DOC MARKET INTERNATIONAL CO-PRODUCTION WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY 12TH JUNE | 12PM | QUB | £35

In advance of our first Documentary Marketplace on Thursday June 13th, Docs Ireland is delighted to offer an opportunity for filmmakers to develop their core skills in pitching and international co-production.

The DocMarket International Co-production Workshop will help producers and directors to advance their skills at pitching and financing a creative documentary aimed at an international market, and will cover the basics of how to pitch and how to navigate the (often strange) world of international co-production. It will also provide a great networking opportunity to meet with, and learn from, fellow producers and directors.

Paul Pauwels

Andy Glynne

Paul Pauwels is a Consultant and Managing Director of Belgian production company bvba. Paul has a long track record of working with international documentary coproductions from both a commissioning and production point of view. He has been the managing director of the media academy ETMA, commissioning editor for the Belgium public service broadcaster VRT and has almost 30 years of experience with producing documentaries for the national and international market. In addition to these positions Paul Pauwels has been a tutor, moderator and expert at many European workshops and seminars, member of Eurovision Documentary Workgroup and one of the first Chairmen of EDN.

Andy is a triple-BAFTA award winning filmmaker, a producer and an author.

Originally trained as a clinical psychologist, he went on to create the national documentary organisation, DFG - The Documentary Filmmakers Group - and now runs Mosaic Films, a multi-award winning production company. He’s also author of the book “Documentaries and How to Make Them”, as is currently writing “The Documentary Producers’ Handbookk” for Routledge. Andy is the former Chairman of the European Documentary Network, a trainer on many documentary and production courses both in the UK and overseas, and a consultant to numerous organisations and broadcasters around the world. He has produced and directed over 100 films, including both TV and theatrical documentaries, including the recent award-winning “Out of Thin Air” for Netflix and BBC. He has also gained a reputation for his significant output in the genre of animated documentaries - the latter which has won him numerous awards including 3 BAFTAs, a British Animation Award, two Royal Television Society Awards, a Mental Health Media Award.

Clare Sillery Head of Documentary Commissioning, Content Clare Sillery is responsible for documentary output across all four channels. Recent commissions on BBC One include the threeparter Stephen: Murder that Changed a Nation, BAFTA award winning Ambulance and 90-minute film Grenfell.

On BBC Two series include RTS winning Hospital and The Detectives: Murder on the Streets, as well as standout single films like Molly Dineen’s Being Blacker. Series on BBC Three include BAFTA nominated Drugsland, Valley Cops, Life and Death Row and Love and Hate Crime.

Factual dramas have included award winning Murdered for Being Different and Killed

by My Debt. Storyville continues to be the flagship documentary strand for BBC Four bringing the best of international feature docs.

Rachel Hooper

How do you get a film pitched, commissioned and successfully delivered? Producer Rachel Hooper presents a case study of recent RTE/BBCNI/BBC documentary Border Country: When Ireland was Divided (an Erica Starling/Rogan Films production). With Clare Sillery, Head of BBC documentaries, who commissioned the film.

The session will explore financing non-fiction film, navigation coproduction with both production companies and sales agents, and the variance in distribution strategies for these projects.

Rachel is a multi award winning producer of film, tv and radio with a reputation for developing, funding and pitching films to a range of broadcasters. She began working as journalist for the BBC reporting on the end of the Northern Ireland conflict and the Good Friday Agreement before moving into documentary.

She won the United Nations Correspondent Award in 2001 for a documentary on blood diamonds in Sierra Leone then ran the BBCs network radio documentary unit, winning a number of prestigious Sony awards. She then left the BBC to work as a freelance producer for a number of production companies .

Recent credits include Leonora Carrington - The Lost Surrealist (nominated for a Grierson), Find Me A Family (RTS best series). She is currently working on a film for HBO, a feature doc for BBC Arena and a film for BBC 4.

“CONTENT WITHOUT BORDERS” The island of Ireland offers advantages for documentary and factual producers who can receive commissions from Public Service and Commercial Broadcasters on both sides of the border. Stories about Irish experiences resonate with audiences who share a common heritage. However, does the current political landscape affect how these stories are being told, and how they are being commissioned?

At this panel, producers who create content for broadcasters on both sides of the border speak about their experiences, their expectations for the industry and what they see as the challenges ahead.

As part of Docs Ireland, Film Hub NI present a discussion offering a unique insight into the festival and cinema programming process.

Shane Smith is Director of Programming at Hot Docs, North America’s largest Festival and Market for documentary film.

For this workshop as part of Docs Ireland Shane will “pull back the curtain” on the programming process to give filmmakers, those with an interest in film programming and audiences a sense of what goes on the programming room, and some of the many factors at play when we’re making programming decisions.

Smith previously worked at the Toronto International Film Festival as Director of Special Projects, and Director of Public Programs.

Prior to TIFF he was Executive Producer, In-Flight Entertainment, Spafax, overseeing all entertainment on Air Canada; Director of Programming at Channel Zero Inc; Director CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival; Short Film Programmer for Sundance Film Festival, and Programming Director for Inside Out LGBT Film Festival.

Smith has served on juries or participated on panels at festivals and events around the world including Sundance, Cannes, TIFF, Sheffield Doc Fest, DocNYC and IDFA. He is not the guy from Vice.

Though feature documentary and TV documentary production have long been viewed as mutually exclusive filmic mediums, many non-fiction films intersect both formats.

Docs Ireland delves into the opportunities for factual storytellers to straddle these two broadcast platforms and to make the most of co-funding structures between broadcasters and cinematic documentary funders - without compromising on creative form and content.

Elizabeth Klinck’s Research Rights and Clearances workshop “You See It, Let’s Clear It” will delve into the world of archival image research and music rights clearances.

Participants will become familiar with concepts such as “fair dealing” and “orphan works”, and will discover ways to reduce costs and limit risks when including images, footage, and music in documentary media projects. The workshop combines theory and practice and is suited for documentary filmmakers, archivists, archival researchers, directors and producers.

Handouts and a follow up online consultation will be offered in addition to a 90 minute session and 30 minute Q&A. Elizabeth has worked as a producer, editorial and visual researcher, and clearance specialist on numerous award-winning international documentary films and interactive projects that have garnered Emmy, Gemini, CSA, Peabody and Oscar awards.

Northern Ireland is in the eye of the political storm; this tiny province and its irreconcilable border has both the UK and EU over a barrel in the Brexit process.

In 1981 loyalists attempted to kill her. In recent years she has worked as a co-ordinator of community development projects in the South Tyrone Empowerment Programme.

north is almost upon us? This demographic shift is not just a case of nationalists equalling and then outnumbering unionists, in the vein of traditional orange vs green tribalism.

It includes a new kind of voter - secular, liberal, internationalist and pro EU inhabitants of the North, many of whom have spent time away and for whom Brexit has cemented a determination to break away from a crumbling UK. Young people across the country are more liberal, and pro EU.

Former Progressive Unionist Party’s press officer.

Long resigned from the party in the wake of criticism levelled at her regarding a line of condolence she posted on twitter following the death of former deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in 2017.

Susan McKay is a writer from Derry, now living in the Irish Republic. Her journalism has been widely anthologised, including in the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing. She has written two critically acclaimed best sellers, Sophia’s Story, a biography of child abuse survivor Sophia McColgan, and Northern Protestants: An Unsettled People, a portrait of the community from which she comes, as well as a history of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, Without Fear.

Her book on the aftermath of the Irish conflict – Bear in Mind These Dead – was published by Faber and Faber in June 2008.

Her Phd thesis is entitled ‘An Investigation into Ulster Loyalism and the Politics of Misrecognition’

Paul Gosling Paul Gosling is a writer, public speaker, broadcaster and researcher. He specialises in the economy, accountancy, government and the public sector, the co-operative sector and personal finances.

UNA MULLALLY Una Mullally is a columnist for the Irish Times, and editor of Repeal the 8th, an anthology of writing about reproductive rights in Ireland.

Andrew Reid Head of Production Northern Ireland Screen Andrew joined the industry in 1990 as a production runner, after a few years he was sent to London by the BBC to train as a television drama Locations Manager.

He joined Northern Ireland Screen in 1997.

As Head of Production, Andrew is responsible for the investment of Northern Ireland Screen’s £12.5m annual development, production and skills funds. He oversees the delivery of: physical production; project development; new and emerging talent and skills development schemes.

Andrew has a BA in Drama, Film and Television from St John’s York; an MBA from Queen’s University Belfast; is an alumni of Cass Business School’s Inside Pictures; a member of BAFTA and a founding member of the Irish Film and Television Academy.

Máire Ní Chonláin Commissioning Editor TG4. IRELAND. Máire started her TV career as an awardwinning producer/director on productions such as IFTA winning documentary Mad Dog Coll before joining TG4 as commissioning editor.

She commissions historical documentaries, docu-dramas, features and entertainment programmes and formats both for TG4 and international markets. Máire also collaborates with the independent sector on the featurelength drama strand under the brand name Cine4. Niam Itani Niam Itani worked for 5 years at Al Jazeera as a programs producer before returning to Lebanon to make independent films. Her short film Super.Full. screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2012. Twice Upon a Time, a feature documentary she produced & directed, won Best Documentary Award at the Lebanese Film Festival in June 2016 and premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Itani currently works as an Acquisitions Manager with the documentary team at TRT World in Istanbul, where she has been since September 2017.

Ryan Suffern Head of Documentary The Kennedy Marshall Company As the head of the documentary division for The Kennedy/Marshall Company, Ryan Suffern has an active role overseeing a full slate of films. He and Frank Marshall have collaborated on numerous documentaries, including three projects for ESPN Films, one of which Ryan directed for their popular “30 for 30” series. In 2016, Ryan directed Finding Oscar, a feature-length documentary which Steven Spielberg executive produced. In 2017, Ryan produced The China Hustle, which was released by Magnolia Pictures, and he coproduced the Emmy-nominated What Haunts Us. Margje de Koning Chief commissioning editor of documentaries EO, JDocs & IKONdocs After finishing her studies, Margje de Koning directed documentaries for various broadcasting companies for 12 years. In 2004 Margje de Koning became a part time teacher at the Culture & Media studies (department Film& Television at the University of Amsterdam). In 2004, she became Commissioning Editor for a documentary slot of 52’ docs. This meant producing and co-producing creative single 52’-documentaries on contemporary social, social-cultural and moral issues with a strong human interest angle. Amanda Lebow is a Film Finance and Sales agent at leading entertainment and sports agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Lebow works in the Los Angeles office and packages and sells non- fiction feature films and series to studios, independent distributors, and digital platforms. In addition Lebow works on overall film strategy for financiers and producers.

Lebow began her career at Submarine Entertainment in New York City the leading documentary film sales agency. She joined CAA in 2015.

Aleksandra Derewienko holds a Master’s degree in psychology from Jagiellonian University in Krakow. She also completed postgraduate studies in TV and Film Organization at the National Film School in Lodz, and the MEGA Plus course – European Master in Audiovisual Management – from the Media Business School in Spain. In 2016, after working as a sales manager at Taskovski Films for four years, she joined Cat&Docs in sales and acquisition.

She has participated in many international festivals and markets, and was a member of the pitching panels at the Baltic Sea Docs, Visions du Reel, Krakow Film Festival, Doc Lisboa and Zagreb Dox, among others.

As a Project Manager with Screen Ireland, Dearbhla is responsible for an extensive range of projects on a slate which covers Feature Film and Feature Docs, TV Drama Series, Animation – series and Feature, and international co-production. Sean Doyle is Channel 4’s Deputy Head of Features & Formats. Before joining Channel 4, Sean was a Commissioning Editor for Channel 5, where he worked across a range of genres.

Mark Bell is Commissioning Editor, Arts for BBC Vision and is also Arts Co-ordinator of the BBC. A member of the BBC Knowledge Commissioning team, Mark commissions Arts programmes for TV and multiplatform content. BRENDAN j BYRNE Brendan J. Byrne is an award winning filmmaker who has been making films for 25 years. Recent credits as Producer include Sundance World Cinema Documentary selection, Gaza (2019) and as Executive Producer, Hot Docs 2019 World Premiere of Bojaya: Caught In The Crossfire.

Brendan’s recent films as director/producer include One Million American Dreams (Hulu 2019) and Hear My Voice (BBC 2019), and critically acclaimed 2016 documentary Bobby Sands: 66 days. He is directing and producing a feature doc set in South Boston about notorious crime boss James ‘Whitey’ Bulger and his powerful politician brother, Bill Bulger, with unique access to the family for the first time.

Brendan’s narrative fiction projects as producer include JUMP and MAZE. Jump was selected for TIFF in 2012 and Maze reached $1 million at the Irish box office in 2017.

Áine Walsh has been Head of the Irish Language Broadcast Fund at Northern Ireland Screen since 2007. In this role she manages the strategic development and growth of the Irish language independent production sector in Northern Ireland through funding content and managing a range of training initiatives.

Amanda Lebow is a Film Finance and Sales agent at leading entertainment and sports agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Lebow works in the Los Angeles office and packages and sells nonfiction feature films and series to studios, independent distributors, and digital platforms.

She is also responsible for a new Canadian/Northern Ireland co-development initiative with the Canada Media Fund and NI Screen. Prior to Northern Ireland Screen Áine worked as a researcher, assistant producer and producer across entertainment and current affairs in UTV (ITV) and as a radio producer and presenter at BBC Northern Ireland.

In addition Lebow works on overall film strategy for financiers and producers.

Lebow began her career at Submarine Entertainment in New York City the leading documentary film sales agency.

She joined CAA in 2015.

John Turner is an Executive Producer, writer and investigative journalist focusing on the development of nonfiction series and documentary features. John created financial crime series, “Dirty Money” for Netflix . John is currently the Executive Producer of “Click Bait”, a new investigative crime feature also for Netflix.

A 5- film anthology series he developed and produced about the immigration crisis in America for Davis Guggenheim, Concordia Studio and New York Times’ OpDocs recently premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.

An in-demand development consultant with more than 20 years of experience, John was also a Director of Development for the launch of Viceland and has worked on development for a wide range of series and documentaries for Jigsaw, A&E, CNN and HBO. His company Parkdale Pictures recently partnered with Animals Films in Toronto to develop new international coproductions.

The importance of art in social action and activism has long been demonstrated - as a tool to create visibility, encourage conversation and stimulate change.

With a focus on the Marriage Equality and Abortion Rights campaigns in ROI and NI, Activists and Filmmakers involved in these campaigns discuss how recent referendum victories in the Republic (and the films created for these campaigns) have affected Northern Ireland. How best can our activist communities work together to use art and film as an agent for change?

TREASA O BRIEN Treasa O’Brien is a filmmaker and film curator based in Ireland and London. Town of Strangers is her second feature documentary and is screening at Docs Ireland. Her first feature documentary Eat Your Children, a road trip film about austerity, politics and (un)popular resistance in Ireland, has been touring in Ireland since its premiere in 2015 and has been shown in Athens and New York. In 2015-16, Treasa made several short films working with people seeking refuge including Noor at the Port selected for BFI London Film Festival, London Short Film Festival and Berlin British Short Film Festival. Her short film The Blowin, commissioned by the Goethe Institute, has screened at several international festivals and nominated for Best Film Award at Exile Film Festival, Paris. Treasa is the founder of Stinging Hornet Films. She was Executive Director of London Open City Documentary Festival 201214, and is a co-curator of London Essay Film Festival 2015-18. She has written on art and film for Circa, Visual Artists Ireland, Film Ireland, Oberhausen Catalogue, Filmmakers Journal, Sight & Sound, and edited a book on experimental filmmaker Vivienne Dick, published by The Crawford Art Gallery and Lux.

Wuraola Majekodunmi (Ola)

Gillian is a documentary filmmaker based in Belfast. She has worked on a range of factual, current affairs and observational documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4. Her latest film, EQUAL, is set in a changing world told from the perspective of people whose lives are falling between the cracks. She is one of those people. Although used to making documentaries about other people’s lives in EQUAL she is both director and contributor.

Anna Rodgers is director and producer. Her previous films include award winning Today is better than two tomorrows, If these walls could talk and Somebody to Love for which she won an IFTA Best TV Director in 2014. Her film Hold on Tight about gay and lesbian public displays of affection won multiple awards, was Highly Commended at IRIS Prize Festival 2011 and screened internationally.

“Novena”, her subsequent short film won a GALA award for Best TV/Film in 2014, as well as Best Short Documentary at Kerry Film Festival. Anna produced the RTE series ‘Growing up Gay’ and the documentary ‘The Story of Yes’ about the marriage equality referendum. Her current short ‘Strong at the Broken Places’ is screening in the festival.

I am 22 years old and born in Lagos, Nigeria. I moved to Ireland with my parents when I was just 7 months old and have lived in Dublin my whole life. I found a passion for the Irish language at a young age as I went to all-Irish schools. I first became a radio presenter with Raidió na Life almost 5 years ago, presenting the show ‘Seinnliosta an tSathairn’. I often contribute on other radio stations’ shows such as on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, RTÉ 2FM. I am also a contributor to the Motherfoclóir podcast for over a year now, which explores different topics regarding the Irish language .

After years of waiting for equal marriage rights she realised it was necessary to turn the camera on her own life and document one of the biggest inequalities currently facing gay people in Northern Ireland.

I was nominated for the SMEDIAS for the category ‘Iriseoireacht trí Ghaeilge’ in 2018 and 2019. I was also nominated for the SAAI Awards for the category ‘Feachtas Bliain Na Gaeilge’ last year.

I graduated from my undergraduate at IADT last year in BA (hons) English, Media and Cultural studies.

I did my final year thesis on the ‘Politics of Black Women’s Hair, and it inspired me to begin to write poetry. From this course, I developed a further interest in political and social issues. I am now back in IADT studying MA in Digital Broadcast Production at the National Film School.

In the wake of the tragic death of journalist Lyra McKee, Docs Ireland spotlights the work of Irish investigative journalists, who use documentary as their medium.

KATHRYN JOHNSTON Kathryn Johnston is an author, broadcaster, freelance journalist and political activist. She has contributed to The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Belfast Telegraph, The Times, Irish Times, BBC, Ulster Television and many others.

Together with her late husband, Liam Clarke, who died on 27 December 2015, she co-wrote and published Martin Mcguinness: From guns to government.

Kathryn is a member of the Belfast Branch Committee of the National Union of Journalists, a member of the Irish Executive Council of the NUJ and a member of Amnesty International.

The teams behind ‘No Stone Unturned’ and ‘Unquiet Graves’ probe the challenges faced working on these films, how their journalistic freedoms have been compromised in recent years and the current state of investigative non-fiction film.

Barry is a senior reporter with The Detail. He started his career in journalism as a trainee reporter in the Down Democrat in 1996 before moving to The North Belfast News in 1998. In 2001 he joined the Irish News, where he worked for 10 years. Barry has written for the Ireland on Sunday, Sunday Times, Sunday Business Post and Irish Voice. In 2013 he was awarded the overall award in the Attorney General’s Justice Media Awards. The award recognised his investigation into the use of solitary confinement in Northern Ireland’s prisons. In the same year Barry was named CIPR Digital Journalist of the Year.

Esquire magazine said Gibney “is becoming the most important documentarian of our time” in 2010.

Seán Murray is an award winning filmmaker from Belfast. His recent film, ‘Fractured City’ won a Royal Television Society Award at the BFI in London’s South Bank.

Susan McKay is a writer from Derry, now living in the Irish Republic.

Her journalism has been widely anthologised, including in the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing. She has written two critically acclaimed best sellers, Sophia’s Story, a biography of child abuse survivor Sophia McColgan, and Northern Protestants: An Unsettled People, a portrait of the community from which she comes, as well as a history of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, Without Fear. Her book on the aftermath of the Irish conflict – Bear in Mind These Dead – was published by Faber and Faber in June 2008.

Among Gibney’s many works as director are; The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (winner of three Emmys in 2015), Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God (the winner of three 2013 primetime Emmy awards), Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (nominated in 2005 for Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature).

Enron was based on a book of the same name co-authored by Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind.

He is also director of Relapse Pictures; a Belfast based Production Company specializing in a range of work including Documentary, Short Films and commercial promotional videos.

He has directed a number of testimonybased documentaries dealing with legacy issues pertaining to the recent conflict in the North of Ireland and his recent film ‘Ballymurphy’ was screened at the 2015 Irish Film Festival in Rome, Italy.
