Greetings from the President

Welcome to Belen Jesuit Preparatory School and the Our Lady of Belen Chapel!

Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1854 by a royal charter issued by Queen Isabella of Spain, Belen Jesuit has been committed to the formation of men for 170 years. Deeply rooted in its Catholic-Jesuit identity, the school has been the center of spiritual and academic excellence.

The history of Belen Jesuit has been one of extraordinary perseverance. After being confiscated by the Castro regime in 1961 and its Jesuits expelled, a small band of priests and brothers made their way to Miami to minister to the Cuban exile community. In less than four months, they reopened their doors on the fourth floor of the Gesù school building in downtown Miami. A year later, Belen moved to a warehouse in Little Havana. Through the generosity of alumni, parents, and a community dedicated to Catholic education, Belen Jesuit moved to its present state-of-the-art campus in 1981. The school has continued to flourish and set an example of what it means to live by the Ignatian axiom to, “pray as if everything depended on God and work as if everything depended on you.”

The Our Lady of Belen Chapel is one of the more recent additions to the Belen Jesuit campus. Situated at the very entrance of the school, it is a statement to the conviction that Belen Jesuit is a Catholic school whose intention is to live and promote the gospel of Jesus Christ. Designed by alumnus and architect Jorge Hernández ’74, in collaboration with various alumni, the chapel is a “love letter” to Our Lady of Belen, patroness of the school, in appreciation for her continuous protection. The chapel has become the center of worship for students, faculty, and staff. In addition, it serves Belen’s alumni as a place for their weddings and baptisms.

Belen Jesuit is honored to welcome you on this special occasion when its alumnus, Michael Martínez ’09, will be ordained to the priesthood. Deacon Martínez is a testament to the Catholic formation the school strives so ardently to provide for its students. May all of you experience the grace of such a joyous occasion.

Todo o sumo sacerdote é escolhido de entre os homens e nomeado para servir a Deus em favor deles. A sua missão é apresentar-lhe ofertas e sacrifícios pelo pecados. Como ele próprio tem muitas fraquezas, está em condições de ter paciência com os ignorantes e os transviados. Por isso ele deve oferecer sacrifícios, não só pelos pecados do povo mas também pelos seus próprios. Ninguém toma por si mesmo este honroso cargo de sumo sacerdote. O chamamento para isso tem de vir de Deus, precisamente como aconteceu com Aarão.

Também não foi Cristo que tomou por si mesmo a honra de ser sumo sacerdote. Foi Deus que o chamou para isso, ao dizer-lhe:

The Archbishop inquires with the Provincial Superior of the Jesuit Order to ascertain the Candidate’s aptitude for the Order of the Presbyterate or priesthood. After he elects the Candidate, the Assembly offers its assent with applause that befits the occasion. At this time the candidate’s vocation, which is a gift from God, is now confirmed by the Church.

Promise of the Elect / Promesa del elegido

The Elect stands before the Archbishop who questions him about his willingness to undertake priestly ministry.  The Elected man makes the following promises:

+ To care for the Lord’s flock as a priest and fellow worker with the bishop

+ To preach the Gospel and teach the Catholic faith

+ To sanctify the people of God with the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation (Confession) + To pray without ceasing

+ To consecrate himself to Christ the High Priest, who offers himself for us to the Father for the salvation of all

Arzobispo: Querido hijo: Antes de entrar en el Orden de los presbíteros es necesario que manifiestes ante el pueblo tu decisión de recibir este ministerio.

Promise of Obedience / Promesa de obediencia

The Elect kneels before the Archbishop and places his joined hands between those of the Archbishop as a sign of obedience to the bishop, a successor of the twelve Apostles of Christ. The posture of kneeling resembles the event when Christ assumed this stance while in prayer on the Mount of Olives (Lk 22:41).

The people of God enlist the whole heavenly court to join them in praying prior to the consecration. According to ancient tradition, the litany invokes the Blessed Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the saints, the angels, and all citizens of heaven. As a sign of profound supplication and in a gesture of humility before Almighty God, the  Elect prostrates himself on the floor following Christ’s exhortation and example: “greater love has no man than this, than to lay down his life for his friends” (Jn 15:13).

The Laying on of Hands / La imposición de manos

Here the Archbishop imposes hands on the Candidate and thereby consecrates and commissions him through the gift of the Holy Spirit. As a sign of unity that exists between the priesthood and the role of bishop, each priest present then imposes hands on the

Already in the earlier covenant there arose offices instituted by mystical rites: so that when you had sent Moses and Aaron over your people to govern and sanctify them, you chose men next in order and dignity to join them and assist them in their work.

This is the desert, you instilled the spirit of Moses in the minds of seventy wise men; with them as helpers he more easily governed your people.

So too, over the sons of Aaron you poured an abundant share of their father’s fullness, that the number of priests prescribed by the Law might be sufficient for the sacrifices of the tabernacle, which were a shadow of the good things to come.

Through the Holy Spirit, he offered himself unblemished to you and made his Apostles, who were consecrated in the truth, sharers in his mission; to them you added companions to proclaim and carry out the work of salvation through all the world.

Now, we pray, O Lord, provide also for our weakness this helper whom we need for the exercise of the Apostolic Priesthood.

Grant, we pray, almighty Father, to this your servant the dignity of the Priesthood; renew deep within him the Spirit of holiness; may he hold the office second in order, received from you, O God, and by the example of his manner of life may he inspire right conduct.

May he be a trustworthy co-worker with our Order, so that by his preaching and through the grace of the Holy Spirit, the words of the Gospel may bear fruit in human hearts and reach even to the ends of the earth.

The newly ordained priest, with the help of another, removes the stole of the diaconate, which rests diagonally across his chest, and assumes the stole and chasuble proper to a priest. The stole, traditionally a symbol of authority, hangs over his neck and is worn beneath the larger vestment or chasuble, a symbol of charity.  & 4 4

The Anointing of Hands / La Unción de Manos

The Archbishop consecrates the palms of the new priest with the oils of sacred chrism. From the open hands of  the priest the people are able to receive the blessing of God as well as the sacraments of the Church. This  ancient rite dates to the time when Moses anointed Aaron and his sons (Ex 30:30).

Arzobispo: Jesucristo, el Señor, a quien el Padre ungió con la fuerza del Espíritu Santo, te auxilie para santificar al pueblo cristiano y para ofrecer a Dios el sacrificio.

The Handing On of the Bread and Wine / La entrega del pan y del vino

The bread and the wine, symbols of the priest’s duty to offer the Eucharist, are then presented to the Archbishop by members of the assembly. These gifts, contained within the chalice and paten, are then presented to the newly ordained priest with the following words: “Receive the oblation of the holy people, to be offered to God.  Understand what you do, imitate what you celebrate, and conform your life to the mystery of the Lord’s Cross.”

About the Our Lady of Belen Chapel

The Our Lady of Belen Chapel was dedicated in a special Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami, on May 1, 2022. The over 14-thousand square foot chapel, located on the southeast corner of the school, seats 638. The chapel is designed by Belen alumnus from the class of 1974, architect Jorge Hernández, a Belen alumnus from the class of 1974. Greeting everyone outside the chapel is the Alma Mater statue created by Spanish sculptor José Navarro Arteaga and generously donated by Elizabeth Robayna, the mother of two Belen alumni. Inside the nave are ten side niches (five on each side) featuring paintings representing Jesuit saints from the Americas (five from North America and five from Latin America) by Spanish artist Raúl Berzosa. In addition to the portraits, the chapel also includes specially commissioned artwork in the form of the ambo, altar, and baptismal font. The image of Our Lady of Belen presides just inside the sacred space over the baptismal font. Finally, there is an image of Saint Ignatius of Loyola as one approaches the altar on the right and an image of Saint Francis Xavier as one approaches the altar on the left, representing two of the founders of the Society of Jesus.
