rom the moment you turn onto the wide dirt road into Searsport Shores Ocean Campground it’s clear that it’s not a run-of-the-mill place to pitch a tent or anchor an RV. After spending a few minutes walking the grounds, it’s easy to see why tastemakers from Frommer’s to the Boston Globe

The hand-painted welcome sign heralds tidepools, gardens, goats, and honeybees. Rough-cut pieces of wood point to a private beach, kayak rentals, woodland hiking trails, and bandstand, as well as the artists’ studio, where a rotating cast of local artists offers free workshops to guests on everything from pottery to painting to outdoor cooking classes. “It’s not just about the beautiful physical place,” says Astrig Tanguay, who runs the campground with her husband, Steve. “Searsport Shores is about community and music and food and enjoying time outside together.” Astrig’s parents, Rosalie and Zaven, bought the 40-acre campground in the early 1990s, which at that time consisted of a small building and a couple of sheds. Steve, a teacher, and Astrig, an artist and entrepreneur, joined her parents to help them develop the business, which they now own.

They have a three-night minimum so campers get a chance to really explore the beautiful grounds and take advantage of all the offerings. “We wanted to offer experiences that our guests would go home and talk about what they learned,” Astrig says. You can explore the cavernous innards of this 1844 fort on the Penobscot River, which hosted troops during the Spanish American wars, but never saw any action. It’s Maine’s largest historic fort, and one of the best-preserved forts in New England. While you’re there, don’t miss the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, the country’s first bridge observatory and the tallest public bridge observatory in the world, soaring 420 feet — 42 stories — above the river. At the top, you’ll get spectacular panoramic views. The fort and the observatory are usually open May to October, and the park grounds are typically open year-round. Originally built in 1921 to carry vehicle traffic across the Passagassawakeag River, the bridge was closed to cars in the 1960s, and now serves as a popular bike and pedestrian link between the east and west sides of the city. The bridge, a memorial to local men who lost their lives in World War I, is a centerpiece of the harbor. On any given day, you might see anglers, birders, and photographers lolling away on the bridge. It’s also a popular site for city events, like dances and concerts. FORT POINT STATE PARK & LIGHTHOUSE

Located about three miles off U.S. Route 1 in Stockton Springs, the 120-acre Fort Point State Park offers wide-open views of the Penobscot River and the bay, more than a mile of rocky shoreline, yawning fields and forests for hiking, and a great place to paddle, fish, or picnic. Interpretive panels tell the history of the site as a military and tourist center. Take time to get a look at Fort Point Light, rebuilt in 1857 to guide boats to the lumbering port of Bangor, which was the first river light in Maine. The lighthouse and two-story keeper’s house aren’t open to the public, but you can visit the grounds daily. Learn more about the park at maine.gov.

W

hen the pandemic scuttled plans to celebrate Maine’s bicentennial and Belfast’s 250th birthday, city leaders came up with a creative way for locals and visitors to pay homage to Belfast’s colorful history. They took it outside.

1

The Penobscot Marine Museum teamed up with the Belfast Historical Society and Museum, and local designer Norma Whitman to create a series of six expansive banners with historic photos of city life, drawing on both museums’ vast collections. “We wanted images that celebrated Belfast’s architecture, industries, special places, and its citizens at work and at play,” says Kevin Johnson, photo archivist from the Penobscot Marine Museum. Each banner has a theme that relates to the location where it is hung. “It’s amazing to recognize what is still there, and see what is no longer,” he adds. The project was funded by grants from the Maine Bicentennial Commission and the City of Belfast. Other local partners included the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce, the Belfast Creative Coalition, Whitecap Builders, and Our Town Belfast. The banners will remain up through Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021. Learn more about the collection at ourtownbelfast.org. 16

2 1: Masonic Building 137 High Street This banner shows residents at play across the ages. It includes a circus parade on Main Street — complete with a camel and an elephant that would have come to town via steamboat — which would have happened around 1900. It also includes a 1935 photo of the Colonial Theatre, which opened the night the Titanic made its fateful trip in 1912, and the Broiler Day Festival in 1949, a celebration of the city’s poultry-processing industry, which dominated the city in the middle part of the century.

2: Front Street Shipyard Spar Shed, on the Harbor Walk. 39 Front Street This banner pays homage to the city’s shipbuilding past, an appropriate theme for this location in Front Street Shipyard, which ushered in a modern era of shipbuilding to the city when it opened in 2011. The banner features the four-masted schooner Pendleton Brothers (II) under construction in Belfast around 1902 and The Pendleton Sisters on launch day in 1906.

It also shows the corner of Main and Church Streets, plus a view of Post Office Square looking down Main Street showing a parade, as well as spectators and carriages during Old Home Week events around 1901. 5: Consumer Fuel Company 12 Main Street, offices of the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce This banner showcases activity in and around the harbor, including a winter scene on lower Main Street around 1895 and a 1914 photo of employees of the Eastern Illustration and Publishing Company, the postcard publishing company that operated in Belfast from 1909 to 1947. It also shows a baptism in the

harbor, a yachting party around 1901, and the steamer Belfast, which ran between Bangor and Boston between 1909 and 1935. 6: Opera House 109 Church Street This banner, which hangs across from the Belfast Police Department, shows a photo of the police department around 1940, plus a “tramp chair” with a young boy posing inside. It also includes a 1948 photo of the triangular Hayford Block at the intersection of Main, Church, and Beaver Streets — which was built in 1866 after a devastating fire. The iconic building looks strikingly similar to the way it appears today.

wines and drafts, plus creative cocktails like Maine Wild Blueberry Sangria. Neighborhood (132 High St., Belfast; 207-505-0425) has made its mark for its inventive menu that’s locally grown and globally inspired, with twists on Mexican, Greek, and Korean dishes, plus oodles of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free items. The menu has a dizzying array of options, from Jamaican jerk squash tacos, to bahn mi tostadas with slow-roasted pork and a dollop of Sriracha mayo. Owners Seth Whited and Sarah Waldron started with a food truck in Belfast in 2011. Within six years, their fresh creative fare had become so popular that they moved into brick-and-mortar digs. No trip to this coast is complete without a taste of Maine’s signature seafood, and you can crack into the fresh catch from the waterfront Lobster Pound Restaurant (2521 Atlantic Hwy., Lincolnville; 207789-5550), which has been specializing in Homarus americanus for nearly a century. Indulge in a quintessential shore dinner, with steamed soft shells, chowder, steamers, corn on the cob or blueberry pie. Craving a Maine lobster roll? You have the option to make it a jumbo. Anglers Restaurant (215 East Main St., Searsport; 207-548-2405) offers plentiful portions of traditional favorites, like bone-in saltwater smelts and platters that include whole-belly clams, sea scallops, baby shrimp, and haddock, all fried to crispy perfection. For the abundance of specialty food options, there is no shortage of casual mainstays that you can count on for comfort food and cozy atmosphere. That includes Darby’s Restaurant and Pub (155 High St., Belfast; 207-338-2339), which

has a tin ceiling, exposed-brick walls, an antique bar, and intricate woodwork that dates back to the restaurant’s opening in 1865. Owners Lisa and Cory Chase offer an ever-expanding menu of enhanced comfort food that includes everything from prime rib au jus to vegetarian three-bean chili to chicken enchiladas. You’ll see paintings by local artists and pottery honed by Gail Savitz who, with her husband, Jerry, bought and restored the restaurant in 1985 and sold it to the Chases in 2016. Gail’s studio, Front Street Pottery is just around the corner. Over at Rollie’s Bar and Grill (37 Main St., Belfast; 207-338-4502), a local institution since 1972, you can dig into everything from beef tips to pizzas while enjoying views of the harbor from the deck, seated on one of Rollie’s vintage benches, or sidled up to the bar, which was salvaged from a 19th-century sailing ship. Catch up on the scores while you’re there on one Ryan Otis is heartened to see Waldo so many different types of eateries. “Everyone has found a niche,” Otis says. “It gives residents and visitors a choice, and keeps their palates satiated.” •

She planted vegetable garden beds, launched a small Community Supported Agriculture operation, selling shares of what she grew, and started searching for a place to farm in Maine. The Beals checked out dozens of towns their kids and their parents could thrive too. They instantly fell in love with Belfast’s historic downtown, the vibrant year-round community, and how much locals loved the area. “We were just so impressed,” she says. “People are such boosters, they’re so community minded, and there’s always something happening in Belfast.” Six years later, the Beals run Daisy Chain Farm, a thriving organic fruit operation on 64 acres in Belfast, which

Trust, which works to preserve to Waldo County in recent years, who are keeping a local farming tradition alive and well, and satisfying appetites for locally grown, sustainably raised, artisanally made food. In the last decade alone, the operators of Bahner Farm, Toddy Pond Farm, Wild Miller Farm, Dickey Hill Farm, and Wild Grace Farm are among those who have moved here and started farms, selling directly to consumers through farm stands, CSAs, and farmers’ markets. Many of them invite the public to come explore farm life, offering you-pick days, farm dinners, summer camps, and even farm stays. They are following in the footsteps of aspiring agrarians who have been many of them inspired by Helen and Scott Nearing’s book Living the Good Life, which described their homesteading experiences in Brooksville. The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) took root in Unity

Today, Waldo County has three food co-ops, two year-round farmers’ markets, plus nationally feted farm-totable restaurants like Chase’s Daily, as well as The Lost Kitchen in Freedom, which is the subject of a Magnolia Network show that chronicles owner Erin French’s journey to reinvent the restaurant in the pandemic. French also has a new memoir, Finding Freedom: A Cook’s Story, Remaking a Life From Scratch. MOFGA offers support on everything from canning to business planning, while Maine Farmland Trust helps match aspiring farmers who are looking for land with retiring farmers who want to sell, among many other things. The Belfast Farmers’ Market celebrated its 40th birthday last year. Its president is Noami Brautigam, who with her partner, James Gagne, launched

market. Chase is heartened to see the community of small farmers thrive in recent decades. “We have this really vibrant community. The locals and the customers are really supportive of all these different farms and concerns that are trying to make a go of it. They appreciate the products that are being created. You have got to have that kind of support. If we didn’t have it, we wouldn’t be doing it for sure.” Just as important, the farmers say, has been having such a strong community of fellow farmers, from greenhorns to seasoned veterans. When Beal stopped the you-pick operations last year due to the pandemic, she was able to sell her raspberries, strawberries, and eggs at nearby Bahner Farm. “I really like having those different connections to different people,” she says. “It gives people a reason to be good to each other. It’s part of that smalltown accountability. Maybe we don’t have the same political sign in front of our houses, but we can split something like a straw order. We can say, ‘I use straw. You use straw. Let’s be decent to each other.’” The abundance of farm stands, markets, and CSAs to buy farmfresh, locally grown food was especially cherished in 2020, as the pandemic took hold and disrupted national supply chains. “The pandemic reminded a lot of folks how lucky we are in Maine to have small farms all around us,” Beal says. “We’re part of a mutually supportive economy and I hope local food production will continue to provide more of what Mainers eat.” •

BELFAST SUMMER NIGHTS

O

n a warm summer evening last September, a scene unfolded in Belfast Harbor that had a distinct, only-in-Waldo County kind of feel. There on the Armistice Footbridge, beloved local singer songwriters The Gawler Family Band crooned their rollicking folk tunes and hypnotic harmonies to fans who bobbed along from their sailboats, kayaks, and canoes, and from the banks of the Passagassawakeag River. “To see families and boats swaying together in the waves was a profound joy,” says Annadeene Fowler, who with Ando Anderson helped organize the event, part of the Belfast Summer Nights outdoor concert series. The parks, but were moved to the bridge to allow for social distance. “It was so uplifting and evoked the supportive and hopeful feelings that people

experienced this pandemic summer. It was everything we were missing.” The concert was one of many ways that the region’s bevy of theater,

posted the videos online and distributed them through its newsletters. The program was so successful that Everyman is planning to expand to other museums. “Working with another organization like this allows

their considerable creative muscles in 2020, when COVID made business as usual practically impossible.

working on our own doesn’t give you the opportunity to do,” Hodgson says.

“People adapted and used a great deal of ingenuity and imagination,” says Paul Hodgson, director and co-founder of Everyman Repertory Theatre, a 10-year-old professional troupe.

Midcoast Theater Company developed a series of audio dramas in the spirit of old-time radio shows, which actors recorded and the theater posted on its website and Facebook page.

Though the theater cancelled live performances, the theater partnered with the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland to produce “The Painting Speaks,” two dozen short audio stories, written and narrated by Everyman pros, that animate paintings in the museum’s collection. The Farnsworth

“It’s a niche we never really explored,” says Jason Bannister, managing artistic director of the community theater group. Bannister plans to resume live performances this year from the acting group’s new home in the old Waldo County Courthouse, with

if conditions allow. The radio shows may continue even after the actors return to the stage. “It will be just another facet of what we do,” he says. Belfast Maskers brought its shows comedies on the lawn of the Basil Burwell Community Theater, for audiences of 40 who sat on marked spaces six feet apart. The shows were so popular that they added a performance, developed a slate of Let There Be Lights! only play, available on its website. “Everybody was just gushing because they desperately needed that,” says artistic director Meg Nickerson. For 2021, they’re planning to do six performances, inside if they can, and outside if circumstances require. Belfast Flying Shoes hit pause on its comers band jamborees, which draw hundreds of stompers and whirlers each month. Instead, the group focused on its outreach programs, providing 248 ukuleles to local schools, offering virtual music lessons to residents of the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center, and partnering with Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County to present outdoor concerts at a local retirement community. “We can’t really dance together, but we did want to offer a way for people to stay connected,” says Chrissy Fowler,

The Maine Celtic Celebration, which draws thousands to downtown Belfast a video montage of performances by artists who were scheduled to play. While the event didn’t include popular the video was critical to staying engaged with supporters, says Claudia Luchetti, past president of the festival. The group is hoping to do a live event in 2021. Skipping another year wasn’t an option. “Turning out the lights for a year,” Luchetti says, “might have meant turning out the lights forever.” • 30

n the late 19th century, Searsport was one of the most prosperous ports in the world. The deep sheltered harbor opening to Penobscot Bay made it a global center for maritime trade. Dozens of shipyards dotted its shores. Sea captains launched wooden schooners bound for Europe and the Far East, and returned with pottery, exotic spices, and other treasures to trade, as well as souvenirs to furnish the gracious mansions they built along the waterfront. Though Searsport’s peak had passed by the turn of the 20th century as steel hulls supplanted wooden ships and the railroad transformed trade, the town still holds a trove of relics from its prosperous past. Once dubbed “Antiques Capital of Maine,” the onemile stretch along Route 1 between Belfast and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge is a treasure-hunter’s paradise $5 knickknacks and vintage baseball cards to a 220-year-old chest of drawers hewn from solid tiger maple with all its original brass hardware, for $4,400. Each shop offers a little something different. Pumpkin Patch Antiques has a vast selection of 18th- and 19th- century showpieces. Next door, Dennis Raleigh Antiques and Folk Art specializes in period weather vanes, trade signs, and portrait miniatures. Over at Searsport Antique Mall, which is open year-round, one could spend hours poring through vintage buttons, quilts carried by the more than 70 dealers who show their wares there. At DownEast Auctions, owner Mark Bradstreet specializes in coins, currency, and collectibles auctions while his wife, Linda, sells vintage clothing. Last summer, his catalog included a 1652 Massachusetts threeminted in the English colonies. Gaul’s Antiques and Maine Street Vintage offer rugs and furniture, as well as an extensive selection of pattern glass, silver, and linens. Nearly all the items in the shop come from local homes.

032-035_Antiques_Belfast2021.indd 33

Behind the counter at all of these are passionate about history and collecting. That includes Phyllis Sommer, who has been operating Pumpkin Patch Antiques since 1975. She loves to examine furniture to determine which tools were used, which woods were chosen, and the style of joinery that holds a piece together.

OLD SCHOOL MAINE

“It’s living history,” Sommer says. “These objects are teaching us about what values people had centuries ago, what they cherished and what they worked hard to preserve, and what skill sets they had. The fact that some of these things were passed down for more than 200 years means that it’s a big deal.”

BEYOND SEARSPORT The antiques roadshow doesn’t end in Searsport. At The Red Barn Marketplace in Lincolnville, in a restored horse barn dating back to décor and collectibles from nearly 30 vendors, alongside Maine-made gifts, plus a bakery serving up delicious treats. Kendrick’s Antiques in Belfast offers a wide variety of stoneware, pottery, glassware, and furniture. At

vintage collectibles, including old comic books, vinyl records, and sports cards, plus penny candy. Owners Josh Solebello and Regina Quattrucci donate all proceeds to local schools and programs and organizations that enhance opportunities for kids. “We wanted to

the community,” Solebello says. •

ike a lot of people, Garry and Barbara Schwall moved to Waldo County because they loved the pristine coastline, the vast expanses of open space, and the fact that they could live in a community that bustles all year long, an easy drive from vacation getaways like Mount Desert Island. But there were two other important considerations that factored into their choice: Callie and Lexie, their Shih Tzus. “We’re pet people,” Barbara says. “We love that there are so many places here that will embrace their pets when they’re out and about.”

SARA SCHUTE

The Schwalls are part of a growing Waldo County to be a pet-friendly destination. With large tracts of preserved land, two off-leash dog parks, an animal-adoption center, two community pet food pantries, and two annual festivals devoted to furry friends, plus boarding and pet sitting, as well as more than a dozen pet-friendly places to stay, the region is a beautiful retreat for those who have four-legged family members.

PAWS ON PARADE

“This is just such a central spot with so many trails and so much land,” says April Lawrence, owner of Four Leaf Farm, a boutique dogboarding business in Belfast, which also offers off-leash hikes and playgroups for area dogs.

PAWS

Each May, Camden’s PAWS Animal Adoption Center holds its major fundraiser, PAWS on Parade Walk-a-Thon in Belfast City Park. Each September, hundreds of dachshunds descend on the Belfast waterfront for Maine Wienerfest, a celebration of the short-statured breed that includes a grand parade, a canine costume contest, and a Doxie Derby.

APRIL LAWRENCE, FOUR LEAF FARM

In 2008, an off-leash dog park was created by Friends of Belfast Parks, with the help of private donations and funding from the city. In 2012, PAWS opened another off-leash dog park down the road in Rockport.

When Heidi Neal wanted to expand location in Rockland in 2011, recently expanded, doubling the size of her space. “It’s just a great dog-loving community here,” Neal says. Sandy Patrick operates Country Roads Pet and Farm Care in Palermo, which offers pet sitting, dog walking, and pet transport, as well as farm animal care, which allows pets to maintain their regular routines while their owners are away, and get lots of individualized attention.

that they have lots of lodging options when they have Fido in tow. That includes Pine Grove Cottages in Lincolnville, which the Schwalls opened in 2014. “We remember the dogs that come to stay with us just as fondly as we remember their owners,” Schwall says. “It’s nice to be in a place where they’re so welcome.” •

For travelers searching for a safe getaway, the yurts “turned out to be the perfect retreat, where families could relax, be in green space, and enjoy the harbor,” Jillian says.

raveling has become a tricky proposition thanks to the pandemic. But the region is brimming with out-of-the-box lodging options — from yurts to historic inns to private cottages, campgrounds, and farmside retreats — that let you get far from the madding crowds and soak in Waldo County’s majestic coast and bucolic charm.

CAMP OUT

LEFT: CAPTAIN NICKELS INN; RIGHT: STOCKTON HARBOR YURTS

Itching to get back to nature, but don’t want to give up creature comforts like a real mattress? At Stockton Harbor Yurts, you can spend the night in a yurt and spend the days lolling on the private beach, paddling around Stockton Harbor, or exploring the woodland trails and gardens of the 36-acre site. Each yurt, a round tent with wood framing, is insulated and heated, and comes fully equipped with a bath, shower, and kitchen. Owners Jillian and Sandy Liversidge opened the yurts in 2020.

Waldo County has plenty of other options for sleeping under the stars, whether you want to pitch your own tent or you’re traveling with an RV, including Searsport Shores Ocean Campground and Moorings Oceanfront RV Resort, which offer access to private beaches and kayak launches, along with amenities like laundry and free Wi-Fi.

LIVE A LITTLE HISTORY The region has a throng of storied seaside inns where you can spread out in style and experience the area’s wealth of antique architecture. In downtown historic B&Bs, like the Alden House Inn, an 1840 mansion built in the Greek Revival style, and the ornate Victorian Jeweled Turret Inn, built around 1898.

Over in Lincolnville Beach, the Colonialstyle Spouter Inn Bed and Breakfast, built in 1832, is just steps from shops, restaurants, the beach, and the ferry to Islesboro. Each of the eight rooms has ocean views. Over in Searsport’s downtown historic district, you can stay at the Captain Nickels Inn, an 1874 landmark built in the Italianate style, which offers panoramic vistas of Penobscot Bay. The dynamic motherdaughter ownership team of Dawn and Cassidy Gintz bought the property in 2019 and have lovingly restored it. With gracious sitting rooms, a library, a solarium, and three large decks, “our guests never run out of places to social distance and relax,” Dawn says.

RENT A COTTAGE If you’re looking for a home-away-fromhome experience, Waldo County has plenty of individual cottages for rent, so you can handle all your own cooking inhouse. That includes Pine Grove Cottages in Lincolnville. Each of the nine cottages

offers a deck, kitchenette, and barbeque. In 2020, guests found that the decks offered an opportunity to safely socialize with other travelers while keeping their distance. If you want to see what it’s like to live like a local, head over to the historic seaside village of Bayside, which was settled as a Methodist summer camp in the 1850s and has since blossomed into a year-round community. You can rent one of the privately owned homes managed by Bayside Cottage Rentals, which offers everything from charming bungalows perfect for a couple’s getaway to expansive guest houses that can accommodate families of 10. of the ocean, local library, weekly regattas, sailing lessons, nine-hole golf course, and intimate coves where you can comb the sand for sea glass. “We call it a land lost in time where you can go back to the simpler pleasures,” says Bayside Cottage Rentals owner Jennika Lundy. “People really appreciate those times when they can unplug.”

GET DOWN ON THE FARM Small farms abound in rural Waldo County, and if you’re curious about what everyday life is like, you can spend a getaway at a cottage on Toddy Pond Farm in Monroe, which is nestled

on 500 private acres overlooking the pastures and the namesake pond. The cottage is within sight of the farm, but offers total privacy and many options for outdoor fun. You can swim, kayak, and relax on the private waterfront, explore the woodland trails, enjoy farm-fresh veggies, cheese, and milk that are produced on-site at its farm store. You can meet the resident sheep, cows, pigs, and chickens, and May through November you can get a tour of the farm from owners Heide and Greg Purinton-Brown. •

WATERFALL ARTS

WATERFALL ARTS AT 20 Al Crichton moved to Montville from New York in 1971, fired up to homestead and build a life around printmaking and sculpture in a beautiful setting with a long tradition of craftsmanship. “You had this sense that Waldo County is a place where you can make things happen,” he says. “It just felt so accessible. Even beyond the land prices, locals were always welcoming and happy to see young people arrive.” Crichton is among a wave of artists who have come to the region over the last 50 years and worked to make it a place where makers can thrive. In 2000, he and his wife, Lorna, founded the organization that is now Waterfall Arts near the original site of Haystack, which moved to Deer Isle in 1961. In 2006, Waterfall Arts moved to the former Governor Hugh Anderson Elementary School in downtown Belfast, and it has continued to blossom as a creative hub for the region. The nonprofit organization now reaches nearly 8,000 people each year, offers more than 50 classes and workshops, and holds 40 events and seven exhibitions. Members of the community can rent time in its wet darkroom, or its clay and printmaking studios. On Fridays from late April to September,

046-049_Makers_Belfast2021.indd 48

Waterfall Arts hosts the Belfast Farmers’ Market on its front lawn and brings in a rotating cast of local artists to show their work. The organization continues to evolve. It has launched Waterfall Rising, a fundraising campaign to renovate its 85-year-old building. World-renowned glassblower David Jacobson, who has operated a studio in Montville since 2003, recently donated equipment to Waterfall Arts, allowing the organization to launch a glassblowing program of its own. Jacobson will teach classes there. This will be the only community glassblowing studio in the state. As an extension of Waterfall’s commitment to sustainability, all equipment will be powered by electricity along with vegetable oil that has been donated from area restaurants. Kim Fleming, Waterfall Arts’ executive director, sees this initiative as a natural expression of Waldo County’s creative spirit. “There’s just something about Belfast where you can feel relaxed and accepted, be creative in whatever you want to do, and the community embraces it,” Fleming says. “And there’s something really refreshing about that.”

thrown tableware and sculpture made by Gail Savitz and watch her work. At Windsor Chairmakers in Lincolnville, you can come right into the workshop to see Shakerstyle furniture come to life. “We love people coming in and experiencing what we do,” owner Mike Timchak says. “Watching the light in customers’ faces when they watch something that they’ll use every day being made by hand is a huge plus for us. And knowing they’re going to treasure what you made, I don’t think there’s any bigger positive for anybody that creates.” Many of these artists came to the area on the heels of the back-tothe-land movement, drawn by Waldo County’s bucolic setting, affordable land, and the long tradition of art established by institutions like the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, which started in Montville in 1950, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, which started in 1946. “Creative people are drawn to beautiful places for inspiration,” says White, who moved to Palermo in 1971 from Connecticut, and helped launch the Belfast Art Walk back in 2004. “And Maine just has endless beauty.” Robert Esposito, who opened Unity Pond Pottery with his wife, Wendy, in 1986, loves that the area continues to be a destination for passionate area, attracted by the same dynamics that were at work back in the 1970s, as well as the thriving community of makers and institutions that support the arts here. “I’m so encouraged that there are younger artists and craftsmen moving into the area,” he says. “They’re still coming here seeking a simpler way of life, where you have in the 1970s, and two generations later, it’s still happening.” •
