herinneren.

Schoolvoorstellingen vinden net als onze reguliere concerten met een volle orkestbezetting plaats in de prachtige Henry Le Bœufzaal.

Voorbereidingen op maat van de verschillende leeftijdsgroepen zowel als nagesprekken zorgen ervoor dat kinderen en jongeren onze concerten niet enkel passief genieten, maar er ook actief aan deelnemen. In sommige gevallen worden er zelfs heuse co-creatie-trajecten opgestart.

Kinderen uit de tweede en derde graad van het lager onderwijs leren werken kennen als Beethovens Negende symfonie (Ode an die Freude), Smetana’s Moldau en Mussorgsky’s Schilderijen van een tentoonstelling. Wanneer het Belgian National Orchestra deze muziekstukken uitvoert in de Henry Le Bœufzaal is stilzitten ten strengste verboden: meedansen en natuurlijk ook meezingen is de boodschap!

Prokofiev Revisited Voor 12- tot 18-jarigen Jongeren uit het secundair onderwijs werken mee aan Prokofiev Revisited, een voorstelling gedirigeerd door chef-dirigent Hugh Wolff en geënsceneerd door de jonge Gentse theatermaker Mats Vandroogenbroeck. Hij gaat aan de slag met het eeuwenoude Romeoen Juliaverhaal, creëert samen met jongeren digitale avatars en stelt hen de vraag of liefde in een digitaal tijdperk nog op dezelfde manier functioneert als ten tijde van Shakespeare. Het orkest speelt delen uit het indrukwekkende ballet Romeo en Julia van de Russische componist Sergei Prokofiev.

ORCHESTRA ACADEMY EN MASTERCLASSES VOOR CONSERVATORIUMSTUDENTEN Investeren in de muzikanten van de toekomst is een andere missie van het Belgian National Orchestra. In samenwerking met de Munt richtten we hiertoe de Orchestra Academy op. Elk seizoen selecteren we een 20-tal beloftevolle conservatoriumstudenten die onder begeleiding van een coach – een ervaren orkestmusicus – kunnen meespelen in zowel het orkest van de Munt als dat van het Belgian National Orchestra. Zo maken student-muzikanten kennis met het orkestleven en doen ze waardevolle praktijkervaringen op.

Daarnaast organiseren we ook masterclasses gegeven door solisten die optreden met ons orkest. Alle geïnteresseerde conservatoriumstudenten kunnen aan deze masterclasses deelnemen.

Studenten van de Orchestra Academy spelen een actieve rol. In het begin van dit seizoen stond een masterclass met de Moldavische stervioliste Patricia Kopatchinskaja gepland en binnenkort wordt een tweede masterclass met solisten van het Shostakovichfestival georganiseerd.

YOUNG AMBASSADORS Naast in de muzikanten van de toekomst, investeert het Belgian National Orchestra ook in het publiek van de toekomst. Dit doen we samen met de Young Ambassadors, een groep van jonge conservatoriumstudenten die een geprivilegieerde toegang hebben tot de concerten van het Belgian National Orchestra. Zij geven ons advies over hoe we jongeren beter kunnen bereiken en gebruiken hun social media skills om andere jongeren voor concerten van het Belgian National Orchestra te enthousiasmeren. De Young Ambassadors is een groep van zo’n 20-tal mensen die continu wordt vernieuwd.

Babar and the Carnival of the Animals For 5- to 8-year-olds

Prokofiev Revisited For 12- to 18-year-olds

The very youngest – the second and third infants classes and the first year of junior school – join Babar the elephant on a musical adventure.

While the orchestra plays SaintSaëns’ Carnival des animaux and Poulenc’s Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant, illustrator Camille Scherrer transforms the Henry Le Bœuf Hall into a great musical zoo.

Secondary school students collaborate on Prokofiev Revisited, a performance conducted by Principal Conductor Hugh Wolff and staged by the young Ghent dramatist Mats Vandroogenbroeck. He takes on the centuries-old tale of Romeo and Juliet, creating digital avatars with the youngsters and asking them whether love in the digital age functions in the same way as in the days of Shakespeare. The orchestra plays excerpts from the impressive ballet Romeo and Juliet by the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.

EN —› Bringing children and young people into contact with classical music is one of the Belgian National Orchestra’s core missions. We fulfil this by working with schools from Ostend to Virton to organise performances for different age categories. We do everything we can to turn this contact with classical music – often the first – into a captivating, all-consuming experience, maybe even something the children will remember for the rest of their lives.

Children from the second and third years of junior school are introduced to works such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (Ode to Joy), Smetana’s Moldau and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. When the Belgian National Orchestra plays these pieces of music in the Henry Le Bœuf Hall, sitting still is not allowed: get up and dance and sing along!

School performances, (in partnership with Bozar) like our regular concerts with a full orchestra, take place in the beautiful Henry Le Bœuf Hall.

Preparations to suit the different age groups and discussions afterwards ensure that children and young people do not just passively enjoy our concerts but take an active part in them. In some cases, we even start off actual co-creative processes.

ORCHESTRA ACADEMY AND MASTERCLASSES FOR CONSERVATORY STUDENTS For the Belgian National Orchestra, investing in the future also means considering musicians in training.

To this end, in partnership with La Monnaie/De Munt, we have established the Orchestra Academy.

Each season, we select promising conservatory students. The selected musicians in waiting take part in one symphonic production with the Belgian National Orchestra and one lyric or symphonic programme with De Munt. Workshops and professional encounters are also organised throughout the season for these conservatory students. In this way, music students get to experience the orchestral life and gain valuable practical experience.

YOUNG AMBASSADORS As well as the musicians of the future, the Belgian National Orchestra is also investing in the audience of the future. We are doing this with the Young Ambassadors, a group of young conservatory students who receive privileged access to concerts by the Belgian National Orchestra. They advise us on how better to reach young people and use their social media skills to interest other young people in concerts by the Belgian National Orchestra. The Young Ambassadors comprise around twenty young people in total.

We also organise masterclasses by soloists who perform with our orchestra. Any interested conservatory students can take part in these masterclasses. Students from the Orchestra Academy play an active part. A masterclass with star Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja was arranged for the start of the season and a second masterclass involving soloists from the Shostakovich Festival will soon be organised.

Hoe wordt u een van onze Ambassadeurs?

U kiest uit twee formules.

WELKOM BIJ DE AMBASSADEURS VAN HET BELGIAN NATIONAL ORCHESTRA NL — Muziek roept bij iedereen andere emoties op en dat maakt elk concert van het Belgian National Orchestra voor iedereen zo’n bijzondere en individuele beleving. Het is dan ook onze missie om de diepten van de menselijke ziel te verkennen. Het gevarieerde programmaaanbod is hiervoor een rijke stimulans.

Maar muziek moet ook verenigen.

Veel trouwe bezoekers van onze voorstellingen willen dan ook hun betrokkenheid bij het Belgian National Orchestra een extra dimensie geven. Daarom hebben we een concept ontwikkeld om u dichter bij onze muzikanten, andere bezoekers en de wereld van het Belgian National Orchestra te brengen: Ambassadeurs.

Hoe wordt uw ervaring als een van onze Ambassadeurs verrijkt?

Ambassadeurs is een groep van mensen gepassioneerd door hetzelfde: liefde voor onvergetelijke muzikale ervaringen.

Geven, maar daarvoor veel terugkrijgen. Dat is de filosofie van het Ambassadeurs-concept. Als Ambassadeur ontmoet u tijdens exclusieve momenten andere muziekliefhebbers die uw passie delen. Bijvoorbeeld tijdens de twee ontmoetingsmomenten met onze muzikanten. Een unieke gelegenheid om met hen van gedachten te wisselen en hen beter te leren kennen.

Daarnaast bent u welkom op twee besloten generale repetities, een bijzondere beleving. Dat geldt evenzeer voor uw aanwezigheid op de voorstelling van het nieuwe seizoen. Een heerlijk voorproefje van onvergetelijke momenten in de loop van het jaar. Daarnaast nodigt intendant Hans Waege u persoonlijk uit voor twee inleidingen op een concert waarin hij duiding geeft. U ontvangt informatie over de data en inhoud van deze evenementen in de speciale nieuwsbrief voor onze Ambassadeurs.

WELCOME TO THE AMBASSADORS OF THE BELGIAN NATIONAL ORCHESTRA EN — Music evokes different emotions in everyone and that’s what makes every concert of the Belgian National Orchestra such a special and individual experience for each of us.
