Rhythm !

NL —› “Al lang voordat er filosofen bestonden, achtte men de muziek in staat de affecten te ontladen, de ziel te reinigen, de ferocia animi (de woestheid van de ziel) te verzachten en wel juist door het ritmische in de muziek.” Zo schrijft Friedrich Nietzsche, een denker die als filoloog intensief onderzoek deed naar ritmes in oud-Griekse poëzie.

Concerten met klassieke muziek vormen vandaag inderdaad voor velen een oase van rust in de drukke wereld die ons omringt. Ons levensritme stijgt, zo tonen verschillende studies aan.

In West-Europese stadscentra wordt alsmaar sneller gewandeld. In vergelijking met een halve eeuw geleden, eten we en praten we ook sneller. Postbodes werken hun rondes in recordtempo af en in Hollywoodfilms wordt de lengte van individuele shots steeds korter. Instant communicatie met als gevolg het voortdurend oplichten, trillen of piepen van allerhande elektronische toestellen versnellen ons levensritme niet alleen, maar verstoren het ook vaak. In die context kan het ongelofelijk bevrijdend zijn om voor de duur van een concert alles even uit te schakelen en mee te gaan in een ritme dat vaak uit een heel andere tijd stamt.

Ritme is zo alomtegenwoordig – in onze hartslag, in onze manier van wandelen, in onze dagelijkse routine – dat we er zelden bij stil staan.

Is ritme iets fysiologisch, iets psychologisch of een combinatie van beide? Valt ritme los te koppelen van beweging? Vormt ritme de link tussen lichaam en ziel? Onder het motto ‘RHYTHM!’ stelt het Belgian National Orchestra het seizoen 20/21 volledig in het teken van deze vragen.

Op het programma staan vele composities waarin slagwerk – een bij uitstek 20ste-eeuws instrument – een prominente rol speelt. Naast Mahlers Vierde en Zesde symfonie (waarin een reusachtige hamer tot inzet komt) en Stravinsky’s Symfonieën voor blazers, komen Bartóks Concerto voor orkest en zijn Muziek voor strijkers, percussie en celesta aan bod. Veel aandacht gaat ook naar werken die door ritmes uit volks- en jazztradities zijn geïnspireerd. Dvořáks Zesde symfonie, en Gerschwins Pianoconcerto zijn hiervan voorbeelden. Ook de Russische muziek is goed vertegenwoordigd: naast de vioolconcerti van Tchaikovsky en Khachaturian, worden alle pianoconcerti van Rachmaninoff uitgevoerd en staat ook de hondsbrutaal geïnstrumenteerde Derde Symfonie van Prokofiev op het programma.

Van een heel ander karakter is de compositie Fairytale Poem van de Russisch-Tataarse componiste Sofia Gubaidulina. Na de val van de Sovjet-Unie verhuisde zij naar een klein dorp in Duitsland om daar radicaal haar eigen levensritme te kunnen volgen.

FR —› « Bien avant qu’il y eût des philosophes, on accordait à la musique la force de décharger les passions, de purifier l’âme, d’adoucir la ferocia animi (la colère de l’âme) – et justement parce qu’il y a de rythmique dans la musique. » Cette citation est de Friedrich Nietzsche, un penseur qui dans son travail de philologue s’est aussi consacré à l’étude du rythme de la poésie de la Grèce antique.

Et de fait, les concerts de musique classique sont aujourd’hui pour beaucoup une oasis de tranquillité propice à une pause loin de l’agitation du monde qui nous entoure.

Différentes études montrent que nous vivons à un rythme toujours plus trépidant. Dans les centresvilles d’Europe occidentale, le rythme des pas ne cesse de s’accélérer. Nous parlons et mangeons aussi beaucoup plus vite qu’il y a une cinquantaine d’années. Les facteurs bouclent leur tournée en un temps record et dans les films hollywoodiens, les plans de plus en plus courts se succèdent. Non contente d’accélérer notre rythme de vie, la communication en temps réel – avec son lot de lumières vives, clignotements, vibrations et bips incessants produits par toute une série d’appareils électroniques – nous dérange aussi bien souvent. Dans un tel contexte, « décrocher » le temps d’un concert et suivre un rythme insufflé souvent par une toute autre époque peut être incroyablement libérateur.

Le rythme est à ce point omniprésent – qu’il s’agisse de nos pulsations cardiaques, de notre façon de marcher, de notre quotidien – que nous lui prêtons rarement attention. Le rythme est-il physiologique, est-il de nature psychologique ou les deux à la fois ?

Peut-on dissocier le rythme du mouvement ? Le rythme fait-il le lien entre le corps et l’esprit ? Au Belgian National Orchestra, la saison 20/21 sera entièrement dédiée à ces questions, avec le slogan « RHYTHM! ».

Dans de nombreuses pièces et œuvres au programme de cette nouvelle saison, les instruments de percussion – particulièrement représentatifs du 20e siècle – sont à l’avant-plan. Outre la Symphonie n° 4 et la Symphonie n°6 (où de puissants coups de marteau se font entendre) de Mahler et les Symphonies d’instruments à vent de Stravinsky, nous vous proposons le Concerto pour orchestre de Bartók et sa Musique pour cordes, percussion et célesta. Notre programme fera également la part belle aux œuvres inspirées par les rythmes de la musique populaire et du jazz, avec notamment la Symphonie n°6 de Dvorak, et le Concerto pour piano de Gershwin. La musique russe est également à l’honneur, avec les concertos pour violon de Tchaikovsky et de Khachaturian et l’intégralité des concertos pour piano de Rachmaninoff, mais aussi la Symphonie n°3 de Prokofiev, à l’instrumentation particulièrement brutale. Dans un tout autre registre, nous vous proposerons aussi le Fairytale Poem de Sofia Gubaidulina. A la chute de l’Union soviétique, la compositrice russe aux origines tatares s’installa dans un petit village d’Allemagne pour y vivre à son propre rythme et se consacrer à des expérimentations musicales radicales.

Je vous invite à découvrir cette saison, pour un grand écart entre le Messiah de Handel et la Laterna Magica de Saariaho.

Classical music concerts are indeed an oasis of peace for many in the busy world that surrounds us.

Our rhythms of lives are accelerating, as many studies demonstrate.

The speed at which people walk through the city centres of Western Europe is increasing. We speak and eat more quickly compared to fifty years ago. Postal workers complete their rounds in record speeds and individual shots in Hollywood films are becoming ever shorter.

Instant communication, does not only accelerate our life rhythm, it often disrupts it too. In that context, it can be incredibly liberating to switch everything off for the duration of a concert and follow a rhythm that often originates from an entirely different time.

Rhythm is so omnipresent - in our heartbeat, the way we walk, our daily routines - that we rarely stop to think about it. Is rhythm a physiological phenomenon, a psychological one or a combination of the two? Can we disconnect rhythm from movement? Does rhythm form the link between body and soul? Under the motto ‘RHYTHM!’, the Belgian National Orchestra will explore these questions throughout the ‘20/’21 season.

The programme includes many compositions in which percussion - a pre-eminently 20th century instrument - plays a prominent role.

In addition to Mahler’s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies (in which a giant hammer comes into play) and Stravinsky’s Symphonies for Wind Instruments, Bartók’s Concerto for orchestra and his Music for strings, percussion and celesta are also on the programme. There is also plenty of room for works inspired by rhythms from the folk and jazz traditions. Examples include Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6, and Gershwin’s Piano Concerto. Russian music is also well represented: in addition to the violin concertos

by Tchaikovsky and Khachaturian, all of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos will be performed, as will the brazen instrumentation of Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3. Of a totally different character is the composition Fairytale Poem by the Russian-Tatar composer Sofia Gubaidulina. After the fall of the Soviet Union she moved to a small village in Germany to be able to radically follow her own rhythm of life.

NL —› Welkom voor het seizoen 2020-2021 van het Belgian National Orchestra. Muziek bezit niet alleen het mysterieuze vermogen om ons emotioneel te beroeren, maar slaagt er ook in ons lichaam in beweging krijgen. Dit jaar verkennen we deze verbluffende kracht: van de volksdansritmes van Falla, Tchaikovsky en Dvořák tot het tapdansen van Gershwin en de stuwende kracht van Beethoven, Berlioz, Schumann en Shostakovich. De complexe ritmes van Bartók komen aan bod in twee van zijn orkestwerken: zijn meesterlijke Concerto voor orkest opent het seizoen. Daarna volgt Muziek voor snaarinstrumenten, slagwerk en celesta. Ik sta alvast te popelen om twee symfonieën van Mahler te dirigeren: zijn Zesde symfonie in samenwerking met het Symfonieorkest van de Munt, en zijn Vierde symfonie, bijgestaan door de Belgische sopraan Lore Binon. We mogen ook weer tal van gerenommeerde gastartiesten verwelkomen, onder wie Emanuel Ax, Christian Tetzlaff, Truls Mørk, Thomas Hampson, Gil Shaham en de laureaten van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd voor viool, Sergey Khachatryan, Baiba Skride en Timothy Chooi. Cette année, nous explorons cette force incroyable : des rythmes de danse folklorique de Falla, Tchaikovsky et Dvořák aux claquettes de Gershwin et à la force motrice de Beethoven, Berlioz, Schumann et Shostakovich. Nous braquerons les projecteurs sur les rythmes complexes de Bartók à travers deux de ses œuvres pour orchestre : son sublime Concerto pour orchestre ouvrira la saison, suivi par Musique pour cordes, percussion et célesta.

EN —› Welcome to the 2020-2021 season of the Belgian National Orchestra. Beyond its mysterious power to move us emotionally, music has the power to get our bodies to move. This year we explore that amazing power: from the folk-dance rhythms of Falla, Tchaikovsky, and Dvořák, to the tap-dancing of Gershwin, to the driving force of Beethoven, Berlioz, Schumann and Shostakovich.

There will be a focus on the complex rhythms of Bartók with two of his orchestral works – his masterpiece Concerto for Orchestra will open the season, followed by Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta. I am excited to lead two Mahler symphonies: the Sixth in collaboration with the Orchestre de la Monnaie and the Fourth with Belgian soprano Lore Binon.

Among the many distinguished guests artists we proudly present are Emanuel Ax, Christian Tetzlaff, Truls Mørk, Thomas Hampson, Gil Shaham, and Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition laureates Sergey Khachatryan, Baiba Skride and Timothy Chooi. I invite you to join us for a season of dynamic music, amazing soloists and conductors, and irresistible rhythms!

The Belgian National Orchestra in permanent residence at BOZAR NL —› In zijn zoektocht wil het Belgian National Orchestra individuen en de maatschappij samenbrengen en verzoenen. Dat streven naar verenigen is ons DNA en onze leidraad sinds de start in 1936. Het toen net geopende Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussel werd de thuisbasis. Kan een orkest of muzikant zich een betere entourage indenken dan de indrukwekkende Henri Le Boeuf-zaal in deze iconische art-decotempel? De onevenaarbare akoestiek heeft voor solisten met wereldfaam een onweerstaanbare lokroep. Deze locatie brengt ons uiteraard ook dichter bij onze partner BOZAR. De missie van het Belgian National Orchestra uit zich ook in de samenwerking met tal van partners.

Samen geven we veelbelovend talent alle kansen om zich te ontbolsteren. Brussel is daarvoor de ideale smeltkroes. Als kruispunt van culturen en Europese hoofdstad stimuleren we de chemie door vernieuwing en experiment.

Dat vraagt uiteraard om een dynamische omgeving. Onze muzikanten kijken nu al uit naar de nieuwe ultramoderne repetitiezaal. Een meesterwerk in wording met een sublieme akoestiek en een riante oppervlakte, wat de zaal tot een uitstekende ruimte maakt voor concerten, conferenties en evenementen.

Cette volonté d’unir, inscrite dans notre ADN, est notre principe directeur depuis sa création en 1936. Le Palais des BeauxArts de Bruxelles, qui venait alors d’ouvrir ses portes, en est devenu le siège. Un orchestre ou un musicien peut-il imaginer plus beau cadre que l’impressionnante salle Henry Le Bœuf de ce temple Art déco emblématique ? Son acoustique sans égale attire irrésistiblement les solistes de renommée mondiale. Cette localisation nous rapproche naturellement aussi de notre partenaire BOZAR. NL —› Zijn Vioolconcerto schreef Tchaikovsky in een Zwitsers resort aan het meer van Genève.

Daar herstelde hij van de depressies en zenuwinzinkingen die zijn ongelukkige huwelijk met een jonge conservatoriumstudente – en zijn onderdrukte homoseksualiteit – hadden veroorzaakt. Tchaikovsky componeerde de partituur in recordtempo, geïnspireerd door de charmante aanwezigheid van Josif Kotek. Deze 22-jarige vioolen compositiestudent adviseerde hem over de technische aspecten van het vioolspel. Tchaikovsky overwoog het vioolconcerto aan Kotek op te dragen, maar zag hiervan af, zich al te zeer bewust van de roddels die dit zou veroorzaken.

FR —› Tchaikovsky composa son Concerto pour violon dans un hôtel donnant sur le lac de Genève en Suisse, où il se remettait des dépressions et des crises de nerfs provoquées par son mariage malheureux avec une jeune étudiante du conservatoire – et par son homosexualité réprimée. Tchaikovsky composa la partition en un temps record, inspiré par la présence charmante de Josif Kotek, un étudiant en violon et en composition de 22 ans qui le conseillait en techniques violonistiques. Tchaikovsky envisagea de lui dédier le concerto pour violon, mais changea d’avis pour éviter les rumeurs que cette dédicace aurait déclenchées.

Toen Béla Bartók aan het einde van zijn leven op de vlucht voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Amerika terechtkwam, speelden ziekte en geldgebrek hem een tijdlang parten. In 1943 verbeterde zijn situatie toen hij een opdracht kreeg voor een orkestcompositie. Het daaruit resulterende Concerto voor orkest is misschien wel zijn bekendste en meest toegankelijke werk. De paradoxale titel van deze vijfdelige compositie laat zich verklaren door de solistische en virtuoze wijze waarop Bartók de verschillende instrumentsecties behandelt. Een bijzonder grote rol is daarbij weggelegd voor het slagwerk. West-Europese klassieke en Oost-Europese volksmuziek vloeien in het Concerto voor orkest samen tot een allesomvattende compositie die op het einde bruist van de herwonnen levensvreugde.

Lorsque Béla Bartók, à la fin de sa vie, arriva en Amérique après avoir fui la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, il fut touché un certain temps par la maladie et la pauvreté. Sa situation s’améliora en 1943 lorsqu’il reçut une commande pour une œuvre orchestrale. Le résultat, son Concerto pour orchestre, est sans doute son œuvre la plus connue et la plus accessible. Le titre paradoxal de cette composition en cinq parties s’explique par l’approche soliste et virtuose avec laquelle Bartók traite les différentes sections instrumentales. Il confère aux percussions un rôle particulièrement important. Le Concerto pour orchestre allie la musique classique de l’Europe occidentale à la musique populaire de l’Europe orientale pour livrer une composition complète dont la partie finale pétille de joie de vivre retrouvée.

OPENING CONCERT EN —› Tchaikovsky wrote his Violin Concerto at a lakeside resort in Geneva, Switzerland. He was recovering there from the depression and nervous breakdowns caused by his unhappy marriage to a young conservatory student as well as his suppressed homosexuality. Tchaikovsky composed the score in record time, inspired by the charming presence of Josif Kotek. This 22-year-old violin and composition student advised him on the technical aspects of violin playing. Tchaikovsky considered dedicating the violin concerto to Kotek but decided against it, being all too aware of the rumours that this would cause.

When, at the end of his life, Béla Bartók arrived in America to escape the Second World War, he was plagued by illness and poverty for some time. His situation improved in 1943 when he was commissioned for an orchestral composition. The resulting Concerto for Orchestra is perhaps his best-known and most accessible work. The paradoxical title of this composition in five parts can be explained by the soloistic and virtuoso way in which Bartók treats the various instrument sections.

The percussion section plays a particularly significant role. In the Concerto for Orchestra, Western-European classical and Eastern-European folk music intertwine into an all-encompassing composition that ultimately sparkles with a renewed joie de vivre.

SYMFONISCHE KAMERMUZIEK NL —› De Zwitserse componist Richard Dubugnon – een rijzende ster in de wereld van de hedendaagse klassieke muziek – wordt soms ‘de zoon van Ravel en Prokofjev’ genoemd. Franse en Russische invloeden vloeien samen in zijn lyrische stijl en kleurrijke orkestraties.

Dubugnons Eerste kamersymfonie ging in 2013 in het Zwitserse Lausanne in première en is nu voor het eerst in België te horen.

Minstens even intiem klinkt Robert Schumanns Celloconcerto, dat al te grote virtuositeit schuwt en volop inzet op warme lyriek. Robert Schumann koesterde een bijzondere affiniteit voor de cello en begon het instrument zelf te bespelen nadat hij door een blessure aan zijn rechterhand de piano noodgedwongen moest opgeven.

Maurice Ravel componeerde de Pavane pour une infante défunte in een tijd waarin men nostalgisch terugkeek naar het Spanje van de 16de eeuw. De term ‘infant’ werd toen gebruikt om te verwijzen naar kinderen van Spaanse monarchen en duikt onder andere op in titels van schilderijen van Velázquez. Ravel componeerde zijn Pavane oorspronkelijk voor de piano, maar orkestreerde dit kleine en ontroerende werkje later ook voor groot orkest.

In een seizoen met als titel ‘RHYTHM!’ mag Joseph Haydns zogenaamde Roffelsymfonie niet ontbreken. Na ontslagen te zijn aan het hof van de Esterházy’s, ondernam Haydn aan het einde van zijn leven als vrije kunstenaar enkele concertreizen naar Londen. Deze resulteerden in twaalf Londense symfonieën, waarvan de Roffelsymfonie – die begint met een lange paukenroffel – de voorlaatste was.

SYMPHONIC CHAMBER MUSIC EN —› The Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon – a rising star in the world of contemporary classical music - is sometimes referred to as ‘the son of Ravel and Prokofiev’. His lyrical style and colourful orchestrations bring together French and Russian influences.

Dubugnon’s Chamber Symphony No.1 premiered in 2013 in Lausanne Switzerland, and is now to be heard in Belgium for the first time.

Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, is equally if not more intimate, shunning great virtuosity in favour of a warm lyricism. Robert Schumann had a particular affinity with the cello and began to play the instrument himself after a righthand injury forced him to give up the piano.

MUSIQUE DE CHAMBRE SYMPHONIQUE FR —› On appelle parfois le compositeur suisse Richard Dubugnon – une étoile montante au firmament de la musique classique contemporaine – le « fils de Ravel et Prokofiev ». Les influences françaises et russes se mêlent dans son style lyrique et ses orchestrations hautes en couleurs. La première Symphonie de chambre de Dubugnon a été créée en 2013 à Lausanne en Suisse et sera présentée pour la première fois en Belgique.

On retrouve la même atmosphère intime dans le Concerto pour violoncelle de Robert Schumann, qui rejette une trop grande virtuosité au profit d’un lyrisme chaleureux.

Robert Schumann aimait tout particulièrement le violoncelle et apprit lui-même à en jouer après avoir été forcé d’abandonner le piano suite à une blessure à la main droite.

Maurice Ravel composa la Pavane pour une infante défunte à une époque à laquelle on regardait l’Espagne du 16 e siècle avec nostalgie. Le terme « infante » était alors utilisé pour faire référence aux enfants des monarques espagnols. On le retrouve notamment aussi dans les titres des tableaux de Velázquez. Ravel composa d’abord sa Pavane pour piano, mais arrangea ensuite cette petite œuvre touchante pour grand orchestre.

Ravel originally composed his Pavane for piano, but later orchestrated this short, moving piece for a large orchestra.

A season bearing the title of ‘RHYTHM!’ cannot overlook Joseph Haydn’s so-called Drumroll Symphony. After being dismissed from the Esterházy’s court, Haydn, as a free artist at the end of his life, undertook some concert journeys to London. This resulted in twelve London symphonies, of which the Drumroll - which opens with a long tympani roll - was the penultimate.

Une saison baptisée « RHYTHM! » ne serait pas digne de ce nom si elle n’incluait pas la Symphonie des timbales de Joseph Haydn.

Après avoir été remercié à la cour des Esterházy, Haydn entreprit, à la fin de sa vie, quelques voyages musicaux à Londres en tant qu’artiste indépendant. Il en résultat les douze symphonies londoniennes, dont celle-ci – qui débute par un long roulement de timbales – est l’avant-dernière.

Cependant, lorsque celui-ci s’est fait sacrer empereur quelques années plus tard, Beethoven, déçu et furieux, a déchiré la page de titre de sa symphonie. Finalement, il a fait publier l’œuvre avec pour soustitre : « Sinfonia eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand’uomo » (Symphonie héroïque, composée pour célébrer le souvenir d’un grand homme).

DUITSE ROMANTIEK NL —› Friedrich Rückert was een Duits taalgenie. Hij kon zich vlot uitdrukken in meer dan 40 verschillende talen en was daarnaast ook de meest gelezen dichter van zijn tijd. Vandaag kennen we hem vooral als auteur van de Kindertotenlieder die door Gustav Mahler op muziek werden gezet. Naast de Kindertotenlieder vertoonde Mahler echter ook nog vijf andere gedichten van Friedrich Rückert: de Rückert-Lieder. Thomas Hampson, die deze losse cyclus van min of meer zelfstandige liederen ooit opnam met de Wiener Philharmoniker onder leiding van Leonard Bernstein, is hiervoor de gedroomde vertolker.

Beethovens Derde Symfonie vormt het scharnierpunt tussen twee belangrijke periodes in de muziekgeschiedenis: het classicisme en de romantiek. Met haar 50 minuten is ze maar liefst dubbel zo lang als de symfonieën van Mozart en Haydn.

De Derde Symfonie is echter niet alleen omwille van haar vorm, maar vooral ook omwille van haar inhoud revolutionair. Enerzijds rechtte Beethoven na een zware persoonlijke crisis, teweeggebracht door zijn alsmaar toenemende doofheid, met deze symfonie – een overwinning van de geest op het lichaam – terug zijn rug. Anderzijds drukte hij in dit werk zijn bewondering uit voor Napoleon Bonaparte die zich aan het begin van de 19de eeuw opwierp als belichamer van de democratische en anti-monarchistische idealen van de Franse revolutie. Wanneer Napoleon zich echter een paar jaar later tot keizer liet kronen, verscheurde Beethoven in een vlaag van teleurstelling en

woede het titelblad van zijn symfonie. Uiteindelijk liet hij het werk publiceren met als ondertitel “Sinfonia eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand’uomo” (heroïsche symfonie, gecomponeerd om het aandenken van een groot man te vieren).

LE ROMANTISME ALLEMAND FR —› Poète le plus célèbre de son temps, Friedrich Rückert était un génie allemand des langues, capable de s’exprimer avec fluidité dans plus de 40 langues différentes.

Aujourd’hui, nous le connaissons surtout comme l’auteur des Kindertotenlieder mis en musique par Gustav Mahler. Mahler fit de même avec cinq autres poèmes de Friedrich Rückert : les Rückert-Lieder.

Thomas Hampson, qui a signé un enregistrement de ce cycle de cinq lieder plus ou moins autonomes avec le Wiener Philharmoniker sous la direction de Leonard Bernstein, en est l’interprète idéal.

La Troisième symphonie de Beethoven est une œuvre charnière qui fait le lien entre deux grandes périodes de l’histoire de la musique : le classicisme et le romantisme. Today, he is best known as the author of the Kindertotenlieder set to music by Gustav Mahler. In addition to the Kindertotenlieder, Mahler also put 5 other poems

Beethoven’s Third Symphony marks the pivotal point between two important periods of music history: classicissism and romanticism.

But when Napoleon crowned himself emperor a few years later, Beethoven tore up the title page of his Symphony in a fit of rage and anger. NL —› De gevierde Finse componiste Kaija Saariaho speelt in haar compositie Laterna Magica met verschillende tempi die elk verschillende parameters belichten.

Snelle tempi benadrukken ritmische continuïteit, terwijl trage tempi de aandacht vestigen op specifieke klankkleuren. Symbool voor dit proces staat de laterna magica: een toestel dat in staat was om bewegende beelden te projecteren. Naarmate je sneller aan de hendel draait, maken individuele beelden plaats voor een continue beweging. Kaija Saariaho componeerde Laterna Magica tijdens het lezen van de gelijknamige autobiografie van de Zweedse filmregisseur Ingmar Bergman. De woorden die de orkestleden fluisteren, zijn de termen waarmee Ingmar Bergman het licht in zijn films beschrijft.

Fast tempi emphasise rhythmical continuity while slow tempi focus the attention on specific timbres. The symbol of this process is the laterna magica: a device that could project moving images. The faster you turn the handle, the more the individual images give way to continuous movement. Kaija Saariaho composed Laterna Magica while reading the similarly titled autobiography of the Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman. The words whispered by the members of the orchestra are the terms Ingmar Bergman used to describe light in his films.

Het Concerto in c voor piano, trompet en strijkers van de jonge Shostakovich is een vrolijk dubbelconcerto in neobarokke stijl waarbij de trompet een even belangrijke rol toegewezen krijgt als de piano. Nog onbezwaard door zijn latere aanvaringen met het Sovjetregime, laat Shostakovich de trompet de piano steeds weer op spottende wijze interrumperen.

Le Concerto en do mineur pour piano, trompette et cordes du jeune Shostakovich est un double concerto joyeux de style néobaroque, accordant à la trompette et au piano un rôle de même importance. Jouissant encore d’une liberté qui sera plus tard réfrénée par ses conflits avec le régime soviétique, Shostakovich y laisse la trompette interrompre le piano à de multiples reprises et avec beaucoup d’ironie.

“Onbegrijpelijk dat deze Fransman, die Spanje slechts eenmaal bezocht, op zo’n meesterlijke wijze de Spaanse folklore heeft weten te etaleren”, schreef de Spaanse componist Manuel de Falla.

Un quart de siècle plus tôt, Claude Debussy signait Images pour orchestre. La deuxième partie de cette œuvre en trois sections, intitulée Iberia, est sans aucun doute la plus célèbre. Debussy, captivé par un combat de taureaux auquel il avait assisté, y dépeint un portrait musical absolument saisissant de l’Espagne. « Il est incompréhensible que ce Français, qui n’a visité l’Espagne qu’une seule fois, ait été capable d’exposer le folklore espagnol avec autant de maîtrise », écrivit le compositeur espagnol Manuel de Falla.

The young Shostakovich’s Concerto in c Minor for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra is a cheerful double concerto in the Neo-Baroque style in which the trumpet is of equal importance to the piano.

Not yet encumbered by his later clashes with the Soviet regime, Shostakovich allows the trumpet to interrupt the piano mockingly over and over again.

A quarter of a century earlier, Claude Debussy wrote his Images pour orchestre. The second part of this work in three parts, entitled Iberia, is indubitably the best-known. Debussy, inspired by watching a bullfight, paints an extremely effective musical portrait of Spain. “It is incomprehensible that this Frenchman, who only visited Spain on one occasion, was able to portray Spanish folklore in such a masterful way”, wrote the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla.

DE MELODIE ALS ZIEL VAN DE MUZIEK NL —› Sergey Khachatryan, winnaar van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd 2005, keert terug naar België voor een uitvoering van het overbekende Eerste vioolconcerto van Max Bruch. Deze componist-dirigent was een bewonderaar van Mendelssohn en werd een goede vriend van Brahms. Zijn Eerste Vioolconcerto componeerde Bruch op vrij jonge leeftijd, net na het voltooien van de opera Die Loreley. De compositie was echter een zware bevalling. Bruch was uiterst ontevreden met de eerste uitvoering, trok de partituur terug en stuurde ze naar Joseph Joachim, de beroemdste violist van zijn tijd. Op basis van Joseph Joachims suggesties wijzigde Bruch het concerto ingrijpend. In 1868 ging de finale versie van het Eerste Vioolconcerto in première, deze keer met Joseph Joachim als solist. Hoewel Bruch later nog een Tweede en een Derde Vioolconcerto componeerde, blijft zijn Eerste Vioolconcerto tot op de dag van vandaag zijn meest opgevoerde werk.

Een even grote melodische kwaliteit is terug te vinden in de zogenaamde Grote symfonie in C, de laatste grote orkestcompositie van Franz Schubert. Dit werk werd tijdens het leven van de jong gestorven componist nooit opgevoerd en was zonder de tussenkomst van Robert Schumann waarschijnlijk verloren gegaan.

Schubert om de partituur op te sturen naar Leipzig, waar Mendelssohn in 1839 de première dirigeerde. Schuberts Grote symfonie in C duurt bijna even lang als Beethovens Negende symfonie en is even ambitieus van opzet.

Het scherzo en de finale behoren tot de meest rusteloze ritmische passages van de orkestliteratuur.

Eén motiefje – bestaande uit vier dezelfde noten – wordt obsessief herhaald voordat een stralende cadens in do groot de symfonie triomfantelijk afsluit.

LA MÉLODIE COMME ÂME DE LA MUSIQUE FR —› Sergey Khachatryan, lauréat du Concours Reine Élisabeth 2005, revient en Belgique pour interpréter le très célèbre Premier concerto pour violon de Max Bruch. Ce compositeur et chef d’orchestre était un admirateur de Mendelssohn et un bon ami de Brahms. Bruch a composé son Premier concerto pour violon alors qu’il était assez jeune, après avoir achevé l’opéra Die Loreley. Son écriture s’est toutefois révélée un exercice laborieux. Très mécontent de la première exécution de l’œuvre, Bruch a récupéré la partition et l’a envoyée à Joseph Joachim, le plus célèbre violoniste de l’époque. La première de la version finale du Premier concerto pour violon a eu lieu en 1868, avec cette fois Joseph Joachim comme soliste. Bien que Bruch ait ensuite composé un Deuxième et un Troisième concerto pour violon, le Premier est aujourd’hui encore son œuvre la plus jouée.

On retrouve une qualité mélodique aussi élevée dans la fameuse Grande Symphonie en ut majeur, la dernière grande composition pour orchestre de Franz Schubert.

Cette œuvre n’a jamais été exécutée du vivant du compositeur – disparu précocement – et aurait sans doute été perdue sans l’intervention de Robert Schumann.

Ce dernier a convaincu le frère de Schubert d’envoyer la partition à Leipzig, où Mendelssohn en a dirigé la première en 1839. La Grande Symphonie en ut majeur de Schubert est presque aussi longue que la Neuvième Symphonie de Beethoven et tout aussi ambitieuse.

Le scherzo et le finale comptent

parmi les passages rythmiques les plus fébriles du répertoire pour orchestre. Un motif – composé des quatre mêmes notes – est répété obsessivement avant qu’une brillante cadence en ut majeur ne clôture la symphonie de manière triomphale.

THE MELODY AS THE SOUL OF MUSIC EN —› Sergey Khachatryan, winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2005, returns to Belgium for a performance of Max Bruch’s highly popular First Violin Concerto. This composer-conductor was an admirer of Mendelssohn’s work and a good friend of Brahms’. Bruch composed his First Violin Concerto at quite a young age, shortly after completing the opera Die Loreley. But the composition proved to be a laborious exercise.. Entirely dissatisfied with the first performance, Bruch withdrew the score and sent it to Joseph Joachim, the most famous violinist of his time.

On Joachim’s recommendations Bruch made drastic changes to the concerto. In 1868, the final version of the First Violin Concerto was premiered, this time with Joseph Joachim as soloist. Although Bruch later composed a Second and a Third Violin Concerto, his First Violin Concerto remains his most frequently performed work to this day.

An equally huge melodic quality is to be found in what is referred to as the Great Symphony in C Major, Franz Schubert’s last major orchestral composition. This work was never performed during the lifetime of the composer, who died at a young age, and would probably have been lost were it not for the intervention of Robert Schumann. He persuaded Franz Schubert’s brother to send the manuscript to Leipzig, where Mendelssohn conducted the premiere in 1839. Schubert’s Great Symphony in C Major is almost as long as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and is every bit as ambitious. The scherzo and the finale are among the most restless rhythmic passages in orchestral literature. One motif - consisting of four identical notes - is repeated obsessively before a radiant cadenza in C major brings the symphony to a triumphant end.

Requiem IN MEMORIAM NL —› Haydns Vierenveertigste symfonie, gecomponeerd aan het hof van de Hongaarse prins Nikolaus Esterházy, kreeg de bijnaam Treursymfonie omdat Haydn het Adagio (in deze symfonie de derde beweging) zo geslaagd vond dat hij wou dat dit stuk op zijn begrafenis zou worden gespeeld.

Bij Haydns dood in 1809 werd die wens echter niet gerespecteerd: in de plaats daarvan weerklonk het Requiem van Mozart.

Mozarts laatste compositie, baadt in een mysterieuze sfeer. Een grauwe bode die eruitzag alsof hij van een andere wereld kwam, zou de opdracht hebben gegeven om een requiem te componeren. Mozart werkte dag en nacht aan deze compositie, maar stierf voor hij het werk kon voltooien… Andere componisten, voornamelijk studenten van Mozart, werkten het requiem af in opdracht van Mozarts vrouw.

Zij wou het voorschot van de bode (in werkelijkheid iemand die werkte voor de excentrieke graaf Frans von Walsegg) begrijpelijkerwijze niet teruggeven en ook de rest van het beloofde geld niet mislopen. Mede door het succes van de film Amadeus, die zich eerder op Pushkins tragedie Mozart en Salieri dan op historisch feitenmateriaal baseert, is het Requiem van Mozart vandaag een van zijn meest gekende en geliefde composities.

FR —› La Quarante-quatrième Symphonie de Haydn, composée à la cour du prince hongrois Nikolaus Esterházy, a été surnommée « Funèbre » parce que Haydn trouvait l’Adagio (le troisième mouvement) si réussi qu’il avait exprimé le désir qu’il soit joué le jour de son enterrement. En 1809, à son décès, ce fut pourtant le Requiem de Mozart qui résonna dans l’église.

EN —› Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, composed at the court of the Hungarian prince Esterházy, was nicknamed Mourning because Haydn felt the Adagio (the third movement in this symphony) was so successful that he wanted it played at his own funeral. However, his wish was not respected upon his death in 1809: instead, Mozart’s Requiem was played.

L’ultime composition de Mozart baigne dans une ambiance mystérieuse. Un sombre messager semblant venir d’un autre monde lui aurait commandé un requiem.

Mozart y travailla jour et nuit mais mourut avant de terminer l’œuvre…

D’autres compositeurs, pour la plupart des élèves de Mozart, le firent sur ordre de sa femme. Elle ne voulait manifestement ni se voir obligée de rembourser l’avance donnée par le messager (qui travaillait, en vérité, pour le comte excentrique Frans von Walsegg), ni passer à côté du reste de la somme promise. C’est en partie grâce au succès du film Amadeus, plutôt basé sur la tragédie Mozart et Salieri de Pushkin que sur des faits historiques réels, que le Requiem de Mozart est aujourd’hui l’une de ses œuvres les plus connues et les plus appréciées.

A mysterious atmosphere surrounds Mozart’s final composition.

A grey messenger, seemingly from another world, apparently ordered him to compose a requiem. Mozart worked day and night on this composition but died before he was able to finalize it. Other composers, primarily students of Mozart, were charged with completing the requiem by Mozart’s wife. Understandably, she did not want to return the deposit of the messenger (in reality someone who worked for the eccentric count Frans von Walsegg) and did not want to miss out on the rest of the promised money either.

Partly due to the success of the film Amadeus, which is based on Pushkin’s tragedy Mozart and Salieri rather than on historical factual material, Mozart’s Requiem is today one of his most well-known and beloved compositions.

& Beethoven Een langzame kwikvergiftiging was vermoedelijk de oorzaak van Robert Schumanns psychische problemen (kleine porties kwik werden in de 19de eeuw voorgeschreven als remedie tegen syfilis). Depressief, nerveus en lijdend aan geheugenverlies, begon Schumann aan zijn Tweede symfonie.

Net zoals Beethovens late werken een overwinning van de rede op de meest beproevende omstandigheden symboliseren (zijn doofheid), kan men in Schumanns Tweede symfonie het verhaal lezen van een trotse strijd met duistere machten (eerste beweging) die na rusteloosheid (tweede beweging) en diepe melancholie (derde beweging) uitmondt in een triomfantelijke overwinning (finale).

QUAND LA RAISON L’EMPORTE

OVERWINNING VAN DE REDE NL —› Met geen ander genre had Beethoven een zo problematische verhouding als met het operagenre. Het kostte hem meer tijd om de ouverture te componeren tot zijn enigste opera Fidelio, dan Rossini en Donizetti nodig hadden om een volledige opera te componeren. In totaal zijn er maar liefst vier versies overgeleverd. De compositie die vandaag bekend staat als de Eerste Leonore ouverture (vernoemd naar het vrouwelijke hoofdpersonage Leonore die zich voor de man Fidelio uitgeeft om haar echtgenoot uit de gevangenis te redden) was Beethovens derde poging en functioneert het beste als losstaand concertwerk.

In opdracht van het Belgian National Orchestra componeert de Belgische componist Jean-Paul Dessy hierop een antwoord.

FR —› De tous les genres, c’est avec l’opéra que Beethoven eut la relation la plus problématique. Il prit plus de temps pour composer l’ouverture de son seul opéra Fidelio que Rossini et Donizetti pour en composer un entier. Au total, quatre versions nous sont parvenues. La pièce connue aujourd’hui comme la Première Ouverture Léonore (qui doit son nom à l’héroïne Léonore qui se fait passer pour Fidelio pour sortir son mari de prison) était la troisième tentative de Beethoven et fonctionne admirablement bien en tant qu’œuvre de concert autonome. Sur commande du Belgian National Orchestra, le compositeur belge Jean-Paul Dessy a composé une réponse à cette œuvre.

Une lente intoxication au mercure explique probablement pourquoi Robert Schumann souffrit de problèmes psychiques (de petites doses de mercure étaient prescrites au 19e siècle comme remède contre la syphilis). C’est donc dans un état dépressif, nerveux et souffrant de pertes de mémoire que Schumann commença sa Deuxième Symphonie. À l’instar des œuvres tardives de

Beethoven, qui symbolisent la victoire de la raison sur les circonstances les plus éprouvantes (sa surdité), on retrouve dans la Deuxième Symphonie de Schumann l’histoire d’un combat courageux contre les forces obscures (premier mouvement) qui, après l’agitation (deuxième mouvement) et la mélancolie profonde (troisième mouvement), se termine par une victoire triomphante (finale).

TRIUMPH OF REASON EN —› With no other genre did Beethoven have such a problematic relationship as with the opera genre. It took him longer to compose the overture for his one and only opera, Fidelio, than Rossini and Donizetti needed to compose a complete opera. A total of four versions have reached us.

The composition known today as the First Leonore overture (named after the female protagonist Leonore impersonating the man Fidelio to save her husband from prison) was Beethoven’s third attempt and functions best as a stand-alone concert work. The Belgian National Orchestra has commissioned Belgian composer Jean-Paul Dessy to compose a reply to it.

The probable cause of Schumann’s mental health problems was gradual mercury poisoning (in the 19th century, small doses of mercury were prescribed as a remedy for syphilis). Depressed, anxious and suffering from memory loss, Schumann started to work on his Symphony No. 2. Just as the late works of Beethoven symbolise the triumph of reason under the most challenging circumstances (his deafness), in Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 one can hear the story of a proud struggle against dark forces (the first movement) that, following restlessness (second movement) and deep melancholy (third movement), culminates in a triumphant victory (the finale).

Johannes Brahms Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major, op. 77 Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 3 in d minor 30

ANTIPODEN IN DE ABSOLUTE MUZIEK NL —› Brahms en Bruckner waren ongeveer even oud, woonden alle twee in Wenen en concentreerden zich beiden op het schrijven van absolute muziek. Onbedoeld werden ze elkaars tegenstaanders: Bruckner die als Nieuw-Duitse Wagneriaan doordrong in het door de traditionalisten geclaimde genre van de symfonie en Brahms die door zijn aanhangers werd vereerd als de enige legitieme opvolger van Beethoven. Dit concert verenigt het onverenigbare en plaatst Brahms Vioolconcerto naast Bruckners Derde symfonie.

Brahms Vioolconcerto is bijzonder symfonisch van opzet. De viool is er niet om de virtuositeit van haar bespeler te demonstreren, maar fungeert als ‘primus inter pares’ en neemt zo in belangrijke mate deel aan de ontwikkeling van de muzikale motieven. Alhoewel aanvankelijk onspeelbaar geacht (“dit is geen concerto voor de viool, maar tegen de viool” – Hans von Bülow), geniet Brahms Vioolconcerto vandaag een bijzondere plaats in het hart van heel wat solisten en dirigenten.

Bruckner droeg zijn Derde symfonie op aan Richard Wagner (“de onbereikbare, wereldberoemde en verheven meester van de dichten toonkunst”) nadat deze zich – weliswaar onder de invloed van heel wat bier – positief over de partituur had uitgelaten. Na een catastrofale première en heel wat revisies, zorgde de Derde symfonie uiteindelijk voor Bruckners artistieke doorbraak.

LES ANTIPODES DE LA MUSIQUE ABSOLUE FR —› Brahms et Bruckner avaient environ le même âge, vivaient à Vienne et se consacraient à la composition de musique absolue. Sans le vouloir, ils devinrent des adversaires : Bruckner – qui, en nouveau wagnérien allemand, s’imposa dans le genre symphonique cher aux traditionnalistes – et Brahms, reconnu par ses admirateurs comme le seul successeur légitime de Beethoven.

Ce concert allie l’inconciliable et place le Concerto pour violon de Brahms face à la Troisième Symphonie de Bruckner.

Le Concerto pour violon de Brahms relève d’une intention profondément symphonique. Le violon n’a pas pour objectif d’exhiber la virtuosité de son instrumentiste, mais sert de « primus inter pares » et prend ainsi largement part au développement des motifs musicaux. Bien qu’il ait d’abord été considéré comme injouable (« Ce n’est pas un concerto pour violon, mais contre lui » – Hans von Bülow), le Concerto pour violon de Brahms jouit aujourd’hui d’une place particulière dans le cœur de nombreux solistes et chefs d’orchestre.

OPPOSITES IN ABSOLUTE MUSIC EN —› Brahms and Bruckner were approximately the same age, both lived in Vienna and both concentrated on writing absolute music.

Inadvertently they became opponents: Bruckner, as a New-German Wagnerian, penetrated the symphonic genre claimed by traditionalists while Brahms was acclaimed by his followers as the only legitimate heir to Beethoven.

This concert unites the incompatible, placing Brahms’ Violin Concerto alongside Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3.

Brahms’ Violin Concerto is particularly symphonic. The violin is not intended to demonstrate the virtuosic ability of its player but functions as ‘primus inter pares’ and plays a significant part in the development of the musical motifs.

Although it was originally considered unplayable (“this is not a concerto for the violin but against the violin” – Hans von Bülow), Brahms’ Violin Concerto has a special place in the heart of many soloists and conductors today.

Bruckner dedicated his Symphony No. 3 to Richard Wagner (“the unreachable, world-famous and noble master of poetry and music”) after the latter had spoken positively about the score – albeit while under the influence of a large quantity of beer. Following a catastrophic premiere and many revisions, Symphony No. 3 was ultimately Bruckner’s artistic breakthrough.

Bruckner dédia sa Troisième Symphonie à Richard Wagner (« l’inaccessible, mondialement connu et illustre maître de l’art de la poésie et de la note ») après que ce dernier, certes sous l’influence d’un trop-plein de bière, ait eu des paroles encourageantes au sujet de la partition. Après une Première catastrophique et de nombreuses révisions, la Troisième Symphonie signa finalement la percée artistique de Bruckner.

BLAZERS EN SLAGWERK NL —› Dat Stravinsky bij de première van zijn Symfonie voor blazers door het Londense publiek werd uitgelachen, hoeft niet te verbazen. De korte compositie is geen symfonie, zoals de titel misschien laat vermoeden, maar bestaat uit samenklanken (Grieks: ‘symphonia’) die gegenereerd worden door 23 blaasinstrumenten. Een thematisch-motivische of een harmonische ontwikkeling ontbreekt. In de plaats daarvan zorgen drie verschillende tempi, die met elkaar in een 2:3:4-verhouding staan, voor eenheid.

In de jaren 1930 leende Bartók bij een instrumentenfabriek verschillende slagwerkinstrumenten uit en experimenteerde er duchtig op los. Toen de Zwitserse dirigent Paul Sacher hem vroeg een compositie te schrijven voor 30 strijkers en eventueel ook nog piano, klavecimbel of slagwerk, greep Bartók de kans met beide handen aan en componeerde zijn Muziek voor strijkers, percussie en celesta.

Voorgeschreven is dat de strijkers zich in twee groepen recht tegenover elkaar links en rechts van het

Steinbacher Dvořák podium bevinden. Het slagwerk, een xylofoon, een harp, een celesta en een piano staan daartussen opgesteld. Bartóks beroemd geworden compositie werd meermaals als filmmuziek gebruikt, onder andere in Being John Malkovich en in Stanley Kubricks The Shining.

Joseph Joachim, de violist aan wie zowel Brahms als Bruch hun vioolconcerti opdroegen, slaagde er ook in om de Tsjechische componist Antonín Dvořák te overtuigen een vioolconcerto te schrijven.

Wat opvalt bij Dvořák, is het ontbreken van een virtuoze cadens en een recapitulatie in het eerste deel, alsook de onmiddellijke overgang in het tweede deel (dat zo beroemd is dat het vaak als zelfstandig werk wordt opgevoerd).

Het tweede werk van Dvořák dat op het programma staat, Carnival, is een concertouverture die hij componeerde als tweede deel van een ouverture-trilogie rond de thematiek ‘Natuur, Leven en Liefde’.

Koperblazers en het slagwerk – in het bijzonder de tamboerijn – spelen in deze compositie een glansrol.

VENTS ET PERCUSSIONS FR —› Il n’est pas étonnant que les Symphonie pour instruments à vent de Stravinsky aient été la risée du public londonien lors de sa création. Cette composition courte n’est pas une symphonie, comme le suggère son titre, mais est composée d’harmonies (du grec « symphonia ») générées par 23 instruments à vent. La pièce ne présente aucun développement thématique, motivique ou harmonique. À la place, trois tempi différents, déterminés par un rapport 2:3:4, assurent l’unité de l’œuvre.

Dans les années 1930, Bartók emprunta plusieurs instruments de percussion à une usine et s’en donna à cœur joie. Lorsque le chef d’orchestre suisse Paul Sacher lui demanda d’écrire une composition pour 30 instruments à cordes et éventuellement un piano, un clavecin ou des percussions, Bartók saisit cette opportunité et composa sa Musique pour cordes, percussion et célesta. La partition indique que les cordes doivent être divisées en deux groupes placés l’un en face de l’autre, à gauche et à droite de la scène. WINDS AND PERCUSSIONS EN —› It should not come as a surprise that Stravinsky was mocked by his London audience at the premiere of his Symphonies for Winds Instruments. This short composition is not a symphony as the title might suggest, but consists of harmonies (Greek:‘symphonia’) generated by 23 wind instruments.

A thematically-motivated or a harmonic development is lacking.

Instead, three different tempi, in a 2:3:4 ratio, provide unity.

In the 1930s, Bartók borrowed various percussion instruments from an instrument factory and experimented enthusiastically with them. When the Swiss conductor Paul Sacher asked him to write a composition for thirty strings and possibly piano, harpsichord or percussion, Bartók seized the opportunity and composed his Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta.

The instructions include placing the strings in two groups straight across each other left and right of the stage. The percussion, a xylophone, a harp, a celesta and a piano are positioned in between.

Bartók’s composition, which became famous, was used several times as film music, including Being John Malkovich and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

Joseph Joachim, the violinist to whom both Brahms and Bruch dedicated their violin concertos, also managed to convince the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák to write a violin concerto. Striking in the case of Dvořák is the lack of a virtuoso cadenza and recapitulation in the first movement, as well as the immediate transition in the second movement (which is so famous that it is often performed as an independent work). Dvořák’s second work on the program, Carnival, is a concert overture that he composed as the second part of an overture trilogy on the theme of ‘Nature, Life and Love’. Brass and percussion instruments - the tambourine in particular - play a starring role in this composition.

MUZIKALE CROSS-OVERS NL —› El sombrero de tres picos (De driepuntige hoed) is een ballet van de Spaanse componist Manuel de Falla dat op initiatief van Sergej Diaghilev door de Ballets Russes in Londen werd opgevoerd in een decor en met kostuums van Pablo Picasso. De hoofdpersonages van het ballet zijn een molenaar, diens mooie vrouw en een hoogwaardigheidsbekleder die de molenaarsvrouw probeert te verleiden. Na de première distilleerde Manuel de Falla uit het ballet twee orkestrale suites die qua muzikale kwaliteit kunnen wedijveren met Stravinsky’s Petroesjka.

De Amerikaanse componist George Gershwin staat bekend om zijn fascinerende mix tussen jazz en vroeg 20ste-eeuwse klassieke muziek. Na het ongelofelijk succesvolle Rhapsody in Blue – zijn eerste serieuze compositie

– kreeg hij van het New York Philharmonic Orchestra de opdracht om een pianoconcert te schrijven.

Geheel in zijn eigen stijl, schreef Gershwin een concerto waarvan het eerste deel gestructureerd wordt door het typische ritme van de charleston, waarvan het tweede deel de invloed uitademt van de Amerikaanse blues en waarvan het derde deel bestaat uit een orgie aan wilde ritmes die de luisteraar geen seconde rust gunnen.

In de jaren 1880 werd Camille Saint-Saëns in Engeland geroemd als de grootste nog levende Franse componist. Op vraag van de Royal Philharmonic Society schreef hij zijn Derde symfonie. In deze compositie valt vooral het ingenieuze gebruik van toetsinstrumenten op: naast de piano (die zowel tweeals vierhandig wordt bespeeld) speelt ook het orgel een uitermate belangrijke rol. Camille Saint-Saëns droeg de Derde symfonie op aan zijn pas overleden vriend Franz Liszt en baseerde zijn muzikaal materiaal op de gregoriaanse melodie van het Dies irae, de sequens uit de dodenliturgie.

signés Pablo Picasso. Les personnages principaux du ballet sont un meunier, sa jolie femme et un haut dignitaire qui tente de la séduire.

Après la première, Manuel de Falla a distillé deux suites orchestrales à partir du ballet, dont la qualité musicale rivalise aisément avec Petrouchka de Stravinsky.

Le compositeur américain George Gershwin est connu pour son mélange fascinant des univers du jazz et de la musique classique du début du 20e siècle. Après le succès incroyable de Rhapsody in Blue – sa première composition sérieuse –, il reçut une commande du New York Philharmonic Orchestra pour écrire un concerto pour piano. The main characters of the ballet are a miller, his beautiful wife and a dignitary who attempts to seduce the miller’s wife. The American composer George Gershwin is renowned for his fascinating mix of jazz and early twentieth-century classical music. After the incredible success of Rhapsody in Blue – his first serious composition – the New York Philharmonic Orchestra commissioned him to write a piano concerto. In his entirely own style, Gershwin composed a concerto whose first part was structured by the characteristic rhythm of the Charleston, while the second exuded the influence of the American blues and whose third movement consisted of an orgy of wild rhythms that do not give the listener a second’s rest.

During the 1880s, Camille SaintSaëns was acclaimed in England as the greatest living French composer. He composed his Symphony No. 3 at the request of the Royal Philharmonic Society. Particularly striking in this composition is the ingenious use of keyboard instruments: in addition to the piano (which is played both two- and four-handedly) the organ plays an extremely important role.

Camille Saint-Saëns dedicated the Symphony No. 3 to his recently- deceased friend Franz Liszt and based his musical material on the Gregorian melody of the Dies Irae, the sequence of the requiem.

Dit jaar staan de opera’s van Mozart centraal, verteld aan kinderen.

Een originele manier om samen met het gezin de magische kerstperiode te beginnen.

Een papieren theater van de kunstenaar Lorenzo Papace, geprojecteerd op een groot scherm achter het orkest, illustreert de bekendste fragmenten uit de opera’s van Mozart: De toverfluit, Don Giovanni en Figaro’s bruiloft.

Cette année, ce sont des opéras de Mozart, racontés aux enfants, qui occuperont le devant de la scène. Une façon originale d’entrer ensemble en famille dans la période magique de Noël.

Naast ouvertures, walsen, polka’s en marsen van Johann Strauss Jr. worden er ook werken gespeeld van andere Oostenrijkse componisten zoals Erich Korngold (die naar Hollywood emigreerde en daar heel wat filmmuziek schreef) en Robert Stolz (die op vraag van zijn vriend Ralph Bunche, een Afro-Amerikaanse diplomaat en burgerrechtenactivist, een mars schreef voor de Verenigde Naties).

Het Belgian National Orchestra schittert ook met de kleurrijke orkestmuziek van Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. De handeling van deze opera speelt zich af in Wenen omstreeks 1740. Ofschoon de befaamde ‘Wiener Walz’ pas aan het begin van de 19de eeuw het levenslicht zag, gebruikte Richard Strauss in het tweede en derde bedrijf van Der Rosenkavalier heel wat walsmuziek. Critici waren hoogst ontevreden met dit anachronisme, maar het publiek kon Strauss’ muziek zozeer smaken dat de orkestrale hoogtepunten al snel werden gebundeld in een betoverende suite.

Le Belgian National Orchestra brillera également grâce à la musique orchestrale haute en couleurs de Richard Strauss, Le Chevalier à la rose. L’intrigue de cet opéra se déroule à Vienne autour de 1740. Si la célèbre « valse viennoise » ne vit le jour qu’au début du 19e siècle, Richard Strauss utilisa dans le deuxième et troisième acte du Chevalier à la rose beaucoup de musique de valse. Si les critiques étaient mécontents de cet anachronisme, le public apprécia quant à lui la musique de Strauss à tel point que les meilleurs moments orchestraux furent rapidement agencés en une suite envoûtante.

EN —› Swiss conductor Stefan Blunier, long-time principal conductor in the Beethoven City of Bonn and the first guest conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra since 2004, will start the new year with a thoroughly Viennese programme. In addition to overtures, waltzes, polkas and marches by Johann Strauss Jr. Works by other Viennese composers such as Erich Korngold (who emigrated to Hollywood and wrote a lot of film music there) and Robert Stolz (who wrote a march for the United Nations at the request of his friend Ralph Bunche, an Afro-American diplomat and civil rights activist).

The Belgian National Orchestra also shines with the colourful orchestral music of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. The act of this opera takes place in Vienna around 1740. Although the wellknown ‘Wiener Walz’ only saw the light of day at the beginning of the 19th century, Richard Strauss used a great deal of waltz music in the second and third movements of Der Rosenkavalier. Critics were highly dissatisfied with this anachronism, but the audience could taste Strauss’ music so much that the orchestral highlights were soon bundled into an enchanting suite.

Het concert kaart thema’s als ‘anders zijn’ aan via muziek, beeld en beweging. Na het concert vinden je kinderen klassieke muziek opgewekt, grappig of rumoerig, maar zeker niet saai!

Zijn Zesde symfonie componeerde Mahler in wat misschien wel de gelukkigste periode van zijn leven was. Toch klinkt dit werk, dat als bijnaam ‘De tragische’ kreeg, ontzettend duister. Velen, waaronder ook zijn vrouw Alma Mahler, dichtten deze compositie profetische kwaliteiten toe, zowel op persoonlijk als op geschiedkundig vlak. De dood van Mahlers oudste dochter, zijn ontslag als dirigent aan de Wiener Hofoper, de verontrustende diagnose van een hartklepinfectie, alsook de Eerste Wereldoorlog – zaken die allemaal voor de deur stonden – zijn inderdaad de tragische gebeurtenissen die passen bij het donkere karakter van de Zesde symfonie. Beroemd is vooral de vierde en laatste beweging waarbij een reusachtige hamer tot inzet komt om een fatale noodlotsslag te generen. Op de Achtste na, is de Zesde Mahlers grootst bezette symfonie: elke uitvoering van dit werk zorgt voor diep beklijvende, onvergetelijke momenten.

Mahler composa sa Sixième Symphonie au cours de ce qui était sans doute la période la plus heureuse de sa vie. Pourtant, cette œuvre, surnommée « La Tragique », est profondément sombre. Beaucoup, dont sa femme Alma Mahler, y voient une prophétie, tant au niveau personnel qu’historique.

La mort de sa fille aînée, sa démission à la tête de l’Opéra de la Cour de Vienne, le diagnostic inquiétant d’une infection de la valve mitrale, la Première Guerre mondiale : autant d’événements qui allaient se produire et dont la symphonie annonçait la couleur tragique. Le quatrième et dernier mouvement, avec ses coups de marteau géant qui signent l’arrivée fatale du destin, est le plus célèbre. À l’exception de la Huitième, la Sixième de Mahler est celle qui emploie le plus grand orchestre : chaque interprétation de cette œuvre apporte son lot de moments inoubliables et profondément captivants.

Mahler composed his Symphony No. 6 during what was probably the happiest period of his life. Even so, this work, nicknamed ‘Tragic’, is incredibly dark. Many, including his wife, Alma Mahler, attributed prophetic qualities to this composition both personally and historically. The death of Mahler’s eldest daughter, his resignation as conductor to the Wiener Hofoper, the disturbing diagnosis of a heart valve infection, as well as the First World War - all of which were looming - are indeed tragic events that suit the dark character of the Symphony No. 6. Especially famous is the fourth and last movement, in which a giant hammer is used to generate the deadly blows of fate. After No. 8, No. 6 is Mahler’s largest symphonic orchestration: each performance of this work provides deeply lasting, unforgettable moments.

NL —› Het wereldberoemde pianoduo Silver-Garburg liet de Oostenrijkse componist Richard Dünser een nieuw arrangement schrijven van Johannes Brahms’ Eerste pianokwartet. Oorspronkelijk geschreven voor piano, viool, altviool en cello, weerklinkt deze compositie nu in een versie voor piano vier handen en strijkorkest. Brahms’ Eerste pianokwartet – bestaande uit de obligate vier delen - is stevig geworteld in de Oostenrijks-Duitse romantische muziektraditie. Het laatste deel, een zigeunersrondo die even opzwepend is als Brahms’ Hongaarse dansen, is echter zo inventief opgebouwd dat Arnold Schönberg het een van zijn lievelingsstukken noemde.

FR —› Le duo de pianistes de renommée internationale Silver-Garburg a commandé au compositeur autrichien Richard Dünser un nouvel arrangement du Premier Quatuor avec piano de Johannes Brahms. Écrite à l’origine pour piano, violon, alto et violoncelle, cette œuvre résonne aujourd’hui dans une version pour piano à quatre mains et orchestre à cordes. Le Premier Quatuor avec piano de Brahms – constitué des quatre mouvements traditionnels – est profondément enraciné dans la tradition musicale romantique austro-allemande. Le dernier mouvement, un rondo tzigane aussi entraînant que les Danses hongroises de Brahms, est d’une inventivité qui lui a valu une place parmi les œuvres préférées d’Arnold Schönberg.

Toen de Britse componist Edward Elgar op een avond thuiskwam, zette hij zich nog even achter de piano om wat te improviseren. Zijn vrouw merkte een melodietje op dat haar beviel en Edward Elgar besloot dit verder uit te werken.

Wat begon als een grap, mondde echter uit in een monumentale compositie die intussen tot de meest gespeelde muziek uit de 19de eeuw behoort. De Enigmavariaties bestaan uit een thema (“het raadsel”) en veertien variaties die elk zijn opgedragen aan specifieke vrienden van de componist.

Edward Elgar stelde zich voor hoe zijn vrienden op een bepaald onderwerp zouden reageren en vertaalde die reacties in muziek. De eerste variatie wijdde hij aan zijn vrouw, de laatste variatie aan hemzelf.

Lorsque le compositeur britannique Edward Elgar rentra chez lui, un soir, il s’assit encore un peu au piano pour improviser. Sa femme lui fit remarquer une mélodie qu’elle aimait particulièrement, et Edward Elgar décida de la développer. Ce qui commença comme une plaisanterie devint une composition monumentale comptant parmi les œuvres les plus jouées du 19e siècle.

Les Variations Enigma sont composées d’un thème (« l’énigme ») et de quatorze variations, chacune étant dédiée à l’un des amis du compositeur. Edward Elgar se demanda comment ses amis réagiraient à un sujet donné et traduisit ces réactions en musique. La première variation est dédiée à sa femme, la dernière à lui-même.

ELGAR’S ENIGMA EN —› The world-famous piano duo Silver-Garburg commissioned the Austrian composer Richard Dünser to write a new arrangement of Johannes Brahms’ First Piano Quartet. Originally written for piano, violin, viola and cello, this composition now resounds in a version for piano four hands and string orchestra. Brahms’ First piano quartet - consisting of the obligate four movements - is deeply rooted in the Austrian-German Romantic musical tradition. However, the last movement, a gypsy rondo as exhilarating as Brahms’ Hungarian dances, is so inventive that Arnold Schönberg called it one of his favourite pieces.

When the British composer Edward Elgar came home one evening, he sat behind the piano for a while to improvise. His wife noticed a tune that she liked and Edward Elgar decided to develop it further. What started as a joke, however, culminated in a monumental composition that is now one of the most played music of the 19th century. The Enigma Variations consist of a theme (“the enigma”) and fourteen variations, each of which is dedicated to a specific friend of the composer. Edward Elgar imagined how each of his friends would react to a particular subject and translated those reactions into music. He dedicated the first variation to his wife and the last to himself.

NL —› Het Belgian National Orchestra voert in twee titanische concerten alle pianoconcerti van de Russische componist Sergei Rachmaninoff uit, naast de eveneens voor piano en orkest geschreven Rapsodie op een thema van Paganini. Voor deze mammoetonderneming worden twee pianisten van wereldformaat geëngageerd: de Oezbeekse Behzod Abduraimov en de Russische Denis Kozjoechin (Eerste Prijs Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd 2010).

Sergei Rachmaninoff componeerde op 18-jarige leeftijd, bruisend van zelfvertrouwen, zijn Eerste pianoconcerto. Een paar jaar later belandde hij door de desastreuze première van zijn Eerste symfonie echter in een diepe depressie. Een behandeling met hypnosetherapie sloeg aan en Rachmaninoff begon terug te componeren. Dit resulteerde in zijn Tweede pianoconcerto, een compositie die hij opdroeg aan de psychiater die hem behandelde.

Zijn Derde pianoconcerto componeerde Rachmaninoff als visitekaartje voor een Amerikaanse tournee. Na het uitbreken van de Russische Revolutie in 1917 vestigde de componist-pianist zich definitief in de Verenigde Staten. Door zijn emigratie stopte Rachmaninoff echter nagenoeg met componeren: in de laatste 20 jaar van zijn leven schreef hij slechts 6 composities, waaronder het Vierde pianoconcerto (dat aanvankelijk slecht werd ontvangen) en de Rapsodie op een thema van Paganini (dat als een pianoconcerto in één beweging kan worden beschouwd).

EN —› In two titanic concerts, the Belgian National Orchestra performs all the piano concertos of the Russian composer Sergei Rachamninoff, as well as the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, also written for piano and orchestra.

Two world-class pianists will be engaged for this mammoth enterprise, the Uzbek Behzod Abduraimov and the Russian Denis Kozhukhin (First Prize, Queen Elisabeth Competition 2010).

C’est à l’âge de 18 ans, débordant de confiance en lui, que Sergei Rachmaninoff composa son Premier Concerto pour piano. Une année plus tard, il tomba pourtant dans une profonde dépression suite à la création désastreuse de sa Première Symphonie. Un traitement thérapeutique par hypnose lui permit de recommencer à composer et de donner naissance au Deuxième Concerto pour piano, une œuvre qu’il dédia au psychiatre l’ayant suivi. Quant au Troisième Concerto pour piano, il le composa pour une tournée américaine en guise de carte de visite. Après le début de la Révolution russe en 1917, le compositeur s’installa définitivement aux États-Unis, mais arrêta de composer : il ne signa que six œuvres au cours des vingt dernières années de sa vie, dont le Quatrième Concerto pour piano (assez mal reçu dans un premier temps) et la Rhapsodie sur un thème de Paganini (qui peut être considérée comme un concerto pour piano à mouvement unique).

Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his First Piano Concerto at the age of 18, bubbling with self-confidence. A few years later, however, the disastrous premiere of his First Symphony plunged him into a deep depression. A treatment with hypnosis therapy caught on and Rachmaninoff started composing again. This resulted in his Piano Concerto No. 2, which he dedicated to the psychiatrist who treated him. Rachmaninoff composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 as a calling card for an American tour.

After the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in 1917, the composer-pianist settled permanently in the United States. However, due to his emigration Rachmaninoff almost stopped composing: in the last 20 years of his life he wrote only 6 compositions, including the Fourth Piano Concerto. (which was initially poorly received) and the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini (which can be considered a piano concerto in one movement).

MUZIEK DER SFEREN NL —› De Helios ouverture van de Deense componist Carl Nielsen is een vertoning van de wijze waarop de zon op en onder gaat boven de Egeïsche Zee. Carl Nielsens vrouw, de bekende beeldhouwster Anne Marie Brodersen, had in 1903 een beurs gekregen die haar in staat stelde om naar Athene te reizen en daar kopieën te maken van de bas-reliëfs en standbeelden in het Acropolismuseum. Carl Nielsen, zelf in archeologie geïnteresseerd, bezocht haar en werd tijdens enkele wandelingen gefascineerd door het lichtspel boven de Egeïsche Zee. De ontzettend fijngevoelig geïnstrumenteerde Helios ouverture is vandaag Carl Nielsens meest gespeelde werk.

Aram Khachaturian behoort samen met Dmitri Shostakovich en Sergei Prokofiev tot de drie belangrijkste componisten van de Sovjetperiode. Geboren in Armenië, verhuisde hij op 18-jarige leeftijd naar Moskou. Zijn Vioolconcerto, gecomponeerd in nauwe samenwerking met de beroemde violist (en legendarische winnaar van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd) David Oistrach, is sterk beïnvloed door Armeense volksmuziek en bezit een ongelofelijk melodieus karakter.

Na van een vriend een inleiding te hebben gekregen tot de astrologie, raakte de Britse componist Gustav Holst zo enthousiast over het verband tussen de stand van de hemellichamen en het lot van de mensen op aarde, dat hij besloot hieraan een grootschalig orkestwerk te wijden. Zijn intussen immens populair geworden compositie The Planets gaat voor

décida de lui consacrer une grande œuvre orchestrale. Devenue immensément populaire, Les Planètes s’attarde sur l’influence qu’a chacune des sept planètes du système solaire sur l’esprit humain. Carl Nielsen, qui s’intéressait lui aussi à l’archéologie, lui rendit visite et fut fasciné, au cours de ses promenades, par le jeu de lumières au-dessus de la mer Égée. L’ouverture Helios, à l’orchestration extrêmement subtile, est aujourd’hui son œuvre la plus jouée.

Avec Dmitri Shostakovich et Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian est l’un des trois compositeurs majeurs de la période soviétique. Né en Arménie, il déménagea à Moscou à l’âge de 18 ans. Son Concerto pour violon, composé en étroite collaboration avec le célèbre violoniste (et lauréat légendaire du Concours Reine Élisabeth) David Oïstrakh, est largement influencé par la musique populaire arménienne et possède un caractère incroyablement mélodieux.

EN —› The Helios Overture by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen describes the way in which the sun rises and sets over the Aegean Sea. Carl Nielsen’s wife, the famous sculptress Anne Marie Brodersen, had received a scholarship in 1903 that enabled her to travel to Athens to make copies of the bas-reliefs and sculptures in the Acropolis museum. Carl Nielsen who was interested in archaeology himself, visited her and, while out walking, became fascinated by the play of light above the Aegean Sea during several walks. The incredibly sensitive orchestrated Helios Overture is today Carl Nielsen’s most played work.

Aram Khachaturian belongs, together with Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergey Prokofiev, to the three most important composers of the Soviet period. Born in Armenia, he moved to Moscow at the age of eighteen. His Violin Concerto, composed in close collaboration with the famous violinist (and legendary winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition) David Oistrach, is strongly influenced by Armenian folk music and has an incredibly melodic character.

Having been introduced to astrology by a friend, the British composer Gustav Holst was so enthusiastic about the connection between the positions of the heavenly bodies and the fate of humans on earth that he decided to dedicate a large-scale orchestral work to it. His now immensely popular composition The Planets examines the influence of each of the seven planets in our solar system on the human psyche. As is the case with Carl Nielsen’s Helios Overture, the colourful instrumentation catches the eye.

En quelques années seulement, le nationalisme croissant avait relégué Dvořák du statut d’Allemand acculturé à celui de Tchèque concurrent de la culture germanophone régnant à Vienne. Après une première à grand succès à Prague, la Sixième Symphonie de Dvořák gagna pourtant rapidement en popularité dans le reste de l’Europe.

Beaucoup se laissèrent charmer par son mélange équilibré entre le modernisme de Liszt et Wagner, le conservatisme de Brahms et les nombreux éléments folkloriques tchèques (comme le recours à une danse bohémienne, la furiant, dans le troisième mouvement).

Zijn eerste opdracht was het schrijven van enkele composities die door de studenten klarinet op hun examen moesten worden uitgevoerd. Debussy schreef de Première rhapsodie, opgedragen aan de klarinetleraar Prosper Mimart, eerst voor piano en klarinet, maar was later zo tevreden over zijn compositie dat hij ook een orkestversie maakte.

Een tweede rapsodie was gepland, maar werd nooit realiteit.

Anti-Tsjechisch sentiment verhinderde de première van Antonín Dvořáks Zesde symfonie in Wenen, ook al was zij geschreven voor Hans Richter, chef-dirigent van de Wiener Philharmoniker. Een van zijn bekendste werken is UFO, een stuk dat besteld werd door het National Symphony Orchestra van Washington DC. Het is een heel bijzonder werk, want de solist moet op een onverwachte manier het podium betreden en zijn instrumenten op ongewone manieren bespelen. Van de vijf delen van de originele versie van UFO brengt het Belgian National Orchestra het laatste, ‘Objects’. Daarin bespeelt de solist vijf tomtoms, acht octobans, bongo’s, een drumstel, een ‘buitenaardse cimbaal’, drie ‘Splash’-cimbalen, diverse metalen voorwerpen, drie woodblocks, drie Latin cowbells, een mechanische sirene en een waterphone.

Samen prikkelen ze de verbeelding en geven ze een idee hoe de ingewikkelde machinerie van een ruimteschip zou kunnen klinken.

De orkestratie van Water concerto van Tan Dun is ook heel zorgvuldig uitgekozen. In dit intieme werk duikt de componist in de herinneringen van zijn kindertijd en mengt hij allerlei kleuren. ACROSS THE SEAS

Water concerto / wou wekken, net zoals het geluid van zwemmen, van dingen die in het water vallen, het geluid van dansend water, de klank van speels water, het klotsen van water. Zijn muziek ontvouwt voor de luisteraar een landschap vol betoverende schoonheid.

Om bij dezelfde thematiek te blijven, water dus, daalt het Belgian National Orchestra ook diep onder het wateroppervlak af met de compositie Become ocean van John Luther Adams. The New Yorker omschreef dit werk als ‘de mooiste apocalyps uit de muziekgeschiedenis’. Become ocean neemt het publiek mee naar de diepzee. Tussen verontrustende wervelingen en stiltes in kan de luisteraar zich laten meevoeren door en hullen in de intrinsieke rust van deze symfonie. Die maakt trouwens deel uit van een cyclus die Adams rond de vier elementen heeft gecomponeerd. Volgens hem is de mens in staat het isolement en het cynisme van de moderne samenleving te overstijgen door contact te zoeken met iets dat groter is dan hijzelf. Dit werk werd in 2014 bekroond met een Pulitzer en deze uitvoering gaat gepaard met een wereldpremière, want de muziek wordt vergezeld van een film van videokunstenaar Lillevan.

Parmi ses œuvres les plus connues figure UFO, une œuvre commandée par le National Symphony Orchestra de Washington DC. Cette œuvre est particulière car le soliste est censé rentrer sur scène de façon impromptue et jouer de ses instruments de manière inattendue. Des cinq mouvements que compte initialement UFO, le Belgian National Orchestra jouera le dernier, intitulé « Objects ».

Dans celui-ci, le soliste joue sur cinq tom-toms, huit octobans, des

bongos, une batterie, une « alien cymbal », trois cymbales « Splash », divers objets en métal, trois woodblocks, trois Latin cowbells, une sirène mécanique et un waterphone.

Cet arrangement suggère la machinerie complexe que pourrait avoir un vaisseau spatial.

L’orchestration du Water concerto de Tan Dun est tout aussi recherchée. Dans cette œuvre intimiste, le compositeur replonge dans sa mémoire d’enfance et mélange les couleurs. Il va puiser dans ses souvenirs liés aux vieilles dames lavant leur linge dans la rivière de Hunan. Dans une interview donnée en 2007, Tan Dun déclare avoir voulu donner vie à de beaux sons de lessive, ainsi qu’à des sons de nage, des sons de claquement de corps, des sons de danse aquatique, des sons de « taquinerie » de l’eau, et des sons de claquement d’eau. Sa musique fait alors découvrir au spectateur un paysage captivant de beauté.

Afin de continuer dans la thématique de l’eau, le Belgian National Orchestra explorera également les grandes profondeurs avec John Luther Adams et son Become ocean. Qualifiée de « plus belle apocalypse de l’histoire de la musique » par le New Yorker, Become ocean est une œuvre qui emmène son public dans les tréfonds des océans.

Entre turbulences et silences inquiétants, l’auditeur pourra se laisser immerger et envelopper par le calme intrinsèque de cette symphonie. Celle-ci fait d’ailleurs partie d’un cycle pensé par Adams autour des quatre éléments naturels. Pour lui, l’humain a la capacité de passer outre l’isolation et le cynisme de la société moderne en se connectant à quelque chose de plus large que lui. Cet opus a été récompensé d’un Prix Pulitzer en 2014 et sera illustré en première mondiale lors de notre concert par un film du vidéaste Lillevan.

Among his best-known works is UFO, a work commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington DC. The unusual performance includes impromptu appearances and unexpected ways of instrument playing by the soloist. Of UFO’s initial five movements, the Belgian National Orchestra will play the last, entitled ‘Objects’. In this movement, the soloist plays five tom-toms, eight octobans, bongos, drums, an ‘alien cymbal’, three splash cymbals, various metal objects, three woodblocks, three Latin cowbells, a mechanical siren and a waterphone, in an arrangement that suggests the complex machinery of a spacecraft.

The orchestration of Tan Dun’s Water Concerto is equally elaborate. In this intimate piece, the composer dives into his childhood memories and blurs the colours.

He draws on his memories of old women washing their clothes in the Hunan River. In a 2007 interview, Tan Dun said he wanted to bring to life the beautiful sounds of laundry washing, as well as swimming sounds, body popping sounds, water dancing sounds, water teasing sounds, and water popping sounds. His music thus reveals to the audience a landscape of mesmerising beauty.

In keeping with the theme of water, the Belgian National Orchestra will also explore the sea depths with John Luther Adams’ Become Ocean. Described by the New Yorker as “the loveliest apocalypse in musical history”, Become Ocean leads its audience into the water’s depths. In a combination of turbulence and eerie silence, the listener is immersed and surrounded by the symphony’s underlying peacefulness. The work is part of a cycle designed by Adams and based on the four natural elements. He believes that humans have the capacity to overcome the isolation and cynicism of modern society by connecting to something greater than themselves. The work received a Pulitzer Prize in 2014. The concert will be illustrated by the world premiere of a film by video artist Lillevan.

flexion que comme un programme imposé. Le compositeur belge Luc Brewaeys a écrit une version pour orchestre des Préludes particulièrement fidèle à l’original de Debussy. Il n’a ajouté aucune note, a respecté la palette orchestrale de Debussy et a énormément joué avec les couleurs.

De nombreuses influences ont nourri le concerto pour piano écrit par la légende américaine du jazz Brad Mehldau à la demande du Barbican. En matière de texture, il fait d’abord penser à la musique de Debussy, mais il rappelle ensuite surtout l’album « Maiden Voyage » d’Herbie Hancock et la musique de film d’Elmer Bernstein et d’Aaron Copland. Inutile de rappeler que Brad Mehldau est un excellent improvisateur qui n’a de cesse de repousser ses limites : on le ressent à chaque instant.

Orchestra VAN PARIJS TOT NEW YORK NL —› Debussy’s Préludes behoren tot de canon van de pianoliteratuur. Elk van deze 24 korte karakterstukken voorzag Debussy van een beschrijvende titel (o.a.

Danseuses de Delphes, Minstrels en Brouillards). Deze noteerde hij telkens niet aan het begin maar aan het einde van de Préludes, zodat de titels meer als een vrijblijvende nabeschouwing dan als een dwingend programma moeten worden beschouwd. De Belgische componist Luc Brewaeys maakte van de Préludes een orkestversie die bijzonder trouw blijft aan Debussy’s origineel. Hij voegde geen noot toe, hield zich aan Debussy’s orkestraal palet en speelde enorm met kleuren.

Het pianoconcerto dat de Amerikaanse jazzlegende Brad Mehldau op vraag van het Barbican schreef,

ademt vele invloeden uit. Qua textuur doet het denken aan de muziek van Debussy, maar daarnaast herinnert het vooral aan het album Maiden Voyage van Herbie Hancock en aan de filmmuziek van zowel Elmer Bernstein als Aaron Copland. Dat Brad Mehldau een uiterst virtuoze jazzimprovisator is die ervan houdt om zijn grenzen steeds weer te verleggen, blijft echter op elk moment voelbaar.

Debussy provided each of these 24 short character pieces with a descriptive title (such as Danseuses de Delphes, Minstrels and Brouillards). He did not write them down at the beginning but at the end of the Préludes, so that the titles are more like a noncommittal afterthought rather than to be regarded as a compelling programme. The Belgian composer Luc Brewaeys turned the Préludes into an orchestral version that remains particularly faithful to Debussy’s original.

He did not add a single note, adhered to Debussy’s orchestral palette and played significantly/ substantially with colours.

The piano concerto written by the American jazz legend Brad Mehldau at the request of the Barbican exudes many influences. In terms of texture it is reminiscent of Debussy’s music, but in addition to that it is especially reminds of Herbie Hancock’s album Maiden Voyage and the film music of both Elmer Bernstein and Aaron Copland. However, the fact that Brad Mehldau is an extremely virtuosic jazz improviser who loves to push his own boundaries is perceptible throughout.

GLORY TO GOD NL —› Toen de Italiaanse opera in de jaren 1730 in Londen uit de mode raakte, schakelde Handel over op het componeren van Engelstalige oratoria. In Rome, waar opera een tijdlang onder pauselijke ban stond, had Handel in dit genre al enige ervaring opgedaan.

Messiah, geschreven in 1741, was zijn achtste oratorium en gebruikt teksten uit de King James Bible en de Coverdale Psalter. In drie delen wordt de theologische betekenis van Christus, de Bijbelse Messias, bezongen: eerst verkondigen oudtestamentische profeten zijn komst; in een tweede deel komen Christus’ kruisdood, verrijzenis en hemelvaart aan bod (culminerend in het overbekende Hallelujah) en in het laatste deel wordt zijn verlossende rol voor de mensheid verder uitgelegd.

Handels Messiah is de Angelsaksische tegenhanger van Bachs Matthäus-Passion en wordt rond zowel Kerstmis als Pasen veelvuldig opgevoerd. Origineel voor een relatief kleine bezetting geschreven, kwam er in de loop van de 18de en 19de eeuw een traditie op gang om dit oratorium met steeds grotere orkesten en koren te bezetten.

Voor deze uitvoering werkt het Belgian National Orchestra sa-

men met het Chœur de Chambre de Namur en de Britse dirigent Ian Page, die de Angelsaksische opvoeringstraditie (van mammoetconcerten in de Royal Albert Hall tot uitvoeringen met historische instrumenten) door en door kent.

SPAANS EN RUSSISCH VUUR NL —› Het modernisme van de Tataars-Russische componiste Sofia Gubaidulina werd in de Sovjet-Unie niet geapprecieerd. Zij mocht enkel muziek componeren voor documentaires, animatiefilms en radioprogramma’s. Haar compositie Fairytale Poem begon als begeleidende muziek bij een radio-uitzending van het Tsjechische sprookje Het kleine krijtje. Daarin droomt een krijtje ervan door een kunstenaar te worden gebruikt, maar ziet zichzelf tijdens een saaie wiskundeles wegslinken. Een jongen steelt het krijtje en begint ermee op straat te tekenen. Het krijtje is hierover zo verheugd, dat het niet merkt dat het langzaam opgeraakt.

Sofia Goebaidoelina beschouwde dit sprookje als een metafoor voor het kunstenaarsleven en herwerkte haar muziek tot een zelfstandig toongedicht.

In de tweede beweging verwerkt Rodrigo zijn meest traumatische belevenis: zijn doodgeboren eerste zoon en de ongewisheid of zijn vrouw (die de blinde componist als het licht van zijn leven beschouwde) zou overleven.

Een van Prokofievs grootste operaprojecten – De Vuurengel – was meteen ook een van zijn grootste teleurstellingen. Na 9 jaar aan de opera te hebben gecomponeerd, raakte het werk maar niet opgevoerd. Dit bezorgde Prokofiev zoveel hartzeer dat hij besloot de beste passages te bundelen tot een suite.

Aangezien beide hoofdthema’s uiterst geschikt waren voor de expositie van een sonate in allegro-tempo, veranderde de suite algauw in een volledige symfonie. Prokofievs Derde symfonie is een complex en hard geïnstrumenteerd werk dat de duistere atmosfeer van De Vuurengel bijzonder goed weergeeft. De opera zelf werd pas na Prokofievs dood opgevoerd, maar viert sindsdien wereldwijd successen.

FEUX ESPAGNOLS ET RUSSES FR —› Le modernisme de la compositrice tataro-russe Sofia Gubaidulina n’était pas apprécié en Union soviétique. Elle n’était autorisée qu’à composer des bandesson pour des documentaires, des films d’animation et des programmes radiophoniques. Fairytale Poem a d’abord été conçue comme musique d’accompagnement radiophonique de la fable tchèque La Petite Craie, qui raconte l’histoire d’une petite craie rêvant d’être utilisée par un artiste, mais voyant sa taille réduire de plus en plus au fil d’une leçon

ennuyante de mathématiques. Un petit garçon vole alors la craie et commence à dessiner dans la rue.

La craie est si heureuse qu’elle ne se rend pas compte qu’elle va bientôt disparaître à force d’être utilisée. Sofia Gubaidulina vit dans cette fable une métaphore de la vie d’artiste et retravailla la musique pour en faire un poème symphonique autonome.

Le Concierto de Aranjuez est l’œuvre la plus connue de Joaquín Rodrigo. Ce concerto pour guitare, composé au lendemain de la guerre civile espagnole, évoque les jardins du Palais royal d’Aranjuez, où Rodrigo se promenait souvent pendant sa jeunesse – souvent en compagnie de Victoria, sa future femme.

Dans le deuxième mouvement, Rodrigo replonge dans son expérience la plus traumatisante : son premier fils mort-né et l’incertitude quant à la survie de sa femme (que le compositeur aveugle considérait comme la lumière de sa vie).

L’un des plus grands projets opératiques de Prokofiev – L’Ange de feu – fut aussi d’emblée l’une de ses plus grandes déceptions. Après avoir passé neuf ans à composer cet opéra, l’œuvre peinait à être interprétée. Prokofiev était si déçu qu’il décida d’en associer les meilleurs passages dans une suite. Étant donné que les deux thèmes principaux se prêtaient à merveille à l’exposition d’une sonate de tempo rapide, la suite prit vite la forme d’une symphonie complète.

La Troisième Symphonie de Prokofiev est une œuvre complexe et à l’instrumentation difficile, qui rend particulièrement bien l’ambiance sombre de L’Ange de feu. L’opéra n’a été donné en public qu’après la mort de Prokofiev, mais connaît depuis le succès dans le monde entier.

SPANISH AND RUSSIAN FIRE EN —› The Tartar-Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina’s modernism was not appreciated in the Soviet Union. She was only allowed to compose music for documentaries, animated films and radio programmes. Her composition Fairytale Poem started as accompanying music to a radio broadcast of the Czech fairy tale The Little Chalk. In this story, a chalk dreams of being used by an artist, but sees itself shrinking away during a boring math lesson.

A boy steals the chalk and starts to draw with it on the street. The chalk is so happy about this, that it doesn’t notice that it is slowly getting used up. Sofia Gubaidulina regarded this fairy tale as a metaphor for artistic life and reworked her music into an independent poem.

The Concierto de Aranjuez is Joaquin Rodrigo’s most famous composition. This guitar concerto, written shortly after the Spanish Civil War, evokes the gardens of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez where Rodrigo would walk during his youth - usually in the company of Victoria, his future wife. In the second movement, Rodrigo incorporates his most traumatic experience: his stillborn first son and the uncertainty as to whether his wife (whom the blind composer regarded as the light of his life) would survive.

One of Prokofiev’s biggest opera projects - The Fiery Angel - was also one of his biggest disappointments. After 9 years of composing, the work didn’t get played.

This caused Prokofiev so much heartache that he decided to bundle the best passages into a suite.

Since both main themes were extremely suitable for the exposition of a sonata in allegro tempo, the suite soon turned into a complete symphony. Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3 is a complex and heavily-instrumented work that represents the dark atmosphere of The Fiery Angel particularly well. The opera was not performed until after Prokofiev’s death, but has been a global success ever since.

Zijn vader, de beroemde muziekcriticus Julius Korngold, beschouwde dit als een verspilling van zijn talent en bleef zijn zoon aanmanen terug ‘ernstige muziek’ te schrijven. Pas in het jaar van zijn vaders dood, hetzelfde jaar waarin het nazisme werd verslagen, gaf Erich hier gehoor aan en finaliseerde een vioolconcerto dat al een tijdlang door zijn hoofd spookte.

Korngolds Vioolconcerto ademt de sfeer uit van het fin de siècle Wenen, is zeer groot bezet en kan qua orkestratie wedijveren met de beste werken van Gustav Mahler en Richard Strauss.

Il requiert un orchestre de très grande envergure et son orchestration rivalise avec les meilleures pages de Gustav Mahler et Richard Strauss.

EN —› The Austrian composer Erich Korngold emigrated to America to escape Nazism. In Hollywood he developed a career as a film music composer. His father, renowned music critic Julius Korngold, considered this a waste of his talent and kept urging his son to compose ‘serious music’. It was not until the year of his father’s death, the same year in which Nazism was defeated, that Erich followed suit and finished a violin concerto that had been haunting his mind for some time. Korngold’s Violin Concerto exudes with the atmosphere of fin-de-siècle Vienna, with a huge instrumentation, and rivals the best works of Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss in terms of orchestration.

De kleurrijke orkestraties van Korngold en Strauss zijn diepgaand beïnvloed door het werk van de vroeg 19de-eeuwse componist Hector Berlioz. Naast een leerboek over het instrumenteren, sprak vooral diens Symphonie fantastique tot de verbeelding. Deze compositie, die net als een klassiek drama uit vijf delen bestaat, is tevens het eerste programmawerk uit de muziekgeschiedenis.

Berlioz vertelt hierin het (autobiografische) verhaal van een jonge kunstenaar wiens liefde niet wordt beantwoord. Opiumdromen laten hem, na een onbevredigende pastorale idylle, in een woeste menigte naar een schavot marcheren. Na het vallen van de bijl vindt hij zichzelf terug op een heksensabbat.

De vrouw op wie de jonge kunstenaar verliefd is, krijgt een muzikaal motief toegewezen (‘idee fixe’) dat in alle delen van de symfonie weerklinkt. Hiermee legde Berlioz de basis voor het Wagneriaanse Leitmotiv.

Les orchestrations colorées de Korngold et Strauss sont profondément influencées par l’œuvre d’Hector Berlioz, compositeur du début du 19e siècle. Outre son manuel d’instrumentation, celui-ci laissa surtout derrière lui une Symphonie fantastique à l’imagination si riche qu’elle fut particulièrement inspirante pour ses deux successeurs. Cette œuvre, constituée de cinq parties suivant la tradition dramatique classique, est aussi la première œuvre à programme de l’histoire de la musique. Berlioz y raconte l’histoire (autobiographique) d’un jeune artiste qui aime sans être aimé en retour. Les rêves provoqués par l’opium le mènent, après une idylle pastorale insatisfaisante, au beau milieu d’une foule en colère qui se dirige vers l’échafaud. Après la chute de la hache, il assiste à un sabbat de sorcières. La femme dont le jeune artiste est amoureux est représentée par un motif musical (« l’idée fixe ») que l’on retrouve dans tous les mouvements de la symphonie. Berlioz jette ainsi les bases du leitmotiv wagnérien.

The colourful orchestrations of Korngold and Strauss are profoundly influenced by the work of the early-19th-century composer Hector Berlioz. In addition to a textbook on orchestration, his Symphonie fantastique appealed to the imagination. This composition, which consists of five parts like a classical drama, is also the first programme piece in music history. Berlioz tells the (autobiographical) story of a young artist whose love is not answered. After an unsatisfying pastoral idyll, opium dreams let him march through a ferocious crowd to a scaffold.

After the falling of the axe, he finds himself at a witch’s Sabbath. The woman with whom the young artist is in love is assigned a musical motif (‘idee fixe’) that resounds throughout the symphony. With this, Berlioz laid the foundations for the Wagnerian Leitmotiv.

Faut-il encore préciser que, dans les circonstances exceptionnelles du concours, l’orchestre qui les accompagne est d’une importance capitale ? Durant la semaine de la finale, les lauréats exécutent des prestations d’une qualité inouïe, mais l’orchestre est lui aussi au sommet de sa forme. Les lauréats doivent en effet pouvoir compter sur leurs collègues de l’orchestre.

Nos musiciens ressentent beaucoup d’empathie pour les jeunes qui, durant la semaine de la finale, se produisent sur la plus importante scène du monde.

Music Competition — Cello FINALE NL —› De wedstrijd die de naam draagt van de koningin die een (erg) groot hart had voor de kunsten, is sinds zijn ontstaan in de jaren 30 uitgegroeid tot een van de meest prestigieuze referentiepunten voor aanstormend muzikaal talent.

Zo geldt de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd niet alleen als een belangrijke toetssteen voor ambitieuze jonge musici (die een carrière als solist willen uitbouwen), maar is het Concours ook de facto een fantastisch forum waar de hele wereld van de klassieke muziek bijeen komt. Oud-laureaten bemannen er de jury, muziekdirecteurs van concertzalen en festivals, impresario’s, componisten, dirigenten en talloze andere musici tekenen traditiegetrouw voor de duur van de wedstrijd present in Brussel.

Net als het publiek, dat massaal aantreedt voor de bijzondere, vaak geëlektrificeerde sfeer die tijdens het gebeuren in de concertzaal hangt. Laureaten hebben veel weg van olympische atleten: een groot uithoudingsvermogen, discipline en kracht.

Hoeft het nog gezegd te worden dat in de bijzondere omstandigheden van de wedstrijd het orkest waarmee ze optreden van cruciaal belang is. Niet alleen de laureaten zetten tijdens de finaleweek topprestaties neer, ook het orkest

is dan in bloedvorm. De laureaten moeten immers op hun collega-orkestmusici kunnen vertrouwen. Er is dan ook veel empathie bij de orkestleden voor de jongelui die zich tonen op het – tijdens de finaleweek – belangrijkste concertpodium van de wereld.

D’anciens lauréats prennent part au jury et, traditionnellement, des directeurs musicaux de salles de concert et de festivals, des impresarios, des compositeurs, des chefs d’orchestre et bon nombre d’autres musiciens sont présents à Bruxelles pendant toute la durée du concours.

NL —› Lord Byrons Manfred is, naast Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, een van de bekendste 19de-eeuwse horrorverhalen. Geestbezweringen, middeleeuwse kastelen in woeste berglandschappen en een Faustiaanse protagonist die bij zijn dood zowel de hemel als de hel vervloekt, vormen de kern van dit door en door romantische leesdrama. Robert Schumann was er zodanig van onder de indruk dat hij toneelmuziek schreef bij de Duitse vertaling. De ouverture van deze toneelmuziek vat Manfred uitzonderlijk goed samen en werd deel van het concertrepertoire.

FR —› Manfred de Lord Byron est, avec Frankenstein de Mary Shelley, l’un des récits d’horreur les plus célèbres du 19e siècle. La conjuration de fantômes, les châteaux moyenâgeux perdus dans des paysages montagneux sauvages et un protagoniste faustien qui maudit tant le paradis que les enfers au moment de sa mort : voilà le cœur d’un drame littéraire romantique. In tegenstelling tot Schumann stond Mendelssohn allesbehalve bekend als een lijdende kunstenaar. Componeren kostte hem weinig moeite: zijn Eerste pianoconcert schudde hij in enkele dagen tijd uit zijn mouw. De pianopartij zou Mendelssohn niet eens opgeschreven hebben: die speelde hij bij de première uit zijn hoofd. Verdere uitvoeringen van Clara Schumann en Franz Liszt zorgden ervoor dat Mendelssohns Eerste pianoconcerto bijzonder populair werd.

Het werk dat nu bekend staat als zijn Vierde symfonie, begon Robert Schumann een paar maanden na het voltooien van zijn Eerste symfonie te componeren. De première in december 1841 was echter desastreus: Mendelssohn was als dirigent niet beschikbaar en het pianoduet dat Clara Schumann en Franz Liszt als publiekslokker speelden, deed Schumanns slecht uitgevoerde Symfonie in d klein verbleken. Meer dan 10 jaar later nam Schumann zijn symfonie weer ter hand, bracht ingrijpende wijzigingen aan en publiceerde ze vervolgens als zijn Vierde (en ook laatste) symfonie.

Contrairement à Schumann, Mendelssohn était tout sauf un artiste en souffrance. Il composait comme il respirait et coucha son Premier Concerto pour piano sur papier en l’espace de quelques jours seulement. On raconte qu’il n’aurait même pas pris la peine d’écrire la partie pour piano et qu’il l’aurait jouée de mémoire lors de la création de l’œuvre. Les interprétations successives de Clara Schumann et Franz Liszt ont contribué à la popularité de ce Premier Concerto pour piano de Mendelssohn.

L’œuvre que nous connaissons aujourd’hui comme la Quatrième Symphonie de Robert Schumann fut entamée quelques mois après l’achèvement de sa Première Symphonie. La première, en décembre 1841, fut cependant désastreuse : Mendelssohn n’était pas disponible pour la diriger, et l’interprétation de piètre qualité de cette symphonie en ré mineur fit pâle figure devant le duo de piano formé par Clara Schumann et Franz Liszt, censé servir d’appât pour le public. Plus d’une décennie plus tard, Schumann retravailla la pièce, la modifia en profondeur et la publia comme sa Quatrième (et dernière) Symphonie.

EN —› Lord Byron’s Manfred is, alongside Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, one of the best-known horror stories of the 19th century. Exorcisms, medieval castles in inhospitable mountain landscapes and a Faustian protagonist who curses both heaven and hell as he dies are all at the heart of this thoroughly romantic drama. Robert Schumann was so impressed that he wrote a theatrical music for the German translation. The overture of this theatrical music, which Manfred summarizes exceptionally well became part of the concert repertoire.

Unlike Schumann, Mendelssohn stood anything but known as a suffering artist. Composing took him little effort: he shook his First piano concerto out of his sleeve in just a few days. Apparently, he did not even write out the piano score: he played it from memory during the premiere. Further performances by Clara Schumann and Franz Liszt ensure the outstanding success of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Robert Schumann began writing the work that is now known as his Symphony No. 4 a few months after the completion of his Symphony No. 1. However, its December 1841 premiere was a disaster: Mendelssohn was not available to conduct and the piano duet that Clara Schumann and Franz Liszt played as a crowd-puller outshone Schumann’s poorly-executed Symphony in d minor. More than ten years later, Schumann returned to his symphony, made significant changes to it and then published it as his Symphony No. 4 (and also his last).

EEN HEMEL VOL VIOLEN NL —› Vier zachte paukenslagen openen Beethovens enige Vioolconcerto. Volgens sommigen reflecteert het steeds terugkerende paukenmotief in de eerste beweging de euforische stemming die heerste tijdens de Franse Revolutie. Grote omwentelingen stonden voor de deur en alles scheen mogelijk. De première van Beethovens Vioolconcerto was maar een matig succes omdat de partituur veel te laat werd voltooid en de solist tijdens het concert delen moest zichtlezen. Jaren na Beethovens dood werd het Vioolconcerto echter door Mendelssohn terug opgevist en begon het aan een zegetocht langsheen de Europese concerthuizen.

Ook Mahlers Vierde symfonie begint met een sterk ritmisch motief, ditmaal gespeeld door sledebelletjes die op een stok zijn gemonteerd. Waar die stok in het eerste deel nog traag en bedachtzaam wordt geschud, daar komt ditzelfde instrument agressief tot inzet in de vierde en laatste beweging.

Een sopraan schildert met een gedicht uit de volksliederenverzameling Des Knaben Wunderhorn een hemels tafereel. Het ritmische motief verstoort de idylle en leidt een passage in die verhaalt hoe meerdere dieren voor het feestmaal worden geslacht. Mahlers Vierde symfonie kent een vrij klassieke opbouw, duurt niet langer dan een uur en is relatief klein bezet. Laatromantisch pathos maakt plaats voor nieuwe eenvoud: een humoreske tweede beweging en een innig, verheven adagio beroeren zonder het gebruik van romantische breedspraak.

Selon certains, le motif récurrent aux timbales du premier mouvement reflète l’atmosphère euphorique qui régnait pendant la Révolution française. De grands changements s’annonçaient et tout semblait possible. La première du Concerto pour violon de Beethoven ne rencontra qu’un succès modéré parce que la partition fut terminée trop tard et que le soliste dut la déchiffrer pendant le concert. Des années après la mort de Beethoven, le Concerto pour violon fut repêché par Mendelssohn et entama une marche triomphale dans les salles de concert européennes.

EN —› Four soft tympani beats open Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto. According to some, the recurring tympani motif in the first movement reflects the euphoric mood that prevailed during the French Revolution. Great change was imminent and anything seemed possible. The premiere of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto was only a moderate success, as the score was completed far too late and the soloist was forced to sight-read during the concert.

Years after Beethoven’s death, however, the Violin Concerto was picked up again by Mendelssohn and began a triumphal march along the European concert halls.

La Quatrième Symphonie de Mahler commence elle aussi par un motif rythmique, cette fois confié à des grelots montés sur un bâton. Si celui-ci est d’abord agité lentement et sagement dans le premier mouvement, ce même instrument se montre plus agressif dans le quatrième et dernier mouvement. Une soprano peint, à l’aide d’un poème tiré du recueil de chants populaires Des Knaben Wunderhorn, un tableau divin. Le motif rythmique vient déranger l’idylle et introduit un passage évoquant le sacrifice de plusieurs animaux pour le repas de fête. La Quatrième Symphonie de Mahler répond à une structure assez traditionnelle, ne dure pas plus d’une heure et présente une instrumentation plutôt réduite. Le pathos romantique tardif laisse la place à la simplicité : un deuxième mouvement humoristique et un Adagio tendre et noble touchent l’auditeur sans recourir à l’ampleur romantique.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 also starts with a strong rhythmic motif, played this time on sleigh bells mounted on a stick. Though the stick is shaken in a slow and thoughtful manner in the first section, the same instrument is deployed aggressively in the fourth and final movement. A soprano paints a heavenly tableau with a poem from a collection of folk songs, Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

The rhythmic motif disrupts the idyll and introduces a passage that tells of numerous animals being slaughtered for a feast. Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 has a fairly classical structure, lasts no longer than an hour and deploys a relatively small instrumentation. Late Romantic pathos gives way to a new simplicity: a humorous second movement and an intimate, elevated adagio without the use of romantic imagery.

WIE MUZIEK HEEFT, HEEFT DE TOEKOMST NL —› Muziek zit in ieders genen. Muziek is immers een uiting van onze diepste individuele emoties - en die hebben we allemaal zodra we het levenslicht zien. Het Belgian National Orchestra wil die boeiende basis voeden en jongeren enthousiast maken voor klassieke muziek. Een uitdaging? Ja, maar een die haar vruchten afwerpt. Onze jeugdproducties zijn het levende bewijs. En eigenlijk zijn ‘jeugdproducties’ niet de juiste term. Het is een volwaardige programmatie die ruim 10.000 jongeren weet te raken.

Muziek is een inspirerend onderdeel van de weg naar volwassenheid.

Daarom kiezen we voor een gefaseerde aanpak. Vijf- tot zevenjarigen laten we speels kennismaken met het orkest, instrumenten en de dirigent. Deze productie heet ‘t Orkest in ‘t echt en is in samenwerking met het Muziekinstrumentenmuseum. Een rondleiding, een 72

ontdekking van de instrumenten, zelf aan de slag en dan een adembenemend moment: een repetitie bijwonen van het Belgian National Orchestra van dichtbij.

Heb jij kinderen in je klas die niets liever doen dan zingen? Schrijf je dan in voor Sing!, een concert waarbij je leerlingen hun stem mogen verheffen en zich muzikaal helemaal kunnen uitleven. Vooraf komen onze experts naar jouw klas om de bewegingen en melodieën in te oefenen met de kinderen. Dan is het tijd om de show te stelen in de grote zaal van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten. De muzikanten van het Belgian National Orchestra staan jullie al op te wachten.

Voor jongeren in het middelbaar onderwijs is er Musica Maestro. Het secundair onderwijs maakt met veel plezier gebruik van dit programma.

Jongeren zijn enthousiast omdat

klassieke muziek op hun maat en op hun manier wordt gebracht. Ook de setting draagt bij aan deze unieke beleving: de grote, indrukwekkende Henry Le Boeufzaal van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussel.

Een tweede programma voor het secundair onderwijs is Muziek met klasse. Voor een vriendenprijs zetten scholieren hun eerste passen in een fascinerende wereld. Met als onvergetelijke opwarmer voor het concert een ontmoeting met een muzikant, de dirigent of een componist.

Tot slot: Orchestra Academy, een project van het Belgian National Orchestra samen met De Munt waarbij talentvolle jonge musici een heel seizoen worden begeleid door de orkestmuzikanten. Ze krijgen Masterclasses en spelen mee in de producties van de beide orkesten.

Car la musique est l’expression de nos émotions individuelles les plus profondes – celles que nous ressentons tous dès notre venue au monde. Le Belgian National Orchestra entend nourrir ces passionnantes fondations et enthousiasmer les jeunes pour la musique classique. Un défi ? Oui, mais de ceux qui portent leurs fruits. Nos productions jeunesse en sont la preuve vivante. En réalité, les termes ‘productions jeunesse’ ne sont pas réellement appropriés.

Car il s’agit d’une programmation à part entière, qui permet de toucher plus de 10 000 jeunes.

La musique est source d’inspiration pour qui chemine vers l’âge adulte. Notre approche comprend donc plusieurs phases. Les enfants de cinq à sept ans découvrent de manière ludique l’orchestre, les instruments et le chef d’orchestre.

Cette production, proposée en collaboration avec le Musée des Instruments de Musique, porte le nom de ‘L’orchestre en vrai’. Une visite guidée, une découverte des instruments, la mise au travail et ensuite un moment à couper le souffle : c’est ça assister de près à une répétition du Belgian National Orchestra.
